Krookodile (Analysis)

A choice band set may be warranted, at least in the additional options category just for a powerful STAB Earthquake and an incredibly strong Pursuit for those teams who don't want to run Sand

It seems to me that a choice band set may work like a faster banded T-tar, but without the extra bulk, less attack and a STAB EQ. It may be outclassed in that regard except for actually outrunning stuff... assuming you'd use the same moves that are on the scarf set.

Then again I may have no idea what the heck I'm talking about...

@ masterful & Prius: I gave Choice Band a mention in the AC of the Choice Scarf set, because Tyranitar generally does better than Krookodile when it comes to abusing CB.

@mudkipmaster: There is no such thing as a lead in the Gen. V metagame because of the Wifi clause.

In the ability field, please only list one ability; don't slash them. If neither ability is better than the other, then leave the ability field blank. In my opinion, Moxie is better on the Bulk Up set, while either is acceptable on the choice set - but both work, so I would be okay with leaving both fields blank and mentioning the differences in additional comments (Intimidate lets you switch in on stuff like Tyranitar more easily, while Moxie can net an important power boost that allows Krookodile to clean up more easily, which both sets can do).

There are a lot of opinions on which of the two abilities are better on Krook's sets so this is a good idea.

Thanks for the catch Eo. I'm updating the analysis now.

Bloo

Banned deucer.
This looks good, though I do have two suggestions for you:

 1. Mention Choice Band in Other Options. Krook is a tad slow for a CB set and doesn't pack the raw power of other CB users like Garchomp and Tyranitar, but it's still a viable alternative that deserves a mention.
 2. I'd de-slash Substitute from the Bulk Up set and shift it down to AC, simply because I believe Taunt is the better choice since it prevents 'mons like Skarmory and Hippowdon from phazing you.

[Overview]

Krookodile has an above average a good base 117 Attack and a slightly below average base 92 Speed. Its excellent Ground / Dark typing, which gives it valuable STAB and excellent coverage from the Earthquake and Stone Edge combo in the EdgeQuake combo alongside Crunch or its semi-exclusive move Foul Play, which works by using the target's Attack stat to deal damage. When equipped with a Choice Scarf, it Krookodile becomes a revenge killer that could tear unprepared teams apart.

Despite all of Krookodile's perks, a few potentially debilitating problems still plague this sand crocodile. Its average bulk leaves it vulnerable to most forms of priority attacks, especially from Pokemon like such as Conkeldurr and Azumarill. It also has a concerning lack of reliable boosting moves, but Bulk Up and Hone Claws are usually enough for it to get its job done. It also faces rivalry from Tyranitar and Hydreigon as a team's Dark-type of choice, and Conkeldurr and Scrafty as a Bulk Up abuser. Despite these problems, this sand crocodile Krookodile can cause quite a bit of hurt if left unnoticed.
(you are concluding the Overview with that sentence. Flavor is nice, but it is better if you use "Krookodile" there instead of repeating "this sand crocodile")

[SET]
name: Choice Scarf
move 1: Earthquake
move 2: Crunch
move 3: Pursuit
move 4: Stone Edge
item: Choice Scarf
nature: Adamant / Jolly
evs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe

[Set Comments]

Equipped with a Choice Scarf, Krookodile is capable of outpacing most of the OU metagame. With Moxie, it has a chance to sweep after getting even one KO. Its advantages over its main rival, Tyranitar, are its higher Speed, Moxie or and Intimidate, and not bringing up sandstorm. Earthquake is used because it is Krookodile's most reliable move. Crunch lets it KO the Psychic-types rampant in the OU metagame. Stone Edge is used to hit the various Flying-types that will inevitably switch into Earthquake. Pursuit allows Krookodile to trap Psychic-type Pokemon that switch out in fear of Crunch or Earthquake. The EVs are simple: maximize Speed and Attack are maximized with the remaining 4 EVs thrown into HP. With the EVs given, Krookodile reaches 366 Attack and 424 Speed with the Choice Scarf. After a direct KO, Krookodile's Attack stat reaches 549 with Moxie. However, its decidedly average defenses leave it vulnerable to priority attacks and faster Scarfed Pokemon Scarf users such as Garchomp.

[Additional Comments]

A Jolly nature could be used to outspeed even more Pokemon, but nothing notable is outsped and OHKOed by Krookodile that lies between 424 and 466 Speed. Jolly also costs Krookodile a bit of power. Outrage could be used to land surprise KOs on Dragon-types that switch in. However, this allows Steel-types like such as Ferrothorn and Skarmory to come in on Krookodile and set up entry hazards as it switches out. Fire Fang and Thunder Fang could be used for additional coverage, but their mediocre power is usually a turn-off. A Choice Band could be used for more immediate Attack at the cost of its Krookodile's role as a revenge killer. If Choice Band is used, then Foul Play becomes removed from the options won't be an option because Krookodile will most likely have more Attack than the opponent. Foul Play could be used with a Scarf, but is at best unreliable as it uses the Attack stat of the opponent. Intimidate lets Krookodile switch in more easily on weaker physical attacks, while Moxie lets Krookodile potentially sweep weakened teams.

Thundurus and Zapdos can switch in on most attacks thrown at Krookodile, and absorb them with relative ease, and threaten many of its counters with boosted Thunderbolts and, in the case of Thundurus, a Prankster priority Thunder Wave. They must carry Toxic or Hidden Power Grass in order to beat Unaware Quagsire, though. Alternatively, a Grass-type like such as Breloom or Virizion could be used to beat Quagsire. Regarding Breloom and Virizion, they can also threaten Krookodile. They can be beaten with Latios, Reuniclus, or Tornadus. However, note that opposing Breloom and Virizion can also pose a threat to Krookodile with their STAB attacks. In this regard, Latioas, Reuniclus, and Tornadus are good teammates for Krookodile, as they can dispose of the aforementioned threats with relative ease. Skarmory and Gyarados can switch in on every move that Krookodile packs (except Stone Edge for in the case of Gyarados), and threaten it with pHazing or boosted Water-type attacks phaze it out or threaten it with Water-type attacks, respectively. Excadrill with an Air Balloon can switch in on most of Krookodile's moves when a sandstorm is brewing under sandstorm, outspeed it and Earthquake it smack it with Earthquake.

[SET]
name: Bulk Up
move 1: Bulk Up
move 2: Earthquake
move 3: Crunch
move 4: Stone Edge / Taunt
item: Leftovers
nature: Adamant
evs: 156 HP / 252 Atk / 100 Spe

[Set Comments]

While Krookodile's main niche in this metagame is being a fast, relatively solid revenge killer, it can also assume the guise of a bulky setup sweeper. Bulk Up is one of Krookodile's only boosting moves, the other being Hone Claws. Bulk Up, and allows Krookodile to raise its Attack stat while boosting its modest Defense. Earthquake serves as Krookodile's main STAB attack, while Crunch and Substitute could be used in the third slot. Crunch gives Krookodile a way to hit levitating Ghost-types such as Gengar. In the last slot, Stone Edge is the preferred option to round out Krookodile's coverage. However, Taunt could be used to prevent Pokemon like such as Skarmory and Ferrothorn from setting entry hazards up, statusing it inflicting a status condition, or pHazing phazing it Krookodile out. The EVs allow Krookodile to outspeed all non-Scarfed Tyranitar. The EVs given yield, and give it 370 HP, 264 Defense, and 176 Special Defense with Intimidate in play.

[Additional Comments]

A Jolly nature could be used to outpace most of this set's counters, but Krookodile loses out on a bit of power. An EV spread of 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe could be used, but Krookodile misses out on decisively important bulk. Fire Fang and Thunder Fang could be used, but their mediocre power when not hitting super effectively is the usual turn-off. Substitute allows Krookodile to scout for status, while it coupled with Dragon Tail could be used to and, in conjunction with Dragon Tail, beat most of its usual counters, such as Skarmory and Bronzong. Intimidate lets Krookodile switch in more easily, while Moxie lets Krookodile further boost its Attack stat after it gets scores a direct KO.

As this Krookodile plays differently than Choiced Krookodile from the Choice set, different teammates are needed as different counters arise. Despite this, Unaware Quagsire remains a universal counter, as it ignores all of its Krookodile's Bulk Up boosts and threatens with Scald. A Grass-type of your own, such as Ferrothorn or Rotom-C, can be used to threaten Quagsire. Ferrothorn is especially notable as it can lay Spikes or Stealth Rock, which makes Krookodile's job easier. Faster Special Attacking Pokemon special attackers, such as Latios and Virizion, threaten with attacks that hit Krookodile's unboosted Special Defense. Thundurus can cripple both with a Prankster priority Thunder Wave or its own powerful special attacks.

[Other Options]

Dragon Claw and Outrage can be used on the Choice Scarf set to nail various Dragon-types on the switch-in, but the Pokemon that are already resistant to the QuakeEdge combo usually resist Outrage as well. Hone Claws is Krookodile's other boosting move, but the only move that would even benefit in the slightest is Stone Edge. Fire Fang and Thunder Fang could be used for more super effective coverage, but their general lack of power usually discourages their usage. Rock Slide could be used over Stone Edge if Stone Edge's mediocre accuracy is discouraging, but keep in mind that Krookodile will miss out on various KOs because of Rock Slide's 75 Base Power. Foul Play is Krookodile's other main Dark-type move, but it is unreliable at best because it uses the opponent's Attack stat rather than its Krookodile's Attack stat. Choice Band can be used if you wish to play Krookodile in a similar way to its friends Ground- and Dark-type brethren, but keep in mind that it lacks the power presented by Tyranitar and Garchomp.

[Checks and Counters]

Conkeldurr, Scizor, Azumarill, and Mamoswine all threaten Krookodile with boosted priority attacks that bypass its excellent Speed after a Choice Scarf boost. Excadrill, when in the sand and holding an Air Balloon, can revenge kill Krookodile with its superior Speed and Attack stats. Virizion and Breloom are especially deadly to Krookodile because they resist both of his its STAB moves and Stone Edge, and immediately threaten to KO it with STAB Grass- and Fighting-type moves.

A few Pokemon can also use their defenses to suck up what take whatever Krookodile throws at them with ease. Skarmory can use its Steel typing and base 140 Defense to Whirlwind it Krookodile out and reset its stat boosts. However, Skarmory will lose against the Bulk Up set, assuming Krookodile is using both Substitute and Dragon Tail, Skarmory will lose. With Quagsire's new Dream World ability Unaware, it Quagsire can switch into any of Krookodile's attacks and threaten it with Toxic or a Water-type move. Other bulky Water-types such as Gyarados can do this as well, but must be aware wary if Krookodile has acquired more than one Attack boost. Alternatively, Poison Heal Gliscor can switch in and threaten Krookodile with Fling.

[Dream World]

Anger Point, which is Krookodile's Pokemon Dream World ability, has not been released yet. It is absolutely useless compared to Moxie and Intimidate, because those abilities are what distinguish Krookodile from its fellow Dark-types.

Fire Fang and Thunder Fang could be used for more super effective coverage, but their general lack of power is discouraging usually discourages their usage. Rock Slide could be used over Stone Edge for accuracy reasons if Stone Edge's mediocre accuracy is discouraging, but keep in mind that Krookodile will miss out on various KOs because of Rock Slide's 75 Base Power. Foul Play is Krookodile's other main Dark-type move, but it is unreliable at best because it uses the opponent's Attack stat rather than Krookodile's. Choice Band can be used if you wish to play Krookodile in a similar way to its Ground- and Dark-type brethren, but keep in mind that it lacks the power presented by of Tyranitar and Garchomp.

[Checks and Counters]

Conkeldurr, Scizor, Azumarill, and Mamoswine all threaten Krookodile with boosted priority attacks that bypass its the Choice Scarf set's excellent Speed after a Choice Scarf boost.

A few Pokemon can also use their defenses to take whatever Krookodile throws at them with ease. Skarmory can use its Steel typing and base 140 Defense to Whirlwind Krookodile out and reset its stat boosts. However, Skarmory will lose against the Bulk Up set if, assuming Krookodile is using both Substitute and Dragon Tail (does it also win with Taunt?). With Unaware, Quagsire can switch into any of Krookodile's attacks and threaten it with Toxic or a Water-type move. Other bulky Water-types such as Gyarados can do this as well, but must be wary if Krookodile has acquired more than one Attack boost.

These are mostly wekhter's changes. Good job wekhter.

edit: if only I'd waited a couple of hours....

You mention that Krookodile doesnt get any form of boosting it;s attack outside of bulk up and hone claws but it actaully gets swords dance.

The analysis is correct: Bulk Up and Hone Claws really are the only two boosting moves. Krookodile does not get Swords Dance.

I know this analysis is technically done, but there are a couple things Krookodile might like to outrun on the Scarf set that can only be done with Jolly: CS Lucario who hits 459 Speed and can make mincemeat of it with a Close Combat (not to mention being able to catch a free Attack boost if it's Justified), and Ninjask, who maxes out at 460 before Speed Boost (though there will probably be the odd Infiltrator once that comes out) and can pick it off with X-Scissor or Bug Buzz. With Jolly, a Scarf, and 240 Speed EVs, Krookodile hits 462, thus being able to beat Lucario one-on-one and can catch Ninjask by surprise. Of course, speed creep is likely going to be an issue.

A lesser option that might be of use to Krookodile on some teams would be a CB+Moxie sweeper set. Being locked into Outrage isn't as bad as it usually is when you've got Choice Band working for you, and the extra immediate power will increase the chances of getting that first KO to get Moxie rolling. Resisting SR, two very useful immunities and unimpressive defenses only make this hit and run style more appealing.

Those targets are not common enough to make a deal out Krookodile's Speed. In fact, Scarf Lucario is pretty much obsolete. Besides, the Jolly nature is already listed if the user wants to use it.

A quick thought for the Bulk Up set: Running a faster Speed stat will alow Krookodile to check Lucario and non-Scarfed Heatran if it runs 240 Speed if a player wants to drop their other stats for compensation. This way after a BU, Krookodile won't have to worry about being forced out seeing these two. 4 more Speed can outrun some Gliscor sets and be able to Taunt before Gliscor can.

[Set Comments]

While Krookodile's main niche in this metagame is being a fast, relatively solid revenge killer, it can also assume the guise of a bulky setup sweeper. Bulk Up,(*) is one of Krookodile's only few boosting moves, the other being Hone Claws, and allows Krookodile to raise its Attack stat while boosting its modest Defense.
There is a comma after bulk Up. Should it be there? Also, there is no ability in the above set. It is mentioned in the comments, but I thought that it had to be included in the set?
