Smogon's Top Video Games List - Stage 2 (Current topic - REDEMPTIONS)

Crash Team Racing is better than any Mario Kart game to the point where the later games are quite derivative of it.

There I said it.

Save Castlevania 3! It's much better than either of its predecessors and deserves to be on the list a lot more than Aria/Dawn of Sorrow...

EDIT: Thank funk Crash Bash didn't make it.

EDIT2: Ha ha ha ha, who's the smartass who nominated Daikatana?

imo source > 1.6 so i'm fine with that.

Although the fact that 4 Castlevania games and 4 Crash Bandicoot games are all being considered in a top 100 list blows my mind. I've never owned a Crash Bandicoot game but I find it hard to believe that an entire trilogy is on this list + a racing spin off.

Just wait til we hit the pokemon games. It will be interesting to see how many (or how few) are voted to remain. This I think will be the most difficult group to remain unbiased in.

Also keep in mind that just because these games survived the first elimination doesn't mean they will all end up on the final list. This first wave of eliminations, if the trend continues, is probably only going to reduce the list to 250-300, so another method elimination will be needed to get to the desired 100 games. This step will involve more discussion, and details are still being worked out.

Uh, why is Defense of the Ancients on the list when its just a game mode of Warcraft 3?

(Requesting Backyard Baseball 2001 replace it :D)

It isn't "just a game mode" for Warcraft 3. It wasn't made by Blizzard, and was much more popular than the game itself. It led to the creation of a new genre of multiplayer games, including a sequel. It shouldn't be removed.

Well it was a mod of Warcraft 3. Not sure how to class those properly, but I think it should probably still be counted as Warcraft 3. If a Lord of the Rings mod of Skyrim was created with new content and modified combat system, would it fall under Skyrim or be considered a separate entity? I would be inclined to rule it under the original game still. But then it did get a sequel lol... So game mod spawns new game... imo I would consider DotA2 a separate thing (because it is) and file DotA1 under the umbrella of Warcraft 3 - as a very popular mod.

Also yeah now that I have discovered this thread, I can't wait to see how the voting for the Pokemon games turn out! XD If it were up to me I would consider the first two gens classics, and would probably file RBY together as one and GSC together as one. If I was pushed to really name one that I considered a true classic then it would have to be RBY because it introduced the whole thing, and while GSC improved it so much; from an outside perspective it really was, at its basics, pretty much the same thing as RBY so that would have to get the vote. Even though GSC was my fav!

DotA should be classified as is. Counter-Strike was a mod of Half-Life, and they were considered two separate entities, so there is no reason not to do the same in this case.

But I'd consider Counterstrike as Half-Life too lol. Half Life as an entity encapsulates the ground breaking single player and the engrossing and addictive multiplayer and Counterstrike is part of that story - part of its legacy and its lasting appeal. The fact that Half Life's multiplayer was so good and so flexible and fired up so many ppl's imaginations is what brought Counterstrike to come about. I consider the same for DotA and all other popular mods. But at the heart of it is the original game and the original experience. That's my take on it anyway.

meh, differing opinions, i'm sure i'll find something later to take out so backyard baseball can get in :D

I said this before but please can Ninja Gaiden 2 be replaced with Ninja Gaiden? It really is a no brainer for anyone familiar with these that series - NG was supremely polished, NG 2 was deeply flawed with serious glitches and took away many features that made NG so great.

People contribute and leave and I think it is not unreasonable to allow revisions to the pool as new people arrive or leave, it's just the nature of the thread and forum. This way I think more quality can be discovered and added. I am in favour of adding Backyard Baseball and others that are brought up since they may well be a gem that was missed the first time around and new users who discover the thread will contribute their experiences until a final list is slowly picked and pruned.

I'm not going to remove Ninja Gaiden 2, however I will add Ninja Gaiden, as well as the following games due to interest:

Backyard Baseball 2001
Command & Conquer: Red Alert

Any objections?

i've finished the vote counter.

you can use it to hold more polls in this thread (in the same format as the first poll). it might be a good idea to make a new thread for each new poll, locking the previous ones, and eventually merging them all together for the sake of organization.

http://fpaste.org/On8g/

to use it, modify the values at the top of the file:

# url of the poll
url = 'http://www.smogon.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3468348'

# set this to True to return a list of usernames counted
show_usernames = False

# set this to True to print all the posts in the thread.
print_posts = False

# set this to False if you don't want to count votes for some reason.
count_votes = True

# set this to False to hide warnings of invalid votes.
warn_invalid_votes = True

# list of games in current round
gamelist = """
999: 9 persons 9 hours 9 doors
Ace Attorney Investigations
Ace of Spades
[...]
Bastion
Baten Kaitos Origins
Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean
"""

note that warn_invalid_votes will warn you for every post in the thread that doesn't contain a valid vote, including every post since philip's -- and if you change the gamelist, it will warn you for every current post in this thread. i'll see what i can do about this, since imo it's useful functionality (that's why i put it in!). until then, well, that's why i recommend a new thread for each poll. x)

sample output, default settings

sample output, invalid vote warnings off

yeah, i noticed it counted votes wrong last time. it's okay, i unbroke it!

this script is written with python 2.7, and i'm pretty sure no other version will work. i release it as free software etc.

the problem with that is I don't really want to create a new thread for each group, since they're so close in proximity and there's so many of them. Also, how do I even modify the language when I need to change groups, and how picky is it with the format of votes? Is it going to count the vote as invalid if someone, for example, misspells "ABSTAIN", or types a "-" or ":" after the games on the list before their vote? I will consider implementing this for the next round, but I need to know these things before I start using it. Thanks!

In other news, Group 4 has finished voting, and the following games have been eliminated:

Daikatana
Dance Dance Revolution Extreme 2
Defense of the Ancients
Deus Ex: Human Revolution
Diablo
Diablo 3
Diddy Kong Racing
Digimon World
Digimon World 2
Digimon World Dusk/Dawn
Dino Crisis
DoDonPachi

Also group 5 has now been added to the first post. Voting for Group 5 ends thursday, June 28th at 11:59 PM PST.

Honestly, I think Diablo 3 is too new to warrant consideration for being in the top 100. I'm sure it's an awesome game, but it's tough to conclude that so quickly. It's kind of like putting a professional football player on the top 100 all time list halfway through their rookie season.

I'm kind of sad for the loss of the original Diablo since I enjoyed it so much, but I suppose it makes sense.

I concluded that Diablo 3 was better than anything in its genre previously just from the new concepts in the beta. Like it's predecessors, it should come to define its genre.

the requirement for a vote to be counted is that the user copies the entire list of games into their post and they don't misspell 'yes' or 'no'. bolding and case don't make a difference, and extra characters in the line will be ignored. writing 'abstain' on every line isn't necessary -- if the line doesn't have 'yes' or 'no' then it will be counted as an abstain.

this is an example of a valid vote:

Code:
999: 9 persons 9 hours 9 doors yes
Ace Attorney Investigations [B]yes[/B]
Ace of Spades -- no
Actraiser :::::::::::::: [B][I]no[/I][/B]
Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising [B]aw HELL[/B] NO
Advance Wars: Dual Strike [B]yEs[/B]
Age of Empires [U]no[/U]
Age of Empires 3 abstain
Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings [B]abstrained[/B]
Age of Mythlogy: The Titans
Age of Mythology <--- i've never heard of this game.
Amnesia: The Dark Descent
Angry Birds
Animal Crossing [B][I][U]meaningless text.[/U][/I][/B]
Animal Crossing: City Folk
Animal Crossing: Wild World
Ape Escape
Assassin's Creed
Assassin's Creed 2 [B]test
[/B]Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood
Banjo-Kazooie this game was alright but i'm still voting no
Banjo-Tooie
Bastion
Baten Kaitos Origins
Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean

icecaradler's vote would be invalid because the first line is wrong. coolking49's vote would obviously be nowhere near valid.

lightwolf's post is a special case. on line 9, he changed "Age of Mythlogy" (in your original post and in the gamelist i used) to "Age of Mythology". nobody noticed, but this causes his vote to not be counted after that line.

interestingly, my post above has the beginning of a valid vote in it. in the hide tags, the first three lines of a vote appear and they're counted as abstains. so, it counts those three abstains, outputs "error at line 3", and moves on to the next post. this functionality is a side effect of the way i wrote it, so i might change it, but i don't see it being a problem.

since you mentioned you really want to do them all in one thread, i've added the ability to start counting votes at an arbitrary place in the thread. i've also changed the warning messages to make them less useless. here's the new version:

version 0.4

basically, everything between lines 13 and 61 is intended to be modified as desired.

as for the list of games, just delete the current list (starts at line 35) and plunk it in, making sure the triple quotation marks are intact. i haven't tested it with any other list of games (since there is nowhere for me to attempt to count those votes) but i designed it to be flexible.

edit:
sample output, poll_start = 161
