The Everything NFL Thread - 2009

the chargers almost lost to the dallas cowboys (which isn't a bad team) and allowed brady quinn and the browns to mount an impressive 4th quarter comeback attempt.

over the course of the regular season, the chargers have averaged the third least rushing yards per game and are below average in rush yards allowed per game.

i mean, i think they are the team that matches up the best with the indianapolis colts and the chargers are clearly a pretty good football team. but let's not get ahead of ourselves.

On the subject of overtime, I dunno if its already been done but I reckon giving a team equal amounts of offensive possesions until one fails to score, much like tennis gives everyone a chance to hold serve in the fifth set, would be best.

Example:

Team A receives possesion and scores
Team B then receives possesion to get a chance to match what team A did and score.
Team A then fails to score
Team B scores, and as they had equal offensive opportunity to team A, the game is therefore deemed over. I know its not a perfect system or anything, but I do believe that it is a better way to do things, and still puts equal emphasis on defense winning games in OT.

I agree with this, because I am a firm believer in defense. I like the idea of more fairness in overtime but not to the point where teams completely disregard defense because they know they'll get a chance on offense.

Also Merry Christmas to everyone. Anyone else think the Titans will upset the Chargers tomorrow night? I've got a few bucks on it :)

Anyone who doesn't think the Chargers are legit SB contenders by now should hand in their money to me.

Seriously, they played ridiculously well last night. Their run defense could have used a tad of work, but apart from that, they look unstoppable right now. Add the fact that Indy does poorly against them, and it seems like they're tops in AFC. Unless the Steelers ride a hot streak into the playoffs, the only team that they should even be remotely worried about is NE, and maybe Indy.

Uhh the Ravens went into Qualcomm and beat the Chargers... and don't give me the they didn't have LT. LT would not have been able to break off that 80+ catch for TD early in the game, and our defense is much more susceptible to quick, hard to tackle backs. The Chargers want nothing to do with any of the AFC North.

At that time, the Chargers were playing poorly (they had to come back against the RAIDERS the week prior). Even then, the game was close, and it was Ray Lewis who saved them with that brilliant move. Otherwise, the Chargers had a pretty good chance

Now, with a super-hot team who's just hitting their stride, who do you think would win?

They beat a very decent Titans team in Tennessee 42-17. If that isn't convincing I don't know what is. 10 straight wins.

And the Ravens were playing amazing? They barely scraped by the Chiefs the first week. As I said, the last opponent the Chargers want to see is a AFC North foe. I would give the Chargers an edge this time around, but only because the Ravens secondary is in shambles. Intimidation factor is pretty big, but with Flacco scoring a signature win on a 4th quarter drive, he would be fine. Not to mention he went 2-1 on the road in the Playoffs last year, product of a good defense or not.

Still think we'll lose to the Steelers this week. However, I think both Ravens and Steelers would make the playoffs in such a situation. Jacksonville is a subpar team. Miami will lose to the Steelers if not to Houston. Jets have a tough schedule. Denver will lose to Philly.

If anything, will be a very exciting and competitive Sunday.

in order for the steelers to make the playoffs in the "most likely" scenario,

1) they need to win out against baltimore and miami (neither team is a pushover and each is fighting for the playoffs as well).
2) they need denver to lose once (philly and kc)
3) they need jacksonville to lose once (new england and cleveland)
4) they need nyj to lose once (indy and cincinnati)

assuming baltimore beat oakland in the final week, baltimore would be the 5 seed and pittsburgh the 6.

Common games means against the same opponents, right? Lol, even being a Steelers fan, how can I not root for the Texans to finally make the playoffs? It'd be like rooting for my son to beat the retarded kid in the 100 yard dash.

yeah, i was kind of a texans fan when they were first brought into the league (mainly because i liked playing through madden's franchise mode with them) so...yeah. only existing team to never make the playoffs, or even notch a winning record.

So you haven't noticed how unstoppable San Diego has been for the past.... 10 weeks? They are playing much better. The Ravens were playing better at that time.

WHO DAT? lolsaints.

Giants blown out. Steelers win... heard it was a really hard fought game.

Just a note: Jerome Harrison is looking pretty good right now.

Man that was a close game. Ravens could have had it without shooting themselves in the foot with penalties and dropped balls.

This win puts Pittsburgh in much more favorable position to make the playoffs with JAX and MIA losing, and hopefully NYJ and DEN as well. However, another unlikely contender has surged into view, and could possibly be the one team to ruin it for Pittsburgh -- the Texans. Now, even if Pittsburgh wins next week, Houston MUST lose or tie to stay below them. I'm encouraged that they have to go to New England next week, but I need the Pats to still play despite clinching their division. Never thought I'd be wishing the Pats to win a game ever, but...

Also nice leg on Janikowski. Left footer just like me :D

Baltimore Ravens... the most undisciplined team in the NFL. First the Green Bay game, now this. I have never seen a team want to lose so badly in my life. Whenever I see a Ravens big play, I have come to expect penalties...

Good job Washington, Mason, Suggs, and Ngata making just ridiculous plays.

Still looks like we will make the playoffs, but still. This team can be dangerous if they cut out the stupid penalties (and in Mason's case, pulling a Braylon Edwards).

Last Note: Did anyone notice how after each stupid penalty / play, the Ravens players would just laugh? I was stunned at how much the team just did not care. Ngata laughing after decking a guy after the play was over, and Mason not even trying to make the catch and then just laughing all the way back to the line of scrimmage. It won't be very funny when you make the same stupid mistakes against Oakland and miss the playoffs, will it?

At least Ray Rice looked amazing and Foxworth had another good game.

The Colts are ran by spineless cowards.

lol spineless cowards

The colts have been down this road before. They have a great quarterback in Peyton Manning and a defense that gets the job done. In short, they have a good team. So why risk messing that up by saying "LOL 16-0 HERE WE CUM". What if Peyton gets injured? I mean clearly Painter can't lead the team to a super bowl like Peyton can. They aren't cowards, they are careful and imo making the right move.

yeah, if the 07 pats hadn't already been down this road before, i'd say the colts would have been more inclined to go for 16-0.

i only got to watch parts of the game since i have RedZone but i saw that ravens red zone attempt...from a dropped wide open pass to a penalty or two and a sack and punt...man. steelers lucked out on that one. ziggy hood looks pretty good, and that makes me happy. about time we have some young depth at DL.

i think it's kind of ridiculous that the steelers find themselves in a position to make the playoffs now after losing soooooo many frustratingly close games (some to bad teams). i wouldn't be all that upset if the texans were to make it.

anyway i'm pretty sure that the steelers would need to win and pray that both the jets and texans lose. they play cincinnati and new england so it's possible, but i'm not holding my breath. there's no way we can beat the ravens in a tiebreaker and we have the broncos by virtue of the head to head win so...yeah.

Jets beat the Colts, and every team we needed to lose lost.

Life is good.

Now, all we have to do to make playoffs is beat Cincy. No easy feat, but at least all we have to worry about is our own team.
