Any idea of where the regional tournaments will be taking place, or where the 2008 Regionals were held?

The Regionals, just a guess, in Hawaii.
The Qualifiers we already know what countries. In United States, NY, LA, Chicago possibly. Im just guessing.

Last year there were a total of 2(!) regional qualifiers, one in NYC and one in LA. The top 8 entrants from each tournament went to the showdown in Orlando where they played the top 16 players from Japan. The Japanese players were actually the the top qualifiers from a tournament held in 2007 with the same rules. I guess they were too lazy to organize regionals over there last year.

As for 2009, I believe they've had 47 qualifiers in Japan thus far, which would be one for each prefecture(think state). My guess is that they'll have one more qualifier round to weed out the competition before they ship them over here for the showdown.

As for other regions, Europe and USA are both confirmed. They will probably have 4-8 regionals in the States alone with European countries limited to one qualifier per nation.

Alright, let's predict what cities qualifiers will be held in:
LA
NYC
Chicago
Orlando
Seattle
Houston
Sapporo
Yokohama
Nagoya
Makuhari
Fukuoka
Osaka
London
Paris
Berlin
Barcelona

I predict those 16 locations with the winner and runner up from each local tourney going to the showdown (which we all know is in San Diego).

Earnestly, I don't think it will be held in Paris %)

Or if it will be held in Paris, it would be at the Japan Expo €_€

Eh, I was just guessing because iirc they've had random event Pokemon in France before. What countries did that Journey across Europe '06 tour attend? On second thought it may have just been UK.

Okay, seriously, let's get a Toronto regional confirmation PUSA!

Edit: I just realized they're going to have the national tournament in St. Louis which would lead me to believe that Europe/Japan will also have a final round national. The prospect of there actually being a national tournament (tournament, as in more than one location) here in Canada is slim to none, ugh.

Those chances ARE none, it's already confirmed only USA and Europe will have such Regionals.

that's shitting. Canucks are a good chunk of the Pokemon playing community, and should be given at least one regional tournament. I mean, it's the same friggin size as the United States, and Nintendo hasn't thrown a bone their way ever. i can't even think of a time when an event took place there.
[/rant]

On another note, could one of the more experienced guys answer the question I'm having with my rmt? It seem sso trivial, but it's really tripping me up.

A snnowball's got better than a zero percent chance in hell, but you give up hope on it pretty quick, assuming from how hell works with snowballs. =P

Not really related to doubles or the showdown but can anyone else teach me how to choke less? I did this in last years showdown, the smogon wifi showdown tourney and the wifi UU tourney.

Try to get into the mentality that every game is your last one, adn that you've got the same chances of getting knocked out in the first round as you do in the final. just relax, and stick to your plan.

Nintendo does not explicitly say that there will be no tournament in Canada, therefore, the chances of there being a tournament are greater than zero.

There's a chance, but then there is also stubornness. I can GUARANTEE you there wont be any. I already have spoken to people related to the Showdown, and they will be held at locations where there are Nintendo offices, and there is no Nintnendo Canada.

Usually, people are just naturally competitive, so when they are put in a tight situation, instead of folding under pressure, the pressure makes them perform better. But since it sounds like that's not you, the best advice I can really give other than stay calm and focused, is to think about how you can't choke more than Expert Evan did last year.

ouch, dude where did that come from.

There is in fact a Nintendo of Canada, however, it is a subsidiary of Nintendo of USA iirc.

That's irrelevant anyways since Nintendo has nothing to do with hosting these events (ignore the thread title). Back in '05 when they did that whole battle atop the space needle event, Canada saw some inclusion in the form of lumping us together as a "region" and sending our top two qualifiers to the tournament. USA had 6 regions that year, but honestly, if you were to look at the number of entrants in each zone they'd probably be pretty equal. There was no local qualifier or anything though, it was all done online, which is probably why you're right about there not being a tournament.

Too bad the VGS is nowhere near as popular as the TCG.

I heard you have to do some online questionaire of some sorts to be able to even go to a qualifier.. Can somebody confirm if this is true or not? And where would this be? etc etc.. :toast:

That was last year. seriously, everything that ANYBODY knows about this year can be found here:

and for the next few people who ask (and they will ask even after all the posts saying this) NO DATES HAVE BEEN CONFIRMED YET!

One loss can mean the difference of either going to the nationals or going home with (how can I put it more delicately) consolation prizes.

Ouch EE. =/

So I've heard that this is played on PBR? If so, should I assume that we need a pool of six Pokemon to battle, and not just four?

A team is limited to four Pokemon. You can have as many as you want ready to switch between rounds.

From last year at the stops in NYC and LA, only the final round was played on PBR; the other rounds were hosted on DS's at special stations.

I can tell you the consolation prizes pretty much suck lol. ;P
