The Everything NHL Thread

Also on the awards, I'd have voted Yzerman for 2nd on mine for best GM but I can't be mad about that snub since Boston's GM didn't win it -- I mean, seriously, look at that cup-winning roster and how many players were acquired via trades and the draft the past couple of years. I know it's a one year award(and acquisitions like Horton are probably "enough" anyway), but come on... he deserves it.

I don't agree with Lidstrom getting the Norris either (though he was a lot better defensively this year than his plus minus would indicate, it was rarely his side of the ice that had issues) given the year some other defenseman had (I still would have given it to Vish and Weber had an awfully strong year too)...

Otherwise, hilarious the Ted Lindsay trophy was freaking broken. Stay classy, NHL.

once I saw Lidstrom won Norris I stopped caring about the rest

I now respect the NHL awards at about the same level I respect the Pro Bowl selections

Nothing against Lidstrom but I thought Weber should have won too. The leading scorer for Nashville had 2 more points than Weber. He doesnt much talent around him as Lidstrom.

Just read his mentality on he voted for the Norris. One of the reasons why I dont take sports awards seriously.

Philly has been busy today.

Flyers traded top goal scorer Jeff Carter to the Blue Jackets for forward Jake Voracek and the club's first- and third-round picks.

The Flyers dealt Richards to L.A. for forwards Brayden Schenn and Wayne Simmonds, and a second-round pick in the 2012 draft.

According to a report, the Flyers have signed Ilya Bryzgalov to a nine-year, $51 million deal

Flames have also asked Regehr to wave his no trade clause to go to Buffalo.

Also, the Winnipeg Roughriders (if I say it enough it will happen) have hired Claude Noel (Manitoba Moose Coach) to be their Coach.

My opinion on all of these: the Carter trade seems bad for the Flyers and good for the Blue Jackets. The Richards trade seems good for both teams. The Bryzgalov signing is hilarious from a Winnipeg fan's perspective (will explain), and I'm not sure about trading Regehr. I don't like the Noel signing, but Manitoba has been good with Coaches in the past.

Carter trade seems like they're relying on the draft pick, so maybe they have someone in mind they want for the future.

Brayden Schenn is going to be a great player, so that's the reason I like that trade for the Flyers. The Kings are now going to have a legitimate first line, so that should be fun to watch now that Quick actually has some offensive talent.

Bryzgalov is not a character guy. He wanted to go to the KHL to be around Russians, he talks crap about Winnipeg after only being here once or twice. I'm glad he didn't come here and I'm glad he can go to Philly, where fans throw snowballs at Santa and are proud of it.

Noel to me seems like a guy who settles for average, and I'm basing this from what I saw when he coached the Moose. Hope I'm wrong and he's a mastermind at producing young talent.

Carter trade: I thought it was fair for both sides. Columbus finally sheds the Nashombus Nash Jackets label and finds a complementary center for Nash, who can score. Philly clears cap space, and invests in a good young player in Voracek. At 21, he's looking to be a solid player.

Richards trade: I can't comment on Simmonds because I"m not exactly sure how legit he is (he seems like a solid player). However, Schenn was projected to be a number #2 center, and essentially what Mike Richards is right now. I don't understand why they'd trade away a proven centerman, who was their heart and soul, who led them to the finals two years ago, for an unproven center, and a winger.

These are rumours only, but it seems that there's more to it than their performance. Carter was reportedly boning Hartnell's wife. Also, Richards and Carter were known to be heavy partiers, so there's that.

Clearing cap space for Bryzgalov was crucial, but I don't see why they had to trade away Richards, when clearing Carter would have essentially done it. Holmgren probably has something else in mind that I'm not seeing.

Philadephia is going to be looking for a 3rd line centerman now.

LA Kings just told the rest of Pacific Division to fuck off. A 1-2 punch in Kopitar and Richards. Exciting team to watch next year.

Edit: Not surprised Gillis won the Manager of the Year, although Nashville's GM in my opinion should have gotten it for making a playoff team with scrap metal and a piece of wood. Lidstrom's Norris was just "what" for me. Everything else was pretty much expected. Skinner's awkward speech made me squirm a bit.

And how exactly does having a team of "scrap metal and wood" make David Poile GM of the year? Yet another person who does not give Barry Trotz the credit he deserves =P

I heard on TSN that they're going to be bidding for Brad Richards.

Not to mention Dustin Brown as well. A line of Kopitar, Richards, and Brown with Drew Doughty on defense and Quick in goal. Very exciting team indeed.

You do best with what you're given. Poile can't spend to the cap hit because the team doesn't draw enough revenue (yet). I'm not saying that it's all on Poile that the team succeeded, but finding good combinations and chemistry through a bunch of scrappy forwards is commendable. Bringing in Sergei Kostistyn and Fisher proved to be shrewd moves and he's been a solid GM in my opinion.

Kings can't afford Brad Richards; they're gonna need to clear more cap as it is to get Doughty inked to a long-term deal while filling a roster of competent NHL players. That team is gonna be silly in about two years, but the end of Penner and Smyth's deals are killers right now and they really need to make one disappear. Kopitar/Richards/Brown/Doughty/Johnson/Greene/Bernier is such a fucking fantastic young core, once they can get some better value wingers they'll be contenders every year. They'll be hell to score on next year but their strong centers are only gonna have declining talent to pass to. I love Brown/Richards/Doughty on the same team... beautiful 2-way core and Kopitar is among the most underrated players offensively.

As far as the trades, I like the Philly side of the Carter trade, since I'm not Carter's #1 fan and Voracek alone should be similar value if he can develop into his projections, let alone what that #8 can get them. Don't like the idea of Nash-Carter-x, I know the idea of Nash with a competent center is awe-inspiring but they're both shooters; unless they can get a Hemsky/Tanguay type RW I'm not sure that's going to be the answer. I'd rather put Carter at RW and a playmaking center between them to distribute the puck, but Brassard may not be ready for that yet and Vermette isn't really the right playertype. Iirc both Carter and Nash are like top 5 in the league in sog, that's not gonna be able to continue if they're linemates.

Like LA's side of the Richards deal because they got the best player. Change of scenery will be good for him, but he's a leader and someone who could be a Selke winner in the future... seems like an awfully valuable player to move for an unproven but potentially valuable prospect and a RW thats very similar to what they got in the Voracek deal. Kings lucked out -- I'd take Richards and 3m of cap space over Kovalchuk on a defensively built team like that one any day. I don't think Philly is better now than a month ago, and I think the best Philly team does the Carter trade and then signs Vokoun for 2m a year less instead of Bryz and continues to develop Bob for the future. Voracek, Schenn, and that #8 pick have great upside, though. Just seems like some unnecessary risks.

Interesting to many of these teams to have the cap jump almost 5m - bet the Hawks wish that happened a year sooner, eh?

Sorry you misunderstood my post. Philly is going to go for Brad Richards. I haven't heard anything about the Kings.

They can afford him even less with 6m to cover Leino, Simmonds, Voracek, and possibly Carcillo. Even if they move Versteeg (and then need another forward to replace him) they're not even close to Richards money.

The only way Philly gets Richards is if they move Versteeg and another big contract like Hartnell or Meszaros. They already have a few guys they need to sign with not all that much space, and Richards is going to get big money this year.

Yea the only thing we know is that they are going to be called the Jets (thank god) and possibly release the information later today. I'm going to the MTS center to watch the draft and hopefully I'll find out then.

GO JETS GO GO JETS GO

EDIT: It could be either Winnipeg/Manitoba.

I enjoy that Toronto essentially traded Kaberle for Liles...

I'm kind of shocked that LA apparently have multiple suitors for Ryan Smyth's terrible contract. Mind-blowing, really.

Can the Bruins get any nastier on D? *shudder*

Troy Brouwer for the Caps' 1st round pick...

wow...

Even bigger jaw dropper.

Setoguchi+Prospect to the Wild for Brett Burns and some draft picks...

Great, the Wings killer moves closer to Detroit...

Wild get an upgrade on offense, but gut their defense. Sharks improve their d-corps significantly and still has offensive options. I'd give the Sharks a win on this one.
