Windows 7

Nah I already have a PS2 controller I can use really. I just wanted wireless for PS2 emulators so I'd have no wires while playing PS2 games using PCSX2. I also have the 360 controller which I much prefer + wireless adapter for most games I'd want a gamepad for.

Even though this is off topic I'd just like to say how freakin' awesome Dolphin and PCSX2 are. They've helped me replay games long after I sold the consoles.

I wouldn't upgrade my XP to Vista if my life depended on it. Maybe I would to Windows 7.

I do not know about the newer versions, but Windows 7 through at least August (I cannot remember if the first betas had the problem, but it sure as hell has for a long time) has a HUGE problem with displaying pictures. Colors change, details disappear, and it lags between picture loading. If you F11, most of the problems go away, but still. So something to consider waiting for them to fix before getting this if you have problems with illegally or legally obtaining another picture manager.

I've been using Windows 7 since the beta was released and this problem has NEVER occured with me :/

Windows 7 is much better than XP. The taskbar improvements are worth upgrading for alone.

7 is absolutely excellent. Having been ridiculously displeased with Vista, I have to say that 7 is probably better than Vista in absolutely every way, and better than XP in many ways. The ability to snap programs to the taskbar so that they always show up in the same place, and having the taskbar double as a full quick launch is really pretty cool, among other things.

(release candidate fo sho)

I had downloaded the Windows 7 RC soon after it came out to the public onto my old desktop and I was very pleased with what I saw. Planning on installing 7 on my laptop sometime tonight.

I got a free upgrade to Windows 7 that came with my laptop. It'll be coming in the mail any day now.

I've used the beta a few times and it's magnificent. In all likelihood, the best OS on the market today.

Oh, that's how you get it? I was wondering...I also got the free upgrade.

If you ordered through Dell like I did, you have to register to receive your upgrade by January. You'll get the same trim level that you got on the laptop. I got Vista Ultimate, so my upgrade will be Windows 7 Ultimate.

The student discount for Canada and UK are up (for those who don't qualify through MSDNAA). $39.99 CAD and 30.00 GBP.

And definitely remember to check if you qualify through MSDNAA. There are a lot of Comp Sci students here and most schools have it for at least their Comp Sci department.

Microsoft continuing its bigotry; interesting!

Explain! I love corporate intrigue!

Is this about the advertisements in Poland? Because if so, I should tell you that *everyone* does it. We're supposed to feel sorry for Poland because of WW2, but as a nation they're extremely racist.

My school has MSDNAA but I don't see Win7 on it :/

Right, I was playing off of that, but really what the hell is this. $30 for Amuricans! $40 for Canadians (I guess they are nearly Amurican after all), and $45-$50 for the British (I mean we are supposedly friends with them, but secretly dislike them, better increase it). Even if it is supposed to be because of difficulty moving inventory, it should not be that hard to move inventory of the system you want the whole world to use.

It's just stupid pricing like everything else. $60 games are $70 here. $270 computer parts are $300. They better adjust soon because it's getting more and more ridiculous as our dollar goes higher and higher. And it's not hard to move inventory because most people are just using the download option ($13 for shipping for actual boxed product).

Email the Program Director who's listed under "Support".

I'll probably be getting the W7, but maybe after a stable version is released (this one is like the beta right) so that way, I can get the updated ones. Right now, I'm using XP which is pretty good except my graphics cards sucks ass.

Uh, this is a stable version. It has been stable for months. The beta was in January and a bit before that.

7 is Vista that works, even the beta one seemed better than Vista when I tried it.

However, why bother with any OS beginning with a "W" when you could just use Linux?

Because certain programs that I happen to like don't exist on Linux and I have found Linux alternatives wanting?

Depends. If you just do a straight upgrade, you shouldn't lose anything.

If you do a clean install, your old programs, user directories, and OS files will be moved to a folder called "Windows.old". If you're going this route (and you'll have to if your current OS isn't Vista, OR you're upgrading from 32-bit Vista to 64-bit 7), look into Windows Easy Transfer.

I used Linux for years before switching to Windows 7. First of all, Linux isn't great for laptops as it uses more battery life. No, powertop doesn't cut it. On both laptops I've owned I could NOT get hibernate to work perfectly (oh sure, it works occasionally, but can it work without screwing up wireless...?). Furthermore, I grew tired of the regressions. I remember upgrading from Ubuntu 8.10 to 9.04 killed support for WPA2 on my Intel wireless card (confirmed regression on launchpad). I don't have time for this nonsense, I just need my computer to work. Windows 7 with Emacs, GnuWin32 and Powershell does desktop UNIX better than Linux does :/

Also, as great as Wine is, it still doesn't do Photoshop perfectly. GIMP is awful.

One of my workstations now uses Windows 7 and so far it's great. I look forward to upgrading the one I have at home that uses Vista with it if it's not much of a hassle.
