One of the raging topics this year (besides "Will the Jets wrest the title of 'Worst Team in the Eastern Conference' from the Senators?" and "Will 'Dustin Byfuglien is Fat' Jokes Ever Get Old?") is the issue of realignment, so I thought it would be interesting to see what Smogon thought of the issue. My idea is this:
- expand to 32 teams (one in Quebec City, one in an American city. For the sake of the argument, let's go with Seattle or Houston).
- format consisting of two conferences with two divisions of eight teams each
- each team plays against each team in their division six times, each of the teams in the other division in their conference three times, and each team in the opposing conference once (for a total of 82 games)
- top two teams from each division are guaranteed a playoff spot. Next four teams with best records grab last four spots.
My proposed divisions:
Prince of Wales/Eastern Conference
Patrick Division:
- Boston
- Montreal
- NY Rangers
- NY Islanders
- Washington
- Carolina
- Tampa Bay
- Florida
Adams Division
- Pittsburgh
- Philadelphia
- Quebec
- Ottawa
- Toronto
- Columbus
- Buffalo
- New Jersey
Campbell/Western Conference
Norris Division
- Detroit
- Nashville
- Chicago
- St. Louis
- Minnesota
- Winnepeg
- Dallas
- Colorado/Houston
Smythe Division
- Edmonton
- Calgary
- Vancouver
- Seattle/Colorado
- Anaheim
- Los Angeles
- San Jose
- Phoenix
Under this system, no team has to travel more than two time zones for intra-conference games (with the exception of Detroit). Only the Smythe Division (and Detroit and Colorado) has to play intra-divisional games outside their time zone, and the only divisional rivalry that would necessitate travel of two time zones would be Detroit-Colorado*. Playoffs would remain relatively the same, and there would be no ugly arguments such as might occur with other formats with unequal divisions.
* in the event of a Seattle expansion.
