The Next Best Thing v2 - Latios

450.png

Garchomp @ Life Orb
8 Atk / 252 SpAtk / 248 Spe, Naïve
- Draco Meteor
- Fire Blast
- Earthquake
- Outrage / Swords Dance

Somebody had to post this. Standard, awesome ChainChomp, lures physical walls like nothing else. Draco Meteor is the main move and does serious damage to most anything non-Steel and non-blob. Fire Blast hits Steels. Earthquake hits Heatran and is a nice reliable attack. For the last slot, Outrage is the main option, giving you a powerful sweepy move to clean up with once physical walls and Steels are eliminated; Swords Dance is also possible to be a dick to stall teams and prevent them from playing around DM's SAtk drop.

The problem with this set in the current meta is that physical walls aren't garchomp's problem; the huge number of things that outspeed it are. As such, beating physical walls doesn't help too much.

Idk if there's an analysis, but to circumvent this a sub sd set could work well

Garchomp (F) @ Leftovers
Trait: Rough Skin
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 Speed OR 188 HP / 68 Atk / 252 Spd
Jolly Nature (+Spd, -SAtk)
- Swords Dance
- Earthquake / Dragon Claw
- Substitute
- Dragon Tail / Roar

Sub - Roar / Dragon Tail Garchomp looks very strange, but it actually allows you to beat opposing phazers such as Hippowdon and Skarmory. Garchomp is pretty fast, so nothing can outphaze except Roar Latias, which would promptly get destroyed by Dragon Claw. Immunity to Sandstorm means that Garchomp can be kept alive and kickin even when using Substitute. This set can be especially effective with hazards, Garchomp will act as a fast shuffler and his mono-coverage will be made up for by the hazards put down by his team mates. A bulkier spread can be used with 188 HP to assure Garchomp can safely set up 101 HP Substitutes in front of Chansey and Blissey. You can use Dragon Tail instead of Roar to gain access to EQ to smash other Steel-types, but you can miss with Dragon Tail (but then your phazing move vs Skarmory does damage). Watch out Hippowdon and Skarmory.

Garchomp (M) @ Yache Berry
Trait: Rough Skin
EVs: 40 HP / 216 Atk / 252 Spd
Jolly Nature (+Spd, -SAtk)
- Swords Dance
- Dragon Rush
- Earthquake
- Fire Fang

Garchomp is probably the Dragon type that can get away with using Dragon Rush; since Earthquake and Fire Fang gets good coverage, Dragon Rush will act as a move you use only when needed, like for Rotom-W. 40 HP allows you to take +2 Breloom or Scizor's priority attacks after rocks, as well as LO Keldeo Hydro Pump after rocks.

Some of these sets aren't all that creative...SubSD?? The mixed set might be able to work, but it's kinda outclassed by Mence imo due to the latter's higher SpAtt. Why the hell would you use Dragon Rush when you can get a 100% accurate attack for only 20 less BP? Really digging that Sub Phazer set. That's creativity.
Anyway, this is an actually creative Chomp set. Didn't invent this though.

Fast Phazer:
Garchomp @ Leftovers
252 HP/ 4 Def/ 252 Spe
Timid Nature (+Spe, -SpAtt)
-Rest
-Sleep Talk
-Dragon Tail
-Roar/Swords Dance

The strategy for this guy is simple. Get him in, get him to sleep, and start Phazing. Obviously requires an SR user and a Spiker to support. Since Sleep Talk has zero priority, this Garchomp has a 2/3 chance of phazing slow opponents before they can even move. Swords Dance can be used to power up the Dragon Tales, but I prefer double phazing for a better chance of hitting the phazing move. Can be stopped by Keldeo, Alakazam, Lati@s, Starmie, Mamoswine and Scarfers but...

252 Atk Terrakion Close Combat vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Garchomp: 204-241 (48.57 - 57.38%) -- 94.53% chance to 2HKO
4 SpA Latias Dragon Pulse vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Garchomp: 242-288 (57.61 - 68.57%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Can handle Terrakion shakily, also has enough bulk to survive weak Dragon attacks.
Also none of these mons can switch in or they will get hit for hazards plus maybe Dragon Tail damage and get forced out, so they have to get lucky and switch in.

Anyways, the set isn't perfect, but it's fun to play with and something that only Garchomp can do. You can run less speed and more physical bulk, but then you lose to Landorus and all the base 100s.

Garchomp@Life Orb
Trait: Rough Skin
EVs: 252 Spd/252 Atk/4 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Swords Dance
- Rock Slide
- Dragon Claw
- Earthquake
This set is aimed at beating out Garchomp's counters: flying types who get free switches in on earthquake and ice types who come in after a kill and go for ice shard.
With Rock Slide Garchomp beats out a lot of the flying types in the tier:
+1 252+ Atk Life Orb Garchomp Rock Slide vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Gyarados: 294-348 (74.8 - 88.54%) -- 93.75% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock(+1 due to intimidate, if moxie then outright OHKO)
252+ Atk Life Orb Garchomp Rock Slide vs. 248 HP / 84 Def Zapdos: 244-289 (63.7 - 75.45%) -- 6.25% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock(If at +2 already OHKO).

why not just use stone edge? and jolly is essential to outrun salamence and other base 100s

Garchomp is a pokemon that never really struggles to find a way in. The problems it has with being outsped are largely due to the way it's forced to lock itself into Outrage on most sets. Being able to abuse the free turns it does get with Draco Meteor makes a lot more sense to me than using Outrage and practically guaranteeing your own death. And physical walls are still very relevant to the meta - Lando-T and Hippo are very common, and the likes of Skarm, Gliscor and Forry are still floating around.

I like Pillsbury's set as well, Dragon Tail is a criminally underused move. Faces major competition from Dragonite though.

Garchomp @ Leftovers
EVs: 188 HP / 46 Atk / 196 Def / 80 Spe
Jolly Nature
-Substitute
-Stealth Rock
-Dragon Tail
-Earthquake

Here is Bulky scouter Garchomp. Now from glance the EVs might seems unorthdox, but with 80 Speed Evs and a Jolly Nature you outspeed Positive Speed Base 80 Pokemon and below and 220 Neutral Speed Haxorus. The main goal of this Garchomp is to set up Stealth Rock on a Pokemon that can't touch him and Substitute as well. With 188 HP you assure Garchomp can safely set up 101 HP Substitutes and recover the damage with Leftovers. With just 46 ATK all versions of Jirachi are 2HKO and Magnezone is out of the picture.

Here are some Damage calculations to show its defensive power

252 Atk Garchomp Outrage vs. 188 HP / 196 Def Garchomp: 83.66 - 98.51%
252 SpA Life Orb Keldeo Hydro Pump vs. 188 HP / 0 SpD Garchomp: 71.78 - 84.9%
252+ Atk Gyarados Ice Fang vs. 188 HP / 196 Def Garchomp: 65.34 - 77.22%
252 Atk Choice Band Terrakion Close Combat vs. 188 HP / 196 Def Garchomp: 62.37 - 73.51%
52 Atk Choice Band Technician Breloom Bullet Seed (3 hits) vs. 188 HP / 196 Def Garchomp: 57.92 - 69.05%

Garchomp is already ''Big''. I don't think there is any good set for garchomp that hasn't been used he's pretty straight forward. There are pokemon in OU that are lesser used and maybe need a break through set. Examples: Infernape, Hydreigon, Jolteon, Espeon, Gatrodon etc..

Well, Infernape, Hydreigon, and Espeon have already been through the project once before.

I think something to think about for further projects are the options available to the Pokemon. A largely untapped movepool, for example, would be great for the project. The Kyu-B project, par example, didn't see any really brand new sets because Kyu-B is already using most of its useful moves on standard sets.

Hey bro. I posted this exact set on the first page

What counters chomp? Choiced dragons, Steel types who sponge outrage, walls. Chomp DOES have a way to get around them, but it's not very creative...

Garchomp @ Leftovers/ Life Orb/ Salac Berry
Trait: Rough Skin
EVs: 252 Spd / 4 SAtk / 252 Atk
Hasty Nature
- Substitute
- Fire Blast
- Outrage/ Dragon Claw
- Earthquake

Substitute on the switch to lure in chomp's counters, then nail them with the appropriate move. Skarmory and Bronzong are dented by Fire Blast, faster dragons are food for Outrage or Dragon Claw, you get a free hit on priority users.

This set doesn't really beat chomp's counters, but it has a niche and I believe it deserves a mention:

Garchomp @ Leftovers/ Rocky Helmet
Trait: Rough Skin
EVs: 240 HP / 64 Spd / 204 Def
Timid Nature
- Protect/ Substitute
- Fire Blast
- Toxic
- Earthquake

Taking a page from DPP Flygon's book, this Garchomp aims to harass and Toxic stall multitudes of targets. Along with sand and rough skin, and maybe rocky helmet, enemies will be worn down VERY quickly. Fire Bast and Earthquake allow it to hit those immune to Toxic. Protect to build sand/ Toxic damage, though Sub allows you to act as a lure for hippowdon and landorus-t. Rocky helmet allows it to stack residual damage, but it likes recovery. A more offensive set can be used, but then Chomp might as well be a full attacker.

I'm not sure which one of these is more viable, could you tell me?

~ Substitute
~ Dragon Tail

~ Earthquake
252 HP / 196 Def / 60 Spe Jolly @ Leftovers
Use this in sand. Setup sub on something you scare away, then either use dragon tail for phazing the next mon or use protect to scout and rack up sandstorm damage. Earthquake kos several threats and is a great stab to have.

Garchomp @ Life Orb
EVs: 8 HP / 248 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Swords Dance
- Outrage
- Earthquake
- Aqua Tail
This set is meant to be used on rain teams to do a few things. It's an incredible wall-breaker, it's great at beating weather-starters, and it performs superbly as part of a dual offensive core (coupled with something like subsalac terra). A standard SD set, with two important changes. First, instead of an item such as Lum or lefties, this chomp uses LO for sheer power. Second, Aqua Tail > fire fang or substitute. In conjunction with rain, this garchomp literally has 0 counters. Common switch-ins, such as landorus-t, skarmory, and hippowdon, all are easily 2HKOed or better after a SD:
+2 252 Atk Life Orb Garchomp Aqua Tail vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Skarmory in rain: 218-257 (65.26 - 76.94%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
+1 252 Atk Life Orb Garchomp Aqua Tail vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Landorus-T in rain: 442-523 (115.7 - 136.91%) -- guaranteed OHKO
+2 252 Atk Life Orb Garchomp Aqua Tail vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Hippowdon: 328-387 (78.09 - 92.14%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
Notice that of these, the only one who can actually do something back to garchomp is landy-t, who conveniently is OHKOed. Hippo and skarm can only phaze chomp out, leaving them severely weakened and ready for a sweep by the second part of the offensive core.

One other super cool application of this set is that it can just wreck with tailwind support. Because it has 3 attacks and LO, it doesn't need set-up to sweep through more offensive teams, which are usually problematic with their faster mons. And it jsut so happens that this chomp, which is meant to be used on rain, happens to pair great with tornadus, the premier user of tailwind in OU both synergy-wise and in terms of match-up with common mons (for example, their scarf terra out vs torny? priority tailwind, then SD on their locked SE and sweep). Obviously tailwind support is not necessary at all for this set, it just adds a whole other dimension.

I can attest to the success of SD + Aqua Tail Garchomp in rain, as I've been using it a lot recently (albeit with Yache Berry). It's amazing how much utility the move has, and because it gets a pseudo STAB boost you don't have to lock yourself into Outrage to hit things like Air Balloon Heatran / Gengar / Thundurus-T etc. Definitely going to vote for Kidogo's set, out of all these posted here it has the most useful application in the metagame by far, and is the only one I'd ever personally consider using. However, since Aqua Tail deals with all the main physical walls in the metagame that aren't hit hard by +2 Earthquake, would you consider using Dragon Claw instead of Outrage, or at least slashing it in? I don't think you miss out on any KOs (will check that later), but it's nice to not be locked into Outrage as it opens you up to being revenge killed.

is sd + aqua tail seriously not on-site i thought everyone used that

oh well guess i'm voting for kidogo since his set has 0 counters

Garchomp@Expert Belt
Evs: 252 Atk / 4 SAtk / 252 Spe
Naive nature
-Outrage
-Earthquake
-Fire Blast
-HP Ice
Lure Chomp. While doing most of things your typical Garchomp does, it is designed to lure certain pokemon and cripple them for the rest of the match. Seeing an Earthquake from him with no Life Orb recoil and Leftovers recovery, 96.53% of people will assume it's either choiced or the SD Yache Berry variant so they're most likely to send out their physical wall or some resist. For example Landorus-T takes about 80% from HP Ice after SR, becoming almost useless for the rest of the match. Now pair him with things like Breloom, Terrakion and Lucario(Pokemon who enjoy the removal of things like Skarmory, Gliscor, Landorus-T, Forretress etc) and you have a great lure to get rid of their counters.
You can always invest in Special Attack more to be able to even 2HKO things like physically defensive Hippowdon but the main beauty of this set is the fact that it still has its physical power to maximum and will never be useless after doing its job.

Not outclassed by Latios / Hydreigon / Mence because this guy isn't weak to Pursuit or U-turn, is immune to Sandstorm, resists Stealth Rock, outspeeds base 101's, can handle Jirachi and Heatran easily unlike Latios, and has a lot more surprise factor on its side.

I used this set on a former team of mine and absolutely loved it. Very effective in luring in things such as Skarmory and Ferrothorn and destroying them with Fire Blast. Great for both more balanced teams and offensive teams that could have some trouble getting past them. I recommend max Speed though to speed tie with other Garchomp. I used Stealth Rock in the last slot as I didn't have any room on the rest of my team for it and using Stealth Rock on Chomp usually lured my opponent into thinking I was using a defensive set and didn't expect Fire Blast. Dragon Tail is also an option on this set since it forces lots of switches as opponents try to sponge Draco Meteors

I dont get exactly what mixchomp do that standard physical chomp cant do already.
4- SpA Life Orb Garchomp Fire Blast vs. 252 HP / 168 SpD Ferrothorn: 260-307 (73.86 - 87.21%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
4- SpA Life Orb Garchomp Fire Blast vs. 224 HP / 32 SpD Skarmory: 216-255 (66.05 - 77.98%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
The sp atk evs are just wasted. You dont need anything other than 4 sp atk and a life orb to beat steels. And if you want to break through landorus-t and hippowdon just use swords dance.
+1 252 Atk Life Orb Garchomp Outrage vs. 200 HP / 244 Def Landorus-T: 325-383 (88.07 - 103.79%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock
+2 252 Atk Life Orb Garchomp Outrage vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Hippowdon: 328-386 (78.09 - 91.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
Garchomp has never had any troubles breaking through walls. Its problems in this gen are the several pokemon that can outspeed it such as terrakion, keldeo, starmie among others. This is why i feel sets that focus on using substitute and even salac berry are going to be more useful for it.

How is an OHKO on the Steels you mentioned not better than a 2HKO? And if you want to break through Hippowdon / bulky Lando, sure, use Swords Dance and Outrage, then get unavoidably revenge killed. Or just watch them switch to something faster on the Swords Dance and either force you out or kill you. If you have DM / Fire Blast then you don't have these problems - you get the kill, then you switch. I think that's enough justification for MixChomp.

Kidogo's set is cool too, tbh I thought Aqua Tail was already a primary slash on the SDer. Agreeing with darkblazer that Dragon Claw > Outrage is definitely a solid option for that set and should probably be slashed.
