Makin' it Rain: UU Rain discussion

(And I win yet another bet, thanks ToF)

Weezing has Thunder because bulky waters like to switch in on it as it sets up rain. Like Milotic. As you noticed. It's not meant to stick around and be a wall, it's meant to set up rain, hit things, and go boom.
The team in general consists of multiple sweepers, who are capable of setting up their own rain, and one defensive pivot (Weezing). Teams using Damp Rock use two-three rain setting walls because Damp Rock actually gives enough time to switch to sweepers and have them set up. Using the same strategy without damp rock would be pointless, and it wouldn't work very well at all, as you could tell if you've ever used a rain team and had your damp rock tricked away from your wall as you set up rain.
In short, don't lecture me about teambuilding with rain.

"Ludicolo would have done fine against Raichu"? At 28% health?
And note that Kabutops was paralyzed, going to it would have just let me set up rain again just like I did with Qwilfish, at which point Umbreon would have killed Kabutops, died to Gorebyss after doing some damage to it, had Hitmontop kill Gorebyss and die to Qwilfish (this is where rain runs out) and Raichu sweeps my team, just as it happened in the original game. No, I don't think I could have played any better than I did.

But you know, you're more than welcome to make a damp rock less rain team yourself and prove me wrong, if you believe my poor play and teambuilding is what caused these results.

My point when mentioning that was one: rain is much more manageable if your opponent has only 5 turns to work with, and as he said, had those been 8 turns of rain, it was a sure loss; nothing further than this. Whether there was or wasn't missplaying, bad teambuilding or gimmicky sets; it doesn't change the fact that Damp Rock would have played a vital role on this match.

Also, I don't get how Ludicolo could have beaten Raichu, provided rain wasn't up and that the aformentioned mexican poké only had 28% Health.

That log just looks as if FlareBlitz was trying to lose (because he is a good battler, and made horrible plays in that battle).

I guess I'll test it and post logs. I really don't like using Rain though, since it's really not even that good.

I would think that a whole topic dedicated to it and a plethora of users complaining about would warrant something being good, but to each one's own I guess.

And I don't care how Flareblitz played, I know for a fact that I would have lost if Damp rock had been in use.

Ok, so I guess I misread some damage calculations. Nonetheless, I will point out your flaws in the game.

Number one, you sacrificed Weezing like for no reason at all. Like, seriously you have a rain dance team that can take any water attack and you sacrifice Weezing like it doesn't matter at all. By the way, if you had a Registeel instead of Weezing, you were sure to win the match, which is why I said it looked like a dumb team.

Number two, you lost the mind game against Umbreon. I can call this a mistake; indeed it was a toss-up, but I can just as easily say that he was obviously going to Sucker Punch each turn until the rain would subside. It just then comes down to the turn after rain is gone. Again, tough call but it can just as easily be called an error as it can be a toss-up.

Basically you killed Weezing for no reason, so its like you didn't even have a choice as to anything that could take on Raichu. Should have just switched in like Ludicolo or Qwilfish. Then again, if you didn't use Weezing and used something normal, you probably would have also won.

This match was fairly straight forward. I like how, even though the Rain sweepers can't always "finish the match in 2 set ups", that my non rain sweepers are so much more effective. Mesprit is probably my MVP.

I used Damp Rock for this match, and I found that I really couldn't do shit against his Rain counters without the reliability granted from Leftovers with Mesprit. That said, I did mess up a bit. However it still stands: I lost with Damp Rock when I could have won with Leftovers.

No Damp Rock for this match and I basically walked all over him, again, with Mesprit, due to leftovers.

So yea, maybe the Rain sweepers aren't "as" good without the 8 turns of Rain, the support Pokemon who set up Rain are at least twice as good. Leftovers grants them excellent staying power, while Lum Berry and Focus Sash help with reliability.

Damp Rock is not broken, even if Rain somehow is.

@ JabbaBelow:

That is a good point, I'll get 6 more of each.

n of 3 (if we ignore that it's the same person) isn't really that strong. i'd advise people to refrain from posting a small amount of logs and claiming that to be a be all end all in the discussion. for something of this magnitude i'd really say anything less than 15-20 is irrelevant.

you played quite poorly during the match with damp rock. Kabutops swords dance waterfall in the rain ko's launturn (99% - 116.7%) so there was no need to risk stone, but that was minor compared to sacrificing gorebyss for no reason, it was obvious porygon-z was scarfed, and you should have known that scarf z is faster than gorebyss

Anyway, I seem to be in the minority here, but I do not actually think that rains is broken. If you create a team with it in mind like you would create a team with stall in mind you shouldn't have that much trouble with it.

So the OVERALL point instead of judging us of whether we played bad or good was that because Rain had a shorter time, it was easier for me to stop alot of his sweepers and the trick on the first turn was also huge for me as it limited his kabutops and allowed me to waist his alredy short Rain. One of the biggest mispredicts though was poison jabbing rotom, i was just going to sack it really to waist rain. Wouldnt call this the best warstory, but adding another example of a battle without Damp Rock

Further proves my point: Rain is just as shitty with or without Damp Rock.

Damp Rock would have made absolutely zero difference in any of the losses I had w/o it. In fact, Leftovers would have definitely aided me in the ones where I lost with DR.

I don't even know what I care so much about Damp Rock being nominated, because Rain is clearly not broken in the first place.

Could we see a series of Flareblitz Damp Rock logs to decide whether Heysup is good with rain or not? Because if he isn't, those logs are all null and void.

Heysup, Rain doesn't "suck". I've gotten to 1650+ CRE with just my rain team, and last meta an individual called PowerToThePika reached 1630+ CRE with it.

What we're trying to determine now is whether Damp Rock breaks it or whether the sweepers break it.
If we ignore the non-Damp Rock matches you had against things like Accupressure Drapion, we find that your losses were due to your opponent making intelligent switches and stalling out rain or using priority to beat you. This is what Damp Rock aids in.

I think I might have taken the wrong approach to this. I think first I'll post what my matches look like with my good rain team. Then I'll post what they look like with my damp rock-less team. And I'll even change that team to include Registeel instead of Weezing (even though it's a terrible choice as that'll leave my team wide open to fighters and SD Venusaur)...hopefully that will please people complaining about the team itself.

Hold on a minute.

Wasn't the "main" point of rain is that it took no skill to use?

Way to backtrack. Unless you're fine with contradiction sitting among the other flaws in the "Damp Rock is broken argument".

And stall users, balanced users and heavy offense users break these marks and higher marks all the time. Why out of all these styles should Rain be the one that's neutered? Is it because it's easy to put together and use? I could argue that stall is the same way. There are several stall templates that are common sense and playing a style like stall is pretty much "make the obvious switch." So make sure you can argue why rain deserves special treatment.

psycho was like 1700 this period with stall for a while, maybe we should ban all the defensive Pokemon?

Even in Flare's case... his CRE doesn't look too much higher than it is any other period when he was leaderboarding with a different strategy to me.

I personally feel that a lot of teams are woefully underprepared against rain. It is just like stall or hyperoffense in that if you don't keep it in mind when you are team building it is extremely unlikely that you just coincidentally supplied yourself with all the tools you need in order to combat it. When you are reasonably prepared (and I don't mean these bs 4 sunny day Pokemon + Toxicroak and jolly Kabutops teams I keep running into), the person who plays the better game normally wins. Rain is very successful at setting a tempo, but so are both of those other strategies I mentioned. You know early on in a game what each of them are trying to do. Rain, like HyperO, wants to win quickly. It has a bunch of Pokemon that aren't very durable, and while you're typically hitting harder than a team in its sister strategy, you have fewer turns to do damage in and your coverage is a lot worse. It's also much more predictable and does worse in drawn out battles, in addition to being frailer (if harder to damage). Needing rain up is an issue too, since it ensures there are opportunities to press an advantage for the other team, where is a normal HyperO team would be trying to keep the opponent pinned down with consistent offensive momentum.

I think what irks a lot of people about rain is that rain does a good job of making sure you're playing its game. Regardless of the style you play, you need to make different decisions against rain than you would against a normal team. I don't think that's an issue - I have to play more conservatively against stall, but that doesn't make it broken (though I'd love to see it die off). I've seen good offensive teams beat rain and I've seen good stall teams do it, but I haven't seen either style do it by trying to play it like they would if I wasn't trying to keep rain on the field. Stall has to use defensive pivots and entry hazards, but it has to do it at the right times. You can't expect to win spiking into a Swords Dance, or whatever, and I wonder how much of that isn't the problem with people who hate rain so much. All of these "rain does this every time so broken" turn maps include >>>SWORDS DANCE HERE<<<<. You probably don't want to let rain do that. The rain sweepers simply don't get enough important 1HKOs (and even 2HKOs in some cases) on important defensive pivots without that SD.

More than anything else, the short games rain creates forces players to make good decisions every turn. Maybe people just aren't doing that.

Heysup, I don't recall ever saying that rain takes little skill to use, but that it takes disproportionately little skill to use. I wouldn't be able to beat some of the people I've beaten if I was using any other non-broken playstyle.

Jabba, the difference is that no one is saying stall/balanced/heavy offense sucks, with respect to that particular argument. I'm not saying rain is broken because I climbed the leaderboard with it; it's broken because it has powerful sweepers who posses a decent defensive typing and gain STAB on an excellent offensive type and who, under rain, posses better offensive stats than most Ubers, gain access to boosting moves, and gain coverage options sufficient to beat all their checks. And similar to how Soul Dew performs the same function as Choice Specs but with the important boost to SDEF and the ability to switch attacks, so too does Damp Rock allow rain to last crucially longer, preventing the opponent from stalling you out and giving you the flexibility to switch around based on resistances.

Anyway, I'm on the ladder now, and I'll be playing a few games. Expect a couple of logs.

Heysup, Rain doesn't "suck". I've gotten to 1650+ CRE with just my rain team, and last meta an individual called PowerToThePika reached 1630+ CRE with it.

I really don't want to sound like a broken record, but getting to the top or close to the top of the leaderboard does not mean that type of team is broken. A good player with a good team will always win the majority of his/her matches. I don't know how many times I have to repeat this. However, this does not make the team broken. Getting to the top of the leaderboard only proves that you are a good player, not because anything you are using is broken (It's possible to be broken, but there needs to be a lot more factors considered to prove that it is broken). I have said this before: If this is the case, we may as ban Leftovers to stop stall teams, and ban Life Orb to stop offensive teams.

Back to whether Rain or sweepers are broken, I have already made it clear that Kabutops can kill many of the stuff that outspeed it with a Swords Dance up (While running Jolly), so it would seem to me that Kabutops at least, is near broken without Rain, and the Rain would just push him over the edge. I could try the same sort of thing with Ludicolo and the other Swift Swimmers too, but we can see that Kabutops is probably at least Suspect worthy.

Again, I never intended to use my leaderboard status to prove that rain was broken, merely that it wasn't "shitty".

Anyway, Syrne, my CRE isn't particularly high now because I've been losing games testing the incredibly shitty non-damp rock using rain team. And also because I experienced a hax streak of truly epic proportions a few nights ago (ask the three or four people who were stalking me). Regardless, that's not relevant.

However, I'd like to comment on what you said regarding "rain plays like hyper offense". I don't play it like that (if I'm using damp rock). I play it more like Balance; a few people have commented on how it doesn't bother me to stall out a few rain turns to poison something or get some hazards up or whatever. I honestly think that style of playing rain is more effective, because you lose the primary disadvantage of normal Balance teams (the tendency to lose momentum...rain teams should ALWAYS have momentum) and gain more powerful sweepers than a normal balance team could ever dream of. And the thing is, if people do as you do and play "like they should against rain", they'll have a tough time against my team because I don't mind getting stalled out of rain if it means the opponent's rain checks are going to be slightly weaker.

Regardless of my feelings about rain's brokenness, it really is a fascinating playstyle simply because of how unexplored any tactics and playstyles beyond "yay i shoot water at you now" are, and how the style has the potential to flatten ANY other playstyle.

Styles shouldn't be rock paper scissors either way (though team matchups sometimes are), that's the fun of the game, really. I think the fact you're playing rain differently than the norm that way lends credence to the style if anything, there are team creation options there if people choose to look for them.

I didn't mean that comment as "here is the answer key for playing rain ohmigosh you guys" so much as you need to adapt to the styles of your opponents to be successful in basically every Pokemon metagame. Normally it is just the case with a pokemon, but here is a style that people just can't seem to handle because they don't want to adjust. It is silly to expect to play every game the same way. Even in the rain/rain games we had the other day, I played against you fairly significantly (as significantly as you can in a 20 turn game) differently after I understood what your team was running better. That's pokemon, you play in a style that works against your opponent. That's probably one thing your version of a rain team does better than mine; while mine is probably better at brute forcing its way through teams, yours is probably better at adapting because it's not as power-centric, it has the ability to slow things down a little more and play a slower tempo. I don't think one way of playing rain is necessarily better than the other the way you seem to be arguing, though I suppose you could make a claim one way or the other based on what the opposition at the time is doing.

I think that as you guys who are testing it are finding, removing Damp Rock completely destroys rain to the point there's just no reason to play it over a more conventional team. I think it'd be a mistake at this point to remove the style completely - the metagame is perfectly capable of adjusting to make it stick out a little less, and it isn't as inherently simple as people like to make it out to be. I see an awfully lot of poorly constructed rain teams, and as one would expect they end up at pretty subpar ratings, for the most part, even on a ladder that doesn't seem to realize it needs to prepare for one of the metagames biggest threats.

Except you need to argue that it's broken for this argument. Additionally, your CRE still doesn't say Rain isn't "shitty". I got to 1580 with a Gravity Team, does that mean Gravity teams aren't shitty? No. They are quite shitty, it's just a matter of me being able to be bad people on the ladder.

Anyway, if your CRE is low from testing a non-Damp Rock, where are the logs? You've had ample time to post them and this makes it quite evident that you're cherry picking them.

@ Synre:

I don't think the logs I posted show anything of the sort, Rain is almost (not exactly, but almost) equal with or without Damp Rock. I don't even think this matters, since Rain is far from broken, however just "incase", I made it quite apparent that Damp Rock is not the culprit.

You can't just "adapt", to suggest its that easy is flat out ridiculous. This is the same thing as just "adapt" to yanmega. A lot of people have toted this word as their only argument but have yet to show me any conclusive proof of successful adptation. Are you adapting to rain, or just shit players using rain? Really have a think about that. Rain 'counters' are flimsy at best, as flareblitz can attest to.

True, but rain shits on all three.

I actually think Ludicollo is a better sweeper. ThevSD is absolutely brutal and has even LESS counters than tops. While not as strong, it is still dangerous. Ignore it at your own peril.

@Syrne

"I don't think one way of playing rain is necessarily better than the other the way you seem to be arguing, though I suppose you could make a claim one way or the other based on what the opposition at the time is doing."

I didn't mean it to sound like I was saying "my way of playing rain is the best way", but that it's better than the hyper-offensive "throw sweepers at them until they lose" method most rain players use. Even you made intelligent switches when necessary, although not as many switches as me (which is to be expected since you had more frail sweepers who can't really take hits). Most rain players seem adamant to keep in their current Pokemon because switching would "cost them turns".
This is why I believe your criticism of players refusing to adapt to rain players is so interesting, because I feel the exact same way about rain players themselves. Adaptation works both ways, and I find it odd that some individuals (such as psycho) basically instantly lose against rain (not really a criticism against him, but every game I play against him he seems to make very predictable moves...and you can't win against rain like that) and some rain players instantly lose against any team with a Toxicroak or Poliwrath because they don't know how to play around it.
Ultimately, my point is that if players current unprepared for rain adapt, then it's possible that players unprepared for teams who have good rain checks adapt, meaning we're right back where we started; it will end up being an unstable equilibrium. That's total theorymon, of course, but it seems like what'll happen if we assume that all players are at least somewhat intelligent and competitive.

"I think that as you guys who are testing it are finding, removing Damp Rock completely destroys rain to the point there's just no reason to play it over a more conventional team. Completely agreed with this, and quoting for truth. I'm beginning to see that it's the people who actually have significant experience playing with rain that understand just how powerful Damp Rock is.

@Heysup

"Except you need to argue that it's broken for this argument"

Except I was specifically responding to this part of your post:
"Further proves my point: Rain is just as shitty with or without Damp Rock."
In retrospect, I probably shouldn't have bothered, as anyone with passing experience in the UU metagame know just how strong rain is.

"Anyway, if your CRE is low from testing a non-Damp Rock, where are the logs? You've had ample time to post them and this makes it quite evident that you're cherry picking them."

I've asked two people to post logs where I play against them with my team, and they have. I've asked more, but they haven't gotten to it yet. I like my logs to have comments annotated to them by the players who I was up against. And I'm attempting to find a log where I actually win against a competent player so you don't accuse me of being biased or whatever, but no luck so far.
As a general summary, my losses so far with my damp rock-less team are not really log-worthy. Typically, games end with a Raikou or Mismagius substalling my rain and then sweeping my team, or a scarf Porygon-Z sweeping my team because rain runs out way too fast, or an SD Venusaur sweeping my team because rain runs out way too fast, etc. These logs don't illustrate anything beyond how crappy swift swimmers are without rain up a majority of the time.

"I don't think the logs I posted show anything of the sort, Rain is almost (not exactly, but almost) equal with or without Damp Rock."

Sten voice: No.
I didn't really want to say "well your logs sux" because I hate people that do that, but honestly. I respect that you didn't want to seem like you were nitpicking, so you just posted the first few games you played, but they didn't prove much of anything at all. One of the logs had someone quit after 4 turns for god's sake!

True, but rain shits on all three.

And you, my friend are only toting statements like "Rain is broken" without much proof, either. You sound much more emotional than analytic (Your Suspect nomination was pretty good, what happened to your abilities to argue to a case?? Seems like they have gone out the window). Yes, FlareBlitz has beaten you (And others) multiple times with his rain team, but have you ever considered the fact that he simply outplayed you instead of "Rain team being broken"?? Rain counters being "flimsy" doesn't always mean it's broken either. Having few counters does not make something broken. Here's two extracts from the the Colossoil discussion from CAP (It was on the Smog here):

Colossoil really has no concrete counter, but the term "counter" is thrown around so loosely nowadays, and people think that having no counters instantly puts it in the Uber position. However, when comparing it to a Pokémon like Gengar who also has no concrete "counter", it is apparent that having no concrete counters does not make a Pokemon broken.
It shifts the metagame, so it's broken, you say? Tell that to Blissey, who effectively walls the majority of special sweepers in the game.
Now firstly, I know CAP is a completely different metagame, but the arguments are the same. Having no concrete counter is not a be all and end all in determining whether something is broken or not. Rain, like Gengar and Salamence in OU, can be played around with. Even IF Rain is broken, we are still arguing whether Damp Rock is the culprit here, and I have shown that Kabutops, Ludicolo, etc can still be deadly outside of Rain (Broken?? Maybe, maybe not), therefore, if Rain is making them broken, it is the sweepers' fault more than the Rain itself.

Are you adapting to rain, or just shit players using rain?
I am going to quote this for emphasis, because I am beginning to sound like a broken record. A good player with a good team will always win the majority of his/her matches. However, this does not make the team broken. I am seriously going nuts from posting this again, and again and again.

Actually it's quite the opposite of what you said. Rain is probably the easiest team to adapt to. It is one dimensional; you won't be able to play around the counter used. There are so many Pokemon that counter Rain Dancers without specializing, such as Venusaur, Absol, Hitmontop, Registeel, and others.

Yanmega simply could not be adapted to. It had one switch in: Chansey. Chansey is way too easy to remove to be the "only counter" to it.

No it doesn't. See how easy it was to refute that statement? People simply stating "I used rain and it's good and this thing is broken" does not constitute as an argument for Rain being broken.
