Wii Virtual Console Guide

NA users just got the true Super Mario Bros 2 and Sin and Punishment, both Japan only, I recommend getting both, but they are at a premium price (600 for Mario 1200 for Sin and Punishment). I've heard S&P is amazing so I will download it and give everyone my impressions.

it has been a while since ive updated my precious thread, so i added the reviews for games i have downloaded since then:

super mario bros lost levels
castlevania 2
super metroid
f-zero X

enjoy motherfuckers!

Thanks for this, Steelicks, it's brilliant.

I didn't get Lylat Wars the first time round, so I'm enjoying it a lot at the minute. However, I am having a problem. Am I overlooking something obvious, or do I have to start the game over again every time I reset? I got to Venom and turned the game off. Came back later, and had to start from the first level, but there was still little stars next to the levels I'd completed. Help? :(

yeah you have to start over im afraid. n64 games do not have a save state feature, and with lylat wars, you have to start from the beginning every time. things like your level scores and medals are saved, but yeah, sorry dude

Castlevania fans are probably still scratching their heads over why exactly Konami created this one. It is such a different game to the original and the excellent third game, incorporating RPG elements and chatting with townspeople as well as the standard whip-wielding fun. At the time of its release, it was not well received.

This would be a game I normally could not recommend, however, when playing on the Wii Virtual Console, it suddenly becomes a lot better. Why? Because of the "resume play" feature (like save states in emulators), that allows you to continue from where you left off, instead of fumbling around with huge passwords. Overall, it is a long, enjoyable adventure game that should be tried out if you're looking for something a bit different.

So it isn't as bad as AVGN tells us? What about the ebil pop-up screen of doom?
And thanks, I really needed an intro to the Virtual Console. x) So far, I only downloaded Mario the Lost Levels (or the original 2) and......christ, is it hard. x_x The first Mario game I didn't feel like an idiot for dying all the time. xD

Thanks Steelicks, it's a bit pesky, but it's so much fun that I can overlook it.

At the minute, I've only got Lylat Wars and Kid Icarus, but shall be investing in Super Metroid (I loved this so much as a kid) and Super Castlevania (based mainly on your review, but I really liked the original GBA Castlevania.)

the angry nerd greatly exaggerated how bad the game is for the sake of comedy, i think. if i were playing this on an actual NES, i probably wouldnt enjoy it, since i would have to use passwords. but overall it is quite a lot of fun =)

Well, good to see you give it another chance!, is deserved.

I played it (and still own it, have the cartridge) on the NES. As a Castlevania fan... well i would say is one of these games not everyone can fully appreciate (like Zelda II was).

Is good to hear there are "saves", the passwords are way too old and there is no need to port everything exactly like it was if there is a way to improve it. There are other games that use this kind of feature as well?.

How much are Wii points worth?, i mean ...money?.

PS. Kid Icarus is a bitch.

I can't give you it in dollars, but they go at 2000pts for 15 pounds over here. It's pretty good.

EDIT: Wikipedia says they go for 20 dollars in the US. :)

PS. Kid Icarus is a bitch.

Lol, I know. I'm on the second boss. If I get one more fucking eggplant on my head, I'm gonna scream.

Mhmmm, that's what I noticed for most of his videos. x)

Alright, thanks, I'll check it out. I loved the original. :'D

okay!

added the good bubble bobble, the bad yoshis story, and the excellent super mario bros 3 and megaman 2

enjoy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i disagree with the negative view on yoshi story.
when i was 10, and didn't know how to speed through, that game was the shit to me =]. but i guess after playing it once it does get boring. i think its worth a one time play, or maybe just play it here and there, but it certainly shouldn't have that score IMO. and speeding through the game acting like a pro makes you feel like you just beat contra without a partner.

Alien Soldier is available in North America now... I'd recommend anyone who likes Contra or Gunstar Heroes try this; it's a really good action platformer that's almost entirely focused on boss battles.

Lol and i thought i didn't liked Pokemon Snap xD, 0/10 lol.

Anyway, i'm kinda mad now, i am in this moment using the Wii shop and i was looking for Megaman 1 & 2, but silly me didn't knew these were NOT in America :O. I got Paper Mario though, because i have never played it. And DKC 2 because my SNES cartridge won't save anymore :(.

Dude this is a pretty fucking awesome thread! I loved Vectorman, Sonic when I had the Genesis as a kid.

I do agree though that Streets of Rage (AKA Bare Knuckles [Japan] Original) and Revenge of Shinobi need to be mentioned.

They are pretty awesome games.

I didn't really like the sequels to the original Streets of Rage, the graphics sucked IMO. I also didn't really like Vectorman 2, it got, complicated, if you will, afterwards.

Pokemon Snap on the N64: 1/10.

Pokemon Snap on the Wii: 10/10.

There's nothing quite as entertaining as flooding a friend's Wii with retarded pictures of Meowth or Slowpoke, particularly ones edited in the Wii photo editing program!

That's honestly the only reason I got it, but the entertainment I've been getting from that alone has made the ten dollars (1,000 Wii points) worth it. It should at least get an okay score due to that!

(Also, I'm very happy I managed to stumble onto this list! It's a good way of knowing what VC games I want to buy besides the games I already owned at one point.)

ok, updated my precious guide with the decent but not great Donkey Kong Country 3, and the absolutely outstanding Harvest Moon

I agree, i really don't recommend this game, it's been reviewed so well but i really don't liked it back then, i doubt that would change. Just go for the first two!.

I read King of Fighters 94 is coming to the US VC, it's been out on Pal for a month (?) already. While not the best of the KOF games and maybe not everyones cup of tea i will get it.

EDIT: Yep King of Fighters '94 will be available this Monday along with Star Tropics (NES). Both are interesting games.

Why the fuck can I not find fucking Harvest Moon?

Europe only? Screw you Nintendo.

DAMN YOU!!! DAMN YOU NINTENDO OF AMERICA!?!?!!?

Seriously, download that game. Harvest moon is a must have... I only wish it is an American release so that I can friggen get that game.

Can I request reviews here? I just noticed that Romance of the Three Kingdoms is avaliable for Virtual Console download (SNES)... it'd be nice if I could get an idea if it is worth the ~$10 or so to download it. I'm somewhat of a fan of koei because of Dynasty Warriors... and I'd like to see how the RoTK series did.

Dragontamer, don't you know any Europeans who could send you Harvest Moon as a gift? Seems like the only way for you to get it.
