Hello, and welcome to the newest PU Next Best Thing! This project aims to discover sets for Pokemon in the PU metagame that may not be standard now, but actually work well enough to possibly become the new standard, or at least be quite effective. There are plenty of examples of new sets that have become just as standard as old sets or even overtaken them. As a community it is our goal in this thread to find new sets for established PU threats that may in time even be considered standard or at least close to it. If your favourite Pokemon is Grapploct, don't worry, we'll cover even niche Pokemon to give them a chance to shine!

Each week I will choose a Pokemon on the Viability Rankings. You will have 5 days to come up with and post an original set for that Pokemon (with name please), along with an explanation of how the set works. In the 2 days after that, the community will vote on which set (each person votes for 2 sets) is the most creative as well as viable. By "original sets", I mean sets that are not already being given main sets on analyses (for Pokemon that do not have in progress analyses yet you will have to use your judgment on what is considered creative and uncommon enough to be worthy of a set here, you can send me a pm here, on Pokémon Showdown! or on Discord if you aren't sure).

When choosing a set to nominate, you should keep in mind how viable and how unique it is. Despite this project being about uniqueness, please refrain from posting overly gimmicky sets like Choice Specs Morpeko. However, your set should not simply be a standard set with a slight deviation either, such as Leftovers over Life Orb on Offensive Spin Hitmonchan, unless that change achieves something notable. That said, single move changes are generally okay as long as the new move does something specific that the normal set cannot do, such as breaking past a certain check or counter.

IMPORTANT RULES:
  • Feel free to be as creative as you want, just make sure that you can prove that your set stands apart from the standard sets, especially if yours does not appear much different from the standard ones. Make sure your set is viable as well. The Smogon Strategy Dex is your best friend here.
  • Add an explanation to your post about what your innovation accomplishes, how it differentiates itself from standard creations, etc. It helps people, including the host and even yourself, to understand where your nomination is coming from. Not making one inconveniences others and is, quite frankly, lazy.
  • Adding formatting to your post in the correct areas also helps readers to understand how your set is special from the standard. Keep it under check, though; adding too much formatting doesn't help and just makes your post obnoxious to read.
  • Feel free to post replays of your set in action; this will only help everyone (including yourself) understand whether/how your set can be game changing in some particular situations.
  • Do not edit your nomination post after voting phase has started.
  • You may reserve sets, but must have the nomination up in 24 hours of that reservation. Afterwards, others may take your set if you do not get up your own set before them.
  • During voting stage, please don't vote for your own set; if you think your own set is the best, just abstain from the vote.
  • Bandwagon votes are not allowed and will not be counted
  • Changes in votes are allowed, but must be done within the two day deadline and as follows;

this thing has a seriously horrible movepool lol anyways reserving taunt mime

Okay so I'm pretty bad at making cool sets so I just made a standard one with Taunt over Spin.

Mr. Mime-Galar @ Eviolite
Ability: Screen Cleaner
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe

So basically this set is able to prevent setup or recovery while also functioning as a dangerous wincon with NP. Horrible description so I'll prob write more tomorrow since I'm super tired rn.

With Mr. Mime-Galar's movepool here is what I think can be the most interesting unorthodox set. It's fairly simple to understand, it's there to beat Lilligant, steal their stats boost and clean after. Vital Spirit allows it to not fall asleep and Eviolite + Hp investment both allow to have a 50% chance to live a +1 life orb pollen puff from full. Spa Investment Ohko's Lilligant from full and this set outspeed base 90 mons with max speed.
252 SpA Life Orb Lilligant Pollen Puff vs. 112 HP / 0 SpD Eviolite Mr. Mime-Galar: 166-198 (61.7 - 73.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock
220 SpA Mr. Mime-Galar Ice Beam vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Lilligant: 282-332 (100.3 - 118.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO
+1 252 SpA Life Orb Lilligant Pollen Puff vs. 112 HP / 0 SpD Eviolite Mr. Mime-Galar: 250-294 (92.9 - 109.2%) -- 50% chance to OHKO

Mr. Mime-Galar @ Blunder Policy
Ability: Screen Cleaner
EVs: 176 HP / 252 SpA / 80 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Nasty Plot
- Ice Beam
- Focus Blast
- Psyshock

This Blunder Policy Set has 2 Important Changes one is the evs 80 Evs in Spe allow to be at +2 and surpass Manectric Scarf and Drednaw Scarf and the rest in HP to have a little more bulky, the second is Psyshock that allows to do 2HKO to Lickylicky if we are at +2 in Spa and 31% chance of OHKO to Hitmonchan without Boost and +2 OHKO assured vs Hitmonchan, the truth is a very fun set to use.

+2 252+ SpA Mr. Mime-Galar Focus Blast vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Lickilicky: 332-392 (78.3 - 92.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
+2 252+ SpA Mr. Mime-Galar Psyshock vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Lickilicky: 232-274 (54.7 - 64.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ SpA Mr. Mime-Galar Psyshock vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Hitmonchan: 270-320 (88.8 - 105.2%) -- 31.3% chance to OHKO
+2 252+ SpA Mr. Mime-Galar Psyshock vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Hitmonchan: 542-638 (178.2 - 209.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Mr. Mime-Galar @ Leftovers
Ability: Screen Cleaner
EVs: 252 HP / 40 Def / 216 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Substitute
- Iron Defense
- Calm Mind
- Stored Power

So Mime's extra movepool is pretty barren as stated by many others, but it does have the really cool Iron Defense+Stored Power combination that can be useful. Basically turns it into a discount Galardash, but with Ice over Fairy as the STAB that doesn't get used. However, this does give it the ability to check opposing Mr. Mime and Mr. Rime. It could possibly run Nasty Plot to be more offensive, but the SpDef boost from CM helps with longevity. This set would be Heavy Duty Boots and Slack Off>Substitute if only Mr. Mime could be a little more like its evolved form.

Thank you all for submitting your creative sets! Here is mine:

Protox Mime-G!
:ss/Mr. Mime-Galar:
Mr. Mime-Galar @ Heavy-Duty Boots

EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Toxic
- Protect

- Freeze-Dry / Ice Beam
- Psychic / Rapid Spin / Focus Blast

Toxic + Protect has been somewhat 'popular' with some fast offensive Pokemon with some utility
cough Mane cough
So I decided I put it on Mime-G. Its many weaknesses allows it to be able to scout coverage with Protect as a bonus, and Toxic can cripple some defensive mons the team (and Mime) struggle to deal with. Of course, the set still allows it to maintain its offensive presence. Shame it doesn't get something like voltturn to pivot out.

Now we will vote! Please vote for 2 submissions, but if you feel the need to, you can vote only for 1 or just abstain for the week, given that you have the intention to vote of course. Don't vote for yourself... Here are the submissions:

Lycanroc-Midnight @ Choice Band
Ability: No Guard
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Stone Edge
- Sucker Punch
- Play Rough
- Stomping Tantrum / Close Combat

What's scarier than a No Guard Stone Edge from a Lycanroc? An immediately much stronger No Guard Stone Edge from a Lycanroc. What this set lacks in Speed compared to the Scarf set, it makes up for in sheer power. Stone Edge hits incredibly hard, even doing some good damage to resists (25% to defensive Stunfisk is quite a bit considering). The main draw of this set is the ability to break through one of the better Rock resists in Throh. CB Play Rough 2HKOs most Throh sets, even having a good chance to 2HKO max Defense Throh after Stealth Rock. This unfortunately means that you have to give up either Stomping Tantrum or Close Combat since Sucker Punch's priority is better for this set. I think Stomping Tantrum is a little better for doing more damage to Stunfisk, but either way, you'll have to hit it a few times to KO it which risks Static.

252 Atk Choice Band Lycanroc-Midnight Stomping Tantrum vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Stunfisk: 182-216 (43.1 - 51.1%) -- 4.7% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
252 Atk Choice Band Lycanroc-Midnight Play Rough vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Throh: 216-256 (48.6 - 57.6%) -- 95.3% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

- Play Rough / Iron Tail

Two of Lycanroc-Mn's biggest flaws are its reliance on prediction to consistently pick up KOs, and its middling Speed tier. This set hopes to mitigate these issues with the use of Rock Tomb, dealing out guaranteed slows with guaranteed STAB damage. Not only does this allow it to outspeed everything non-Scarfed in the tier turn 2, but also outspeed and chip potential switchins, helping it to more reliably secure KOs with less need for prediction.

Are you tired of getting hit by intimidate? Are you tired of getting countered by Mawile? Are you sick of getting your breaker statused? Well Substitute Lycanroc is for you! Not only that, but this Lycanroc is able to break defensive Pokemon such as Mareanie, and can even set up on something like a Shuckle do you run Swords Dance, although you do miss out on Sucker Punch rip
