sonic

Roger Craig Smith is an amazing fit for Sonic, his voice never really gets annoying to me and sounds cheesy enough but never on the level of annoying. The overall majority of the Sonic character's voice acting has increased pretty well from Tails no longer sounding like he can't tell his exact age to Knuckles finally sounding bearable to Eggman improving his vocal range and overall dialogue to even the fact that Sonic Colors' cutscenes were genuinely humorous for the right reasons.

In other slightly-related Sonic news, Sonic 4 Episode II is looking mighty good and a genuine improvement over the original.

GOTTA GO FAST.

I really haven't really played too many Sonic games, but I've grown interested in the series ever since I played Generations. My only two titles before I got generations were:

Sonic Adventure 2 I spent my entire 4th grade summer playing this game. Although the story and characters haven't aged the best, I had a ton of fun with this game back when I was younger. I've heard that people weren't big fans of the treasure hunting / mech sections, but I actually enjoyed them. Drill Clawing from the very top of meteor heard just could you could was pretty cool! The Biolizard can go fuck itself.

Sonic Rush I don't remember much about this game to be honest. Blaze + Sonic was cool I guess.

Now, Sonic Generations was a ton of fun. The sense of speed you got with the stages was fantastic and the numerous alternate paths in the normal stages and the sheer number of missions gave it a ton of replay value. Since buying Generations, I've bought the steam versions of Sonic 1, 2, and 3&K (they were 2.50 a piece during a sale). Out of that group of three, I prefer them in reverse order. The variety in Sonic 3 is crazy awesome and Sonic 2 is just plain fun. I'm not to big a fan of Sonic one, beyond Green Hill and Starlight zone, the rest of the levels feel like a weird Mario clone.

Optimistic about Sonic 4 Ep II, but keeping my hopes low for now.

I still feel a deep shame for not having played through Sonic Colours yet, but Generations is easily the best, better than Unleashed. I’d say that it improves on unleashed in every way since the controls for steering do not suck, and while I love the scenery in Unleashed there were some problems (ie people in your way).

I’m on my way to getting every red ring in Generations but the Wisp Planet is proving to be very annoying to get through.

Here is some more music

In terms of soundtrack Sonic 2 might have the best with Emerald Hill and Metropolis, Hill top is also fun. Sonic 3 Hydrocity Act 1 and the Carnival Zone Act 1 are both really groovy and it’s not hard to see that MJ worked on the music in these games.

Sonic Adventure is good only if you have this radical 90’s mindset, although speed highway is the exception because it feels much more current, probably why it was in Generations, although both classic and modern versions are too similar. Twinkle park 2 the first 10 seconds gives me chills.

Sonic Adventure 2 has music that fits extremely well with each character in their stage and works really well in that regard. Heroes has catchy music but Seaside Hill did have too much downtime in the track which generations fixed.

Secret Rings has good music whenever it isn’t the SEVEN RINGSSS IN HANNDD song which plays too much and was a really bad design choice. Generations of course is perfect in every regard. I would love for a Generations 2 but knowing Sega that would never happen.

my favrit sanic game is the sanic 2: gotta go fast game

u havent gone fast til u played this game

Alright, time for my viewpoints on all the Sonic games I've played enough to give my opinions on it:

Sonic the Hedgehog 1
Played this about 600+ times on my Ipod, it's what got me into Sonic in the first place. Despite the absence of the Spin Dash, it has a pretty awesome sense on momentum and a great mix of levels.

Favorite Level: Starlight Zone

Sonic the Hedgehog 2
What a sequel should be: takes the concepts of the original and improves on them. The Spin-Dash was the best new inclusion, along with a bit longer zones and the casino level. Seriously, I used to spend hours as a kid trying to get the jackpot on the slots. The biggest problem I have with it is the extremely cheap final levels, Wing Fortress is an absolute jerk of a stage.

Favorite Level: Casino Night Zone

Sonic the Hedgehog CD
A bit of a weird one with me. Despite having fantastic music for both versions and the great levels Palmtree Panic and Stardust Speedway Zone, the level design in itself is... awful. It just feels very gimmicky and levels such as Wacky Workbench and Collision Chaos feel even more frustrating than Spring Yard and Metropolis Zone from previous games.

Favorite Level: Stardust Speedway Zone

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Knuckles
Fantastic, fantastic, fantastic game. Absolutely excellent graphics, the best music in the series, and some of the most tight controls ever made. The level designs are extremely inspired, and the scale is absolutely MASSIVE. I still don't think I've found everything this game has to offer yet. The only complaints I have is that Knuckles really doesn't control as well as I want, but thankfully he's optional and acts more like a "Hard Mode" than anything else.

Favorite Level: Ice Cap Zone

Sonic R
EVERYBODY SUPER SUCKING RACING
THE CONTROLS ARE NONEXISTENT
COME ON SUPER SONIC RIPOFF
I DONT LIKE THIS GAME AT ALL

Favorite Level: The music was the only awesome part of this game.

Sonic Adventure
This one has not aged well. Despite a small picking of good levels, the series showed its first step towards its era of downfall, with questionable design choices (Big, I'm looking at you), slippery controls, and "So bad it's hilarious" graphics. The music also ranges from "HOLY CRAP AWESOME" to puke-worthy.

Favorite Level: Windy Valley

Sonic Adventure 2
Didn't really like this one. Despite the improvement with Sonic/Shadow's levels and the big Chao Garden, the rest of the half of the game with Tails/Eggman's Machines on Ice (c) and Knuckles/Rogue's Absolutely Suicidal-Worthy Emerald Hunts make me wanna kill someone. There's a genuinely fantastic game in there with the high-speed thrills, but it's clogged to death with even more poor and forced design choices. Despite all of this, Shadow's characterization in this game is the best he's been in the entire series.

Favorite Level: Green Forest

Sonic Colors (Wii)
Holy hell yes. It finally seemed like Sega realized that people don't want to play as Werehogs or Hedgehogs with swords and brought Sonic to who he is: a high-speed demon who's out to save colorful fantasy worlds. The Wisps were a fantastic inclusion, opening up exploration without having to force us down stupid nooks n' crannies for pipes and such. The entire cast is lovable also, with tons of hilarious dialogue and a more centralized plot. The graphics are absolutely beautiful considering the system it's on, and the music is still awesome.

Favorite Level: Planet Wisp

Sonic Generations (3DS)
Not owning a this-gen HD console sucks, so I decided to get Generations for the newest handheld. Despite lacking the options the console version has nor having the same depth, it's a great on-the-go game with tons of missions and with plenty of motivations for speedrunning.

Favorite Level: Mushroom Hill Zone

Sonic Generations is incredible and I highly suggest anyone who has been turned off by the shittiness of '06 and werehog to give it a go; it is an absolute return to form, and my favourite Sonic since 3+Knuckles.

just confirming that sonic colors is an amazing game, both visually and musically -- coming from someone who doesn't particularly like earlier games

i could play the "arcade minigame" for hours on end and it's been posted but aquarium park act 1 is some of the best vgm there is imo

anyone who doesn't have the Sonic Classic Collection pack for the DS needs to get it now. It contains Sonic, Sonic 2, Sonic 3, and Sonic 3 + Knuckles for $30. The best part is, they're *almost* completely unchanged - only thing they did is give the original a simple (i mean very simple) save feature and some small graphical changes + stuff for the screen. It's amazing, the only qualm i have is that you can abuse the save feature, which lets you save at the beginning of a zone and then load from act one, to get the chaos emeralds easily

Oh my God I'm such a piece of shit for not mentioning Sonic R. Best/scariest soundtrack ever. The game itself was crack, too. Like what the hell is wrong with them, just do another one of those instead of that hoverboard crap.

Or there's 1, 2, 3&K, and even CD independently for $5 a pop.

This actually isn't a bad idea with the new 3D style of gameplay. Some levels in Generations like Rooftop run border on the lines of a racing game, what with all the boosting and drifting. That sounds like loads of fun!

best sonic game ever - sonic adventures 2 for dreamcast

that ending with super sonic was beast plus raising weird ass chaos was fun.

S3&K is the shit. I've only played the console games up to Heroes simply because I lack the console systems to play them.

Debating on getting Generations for the 3DS or not.

The music is good too, even in '06. (which apparently sucked hard)

Alright, so as you can probably tell from my username, I've played quite a bit of Sonic games. I'll list them and what I thought of them.

Sonic the Hedgehog: This was the first of the classic games that I played. I liked it a lot, especially Green Hill and Starlight Zone. As a kid I never really played it as much as 2 or 3&K, but I still think it's a great game regardless.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2: This was one of the Sonic games I played the most when I was a kid. I loved the levels and the addition of the Spin Dash. I remember dying a lot on the second act of Chemical Plant as well due to the part where the water is rising and you have to jump on the shifting platforms. I also really liked using Super Sonic.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles: While I didn't play this as much as Sonic 2 when I was a kid, I have recently been playing this a lot more. The game is much longer and I love a lot of the levels, especially Ice Cap and Sky Sanctuary. I also liked the Insta-Shield and the addition of the Super Emeralds and Hyper Sonic. It was a fun game overall and definitely my favorite of the 2D titles.

Sonic CD: This was the first 2D Sonic game I actually beat, considering I had trouble with the other 3. The game was fun and I liked its music. My favorite level was Stardust Speedway because of its aesthetics and because of the boss for Stardust Speedway, which is one of my favorite in the 2D games.

Sonic Adventure: This was the first Sonic game I ever played and the one that attracted me to the series. I liked the Sonic levels a lot, especially Emerald Coast and Speed Highway. The Tails levels were also fun, especially with all the shortcuts you could take by flying. Gamma's shooting levels were also fun. I didn't really like Knuckles, Amy, or Big's gameplays. Especially Big's with his stupid fishing levels. Overall, the game was great, especially its music.

Sonic Adventure 2: I freaking loved this game. I have probably played this more than any other game I own. The game was so fun and the Chao system made me pick it up again repeatedly. I liked the gameplay a lot, except for maybe the Treasure hunting levels. This game's music was also amazing, and this is no doubt one of my favorite games in the franchise.

Sonic Heroes: While I didn't like this game as much as the Adventure games, it was still enjoyable. The team gimmick was pretty cool I guess. I really don't have much else to say other than that it also has great music like the other games on the list. Seaside Hill and Ocean Palace were also pretty cool stages.

Shadow the Hedgehog: I never really played this, so I don't have much to say about it.

Sonic the Hedgehog (2006): I never played this either, so once again I do not have good to say.

Sonic and the Secret Rings: I did not really like this game due to the fact that you have to always move forward. It also just did not feel as memorable as other Sonic games.

Sonic Unleashed: The daytime levels were great and fun. I really liked them, especially Cool Edge and Rooftop Run. However, I did not like the nighttime levels. The werehog was just slow and didn't feel like Sonic. It was especially bad because I played the Wii version in which there are way more night levels than day levels. The only part of the werehog I liked was the Egg Dragoon boss fight.

Sonic Colors: I loved this game. It had the daytime gameplay of Unleashed without the Werehog. There was less boosting due to rings not filling up the Boost gauge, but it was still fun nonetheless. The Wisps were also a neat addition which showed hidden pathways and secrets. There was also a special reward for clearing all of the Gameland stages that I enjoyed a lot (not going to spoil for those who haven't played the game). In terms of stages, I really enjoyed them, especially Starlight Carnival, Planet Wisp, and Aquarium Park.

Sonic Generations: I have only played the 3DS version so I can't give input on the console version. The 3DS version was great. I loved many of the stage choices like Emerald Coast. The bosses were also cool. As usual, the music was great. The gameplay was awesome as Classic played like the Classic games while Modern played like Rush (although I am pretty sure he plays like Unleashed in the console version). The game was fun overall and a great celebration of Sonic's 20th anniversary

There are plenty of people who aren't big fans of Adventure 2, actually. I feel like it's not even the most well-liked of the 3d Sonics (that's probably Adventure 1, or maybe Sonic Colors).

SA2 is OK, but it definitely has some major flaws.

I guess it suffers from SA1 syndrome wherein the non-Sonic levels feel pretty lacklustre. The shooting levels are pretty mediocre throughout. The treasure hunting levels get way too big for their own good towards the end of the game, and the changed radar system (where you only detect one shard at a time) needlessly stretches things out more. The only reason I felt like I was slogging through these levels was to unlock more of the awesome Sonic and Shadow stages.

That said, I still think it's a good game. The Sonic and Shadow stages are far more refined compared to SA1, and the grinding mechanic really helps keep up momentum. They feel more speedy and less clunky compared to SA1. The Chao garden is relentlessly addictive and I wish they'd bring it back one of these days because it gave SA2 so much more lasting power. The music is excellent (and is probably the most consistently good thing about the Sonic franchise as a whole). But yeah, there are some major flaws that keep it from being the best of the 3D Sonic games, and dare I say that it's a little overated.

I prefer SA1 on the whole but I have no idea why. I guess I enjoyed the diversity more, and the hub worlds. Probably a nostalgia thing more than anything though, it definitely hasn't aged well.

Sonic 06 is not a finished game. It's just not. There are a shameful number of glitches/oddities, including a power-up that allows you to shrink to a tiny size and flip infinitely in the air (???). The plot and script just read like a bad fanfic. It's hilariously terrible.

Ok, I know this sounds unbelievable to you guys, as you are clearly civilized sonic fans, but......

I have never played a sonic game. Any ideas about where to start?

Please keep in mind that the gamecube is the oldest system I am willing to play. (No Sega genesis, sega CD, that stuff).

Honestly I was thinking about unleashed, but it seems a bit irregular compared to the basic sonic game formula.

If it's just hardware restraints stopping you from playing the classic series, I posted a few links to the steam versions of the classics a few posts back. There are also Wii and 360 ports. I recommend Sonic 3 and Knuckles the highest out of them all, although playing it costs a tad extra on the consoles.

If not, as weird as it sounds, I might start with Generations. Generations and Colors are pretty much the only universally well received 3D games. I hadn't played a sonic game in four years when I picked it up and it was awesome. Plus, Generations will really spark your interest in the rest of the series after seeing the levels.

Obviously, avoid Sonic 06 like the plague if you want a game to start with.

I'd recommend picking up Sonic Mega Collection for the Gamecube then, it's way cheaper then buying the games on the Arcades and plays better with the Gamecube controller.

Of course for your modern Sonic fix look no further than Colors, it's an absolute funfair that'll make you that much more ready to play Generations.

Sonic Adventures 2 holds up a little better than SA1, but it never captured the magic either. When SA1 came out and you saw the demo in stores it felt like gaming had jumped 10 years. Hell Skies of Arcadia looks better than some games at the end of the PS2's run. And as bad as Bigs was you didn't really mind the multiple characters the first time because we had never had such an adventure replayed through from different perspectives and storylines before, all culminating in SUPER SONIC. It wasn't really until Sly Cooper 2 that this was realized better.
