Professor Baobab's Field Guide

Pokémon biology!

This is awesome. From the Latin names based on typing, to the skeletons, the tale of the journey...

I see you've sometimes exaggerated the size of some of the Pokémon (which I heftily approve, of course), but their weight hasn't been scaled up accordingly. I'd imagine that a full-grown Torterra's weight would be somewhere around the two-ton range, but hey! Your tale, your rules.

Like all the others, I'm eager for more, and will follow this thread closely. Excellent stuff!

A couple of Pokemon in the works: Gyrados, Sandshrew, Golem and a Donphan "re-work". I would give out more "spoilers" but I don't want to ruin the fun! I will say that there are some "text pages" coming soon. These are more story based with sketches from the professor but not completely Pokemon based. Think, items, terrain, etc.

As for the weights, I wasn't sure if I should change the Pokemon completely or just fix sizes to make them more impressive. I want to stay as true as possible to the idea without making the characters unrecognizeable. Thus, keeping most of the characteristics. I have however, as stated, changed some of the Pokemon to be "more real". Kecleon for example just didn't seem right, standing on two feet like a teddy bear of sorts. He feels much more realistic and even opposing as a wild animal.

In the end, I want the feeling of Humans living with Pokemon. That the Pokemon are not objects of amusement but rather something that should be respected or even feared.

These are really great! The way you mix Pokemon and real creatures is very well done, you have the right amount of Pokemon in there to make them recognizable. I also really like your writing and story; in fact I would like to know more about the beginning of the expedition, and I think the format would even fit writing about a more urban environment!
I also like the way you move between environments in a progression!

I'm not very good with geography, have you based any of this on real places? You seem to have done lots of research on the animals at the very least.

In conclusion, I am really enjoying Walking With Pokemon (now that would be an awesome TV series).

I'm actually basing this region off the continent of Africa. Its specifically named after the Limpopo River which runs through Zimbabwe, Botswana, and South Africa. More so the Northern edge of the river than anything else. Much like current regions and Japan etc. The Professor is actually named after the very iconic Baobab tree.

I believe I stated earlier in the post here about the "idea" or "plot" of the current story. You can also check out some of the earlier pages. Once I release some more of the texts, they will shed some light onto the actual story. Maybe even introduce some of the characters. So, feel free to scroll back a page or two and check that out. I don't want to be too repetitive. I was writing a story/book but decided that it was taking too much time away from actual Field Guide work and thus have put that on hold and have decided to tell the story more though the guide than anything else. I really can't wait to post some of the next pieces.

Seen this stuff on dA before, and I really like the concept of a exploration diary detailing all of the encounters the travellers make. I also like how you stay true to the animals they're based on, and not just trying to pimp up the official art.

Well, quite honestly, drawing realistic Pokemon isn't a unique idea. There are several before me who have done it and continue to do it so I encourage you to take on your own project and run with it.
Silver5 and SoupAndButter on dA springs to my mind on that subject, but as you put it, those are only a few.

Yeah, I think each of us have an individual technique. I love both of those artist and follow them on dA. They have gone the route of actual Pokemon as they are (real cartoon) where I am trying to go (real life). I also think, and this may be a personal thing, that both of those artist blow my work out of the water!! I mean look at the skills on each of those guys! I feel my guide doesn't even compete! The only thing I may have going for me is that its a bit more different than what most people have seen. Either way, I have nothing but respect for Silver and SaB.

Hey guys! Back again with a couple more pages! Enjoy. Gyrados is in the works and should be posted soon. I', also thinking about posting a few more collections of my concept work. Especially on pieces I've already done so you can see the work vs. The finished piece.

OMG i've never seen something like this! It's pretty cool! Could you make one featuring Gardevoir or Drifloon/blim?

good lord
this is fantastic!!!
love the originality, and it's really well executed too!!
please do makuhita at some point <3

I added Gyarados and am redrawing Donphan as I am updating this! (I took break to post) I've been playing with live feeds of my drawing pages so if any of you are interested in watching, let me know. I just got Corel Painter 12 too so thats been fun. I hope to hear from you soon.

Yes livestreams would be amazing!
I love seeing each time you update, and the gyarados is no different; I absolutely love the angler fish-like mouth you put on it!
:)

You should really consider drawing for the Smog! Your art is different, fresh, and most of all, fuckin awesome! :D

I'd be more than honored to draw for the Smog. If the opportunity should arise, I would do graciously accept. ;) I'm also starting a share screen session via Join.me! Just go to https://join.me/ and enter the join code: 674-184-916 I'm getting ready to start drawing so I may be ask getting a drink or something like that BUT, you can see the new Donphan and how I work some of my process with pages. :D Enjoy!

Update: I apologize for earlier to whomever stopped by. I am trying to get my tablet situated. Apparently playing with my new Corel 12 has upset my CS3. So... I am fixing that.

Casteel's Poke Fan Art & Other Fun Stuff!

Well, I know I have my Field Guide thread up and running but I wanted a place to post some of my other drawings and sketches I've done that haven't made it to the guide or were never meant to be. Kind of a collection of other drawings and cool art. So without further ado, here is the first entry! I'll update and post whenever my brain and hands decide to cooperate and spit out some more garbage. Enjoy!

Your messy pen sketches are just as great as the field guide :)
imo the pen gives it a really nice, sketchy, kind of ragged appearance - befitting of Darkrai - that I think makes this work really well if it was a finished piece, with the unfinished sections almost like it is emerging or something. Love your art :)

hooooooooly shit

best art i have seen in a while, legitimately spent 20 minutes reading through this

draw for the smog please <3

I have registered with the group to draw for Smogon but have yet to receive a response. I would be so excited to have my art displayed on some of the articles. I am working on some other pieces right now that are going to be a lot of fun. I know my style is a bit "messy" but I just start sketching and the lines start to flow I can't stop it. LOL Im happy that you like the drawings though.

My new Donphan I think is going to rock! I love the new detail and body shape.

Brilliant drawings, humorous and life-like. Do you take requests?

EDIT: You described Hippowdon as having tusks, when none were pictured. You might want to change that...

Thank you. As for requests, I do take them in consideration. In regards to the "tusks" I don't think that mentioning tusks necassarily requires the sketch to portray them. The hippo have large tusks that that don't really show all of the time. The entry tries to convey a sense of danger or great presence. :)

Anyway, what exactly did you want to request?

Well, I don't want to give you a specific request, as I believe your story-based art will invariably turn out much better if you think of the pokemon to encounter. However, throwing in a cool encounter with a legendary poke would be absolutely awesome. It doesn't matter which one, just a legendary poke.

Just a suggestion tho.

Edit: perhaps you could incorperate your Darkrai.
