The Everything NFL Thread - 2009

To be fair, if you consider the last play of the Vikings-49ers game a fluke, then I consider the blocked field goal at the end of the second quarter a fluke. Do you see the problem here? Don't make excuses, please. By your reasoning, the Cardinals should have won the Super Bowl last year because James Harrison's (who actually deserved the MVP award of that game) interception touchdown at the end of the first half was a "fluke" too. The only actual flukes that occur in football are when penalties that should not have been called are in fact called (I can think of a couple games last year that fall under this category).

agreed. these are just great plays :)

Joe Flacco for MVP? My lord this UD man is out of his mind.

Should be a great game next week vs. New England. If we win that I think the Ravens are easily the #1 team in the NFL. If not, we have a chance to recover against Cincinnati and @Minnesota. Should be some good games.

WaterBomb is a massive (yet disgruntled) Steelers fan.

Also yeah even as a fellow ravens fan (I didn't know you went for them fabbles <3) I don't think they are the best team quite yet, even if we beat the Pats I still say the Jets are playing better then us atm, not to mention the Saints. However, if we go at least 2-1 on this 3 game trip, then I will buy into the idea that we are the best in the NFL.

Jets and Giants both look like tough teams, but Sanchez has a long way to go, Manning seems to be a little relaxed. He went through this game and stopped playing after the 3rd, probably because the Bucks suck? But w/e, Pats gotta come much harder and play much better.

I dont know who im hoping wins the Ravens and Pats game. I really hate the pats, but , i dont want the Ravens to win the division =/

Well, I am at least encouraged by the fact that we played well (on both sides of the ball) every game so far this year. The games we lost were by last-second scores by the opposing team, after we pretty much dominated the bulk of the game. Right now we need to work on putting games away instead of letting teams come back on us. Even losing today, I think the Steelers are a better team overall than the Bengals. But that doesn't matter in the end, all that matters is your record. Time for the Steelers to start playing like the Super Bowl champions: for ALL FOUR quarters.

Joe Flacco >>>>>> Matt Ryan. Yeah thats right I'm saying it.

That said I think MARK SANCHISE FRANCHEZ will be better than both. First rookie to QB to win go 3-0? While beating the Pats and Titans, two of NYJ's most hated enemies? And he's the most handsome QB is Nfl History? I am officially on the Sanchez Bandwagon.

However, neither the Ravens, Falcons, or Jets will make the Super Bowl.

Peyton Manning gets his 2nd MVP in a row. Pierre Garcon makes the Pro Bowl (along with Wayne and Clark) and in the Super Bowl, they will play....

Carolina. If not then the Giants.

And Colts win against whomever they play.

Come February 2010, remember these words B|

The Jets are seeming a lot like the Ravens of last year. Rookie QB with a weapon or two, and a strong defense to keep them in the game. Ravens did good until they faced the Steelers... where the Ravens lack of offense showed. The Jets don't have a fantastic offense either and will fail against most good defenses... if they decide to play. A lot of the "top tier" teams are starting to fall this year. The Patriots haven't been spectacular, the steelers have been..lol, colts have been ok and a lot of other teams have been disfunctional. Point is... the Jets are good, but they aren't Super Bowl good. Stop with the hype plz x_x

the steelers have been..lol

Actually, the Steelers haven't played badly at all. Their offense is doing well (the O-line was MUCH better this week), their defense is keeping the opposing offenses to moderate stats at best, and they've acquired a nice weapon on special teams in Stefan Logan. They're a 1-2 team that could just as easily be 3-0. If they can fix their problem of protecting leads, they will still finish the season with a top record in the AFC. I'm not worried yet, it's still way too early in the season to tell.

Also, the Ravens offense is better yes, but you can't really say Joe Flacco is an MVP when his first three opponents were the Chefs, Chargers, and Browns. The only one of those three that is any good is the chargers, and they still have a god awful pass defense that allowed Flacco to excel. Don't get me wrong, I have alot of respect for the guy and what he is doing. I just want to see this new and improved Ravens offense put to a better test than it has seen these first weeks.

i'm in the same boat as waterbomb, so pissed with the steelers lol

the loss of troy polamalu sucks, it has a lot to do with why we've dropped two really close games

Don't worry, WaterBomb. Flacco will have plenty of chances to redeem himself against your Steelers this year, not to mention these next three weeks. If we split with the Steelers and have at least 12 wins I think Flacco for MVP should be taken seriously. Every team has creampuffs on their schedule.

The Jets of this year are basically the Ravens of last year. I can see them making it to the playoffs, but there are too many experienced AFC teams that would be able to knock them out. Sanchez may have started 3-0, but he won't break Flacco's rookie post season record.

Giants, Ravens, Colts, Saints, Jets, Vikings, and Broncos still sitting at 3-0, with plenty of dangerous teams at 2-1 (and 1-2, for you Steelers). I believe that all 3-0 teams are good enough to make the playoffs, even the Broncos, who can win their division if SD falters. Too early to predict Super Bowl though... should be a wild year.

Didn't the Steelers start out slow last year? And the Giants were like 0-3 the year before? lol

Still I agree with Yoshi. This current decade is almost over, and as such, the reigns are being passed.

The Dynasties of New England and the Steelers won't last much longer, but we have the likes of Matt Ryan, Mark Sanchez, Joe Flacco, and Adrian Peterson leading the future of the NFL (hopefully new players like Colt McCoy and Tim Tebow can come in and make an impact)

Oh btw, the Colts look alright? The Colts look undefeated to me

last season the steelers started out 2-1, and then didn't lose another game until week 8. giants started 0-2 in 2007.

why would the current "dynasties" be at the end of their run just because a new decade is about to begin? aside from that being a silly statement, ben roethlisberger is still quite young and brady has at least 4 to 5 good years left in him, both teams have consistently solid defenses, and excellent scouting departments to keep bringing in talent in the draft. it's way too early to say that these teams are on their last legs, so to speak. they should be a threat for a long time, at least as long as their QBs are still playing and their coaches and scouts are still among the best in the league.

i agree that there are some great young players with bright futures (for themselves and their teams) ahead of them.

if flacco keeps performing like this against teams with GOOD defenses and the ravens keep winning, then yeah, sure, he deserves a look at MVP. but it is faaaaar too early to tell.

arizona is so overrated

Did anybody else find that early lateral attempt stupid? I think Pittsburg could've got two shots at the endzone but noooo he has to try to be the hero.

I'll admit, I thought Sanchez was just another overrated USC QB, but you can't deny that a 3-0 start is rather impressive for a rookie QB...

And Colts pretty much roll over the Cardinals. Once again, boo yah! Whoever thought this would be a close one was definitely a bit off, much less seeing a Cardinals win. Come on, you're forgetting that this is the team who hasn't seen the postseason for how many years before last year? Much less a winning record? Yeah...

Sanchez diserves a lot of credit. He may be a rookie, but some people just have a football gene inside of them. I honestly think that Jets are going to get into the Playoffs. Superbowl? Not so much. Colts seem to have a thing for Payton. But when it comes down to the Manning brothers, the Saints - Giants game next week will prove who the better brother is.

But when it comes down to the Manning brothers, the Saints - Giants game next week will prove who the better brother is.

The Saints play the Jets next week...but I don't see how there can be a comparison between the Manning brothers. Eli I would say is a slightly above average QB, comparable to, say...Chad Pennington or Kurt Warner. He's surrounded by an extremely talented team (especially the O-line and RBs) so he doesn't have to throw much. His older brother, however, has been operating without a significant running game since Edgerrin James was in his prime. I don't think Eli would be nearly as good as he has been if he were asked to throw 50+ times a game and pretty much carry his team's offense as Peyton has.

The colts have also played 3 terrible teams...The Colts always have a very easy schedule.
Their division is a joke...can't even say "oh but the titanzzz!!" they're 0-3

@Lord Blood: I hate the Colts and everything about Peyton Manning..but to say Eli is a better QB is just disgusting.

Also...Fuck yeah Bengals!!

Umm...Jacksonville, Miami, and Arizona are far from terrible teams. They might not be the greatest teams, but to say they're terrible is a bit of an exaggeration.

Joke division? Just because the Titans are 0-3 doesn't make them bad. They've lost all their games by close margins, two of which were against very good teams, and the third against a team that has much potential. The Texans might be extremely inconsistent, but that offense has alot of explosiveness with -arguably- the best receiver in the NFL. The same can be said for Jacksonville, with an asset like Jones-Drew. You can never really count these teams out on a particular Sunday.

Let's try not to let our hatred of a team prevent us from accurately evaluating them. I hate the Ravens and the Patriots with a fiery passion but I still can acknowledge their strengths and weaknesses.
