I run the smogon fantasy hockey league, and I would definitely be down to run this if we could get 12 (ideally) guys. Baseball is my best fantasy sport and it would be my pleasure to wipe the floor with you guys ;)

Alright, if you're going to run it, please make it an H2H league!

H2H 5x5

wouldnt do keepers since were not established yet (were just getting into keepers now with hockey, its a mess to coordinate)

auction v draft would be up for voting i guess, we can worry about that later.

I would be looking for exactly 12 people, I will probably end up picking subjectively based on who I think will actually see it through to the end if we get more people than that.

I'm not a firm believer that Boston, San Fran, Texas, and Philadelphia being legit until i see them play legit baseball. Boston more than anything. Agon needs to be acquainted with the Green Monster. He's gonna have to settle with doubles or change his swing all while adjusting to the AL. CC? who did he replace? These two guys replaced Beltre and Vmart. The net gain of offense is 0. Their Pitching staff needs to be stellar or they get trampled on all over the place. All New York (Yankees) have to do is get a solid two starter and they're set to win the division (mind you, they don't have the Rays to worry about anymoer). I want to see some offense from the Giants before i consider them a threat. They barely made it into the off season and picked up the offense they needed at the clutch. I do think they have great pitching. The same goes for Philly. They have great pitching (though from brief research it sounds like their bullpen is not very good). Unfortunately, what are they gonna do without Werth? As for Texas, Is Beltre gonna show up? In other news for the Rangers, what's their pitching gonna be like without Cliff Lee and the fact the more often than not a staff's ERA goes up after they throw into the World Series.

IMO, the AL East is gonna be a Knockdown, drag out battle. Only one team is gonna come out of their into the post season. The AL Central will be a battle between the White Sox, the Tigers, and more or less the Twins (Bull pen was absolutely devastated in FA). The AL West will be the most exciting division if all the talent shows up.

NL East will be a battle between Atlanta and Philly, not sure what my opinion is about the Marlins... NL Central is gonna require attention if all the talent shows up as well. Could be a four to three way battle with Milwaukee, Chicago, Cincinnati, and St. Louis duking it out. If San Francisco doesn't show up, Colorado has dibs on the NL West.

That doesn't make sense. What do you mean "settle with doubles"? You make it sound like doubles are a bad thing. Doubles in Fenway would very easily be outs in Petco. It's not like he'll be eaten alive by the switch of leagues, either. That argument only really applies to pitchers, and the AL East isn't exactly filled with Cy Young candidates. The NL West was, and the NL West has three terrific pitcher's parks. The AL East has Fenway, Camden, Rogers, and Yankee stadium - all are friendly towards hitters.*

Their Pitching staff needs to be stellar or they get trampled on all over the place. All New York (Yankees) have to do is get a solid two starter and they're set to win the division (mind you, they don't have the Rays to worry about anymoer)

Why exactly does Boston's pitching staff need to be stellar but all New York has to do is get a good #2? Both Staffs are structured similarly, even with a slight edge towards Boston. And why exactly don't they need to worry about Tampa Bay?

J-Man you're missing an important point about the Sox: their bullpen is significantly improved from last season. The additions of Dan Wheeler and Bobby Jenks make a whole lot of difference, because now in the 7th/8th/9th you can spread around innings with Wheeler, Jenks, Bard, and Papelbon, reducing the wear and tear on all their arms.

In addition Carl Crawford + AGon are more valuable than VMart + Adrian Beltre because Carl Crawford is a huge speed threat and is good for like 50 steals a year. Since the starting lineup is looking like Ellsbury/Pedroia/Crawford/AGon, if Crawford can get on base and steal, a double from AGon is a run.

Also I'd take John Lackey as a #4 over Ivan Nova, and I'd sure as hell take Josh Beckett over AJ Burnett as a #3.

id do fantasy for sure. However, i thnik it should be something like 6x6 or 7x7 (standard 5x5 plus some other shit like ops and things)

as for the AL east, its gonna be fun all year. people think the rays are still in it, and if their pitching blows everyone away, they could be in it, but they lost like 5 starters on offense, including 2 of their best hitters (in pena and crawford) and replaced them with questions marks. Their bullpen go stolen away from them literally by bostona nd ny (soriano, wheeler) but their starters are young and improving.

anything im going to say ever has already been said by someone, so im just going to leave it at: its going to be fun. especially if baltimore or toronto decide to play, because they both have potential to screw around a bit

Carlos Pena was crap in 2010. The only real loss was Crawford, but they still won 97 games. I don't see why they can't reach 90 without him and some changes to the bullpen.

And I was in defense of the Marcum trade. He's a soft tosser who didn't have a single season where he threw more than 160 innings, yet he still blew out his arm. Plus he was arbitration eligible, and the Jays have Stewart and Drabek looming. I wouldn't quite say he's the Jays' ace, either. Both Romero and Morrow are more talented.

Well guys, pitchers and catchers report tomorrow...this season is sure to be another pitcher-dominated year, especially since many big sluggers have switched teams/stopped roiding. I'm a big dodger fan, and I like the team's solid rotation (Lilly, kershaw, billingsley, and kuroda) but relief (sans hung chi quo) and hitting are gonna be shaky not to mention the McCourt divorce.
Aside from the doyers, I look forward to watching the braves try and make a statement with a new coach and a fresh roster, as well asthe new and improved Big Red Machine ft. Lee, hamels, doc, et al.

I didn't say the Red Sox suck, i just said i want to see them play legit baseball before i jump on the bandwagon. I'm just keeping my mind open to possibility of one of these teams that are guaranteed this year to make it to the post season with whatever big acquisitions they made might fail... Boston to me seems like a target. I don't see where they could be dominant with CC and Agon. To me they still look like the same 3rd place team with a little extra speed and a home run hitter who might not find it enjoyable seeing his home run production decline thanks in part to the Green Monster. Their Rotation is gonna have to come out of a funk or their offense will have to bail them out and their bullpen will have to play shutdown pitching (obviously possible considering the talent). Again, sign me up for the bandwagon if the Sox show up, but until then.

Also, why does everyone say the Rays can still compete? It confuses me so...

As a Yankee fan, even I can safely say that the Red Sox will have a very tough team to contend with this year. Even if their new players don't outproduce the departing members (which they will most likely do), the simple fact that they CANNOT be as unhealthy as they were last year will mean that they will definitely win more than the 89 games they won last year with a dilapidated team.

You're not making any sense. Decline from what, exactly? Adrian Gonzalez was a monster hitter while playing in an extreme pitcher's park; what makes you think he's going to hit worse in a hitter's park? Because The Green Monster is thirty feet tall? Come on now. You can score runs without dingers, and even if they hit more doubles than usual, it won't make a difference. I hope you know doubles are a good thing. Besides, Gonzalez in a left handed hitter.*

Why not?

I know doubles are a good thing. They might not be for a guy, who hits his home runs to left field and is also a home run hitter. I don't know, would Pujols want all his production to come from doubles even though he has better potential than all doubles?

-They lost a huge chunk of their killer bullpen, especially where it counts (closers)

-They lost CC, who's gonna replace him?
-They lost a ss, probably not that bad
-They lost Pena, an all or nothing hitter who's great on defense

They replaced their numbers with unproven talent and Johnny Damon and Manny Ramirez...

Well when you have Jacoby Ellsbury, Dustin Pedroia, and Carl Crawford hitting in front of you, and Kevin Youkilis behind you, I'd be pretty comfortable with a double off the wall. Just think of it this way: both Ellsbury and Crawford have the speed to steal second at any point. A double brings them home, and a good bounce brings them around from first. Besides, there are things called away games. He'll have plenty of opportunities to hit home runs to left in other parks.

Well, unfortunately you aren't Agon, so we'll have to see what Agon decides to do. If he does so than good for him, Boston becomes deadly via living up to its potential.

alright guys i set up the league, most of the finer details we can settle once everyone is in, so a lot of the defaults were left for now.

I want a 12 person league, no more no less.

I want people who will be active and check the pool every day. This means if I know you I have a better chance of trusting you to do this. Using irc helps a lot.

so basically if you want in, pm me on the forums. i will give the league info out to people who fit the above criteria.

So how exactly is that going to harm the offense's production if Gonzalez doesn't like doubles? And you do know that he hit in PETCO PARK, right? And you do know the relevance of this, right?

-They lost a huge chunk of their killer bullpen, especially where it counts (closers)

No. Wrong. Closers are not the most important bullpen pieces. Read this:*http://joeposnanski.si.com/2010/11/26/the-age-of-the-setup-man/

Oh, and, check this out:

Joel Perralta in 2010: 3.64 xFIP
Rafael Soriano in 2010: 3.84 xFIP

So, essentially, the Rays replaced the most expensive reliever this off season with a 950K investment. People really need to understand that relievers are essentially worthless on their own and are the most overrated players in the game. They pitch seventy innings a year for goodness sakes.*

They've restocked their bullpen just fine. I am going to admit it's gotten worse, but the effects are almost insubstantial.*

-They lost CC, who's gonna replace him?

Damon, who's a reliable regular. It's a big drop off in terms of ability, sure, but losing one player isn't going to cripple you. Five or so wins, at most.*

-They lost a ss, probably not that bad

Bartlett sucked in 2010. Replacing him with Brignac might actually help the team.*

-They lost Pena, an all or nothing hitter who's great on defense

The Rays won 97 games with Pena hitting .196/.325/.407. Ha. Like they'll miss him.*

Alright so I gave it a few days, but I didn't even get 12 people.

I'll ask some people I know who I think are on Smogon so that they'd at least be familiar with the site. Did you definitely decide on an auction draft? And what website are you using to host the league? (They will probably ask.)

I know im posting this like a month late. But fuck the angels for making that awful deal for wells. I'm still mad about it

yeah yahoo for sure

i think auction is better, but if more people want to draft im not inflexible.
