Final Grades/GPA thread/School/University Discussion

Sent in my U of Waterloo and U of T applications. Dead sure to get in, dead sure not to get scholarships (unless I pull off an amazing 37+).

My parents said they're willing to pay for it though, but I'm kind of hesitant right now. Applied to the cheapest dorms possible.

I'm not for sure going to Brown. They are the first university to give me notification. However, I'm pretty stoked regardless, they have a really nice program :)

tennisace - how do you know about the pizza?

Keep in mind that if you go to Brown, you are going to the same school as Emma Watson. That's always a plus ;)

I live in RI, did a summer program and took a course in computer programming, and I'm now working on my senior project with an engineering student there. I pretty much know my way around campus =)

My friend is going to Brown now, I think she's what... a sophomore or junior there by now. She really likes it except for the weather compared to California's weather.

I've found that if you write one about your intended major, one about community service, and one about extracurricular activities, you should have most of the bases covered. In addition, most teachers are willing to go back into the recommendation they gave you and edit it slightly to fit the scholarship (at least, mine are since they let me look at mine before I sent them off).
I know I have one about community service and one that's halfway about extracurriculars and halfway about my major (biology) so I could just split that one into 2 different essays. And I have at least 3 teachers who I'm pretty close to that would write me recommendations about anything I asked for. I just need to actually get out there and look, which is hard when I don't have a lot of time. Of course I'm wasting time right now typing this post, but.. this is more fun than sifting through scholarships and editting essays :P

Like others have said, fantastic grades can only get you so far man. You can have the best grades anyone has ever had but if you treat your peers/co-workers etc like that you probably won't get far in life :|

But anyway that's enough negativity ~_~;

Wow, if that's negativity from you, I can see why you got nicest user.

Did you apply to Dartmouth? :x

Probably not I'm guessing because their program isn't strong in your interests. (or rather there's nothing there for your interests.)

Nope. They don't have a single person there working on PL! It's surprising. Maybe I can get a job there after I get my Ph.D.

Hope they are good for Biomedical Engineering!

Well my predictions were entirely off.

I got a 39/45 predicted. I am so freaking shocked.
6's in all my subjects Cept one
7 in chemistry
2 extra points from essays.

I am so shocked.

Just finishing up my first week of my Web Design/Networking course, which is mainly working with HTML/CSS/PHP/Perl/mySQL/others. I'll also need to figure out how to set up a network/maintain it/etc.

So far, so good.

I got my final marks for the extra semester that I was doing in high school. Therefore, when I go to University of Ottawa, my scholarship average will be calculated with the following marks:

Food and Nutrition - 90
Earth & Space Science - 89
Data Management - 86
Chemistry - 85
English - 82
Writer's Craft - 82

This makes an 85.7% average which is enough to get me an $8000 ($2000 per year) scholarship, which is pretty sweet. My entrance average will be a little lower, because I'm applying to mathematics, so it takes my advanced functions (70) and calculus (80) into account.

I know it's odd that I'm applying to a major that requires lower marks, but I really like math...I was just a lazy motherfucker back when I was actually in grade 12 (plus I'm not good at final exams); I got my act together during my extra semester, which would explain the higher marks (I had the 90, 89, and 85 from that semester).

Got the last of my results this week. I did alright, but not as good as I expected.
Biology was thoroughly average, I knew the facts but my writing style let me down (straight merits)
Chemistry I got all excellences bar structure and bonding, which surprisingly was the easiest one. >.<
English, surprisingly well considering my complete lack of interest and study.
Physics, really well though I bombed in electricity/magnetism.
Statistics, I got all but one at excellence level, fucking dominated the equations paper, though got a merit in the probability one, fffff. I'll show YOU mutually exclusive. Hmmph
Classics; I really dig this subject and my interest showed in my results, pretty awesome. :)

And I passed my Scholarship Stats (like an undergraduate paper for the top high school students) paper which puts me in the top 3%, and I get a handy $1000. Plus my school is public so they are all like wow, you're the first year 12 to pass that. Apparently they get mean funding from it.

just for the non-new zealanders here, getting a national scholarship in any subject while in year 12 is very impressive. nice going md!

anyway, i was wondering if a few of you americans could answer a question for me:

i applied, and was accepted to a college in the states in mid-january. problem is, it's very expensive. i've applied for financial aid, and the forms reached their office on the first of february, but in the meantime, i have to enrol at my back-up university here in new zealand - our college year starts in about a week.

how soon should i expect to hear back about the financial aid? i uh, i have about a month before my nz fees become non-refundable. is there any standard waiting period?

Right so okay I'm off to uni again next year!
Have applied today to: The London School of Economics (won't get in), SOAS (won't get in), Goldsmiths (should get in), London Metropolitan (will get in), Brunel (will get in).

I have ABC. The first two/three want straight A's (and probably four A's at that).

I'm applying as a mature student though, so I get a bit of leeway.

My chosen subject - politics! I look forward to many happy times with Deck Knight next year...

yay, i got my first college results back today and i got into cal poly slo! :) it's not as impressive as several other people's admissions but it's a decent school and i was seriously considering it, so i'm happy.

Global Studies H- B+ or A- (its in the 89-91 range, havent gotten final grades yet)
English II H- B+
Alg 2 H- A-
AP Biology- A-
German 3- B- to B+ (so annoying >_>)
Geometry A+

Not bad ^_^

Hoping to go to a Medical school, or if I'm up for it get a scholarship for Track.

Just got accepted to University of Waterloo - Honours Bachelor of Mathematics (co-op). I'll do a major in Combinatorics & Optimization, and a minor in Pure Mathematics or Computational Mathematics, or just a double major two of them.

semester starts today for me. this week is just a lot of reading though lol. question for distance ed. uni students: is it worth going to the residential schools? i.e. a few days in a week where you go in and get lectured with the others.

chaos, i said it on irc but your admissions are truly impressive! and congrats everyone else.

Thanks everyone for the kind comments :) It's been a long ride. I think I'll post a thread about my experiences with the process later. At least I can say I ignoring Smogon for a year and a half yielded some good results ;)

Hey Chaos, do you mind posting your stats, and which school you went to?

I think David Graeber is at Goldsmiths, which is pretty awesome!
