strategies for countering trick

**General Summary** **Read this first!** I have a habit of talking out of my ass, so I'm just going to sum up the whole post here. The first few paragraph is a rant about how much and why I hate scarf tricking, but the rest is my search for a scarf-trick counter and my invitation to post your strategies for beating or playing around scarf-trick.

Viable Strategies posted:
Admit that trickscarf is broken and use it to counter enemy trickscarf
Use Gastrodon over Swampert (recover yay?)
Switch in choice scarf Tyranitar and use Pursuit (Wi-Fi only)

Scarf tricking has become the most influential, and in my opinion most damaging, of the new strategies unleashed by Platinum. I might just be set in my ways, but I consider myself pretty adaptable, I had no problems in the transfer from ADV to DP until Garchomp starting mutating into it's current form. However, I recently stopped playing the game out of frustration because of scarf-trick, which destroyed my mostly balanced teams and left me at the mercy of hyper offensive teams that now dominate platinum. There is only one way to prevent the opponent from doing it, which is to have a pokemon that already has choice scarf on your team. It cannot be taunted because of the speed increase. It's effects cannot be reversed once it has been done, unlike stealth rocks. It's effects usually destroy any strategy above *set up stealth rocks* or *attack* that a pokemon would hope to implement on it's own, creating the currently suicidal hyperaggressive zerger metagame and leaving no room for any alternative to succeed, a bandwagon situation.

At first it seemed to me that the only way to counter it was to have a pokemon with choice scarf on the team, and switch it in on the predicted switch. Obviously they would then be locked into trick, and would have to switch, netting me a free turn. While this would only temporarily solve the problem, it was the only solution I could think of. Much to my chagrin, when I tried to implement this strategy, I found that instead of the opponent being locked into trick after swapping choice scarfs, they were free to choose another move and go for the KO! Giving them a bad item like lagging tail, etc was out of the question, as they would just trick it to another pokemon later.

I have been told that this is an error in Shoddy's programming. If it is indeed a mistake and has indeed been fixed since I last played Shoddy, I'll edit my post to match that. As it stands though, scarf-tricking to me is a broken strategy that cannot be countered without using it. That is to say, the only way in my mind to counter scarf-trick is to use scarf-trick. A player who uses this strategy takes absolutely no risk in doing so, as they know that they will
A) neuter one of their opponents pokemon by removing access to it's moves
B) force their opponent to waste a turn by luring out their opponent's scarf and be able to switch out or stay in and attack, without losing a turn in the process.

Basically you can't go wrong by using the trick scarf strategy. Either you get something great or lose nothing. It's probably the only move in the game, aside from stealth rock, that is impossible to mispredict with. I have heard about people "learning how to beat trick". I am interested in what the smogon community has come up with for beating this strategy.

you beat trick by continuing with your strategy. I basically say "ok well uh thanks for the speed / power, ill use it to my advantage later, in the meantime, i will just continue with my strategy and your tricking isnt going to hinder me, it just means i have to switch things up a bit"

if you are using a whole stall team or a team that relys entirely on one pokemon then yes trick could definitely mess you up lol but you probably shouldnt be playing like that or at the very least, you should have planned on how to continue playing when one of your teammates get tricked.

muk and swalot are also avaialable to counter it lol

Or you know, there is substitute.

You've got to have a plan of someone you don't mind taking a scarf. It's just part of the game, the same way you have to have someone to go to when Scizor pops his ugly red face in.

Use the Choice item to your advantage (if possible) or switch into a Scarf Pokemon. There are a lot of ways to counter Trick. Its how you approach it that shows how badly crippled you are from it or not.

May I suggest this obvious idea?: Predict a Trick and Trick it back!

Care to elaborate? It's still going to threaten to trick me later, creating an endless cycle.
Perhaps you mean sending in a pokemon that has trick but that has no item. In that case I would prevent them from being able to trick scarf onto another of my pokemon later, but they would still be able to steal an item from me.

How about this then: How do I counter trick without using the strategy on my team? If I have to use the move to counter the move, than that move is broken.

You could screw with them by switching in a Flame Orb Guts user or Psycho Shift Cress, or a Macho Brace Zong. Black Sludge works if you have a Poison-type; switch back to it if you think it will Trick again.

Flame Orb Guts got me all excited about a burned Ursaring with choice scarf, but then I realized that switching any kind of orb pokemon into trick denies them their status condition while still burdening them with a choice scarf. Lagging tail Zong is interesting, switch into the trick, then use trick while they switch then SR while they switch again and then explode.

Except that I'm still using trick to counter trick.

the artic one, I thought sticky hold doesn't work on trick? If it does, then you just came up with the first trick counter that doesn't use trick. Gastrodon can do more than just recover right?

Switch in Choice Band/Choice Scarf Tyranitar and Pursuit the switching Psychic/Ghost Pokemon (they'll be locked into Trick on every battle medium but Shoddy) for a OHKO.

In regards to Trick and depending on my options these seem to always work well for me...

Switch in mixed attacker
Switch in Gastrodon or Muk
Switch in Trick user
Substitute
Taunt

or plain out kill it.

Many of the trick users are special sweepers and are weak to pursuit, so sending in CB Tar, Scizor or Weavile can spell their demise.

counters for trick? OVERCENTRALIZING!!!

but seriously everyone tricks scarf. keep yourself a heatran and you can use that as a trick taker and if they trick specs its ok too. beware of choice band.

My general strategy is to use a pokemon that can absorb it. Generally, I send in my choice scarfer and trade scarf for scarf, then they get stuck with a scarf.

Trick is usually telegraphed, so I send in my own Choiced Pokemon, of which I have two, to absorb it. Trick not working right on Shoddy ruins it a bit though.

It would be much easier to counter if Trick worked correctly on Shoddy.

This. Just switch in your own Choice user and they are locked in to Trick and forced to switch. If it worked properly those Jirachi and Metagross wouldn't be so fearless to Trick due to the threat of Scarf Magnezone coming in and screwing the over completely. Actually if it worked right on Shoddy I could see Dugtrio having an entirely new role. At trapping and countering Trick scarfers who aren't levitators or fliers. I'd definitely try a Dugtrio in my main teams if they fixed Shoddy so it worked right.

This talk about using Gastrodon and Muk is stupid - both these Pokemon aren't competing in the OU enviroment where Porygon-z can OHKO a damn Blissey with a special attack.

Honestly there's no way to beat Trickscarf, it's a waste of a moveslot generally and most Pokemon will happily accept a Choice Scarf (Tyranitar, Heracross, Metagross, Jirachi, Magnezone, etc). If you encounter a Pokemon that is commonly known to carry Trick, just send in a Pokemon that will take a Scarf with minimal problems.

The problem with getting them to Trick a bad item is that they can Trick it back and really screw you up later. The bad item is a short term annoyance for them, but you have to pick that item carefully so that it doesn't bite you in the ass later.

That's not half of the problem for me tho. Most of the Pokemon with trick are also flaunting more kickass sets than just that. Metagross, starmie, gengar, rotom-a, etc. all have other sets that are viable.

Yeah, it's like you switch in your own Scarfgar to take a Starmie or Rotom Trick and you just get smacked. I don't really like what Trick and Rotom forms have done. Really makes me consider using Gastrodon or Muk. Except they're both crippled by Will-o-Wisp.

all it means is that psychics/ghosts are harder for blissey+friends to immediately counter. it makes full stall essentially obslete but that's nothing new. just teambuild with something that either
-has trick
-doesnt mind speed
or
-you "lose" a pokemon (which also happens when your heatran is eqd)
no one is completely crippled by it really, even blissey. she can ppstall which is at least "baseline functional"

being opened up to setup by trick isn't anything as certain as being opened up to setup by dsds =\

also:
Trick 3.22%
just below cm/wish!

Trick has low usage because it only needs to be used once in a match to be effective.

The most I have ever tricked in a match was twice once to exchange Choice Scarf for a Focus Sash . . . and then once I took a hit Focus Sash for Leftovers.

Moves like Wish and Calm Mind are moves that more pokes cary and are spammed in battle.
