Just wanted to know until what time the events goes to on Sunday? Going to try to make it down Sunday around noon - 3ish, so was wondering if it will still be going on about that time so I can watch the end of the events.

I really really doubt it will go that long, it will probably go to around noon or one but don't quote me.

This is probably the simplest of questions, but I'm really curious about the Mighty Ducks. I've been hearing a lot about them and I've been seeing them constantly at the national and regional events. What is the Mighty Ducks group all about?

It is an Elite group of VGC players that was coined last year by the MC, and it just stuck.

Other than that - It is like any team. Just a circle of friends who practice and play together.

If i missed anything - i am sure a duck will correct me soon.

Mostly Smogonites (and close friends of Smogonites) who have been chatting in #smogon for ages. Elite is kind of the wrong word I guess although it's also true in a sense. They're not ducks because they're "Elite Pokemon Players", they just happen to be awesome Pokemon players. Most likely because they've been playing on and off for a decade. There were ducks who never played VGC before placing as high as second and as low as a round 1 or 2 exit.

Also because the shirt is awesome. The coining of the term was last year at world's or nats. Someone can explain it better. Mr Huy Ha's Disney's Mighty Ducks themed team was the inspiration.

The shirt means the person is awesome, friendly, and from Smogon so go say hi and tell them who you are.

Nick McCord, the MC from VGC, is actually where the design for the shirt came from. He has a friend who made it for Fish or zerowing, who then shared it with everyone else.

So, I saw this asked in another thread, and the poster was redirected here. I didn't see the same question asked anywhere in this thread, so I guess I'll do the honors.

What device was being used to record the VGA games? Is anything like it available for commercial purchase? Does it work with DS Lite and DSi? Will it blend?

At the VGC we had to put our games in a slot in a big white box. The DSs were connected by a cable to the box. We couldn't see inside the box so it's unclear what they were using. I'm not sure if there is anything commercially available to put the DS's top screen on a TV or to record it directly.

i have a question:

so legal hacks are not allowed? does that mean if i see something like a perfect IV'd poke (eg 404 hp jirachi) its an automatic disqualification?

Well you are going to get DQ'd for the Jirachi since its banned. But yes, legal hacks aren't allowed, but RNG'd flawless pokemon are allowed.

Rule of thumb, always be polite. Never accuse someone of cheating because some people really do RNG really well. I played a guy with perfect shiny kyogre and a perfect shiny metagross. But if someone is using stats that aren't possible, ask a ref for help.

agreed

Do VGC competitors generally hack their pokemon (to legit stats in order to avoid training) or do they go for RNG and train their pokemon to 100?

The majority of the people I played against RNGed (or SRed), and trained to some level above 50. The autoleveling makes it unnecessary to train to Lv. 100, and once you reach that level, you can't redo your EVs (which sucks... I'm gonna have to catch another Heatran... x_x)

SR?
So the battle is basically wifi where it automatically brings it up to 100?
I thought you could redo EVs at 100, you'd just have to put the pokemon into the pc to see the changes?

VGC rules (together with technical support from the game) brings Pokémon above level 50 down to level 50, so there's no point in training higher. (The same way Battle Tower works.) And you can't redo EVs at level 100 nowadays, except using berries and vitamins; the PC does settle the EVs, but there's no way to gain the EVs to settle in the first place, as at lv. 100 you can't gain experience.

And SR = Soft Reset, repeatedly loading from a save file then catching a Pokémon in the hope of getting one with good stats at random. Much more tedious than RNGing, although it tends to give decent results eventually (some players are morally opposed to RNGing, for some reason).

so, what are the chances of a pokemon having perfect IV's, legitly?

also, if your opponant uses a pokemon that is legitimately hacked, if there anyway you can figure it out?

The chances of pokemon having perfect IVs legitimately are close to 100% if not 100% if they know how to RNG Abuse. Otherwise it is impossible if they breed with two pokemon that have a total of three flawless IVs in a stat or more. If it is a capture it is 887503681 if they don't know how to RNG Abuse along with a good nature the chances are much less. So the only way to get one really usable you need to RNG it most of the time.

Idunno man, a lot of people, even here have bred some crazily good IV pokes without RNG abuse. Me personally, I've never had the patience to do it, but especially with the new "power item trick" in HG/SS to guarantee you pass a given IV, I think it's definitely possible even without RNG abuse.

I said the likely hood for catching, for breeding it is much, much higher. You can switch the parents often to get more and more 31 stats. People normally use RNG'ed parents now though, like the flawless Dittos.
