The Everything NHL Thread

Hahahahahaha, out of two games, Theodore let in 8 goals. Who's on a hot streak, now?

Detroit's taking the series, and that's more than enough proof.

Sorry, but how does winning 2 games AT HOME give any strong indication they will win the series? If you recall, they also won the first two games of the opening round, before losing the next two in Nashville...

While I don't think that 2 home wins will ever determine the winner of the series (they play a best of seven for a reason), Detroit looked extremely solid today and didn't let the Avs back in like they did in game one. Hopefully the momentum carries over to game 3 in Colorado. So who would have guess Johan Franzen was going to be leading all goal scorers in the playoffs? Certainly not me... I guess I should officially apologize to the guy considering I've always thought he sucked.

...and by using your example, Nashville lost anyway. Your example is moot.

Home or not, look at who's playing solid and who's struggling to set up. Detroit has figured out Colorado's style, and the statistics show. Just look at today: Colorado was restricted to a handful of shots.

Colorado's also missing some key players, especially Peter, and the little things like that add up.

I have strong reasons to doubt Jagr's intelligence. Knowing he will be hated in Pitsburgh for demanding a trade after building a dynasty, he said yesterday that 'Crosby and Malkin are not at the level that Mario and I were', or something to that nature.

Until Crosby can win the scoring championship by a margin of 50 points over the 2nd guy, I will tend to agree with what Jagr said.

Oh, I fully agree with Jagr. I just don't know how wise it is to say that when entering a play-off series. Reminds me somewhat of the American team supposedly placing a Canadian flag on the doorstep of their dressing room in the 02 Salt Lake City Olympic Hockey finals, and stomping on it while going out. All it did was motivate the Canadians.

Crosby really is all that the news makes him out to be, but has anybody else noticed something? If Crosby does a mildly difficult deke, it makes the headline news, but if somebody else does a fancy trick, it's overshadowed? I don't like how the NHL posterboy gets extreme praise when other people deserve the spotlight every now and then.

I'll probably track it down later, but there's a nice joke article on theonion about a night when a whole bunch of players had three point games, and there are a couple line by bettman emphasizing that unlike Sidney Crosby, the other players who did the exact same thing are NOT saving the NHL. I really dislike the Penguins and it has nothing to do with the team - partially because I find they have a really annoying fanbase and partially because i find it incredibly obnoxious how the hockey media inserts on shoving Crosby = Jesus at me.

That said, rooting for him in this series since with Anaheim out the Rangers are my least favorite team available(which is funny since I had three of my least favorite Rangers on my fantasy team), but it's good to see things like Jagr leisurely gliding across the ice since it's probably indicative that they will not get passed this round.

As far as the Red Wings/Avalanche series... "you're not in trouble unless you lose on home ice" gets thrown around a bit and that is probably the deal here, but with that said the Avs need to win all of their home games and then steal one of two games at the Joe, where the Wings are yet to lose in the playoffs this year. I'm not sure I would have predicted Colorado knowing that Forsberg is out because I do not feel that they are a better team than Detroit without him and with five games to go they're down to 2 games they can "steal" rather than 4 and Forsberg being unavailable(especially in game 1) might have turned the tide. Either way, this series is far from over but it's hard to overlook how mediocre Theodore has looked in the first two games considering he was the early front runner for playoff MVP by a lot of media outlets. That Nashville line is pretty silly though considering they won the series, Stall, lol.

Regardless, all of these series are far from over. Detroit, Dallas, Philly, and Pittsburgh got enough wins to have essential home ice for the remainder of their series, but that hardly determines the winner.

Sources say Theodore's starting in Game 3. I truly believe that, if that is the truth, Detroit has taken the series. Theodore's lackluster now.

I like this statistic:
"Dallas has looked right at home on the road in the 2008 playoffs. For the second consecutive series, the Stars nabbed a 2-0 lead behind two wins on the road. That has only happened three other times in NHL history. Here's how the others fared"

Mighty Ducks lost the Stanley Cup, North Stars lost the Stanley Cup, and the Maple Leafs won it twice. Even if we lose, making the finals would be really exciting :)

Anyone else think Fleury deserves to get jumped on by opposing goons? This is the second series in a row where he has jabbed opposing players between the legs to start a scrum in a game that's over.

edit - in case you missed it, as the seconds ticked off the clock in Sunday's win, Fleury raised his stick quickly between the legs of Avery, who was in front of the Penguin net. Avery turned around to face Fleury, and was promptly jumped by Laraque and Gill. Am I the only one seeing the obvious problem there?

Um, considering Avery gave Fleury a nice spear in the stomach, I'd say he got what was coming to him.

Well yea, Avery definitely gave him a little jab at the end but in my opinion Fleury really should not let Avery get into his head like that. That and the fact that goalies take hits like that routinely means that Fleury really should not have went as far as he did. Im not saying that Avery was right, just that Fleury should really control himself better. Especially with a 2-0 lead in a series. Something like that can only motivate the opposing team.

Anyways I'm going to the Ranger game tomorrow, should be a good one at the garden. Looking forward to seeing some desperation from my Rangers

I'm pretty sure when the other player in question is Sean Avery I'm not too worried about letting anyone 'get in my head' to 'motivate the other team' since if anyone is going to 'go too far' it is him every single time.

Um, considering Avery gave Fleury a nice spear in the stomach, I'd say he got what was coming to him.
Um, considering Emery got 5 games for smacking a player that had just bowled him over, I'd say Fleury deserves a game or two.

Avery has highsticked Crosby uncalled at least three times now that has been pointed out by the Versus staff, should we give him a game or two?

How about for the stick waving shit, should that be a game or two as well?

Hell, Roy did this shit to Holmstrom/Dino pretty much every time they were in front of the net in a lot of the old Detroit/Colorado games, did he get suspended?

It's playoff hockey, deal with it. There's bullshit that doesn't get called every year or at the very least is under punished and this is so incredibly trivial that I can't believe you're even seriously whining about it.

Meh, it's not so much the fact that Fleury did it, but that the Penguins enforcers got involved before Avery even retaliated. It just seems like they were trying to get an opportunity for Laraque and Gill to beat on him. Fleury happens to provoke him just as the 2 goons are on the ice with seconds left. and they happen to be right there so they can jump on Avery before he does any form of retaliation whatsoever.

I guess my main point is that if they're going to play that way, fine. But don't come whining if Crosby gets 'interfered with' or takes an extra hit here or there.

Except you have the tactics of it completely backwards, the goons are out there defensively, it's the end of the game, the Pens have a 2-0 series lead and momentum, there's nothing the Rangers can gain from the situation except by creating a scrum so the goons are on the ice to make sure nothing happens. There is nothing to gain when you already have a 2-0 series lead by creating that type of situation, you are mislabeling the instigators.

I'm honestly not trying to purposely be thick or anything, nor am I biased against the Penguins, so maybe I'm just missing something here.

From what I saw:

*Fleury, unprovoked, took a shot a Avery post-game
*Avery turned to face Fleury
*Before Avery did a single thing, he was jumped by Gill and Laraque, who just so happened to be right by the area

To me, in honestly looks like the Penguins planned to have an 'excuse' to get a few shots in on Avery. Again, if I'm way out in left field here, I would really appreciate someone pointing out where I'm wrong. I happen to have lots of respect for the Penguins, specifically Fleury, Laraque, and Crosby. I also hate Avery very much, so I'm not trying to defend him.

lol Avery getting shots unprovocked.

He deserves every stick and punch in the face he gets and more.

It goes beyond what he's done in the game so far, but what he's done in the serie so far and the entire season to everyone so far.

on a side note : Price cost the Habs 2 games in a row. Give me Huet back. The Flyers do not deserve to make it to the next round.
