Important Mechanical Changes:
  • All Dark, Dragon, Electric, Fire, Grass, Ice, Psychic, and Water moves are special moves. All Bug, Fighting, Flying, Ghost, Ground, Normal, Poison, Rock, and Steel moves are physical moves.
  • Sleep lasts for 1 to 6 turns. Sleep Talk will not always advance the sleep counter, as detailed here.
  • When the faster Pokemon faints, the opposing Pokemon does not get to move.
  • Taunt only lasts for 2 turns.
  • Encore lasts for 2 to 6 turns.
  • Counter and Mirror Coat treat Hidden Power as physical, regardless of type.
  • When a Pokemon faints, it gets replaced before the next Pokemon moves. If all non-fainted Pokemon have already moved, then the fainted Pokemon gets replaced before the end of the turn.
  • Thunder Wave does not activate Volt Absorb.

  • If a burned or poisoned Pokemon KOes its opponent, it will not take burn or poison damage that turn.
  • A frozen Pokemon cannot attack on the turn it thaws out.
  • If Sleep Talk chooses Rest, the Pokemon will regain all of its health and have its sleep counter reset. If Sleep Talk chooses Roar or Whirlwind and the user is faster than the opponent, it will fail. Sleep Talk always advances the sleep counter.
  • Phazing moves, Counter, and Vital Throw must go second in order to succeed.

:rb/tauros: RBY STAB :rb/snorlax:
Important Mechanics:
  • Rather than Special Attack and Special Defense stats, Pokemon simply have a Special stat that functions as both.
  • Items do not exist.
  • Sleep lasts for 0 to 6 turns. Also, a Pokemon cannot attack on the turn it wakes up. A Pokemon using Rest will wake up after 2 turns rather than 3.
  • If a Pokemon uses Rest while burned or paralyzed, it will retain the respective Attack or Speed drop until switching out. If a Pokemon uses an Attack or Speed boosting move while burned or paralyzed, respectively, the drops will be removed and the stat will raise as if no status was inflicted.
  • The probability of critical hits is determined by base Speed. The formula used is %CH = Base Speed x 100/512. Critical hits ignore all stat changes for both Pokemon, as well as the effects of Light Screen and Reflect. They also double the Level of user during damage calculations, meaning they deal around 1.95x damage at Level 100, but closer 1.5x at Level 5.
  • Bug is super effective against Poison, Poison is super effective against Bug, Ghost has no effect against Psychic, and Ice has normal effectiveness against Fire.
  • If a Pokemon KOes an opposing Pokemon or breaks a Substitute with Hyper Beam, it does not have to recharge the next turn.
  • A frozen Pokemon will not randomly thaw out.
  • The accuracy and critical hit rate of all moves is reduced by 0.4% (except Swift, which will never miss).
  • A poisoned or burned Pokemon loses 1/16 of its health rather than 1/8. Similarly, Leech Seed drains 1/16 of health rather than 1/8.
  • A Pokemon hit by a partial trapping move cannot attack for the duration of the attack. However, it can switch out of the partial trapping move.
  • Steel and Dark do not exist as types.
  • Night Shade and Seismic Toss hit everything, regardless of type.
  • If Explosion or SelfDestruct is used against a Pokemon behind a Substitute and breaks the Substitute, the user will not faint.
  • Roar and Whirlwind have no effect.
  • Haze removes major status conditions from the opponent.
  • Pokemon are immune to secondary status effects from attacks of their type. So, Normal-type can't be paralyzed by Body Slam, Ice-types can't be frozen, etc.
  • Counter misses if the last selected move's Base Power is 0, if the last move used by the opponent is not Normal- or Fighting-type (or is Counter), or if the last move used in battle (by either player) did no damage. Damage dealt is based on this move's damage, even if it was the Counter user who used it.
Click here for more detailed information.

GSC STABmons is a really cool format with a lot of interesting stuff to use in it, and I came up with an idea for a team.

:gs/Nidoking: :gs/Aerodactyl: :gs/Snorlax: :gs/Blissey: :gs/Raikou: :gs/Skarmory:

Nidoking is a nice lead with Spikes+Lovely Kiss. Aero is extremely powerful, 130 Speed+STAB Aeroblast as well as Rock Slide make it a pretty good sweeper, so passing SD to it sounds like a smart idea. Lax and Blissey are bulky and Lax can use the SD well on its own with its high attack. Raikou is able to really support well with Thunder Wave and Roar while hitting hard and lastly Skarm can stop opposing Snorlax or Baton Pass with Whirlwind. Very little can stop a rampaging +2 Aeroblasting Aero...

:gs/Snorlax:

Lax on its own is pretty busted lol. With 32PP Recover the shit never dies and can do so much more with its bigger move pool

RBY Announcement:
I’m happy at the immediate interest in Old Gens STAB, especially the oldest of generations. At the suggestion of Plague von Karma and SectoniaServant, I’ll be adding a few moves to the RBY STABmons banlist:
-Bind
-Clamp
-Spore
-Wrap
Thank you to both of you for your insight on some mechanics I hadn’t considered! Fire Spin will not be restricted at this time as the majority of Fire-types naturally learn it, but it will be watchlisted for now, along with Arcanine as it utilizes Agility+Fire Spin. Additionally, Amnesia will be watchlisted due to the boosting it provides Psychic-types.

Aerodactyl direly needs to be banned from gen 4 STABmons. It has two reliable switchins, being Forretress and Hippowdon, and sits in the highest viable unboosted Speed tier.

Because it only really needs Head Smash and Brave Bird to do its job it is free to run whatever coverage or support moves it wants in the last two slots, meaning it can set rocks, Pursuit on forced switches, or fit Toxic for Hippo or a Fire move for Forretress. It does very similar things to what it did in Gen 7 STABmons where it was banned, but with even less counterplay, in a slower metagame where it can force more switches.

https://pokepast.es/2bbad302a127b4f7 here's the team I built. Don't use it, it's really just 6 sets. The Swellow is awful, the rest seem fine.

Hello everyone! I have been discussing with the RBY Community Discord and we are very happy to see RBY STABmons getting some recognition. We are happy that you went ahead to establish a few ground rules. Mainly, we are very glad to see Partial-Trapping gone, as that perpetuated some pretty degenerate strategies, mainly Jolteon being on every team and people being forced to run Electrode just to have some kind of answer to it. However, we had a few concerns regarding your approach to banning Sleep-inducing moves. I would strongly recommend either banning all Sleep Moves entirely or not at all. As it stands right now, you are unintentionally promoting some pretty unhealthy strategies. For example, Jolteon typically would run Lovely Kiss. Now that Lovely Kiss is banned, Jolteon can choose to run Sing. Sing does have a lower accuracy, but more often than not, it produces the same result as Lovely Kiss. Banning Lovely Kiss but not Sing does not address the fundamental problem, which is Sleep moves on absurdly fast Pokemon. For the same reason, I would strongly advise banning Hypnosis as well, which is mainly abused by Alakazam. Rather than banning Lovely Kiss and Spore, the Discord and I would suggest:
1) Ban Spore, Lovely Kiss, Sleep Powder, Hypnosis, and Sing from non-native learners.
2) Ban Spore, Lovely Kiss, Sleep Powder, Hypnosis, and Sing in general.
3) Do not ban any Sleep-inducing move.

The in between approach taken thus far just doesn't really address the problem, assuming there is one at all. For example, limiting Exeggutor to Sleep Powder over Spore isn't exactly a good way to balance it.

Anyway, please do not take this as an attack or anything. I and the rest of the Discord are, again, very happy to see RBY STABmons being treated as a real tier and finally receiving the fixes it needs. Thank you for reading and please consider these suggestions. Cheers!

Also please fix this:
Bug is super effective against Poison and has normal effectiveness against Ghost, Poison is super effective against Bug, Ghost has no effect against Psychic, and Ice has normal effectiveness against Fire.
Bug is resisted by Ghost in Generation I.

Thank you for the notes! Sorry for the late response, I wanted to gather my thoughts on this and ask around, but you're completely right. Sleep as a whole in RBY is a different beast than in other gens and that's something I overlooked when considering the original banlist; I think that it would be best for the metagame to restrict all sleep moves from non-native learners for the time being. I don't believe non-native sleep moves at the present moment are something deserving of a quick ban, and I'd like to see more discussion/play before making that decision.

Also, it's great to hear that the RBY community has taken interest in STAB! I hope this interest continues and I'd love to hear more from you all in the future, so I'll be sure to keep in touch! Thank you :)

Also please fix this:
Bug is resisted by Ghost in Generation I.
I have no idea how this even happened LOL I swear I didn't put that myself but after scouring through all of the sources I used I have yet to find anything that says this... fixed now at least

generation five my beloved

i have a lot of thoughts so ive hidden them inside my spoiler tags. dont say i dont treat you

:landorus-therian::dragonite::gyarados::salamence: These four have strong Flying-type STAB moves available to them, in the form of Drill Peck, which is kinda weak, Brave Bird, which has recoil, and most importantly, Flying Gem Acrobatics, a spammable 110 BP move with no drawbacks. I imagine the four of them will be quite dangerous to face, especially Landorus-T backed by Sand. Landorus now also has access to Spikes, being able to set them up in the face of walls such as Skarmory.

:ferrothorn:Ferrothorn has would-be reliable recovery in Synthesis, but since it enjoys Rain so much it's probably not a good idea. Besides that, access to Sleep Powder, Horn Leech and Metal Burst make Ferrothorn the defensive threat it's always been.

Important calc: 252 Atk Landorus-Therian Acrobatics (110 BP) vs. 252 HP / 48 Def Ferrothorn: 148-175 (42 - 49.7%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery (Ferrothorn can strike back with a powerful Metal Burst, coming close to an OHKO thanks to Iron Barbs)

:garchomp::gastrodon::Gliscor:The Gen 4 Ground-types that start with G all get access to Spikes, which is an improvement over Stealth Rock in most occasions. Garchomp also has access to Dragon Dance, putting it slightly over the edge.

:alakazam::celebi::jirachi::latias::latios::reuniclus: All Psychic-types receive Psystrike, a direct improvement over Psyshock.

:politoed::ninetales: Both setters gain strong nukes in Rain-boosted Water Spout and Sun-boosted Eruption. Even after Ninetales is forced to switch into Stealth Rock, it can utilize potent new moves in Searing Shot and Fiery Dance.

:rotom: How does Rotom work? Are STAB mechanics going to be consistently applied through generations in Rotom's case as it was changed from Gen 7 to Gen 8? If old mechanics are applied, Rotom-Wash and Rotom-Heat can spam Water Spout and Eruption respectively, while the other forms can't do much. If new mechanics apply, Rotom has reliable recovery in Roost (or the unreliable Synthesis in the middle of so much weather) and access to Scald, Searing Shot, Energy Ball, Aeroblast, among other strong moves.

:thundurus-therian: Thundurus-T is an incredibly potent sweeper with access to strong Flying-type STAB. It lacks access to Weather Ball in its native generation, but I imagine it's quite the threatening sweeping force.

:tyranitar: With no reliable recovery, Tyranitar is not as great as you'd expect. Newfound access to Sucker Punch and Spikes are good new additions, though.

:chansey::blissey: The pink blobs can carry lots of new moves such as Roar, Whirlwind, Rapid Spin, Transform, Yawn, Glare, Reflect Type and Conversion. These two will always be viable, so I won't bother commenting further.

its midnight and i want to sleep bye bye

Updates
USUM
First off, I'm looking for more recent Sample Teams here, I'd love it if people could post the teams they used in OM Classic or anything else they are willing to share. Here's a team of my own:
:ss/garchomp::ss/toxapex::ss/celesteela::ss/scizor-mega::ss/greninja-ash::ss/heatran: (Click sprites for pokepaste)
Not gonna go into too much detail on this team, but I wanted to build around Mega Scizor which I think is one of the coolest threats in the meta and blanket checks a bunch of annoying Pokemon. I also wanted to use Choice Band Greninja-Ash because it's hilariously strong after transforming and Pursuit goes brrr.

Also, I do wanna open discussion on things people may think are problematic in the metagame. I'm most likely not looking to take any action on anything at the moment unless there's some overwhelming feedback for something in particular, but I would love to hear opinions on things like Greninja-Ash, Medicham-Mega, and others.

ORAS
I've finally gotten around to sifting through the teams on the thread and have added Sample Teams!

While I think this metagame has some issues like Extreme Speed and/or Lopunny-Mega, I don't think there's any reason to make changes to this metagame without more plays and discussion. Maybe if we ever run another tour here.

BW2
Nothing at the moment! Would love to try this meta out more but I haven't gotten around to it yet beyond a few games. Here's a team though!
:bw/gyarados::bw/ferrothorn::bw/garchomp::bw/heatran::bw/sableye::bw/latias:

DPP
I've been meaning to write about this for like 3 months now but have been lazy, but Aerodactyl is absolutely busted and has been banned here! That's all for now, DPP STAB honestly is bonkers to play I'd love to try it out a lot more in the future.

ADV
Nothing at the moment! Have only gotten to play this one in an RoA room tour once and from that the meta seemed fun! Here's another team lol:
:rs/suicune::rs/snorlax::rs/magneton::rs/salamence::rs/metagross::rs/heracross:

GSC
Yeah Snorlax is gone yeet... why this wasn't on the initial banlist idk but 32 PP Recover with access to Swords Dance if it wants on already the most broken Pokemon in the generation is just too much to not completely warp the meta. The meta without Snorlax will be very interesting to see.
Team Dump:
:gs/cloyster::gs/zapdos::gs/vaporeon::gs/exeggutor::gs/steelix::gs/blissey: Baton Pass Vaporeon
:gs/golem::gs/vaporeon::gs/heracross::gs/raikou::gs/skarmory::gs/ursaring: Swords Dance Ursaring

RBY
I've been having a ton of fun exploring this metagame! I think that it's a little busted, but there's very little that can be done to the banlist to make things better. I'm highly against restricting any more moves as it stands because any more move restrictions will make this metagame far too similar to RBY OU which I'd like to steer away from. I think that Tauros is a good target for a ban. Swords Dance Tauros has practically no checks, bar the incredibly rare Aerodactyl and other faster mons that can chip it. I'll keep you all updated on this banlist as I'm not fully sold on banning anything yet and am enjoying the current metagame a lot.
Team Dump:

:rb/exeggutor::rb/tauros::rb/chansey::rb/rhydon::rb/snorlax::rb/starmie:

TL;DR
Aerodactyl banned in DPP STABmons
Snorlax banned in GSC STABmons
Sample Teams added for ORAS, GSC, and RBY STABmons

Was building some teams that I thought I'd share here, been enjoying gsc and rby stabmons a lot and will continue to explore more in those metas.

RBY: Amnesia Spam Offense (:jynx: :starmie: :tauros: :chansey: :snorlax: :alakazam:)

One of the biggest changes between this format and regular OU is the addition of Amnesia to psychic types, and this team takes full advantage of that with 3 amnesia psychics in Jynx, Starmie and Alakazam. Jynx is a terrifying lead with access to sleep + a chance for setup, while the other two psychics have more longevity with recovery on both. I opted to make snorlax a more specially variant in order to serve as a soft check to the amnesia mons. Chansey is another one of these stop gaps with transform and it's huge special bulk that is able to limit these mons. Tauros with swords dance is also very threatening and can sweep a lot of teams once they've been chipped or para'd.

GSC: Lead TTar Balance (:Tyranitar: :zapdos: :vaporeon: :dragonite: :blissey: :heracross: )

With the addition of spikes to ground types, there are a lot more options that open up for both spiker and lead options. I opted for TTar in this role as it's access to pursuit thief and spikes made it an appealing lead to me, though nidoking could also do a similar role too but with sleep. Zapdos doesn't have anything for it changed except for opting for HP-water, which is mainly for Golems but can also help vs steelix. Vaporeon with the normal type stabs via eevee becomes a great all around mon, being able to team support with heal-bell but also setup with growth surf. Dragonite is something I toyed with, as a huge attack stat and aeroblast interested me and decided to make it a standard resttalk set. Blissey is another utility mon, with spin and transform it can keep control of hazards but also be an anti-setup mon, especially vs opposing curse sets. Heracross is the last mon I have, and the additon of Cross Chop really fit's it like a glove, as it gets a strong fighting stab that can even break through strong walls if it crits.

I don't have a ton of time right now, but I want to make a few quick notes about the RBY VR. First of all: great job! I'm glad the tier is getting more attention and resources. Anyway, on to nominations.

Vaporeon -> B+
Vaporeon has a ton of variety, thanks to its absolutely massive movepool. One thing in particular that I think you missed, however, is the Transform set. Vaporeon has a huge HP stat and access to Reflect, making it a great abuser of Transform. It can actually shut down Amnesia users. Combine this with Crabhammer and Normal-type classics and you have a very good Pokemon.

Gyarados -> B / B-
This is basically just Aerodactyl. Drill Peck, Crabhammer, and a good typing make it relevant.

Persian -> B / B-
Basically a second Tauros with higher Speed. It's solid, albeit not too interesting.

Flareon -> C
Flareon has a really solid movepool like Vaporeon. The typing isn't as good, but it's a solid user of moves like Swords Dance, Quick Attack, and Explosion. The 130 Attack Stat is nothing to scoff at.

Additionally, I think Snorlax's Transform set should be added to the Set List.

Thank you for consideration. Cheers!

edit: Put Super Fang on Chansey.

Hey there, I've played RBY STABmons before and just wanted to chip in some thoughts:

Sludge is awful, don't use it on any Pokemon. After STAB, it is still slightly weaker than Double-Edge. Just use Hyper Beam on Tentacruel and Victreebel. Speaking of Tentacruel, any Water-type that doesn't use Amnesia or Growth should always run Crabhammer over Surf. The damage output is nearly double that of Surf.

That sample Vaporeon barely takes advantage of all the crazy options available to it. Crabhammer is a huge upgrade to Surf unless you're going for a GSC style Growth set, and with how weak Body Slam is it's much better to just use Glare instead to spread paralysis. Transform is also a very good option available to it, as Volk brought up, and should be a primary set.

Jolteon should have Super Fang on its sample set, it softens up Electric resists way more than any of its coverage. Explosion is also a good option for a lead set due to Explosion OHKOing Jynx and Alakazam.

Scyther should not be on the VR list at all. It is barely upgraded from vanilla Scyther, only gaining Drill Peck which does less than Slash on neutral hits, and Twineedle which only does a little more than Slash against most Psychics, and not enough to matter.

Clefable and Poliwrath are two Pokemon that should probably be able to squeeze in somewhere on the rankings. Clefable has decent stats and the absurd movepool granted by being a pink blob in vanilla RBY and a Normal-type in STABMons to do just about anything you could think of. Status? Sing and Thunder Wave access. Setup? Swords Dance and Growth. Transform? It has Reflect and Light Screen to make its Transformed self super tanky. Wall? Recover, Reflect and Light Screen. Raw offense? Slash, Explosion and plenty of coverage. Poliwrath meanwhile has Crabhammer resistance, High Jump Kick to hammer the top tier Normals supported by Crabhammer to hit Fighting resists, and access to Hypnosis, all of which should make for a solid offensive mon.

Small update:
The RBY STABmons VR has been updated again to reflect some of the nominations above, and sample sets have been reworked some! We're also looking for Sample Team submissions, so feel free to submit anything you may have.

On an exciting note, the first RBY STABmons forum tour has just opened for signups! Come check out this really fun meta with the RBY community!
