Sports Pro Wrestling Discussion Thread

Anyone thinking of going to Smackdown/Raw in London? Tickets start from £25-30 and it's on during my school holiday. I don't talk about wrestling openly so I don't know if anyone else would want to go amongst my friends. I'm really tempted to go but it would be a bit stupid to go by myself...

wm 26 will be good in the end i think.

i basically wanted to talk about 2 things, 1.) my thoughts on wm 26 and 2.) a fun little thing i did, "using the current roster, make the wm 26 card you want to see"

Thoughts on WM 26:

Mysterio/Punk:

Punk will hopefully win, leading to a hair vs mask or special stip match at extreme rules. unfortunately, this match wont get the time it needs to be amazing, but it should still be really good. won't steal the show though.

Taker/HBK:

I'll be sad no matter who wins, because I like the streak but HBK retiring for good will suck. And if he comes back, I will just lose a lot of respect for him. Taker wins though.

Cena/Batista:

They work well together, I think it is almost obvious Cena wins at this point, but I'm sure Batista and McMahon will work together after WM to screw Cena again.

Jericho/Edge:

WWE has been pushing "SPEAR SPEAR SPEAR" too much. Jericho wins by countering a Spear into a Codebreaker.

Hart/McMahon:

Please, Hart wins with Sharpshooter. Vince will want fans to be happy.

MitB:

Christian or McIntyre wins, I wouldn't be surprised to see Vince come down after the match and have Christian defend the MitB case against McIntyre (who would sit out the entire match). Anything to shove Drew down our throats and for him to finally get a reaction.

Legacy/Orton:

I honestly don't care who wins. I do like Orton the best though, he is a great anti-hero.

Sheamus/HHH:

Ugh - Sheamus will win to elevate his career, WWE will have a serious lack of main eventers after WrestleMania

My Dream Card (No Order)

Tag Team Championship
Bret Hart and The Hart Dynasty vs Mr. McMahon/Big Show/The Miz

With Bret Hart signed, you need to use him. But don't let him control the whole match, let it be a 6 man tag where vince hires show and miz to back him up after thd teams up with their friend and mentor, bret. let bret win by sharpshooter to vince, but lets give thd some chance here

this match pushes THD and hopefully reinvigorates the tag division. make this match for the tag titles so that a real tag team can hold them.

WWE Championship
John Cena vs The Undertaker - No DQ

Honestly at this point, it is almost a given that HBK will lose and likely retire. Whether he retires for good is a different story but who knows - the point is, he doesn't deserve to go out like that, losing to the same man twice in a row. yes they will put on a classic, but so can cena and taker. If any man can end the streak at this point, it will be john cena. Whether he does it or not is for the writers to decide, i had hoped they keep it intact but it would truly be the defining moment of john cena's career. every mega star has one (austin passing out at wm 13, hogan bodyslamming andre) and cena has yet to truly get his moment.

might as well make this one for the title. ill give cena the win, he needs something to cement his career. plus, wwe could finally give him a heel run with this.

HBK vs HHH

I am a firm believer that HBK should retire at WM 26, considering its being held in the state he was born, and I think it should be against HHH not the Undertaker. HHH and HBK can put on a decent match or a pretty good match, but I think they would put it all out for hbk's retirement. hbk winning would be the proper send off.

World Heavyweight Championship
Edge vs Christian

If you need a title match, I would have made it this one. Edge is a proven main eventer, he did it 2 years in a row, and whether christian is his brother or just really good friend doesn't matter, winning over edge at wrestlemania can finally put him over as that main event star that wwe needs. if wwe wants edge to have a clean title win, then i think he can do it later on down the line. It is christian's time to shine.

Chris Jericho vs John Morrison

I think it is time to elevate morrison as a main eventer. even though i have y2j going over, i think that a classic between these 2 at wrestlemania would truly put morrison over. whether or not he can perform a classic is something that i cant decide, but if he needs help, jericho can do it.

i will say that annoying afraid to do anything y2j is not what i want to see, especially him as champion for wm. if anything, he should go back to his y2j heel of 2003 and around that time. when he would do whatever to win but could fight and win matches too.

US / IC Championship
Shelton Benjamin vs Jack Swagger

think of this as angle/benoit 17. i want there to be a lot of actual wrestling until swagger gets frustrated at the thought that there might be someone better than him that he decks benjamin and we then get a normal match.

if you could get a midcard title on one of them, do it. this match would be a good breath of fresh air.

Randy Orton vs Batista - Special Guest Ref, Stone Cold Steve Austin

I think this is how you truly pass the torch. orton is the anti-face, batista is the heel that he is now. they fued about who truly got the torch from the attitude era since they both came from evolution and they decide to have a match at wrestlemania. austin, the MAN, from the attitude era is the special ref.

have orton win clean and austin stunner batista after the match. then, austin and orton drink a beer together. however, austin midway through tries to stunner orton as well. Orton reverses, RKOs Austin, and walks down the ramp as the fans cheer for the rko. austin gets up, looks at orton, and nods his head, acknowledging that indeed the torch has been passed.

CM Punk vs Rey Mysterio - Stretcher Match

These two have good chemistry and a good fued. i would have started it a little earlier but i really like how its developed. punk would need a wm win though to solidfy himself as a main event player in the future.

6 Man MITB and Womans Title Match

kind of mandatory

Going back to the thing about the women's title. I doubt they'll have it this year. Why would kill the beth/michelle fued soo quickly. Plus i doubt mickie's gonna get it again, a divas champ with gail and maryse is more likely

The buildup to WM26 has been great, they have made me care about nearly all the matches. It's a very big card, I know it's 4 hours, but they will struggle to give everything the time it deserves, especially if there are a few elaborate entrances or musical performances. A couple of matches will have to go 10-12 minutes...tipping Jericho/Edge, Orton/Rhodes/DiBiase and/or HHH/Sheamus won't be going too long. Hart/McMahon should be fairly short too. Most excited for Punk/Mysterio and hope it goes for at least 15 minutes so they can put together a great match.

Yeah the card is so stacked that at least 1 match will be a disappointment just due to time constraints. If I had to guess it would be MITB and/or the Triple Threat because neither of these have been particularly built well, and I can't see any other matvh taking a hit in time.

Anyway to the predix...

Punk vs. Mysterio: Would love to see Punk win this one but we all just know that Rey is not going to join the Straight Edge Society after the way they built it. Should be at least a very good match though.

Money in the Bank: This is pretty much a lottery. To be honest I can't see Christian winning it due to him just not being so popular with the higher ranked people in the company. MVP has been just dry recently. Ziggler and Swagger have been directionless for months. Evan Bourne...it would be cool to see him win but he isn't going to. Kane doesn't have a lot of time left in the company but he has just lost his presence, I mean the skit with Pete Rose on Raw said it all really. Matt Hardy proved he couldn't be bumped up the card when they turned him heel as when he finished his angle with his brother, he was directionless. This leaves Kofi Kingston and Drew McIntyre, both excellent in the ring and have developed well this past year. I think my pick is going to McIntyre because of the way he has been built before the show, but I wouldn't be suprised if Kingston won.

Tag Team match: Shiz will win to help build The Miz as a credible wrestler, and gain more prestige on the belts which, to be honest, have done quite well since JeriShow revitalised them.

Orton/DiBiase/Rhodes: I think DiBiase will get a cheap victory, as Orton RKO's Rhodes, then DiBiase hits Dream Street on Orton for the win.

Bret vs. Vince: Only predictable match on the card. If Bret doesn't win it will be an utter shock, especially since Vince is prone to losing at Mania.

Triple H vs. Sheamus: Sheamus HAS to go over on this match. He is actually starting to get some good crowd reactions now, which could have been done without giving him the belt prematurely. If he wins, I actually can see him getting some mega heat. I don't know why people rip on Sheamus, he is great on the mic, and his in ring skills aren't the best but they sure as hell aren't the worst. Triple H needs to carry him and put him over good, which he can do if he puts his mind to it.

Jericho vs. Edge: This match could go either way. I'm going with Jericho because I can't see both titles going on the same night, although i'd rather see Edge win than Cena.

Batista vs. Cena: Batista has proven that he is a great heel, which to be honest I never saw coming. Cena's promos, on the other hand, have been drab and depressing and for once Batista has been carrying his opponent on the mic! These two have proved they can have a good match before, and can see it again if they let it go long enough. Cena to win though, he'll pull a superman.

Whew, pretty long post O_o

great night

i feel sorry for the people who didn't enjoy it, the only real issue was time constraints but i thought all the matches were good and its just the people thinking every match would be a 5 star classic that got dissapointed

I missed HBK's farewell address but I heard that it was tear jerking. WWE just aint gone be the same.

Triple H and Cena can hold things together.

Wrestlemania XXVI was really awesome as said earlier in this thread only real problem was time and Bret being too old to do what he use to do. I was so glad Shawn Michaels v. Undertaker main evented, it should have been the main event last year too. For sure HBKv.Taker II at Wrestlemania was the best match of the night. The top three matches at Wrestlemania XXVI in my opinion were.

01. Career v. Streak: Shawn Michaels v. Undertaker
02. World Heavyweight Championship: Edge v. Chris Jericho
03. WWE Championship: John Cena v. Batista

If anyone cares this is the list of 5-Star Wrestling Matches in WWE, TNA, and ROH by Dave Meltzer.

Ring of Honor

Joe vs. Punk II - October 16, 2004
ROH World Championship
CM Punk v. Samoa Joe

Joe vs. Kobashi - October 1, 2005
Samoa Joe v. Kenta Kobashi

Interesting to note that Samoa Joe had the last three 5-star matches in North America. Such a shame how Samoa Joe has fallen as a pro wrestler.

I guess everyone's definition of a 5 star match is different, but I would have had some more from WWE since 1997 to be honest, even if you were being strict.

Well I just finished watching WWE Raw, TNA iMPACT!, and ROH. I'm going to do a quick summary on what I thought.

WWE Raw
Was okay at the beginning with Jack Swagger coming out, David Otunga has mic skills and promos but his wrestling ability isn't exactly good. I'm really getting sick of the whole guest host concept as well. Raw in the end I say could have been better seeing as the only thing that was built up was the John Cena vs. Batista feud and David Otunga's character.

TNA iMPACT!
Really a lot of things TNA does is pretty stupid, but WWE has done stupid things in the past too. Kurt Angle vs. Mr. Anderson in that Ladder Match would be the best match of the shows on Monday Night. I think I'm going to stop watching TNA though due to the unprotected chair shot on Rob Terry. I understand wanting to get a star over but that's pretty ridcilous risking somebody's health like that even more so it wasn't even a big blow off gimmick match. I can't go support a company that will risk the lives of their superstars like that for some cheap shock ratings. WWE is doing things to keep their workers healthier with the wellness policy, the banning of chair shots to the head/skull region is a good part on ROH and WWE in my opinion.

ROH
Got to catch ROH for the first time on TV and I must say the matches were enjoyable. ROH may not be what it was in the past due to many of their stars going elsewhere such as CM Punk or Samoa Joe, but there is nothing wrong with having wrestling matches with a good amount of time for everyone on the card. The main event of the night was the best match on the card, which was Chris Hero vs. Jay Briscoe. I may consider to order Ring of Honor Pay Per Views in the future as well as purchase some more DVDs.

what is your list of ***** matches

mine are

lesnar/taker HIAC
bret/owen WM X
Jericho/benoit RR 01
Cactus Jack/Sting WCW

and more which i will post later

what is your list of ***** matches

I wouldn't use the 5-star rating system, but I'd say a quick list of some my favorites.

Pro Wrestling-NOAH Navigate for Evolution - March 1, 2003

5 star matches?

1.) Bryan Danielson vs Paul London - ROH Epic Encounter
2.) Chris Benoit vs Kurt Angle - WWE Royal Rumble 2003
3.) Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat vs Randy Savage - WWF Wrestlemania 3
4.) Bret Hart vs Owen Hart - WWF Wrestlemania 10

6.) Chris Jericho vs Shawn Michaels - WWE Wrestlemania 19
7.) AJ Styles vs Christopher Daniels v. Samoa Joe - TNA Unbreakable 05
8.) TLC 2 - WWE Wrestlemania X-Seven
9.) CM Punk vs Samoa Joe - ROH Joe vs Punk 2
10.) Undertaker vs Shawn Michaels [Hell in a Cell] - Bad Blood 97

i may be to loose with my 5 star rankings but i think all of these are worthy

what a fucked draft

Smackdown losing star power only means it can get better. 2009 was good to Smackdown, this draft gives more room for other superstars. Raw however is a different story with all that star power. With so much star power I can only see guys like John Morrison not moving up due to past moves from Smackdown/ECW to Raw such as MVP.

I agree. No Jericho and no Edge means more Punk. Punk is seriously amazing on the mic, and I really hope he gets another title run soon, because he has been tremendous since he turned heel.

Yeah CM Punk is a tremendous worker.

Look at Smackdown's top stars:
Big Show
Christian
CM Punk
Jack Swagger
Kane (Has reached a place in this business where he can move between ME scene and Mid Card such as the likes of Jericho and Flair)
Kofi Kingston
Undertaker

With Undertaker not being on the show 90% of the year, Smackdown looks real good. Drew McIntrye will be added in the mix soon, he has one problem though. What is the difference between Drew and the Wrestlemania 26 after party? The party's over...

Edge turning heel in a matter of like 3 seconds was both awkward and entirely appropriate.

Like Metal Gods, I'm more worried about Raw superstars like Miz and Morrison being lost in the fold than I am about Smackdown's "gimped" roster.
