Smogon Simple Questions Thread

How Long does a Thread draft stays? I was going to write a thread in the rmt sub forum that I have been writing off since 2 days ago and now I don't see and I lost all of my progress. is there a way to save it? I had saved the draft before it was erased
I don't have an answer on how long a draft says, I believe it's a day or two of cache, but don't quote me on that. However: consider using the Sandbox, a forum where only you can see threads you've made.

You have about like 48 hours guaranteed from experience, after that is really by chance how long it stays open for. Never more than 3 days though, I've found. If you are working on a big post, the sandbox is your friend.

Is there any way to get HP Fire in Gen IV with 31 Speed IVs, for example by making its power less than 70?
No. HP type is determined based which IVs are even/odd; HP Fire specifically requires Even (ie. 30 max) Atk, SpA, and Spe.

It's inconsistent, I've had some very long drafts saved in drafts and sometimes it lasts a week and sometimes disappears after a couple days. If it's long I'd suggest that you save the draft somewhere else; consider using the sandbox.

Hi, what's the procedure to report bots on PS? I submitted reports from some battles but wanted to check if that's the appropriate procedure to follow.

Also, are any actions being actively taken to prevent this bot slop?

Bots are allowed on PS unless they’re mass forfeiting or doing some other anti-player behavior.

Hi, I'm going to be a tutee in the VGC Battling 101 program, but they mention contacting your tutor via. their VM wall. What does it mean and what's the steps to contacting?

Judging from your signup, I don't think you got assigned a tutor just yet. You are going have to wait unfortunately

Hi 2BStellar!
Well, as OceanicGamer says, you may not be able to get paired rn immediately. You can have a look at the battle 101 sign-up faqs:
  • You will be paired when there is an available tutor within a reasonable timezone. It's as simple as that.
  • Note: If you have been extremely inactive on the forums and you are next on the list to be paired, you will not be paired until you show adequate activity on the forums.
Thus, instead of waiting still, be active and stick with us on the forums, then you might be more likely to get paired.:psyglad: I believe they'll let you know what to do next after you're paired.

Hi all,

I have been on the Smogon Discord for some time now and have enjoyed my stay so far. I was wondering if anyone in the community may have already done work regarding the analysis of the stabilities of various metagames and determinations of their "solved" states. The question I am aiming to answer is whether the eventual state of a metagame is determined purely by its game data, or whether other factors, such as the starting context, changing social environments, etc. also come into consideration. I am also aiming to quantify what impact theoretical changes to any of these factors would have on the "solved" states of a metagame. Thanks in advance.

I assume you're asking about how a metagame gets determined and that mainly just revolves around players of the tier all wanting to win and therefore using the best strategies— it takes a lot of time and experimentation. Metagames are rarely "solved" though and even old generations have a changing metagame like Conkeldurr being seen more frequently in Gen 5 OU and Medicham going from UUBL to OU in Gen 3 recently.

If I misconstrued your question wrong lmk.

Yeah, it is kind of like that. Sure, there can be innovation in the space of metagames, but finding the best strategies can also come from observing/analyzing game data, I believe (there is lots of data in the games, which is why probably even the old gens can still change their meta states). Mainly, I am wondering if anyone has made any attempts to quantify the impact that game data has on the eventual state of a metagame. Do we just not have enough data to assess what the eventual state of a metagame should be, or perhaps we don't have enough data analysis tools to do so?

The metagame is based on what people use while trying to win. If you mean game data as in looking at which Pokemon are successful in tournaments and on ladder then yes there are resources like usage stats. People optimise the metagames they play as much as possible and use the best Pokemon and bring counters to conventional strategies, changes in the metagame are realisations and people adapting to it and figuring out new strategies.

Idk what you mean by data analysis tools, you can use data from top level games to figure out what the current metagame of a tier is and which strategies work.

This is worded like a pretty convoluted question but I'll simply answer it as most metagames are optimised as much as possible.

Sorry for being so cryptic here. Basically, I am trying to understand metagame dynamics in order to predict how changes or the reintroduction of fundamentals could change or shake up things. It isn't a question of how long it takes to create the most competitively viable strategy, rather how data from the main games (Pokémon base stats, items, battle mechanics, etc.), as well as other factors (culture, community size, sprites) etc., impact what the "solution" to the metagame is. Has anyone in the community studied this? Is it possible to answer, for example, how Primal Groudon being 20 stat points faster in speed would impact Ubers? Or, how about if Clefable had a Missingno/some other trashy sprite assigned to it permanently in Gen 6 OU? Or even what if a bunch of Gen 1 RBY players suddenly died off and the community shrank substantially? Do any of these factors affect the answer to the question "what should I do to increase my odds of winning more battles than I lose over the long run?", which is what I refer to when I talk about metagame "solutions". I hope this is clear now.

Even the slightest changes in stats (usually being speed) can change a Pokemon's viability entirely. For example, 100 is a common benchmark and if say Mega Charizard were to have 101 base speed it would be noticeably better. The competitive playerbase doesn't really care how Pokemon look so that wouldn't really change anything, if the Gen 1 community shrank there would be less competition and metagame development if they were to be good players (ignoring that RBY OU is kind of solved).

Pokemon in metagames are used based off their stats, abilities, movepools and typing along with how they interact with the wider metagame. In order to not flood this section I hope that answered your question.

So, it has come to my attention that there is no way to recover a lost Pokemon Showdown password at this time. That's... unfortunate. I was trying to update my password the other day for security reasons, and something must have happened on my phone while I was working on it because now nothing is working. I don't know if I accidentally misclicked something or what, but the updated password that is saved in my phone doesn't work, the old one doesn't work, the new password I thought I changed it to doesn't work... I've forgotten passwords for things before but this is the first time a password has simply disappeared from existence. I've even tried every possible combination of characters (Examples: 0 and O, a and @) I can think of that I would normally use and that didn't work either. If anything, what should I do about this?
