The Everything NHL Thread

The Canucks are definitely a great team this year. (the following is probably a restatement of what others have said before) They've really boosted their defense, which was somewhat... lacking before, but adding guys over the years like Ehrhoff, Ballard, and Hamhuis give them that depth they were lacking before with basically only Salo and Bieksa. Edler's really rounding into form as well. Offense with the Canucks wasn't a problem since the Sedins had their breakout year, but now they're getting some scoring depth from Samuelsson, etc. One big change to me is the fact that there's FINALLY a reliable backup in Cory Schneider. Luongo doesn't have to play 70+ games anymore, Schneider can easily play 20-25 and the Canucks still have a chance to win those games. Luongo won't suffer from fatigue, and if he gets on a bad streak, you have someone to fall back on.

ahahahahaha that is the greatest thing I've seen in a long time

I was sitting there watching the game with my girlfriend, and I literally turned to her and said, "Don't worry, he'll choke" RIGHT as he took the puck at center ice. Best part is Enroth looking around as the realization of what just happened sets in.

Yes, heard.

Hopefully those are just baby steps leading to greater tournaments... because Im pretty confident France and Italy aren't anything close to being in the same league.

I never saw this thread before. I'm a Canuck guy, (obviously 'cause I live around Vancouver) Luongo's starting to get his game back up after the October slump :) Which is great, since I have him and Erhoff in my fantasy pool.

It's funny how a lot of Leaf fans started saying that Toronto would win the Stanley cup after they had a good first few games. Only a leaf fan . . .

I also like Montreal, which is where my Dad moved here from. Canucks then Habs I like, and then (sorry if it offends you) Oilers & Leafs I dislike.

Sabres finally win first home game, take 7 out of the last 8 points, Miller is back. Dare I say the Sabres are back on track?

L10 0-9-1

That said, still a terrible firing. I felt a little better about it after how mercilessly the Rangers commentators mocked that decision during the NYR/PIT game last night but seriously what an awful idea. If you give the guy a shitty team it is going to get shitty results. What needs to be replaced there is the GM, and I'm sure he's plenty aware of that and deflecting blame by removing the coach himself instead. While top to bottom they're not exactly an elite team, they played tough hockey every night under Gordon and surprised a lot of teams. Maybe I'll be wrong and they know something I don't, but I can't imagine the team gets better with this move.

Also maybe the Sabres are turning it around. I'd kind of figured with Tyler "Turnover" Myers' shitty year they were doomed to chill with Toronto, but things sure seem to be looking up there. If the Sabres could find a way to sneak into the top 8(and also maybe the Devils) of the East I'd really like the 16 playoff teams as of today - good to see some of the franchises doing well this year.

Top 8 in each conference, for reference: Washington, Philadelphia, Montreal, NY Rangers, Pittsburgh, Boston, Ottawa, Tampa Bay; Los Angeles, Detroit, Vancouver, Anaheim, St Louis, San Jose, Chicago, Colorado

I honestly don't understand why Quebec wants their own international team. It might just be me being an ignorant anglophone, but they are part of Canada.

There is a feeling of belonging to a 'Québec nation' that you may believe doesn't exist, but is very much there for most Québécois. When polled, most people in Québec identify themselves as 'Québécois' before 'Canadien', something unseen in the rest of Canada to my knowledge. There's always been a desire for more autonomy for the province and as you know, some even push it as far as feeling Québec should simply secede.

The predecent exists, Scotland and Wales field national teams in many sports, the maoris have their own rugby team, there is push for the Catalan national soccer team to be allowed to play in the Euro Cup, etc.

R.I.P. Pat Burns. Great man and coach. Fought bravely with his battle with cancer. Definitely will be remembered.

lol just watching him deke everyone on the ice

Why Miller wasn't even dressed I don't know, I watched the game without the sound on, but thanks for losing us the game Lalime.

I only just realized this thread exists! I'm sort of a Buffalo fan, don't really pay attention that much but I definitely love the Sabres! I'm from Buffalo originally. A very disappointing year though, despite talented goalkeeping and coaching as always we can never seem to produce in terms of goals. =/ I will observe this thread with interest!

We definitely seem to have lost a step since last season, but I point to Miller playing hurt for the first 15 games or so. Recently, the fact that we have had to start about 6 AHL regulars has definitely hurt us as well, even though we're 5-4-1 in our last ten games. We dropped some close ones we might have won if we were a bit healthier, so I expect a big uptick in offense when we get guys like Stafford, Connolly, and even Neidermayer back.
