2011 Music

Arctic Monkeys' new single is pretty great. I like how each album offers a little something different.

In related news, I listened to Alex Turner's work on the "Submarine" soundtrack, and it has to be the most boring OST I've ever heard. Thank God it's only an EP.

perhaps it is the bad posing, the terrible eye makeup, or the terrible lipstick; who can know but you?

I think it's the fact she used the same clip art font I used in grade 6 for my science fair project. Chrome shine and all.

frankly i'm ambivalent at best about having racists respect me sooooo.........
This is childish.

The new Fleet Foxes album is pretty good, but after a few listens I gotta say it isn't near their first album's greatness. I really do like Grown Ocean, Lorelai, and The Shrine / An Argument though.

see, here's the thing about interactions with ck. he'll say something so unfathomably pretentious that it's matched only by its stupidity. attempts to refute it are then met with the laughable claim that music is completely objective and that in his infinite wisdom he has determined exactly what makes music good and what makes music bad (ignoring the fact that almost everything he listens to is deplorable fucking hogwash).

while it's more mature to just shake my head and ignore it, i am at times a petty man, and i want neither to let him off easily nor tax myself with the burden of telling him that he's a buffoon, so rattling him by calling him a racist despite it being completely baseless seemed like the best approach.

i was not expecting a gem like "... why the sound and band were a failure." though! how ambrosial

Rattling? It is called slander, and while some slander can be funny, this was fucking ridiculous. I do not think you could actually name a single band I have listened to in 2011, or my favorite band, so your deluded rant/justification is nearly as fucking ridiculous.

You disliking my personality, and apparently resenting my intelligence, are not valid grounds for whatever slog your brain marched through to arrive at calling someone a racist being clever/cute. I like music by happening guys like B. B. King, but that would not prove I was not racist, just like me explaining why a boring mismash of punk and hard rock failed to ever matter is not in any way racist. It is immaterial, and your response shows a far deeper buffoonery, stupidity, et cetera than I have shown at any turn in my adult life. I am sure in your mind you are going to come out of this deeply assured that you put me in my place.

EDIT: Actually rather than using a shitty rhetorical to put you in YOUR place, I will just go ahead and say that the bands I have listened to in 2011 are bands like YUP, Blood Brothers, Richard Hell & The Voidoids, and other bands that you would never have placed in my music taste because you have no idea what it is; the songs I have listened to are things like Colin Newman - Life on Deck that I imagine you would like, and alternately songs like W.A.S.P. - Chainsaw Charlie that you would probably hate. Your opinion does not give you an excuse to paint me with some wide swath of bullshit just because you disdain me. I make no pretense of the genres I like and dislike, but that does not mean I am listening to "bad" heavy metal/death metal/power metal 24/7 (and my music taste is nearly evenly split between metal, progressive rock, and hard rock anyway, I just like metal the most at the end of the day).

Also just to waste even more time to show how you do not understand my taste, here are my most recent playlist additions (all of my 2011 additions for the most part, except whole YUP and Blood Brothers albums maybe)

Colosseum - The Valentine Suite
England - Three Piece Suite
Haikara - Koeyhaen pojan kerjaeys
Soft Cell - Entertain Me
W.A.S.P. - Chainsaw Charlie
Television - Torn Curtain (I hate the band except for this song)
Vox Dei - Las Guerras
Axel Rudi Pell - Sweet Lil' Suzie (worst song on this list, and a hell of a great workout song)
Julie Driscoll, Brian Auger, and The Trinity - Flesh Failures (Let the Sunshine In)
Richard Hell & The Voidoids - Liars Beware
Manfred Mann's Earth Band - Father of Day, Father of Night

I would hope that you would learn from this not to judge someone in such an overreactionary and hateful manner just because you decide to get touchy about a brief comment about a band you some overboard personal attachment to, but humans rarely learn from their mistakes.

EDIT 2: You call me out for being pretentious, then say ambrosial. Was it supposed to be tongue in cheek, or are you just a hypocrite?

This quarrel is a lot like the stock market; it's blatantly unnecessary and harmful to society.

Disclaimer: I do not actually think the stock market is worthless.

Oh, I thought I was not the one being irrational, but since Jackal said that it is okay for Glen to go batshit over a minor personal attachment to something, I will just have to take Jackal's mighty word for it.

what kind of self-conscious tool still takes people calling them racist out of the blue seriously?

I do not know, what kind of person calls someone else a self-conscious tool because the other person does not like being called racist over something that other person did not do? I am never going to apologize for taking anything seriously. I do not know why you are all hurrying to Glen's defense when he was the one who made ad hominem personal attacks and went on an insane rant, not me.

maybe because if you shut the fuck up and let that one snide comment go and stop taking everything so seriously the thread wouldn't be shitting on itself right now and we'd still be making productive posts

regardless of who made the attack and who ranted, you're both not doing anything good. it's like a four year old saying HE STARTED IT.

anyway

dled Ulcerate's new album after listening to half of it on youtube, sounds pretty sick so far. that Death song was pretty good too, i like the death metal band Death and i like punk so i was considering checking them out, should get around to that then.

other than that i'm mostly waiting for the latter half of the year for any new releases i'm looking forward to... Crowbar's new album sounds tempting too though, and i've been meaning to look into them for awhile.

ck can you stop being so racist and just move the fuck on dude seriously

anyway new crystal stilts is ok, the vocalist channels/fellates ian curtis on a level heretofor unseen, but it's not without its merit. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PUwtjSCMvec is kinda fun if you imagine a spooky skeleton band playing it or something, bones all rattlin', top hats slightly askew

cstvt (i miss when they were called castevet ;~;) has an ep coming out this year that's probably gonna be a singalong good time. if you like kinda twinkly punk that's vocally redolent of no matter where we go...!-era latterman, i would recommend these dudes.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6E_d7aI6jbY THE BUILDUP AT THE END...........MAN

This is stupid. It's really stupid. I don't give a shit if you're a moderator or not. Annoyance, and a slight hint of immaturity, is spawning from both sides. Nobody stir the damn pot, all of you are doing it.

Now, the new Gang Gang Dance is sex to my ears. Who else has been listening to it?

I gave Death, Lykke Li and Cold Cave a listen. Whilst never been a true fan of the punk genre (more into the hardcore side of it) I can say that I actually really like Death, they do have a great sound going and I find it hard to believe that sort of music was being made back in '74. Lykke Li was also quite enjoyable and I enjoy the atmospheric aspects of it. Cold Cave, I am not too sure on this one, at the moment I absolutely hate the vocalist, but I may find that it grows on me (unlikely atm :/).

Oh, and the new PTH album is very, very bland.

  • The Antlers' Burst Apart is the best thing released so far
  • Murder By Mountain by Red Fang is excellent stoner rock
  • Grayceon's third album is great, but the epic track outshines the rest too much
  • Buck 65 (abstract/experimental hip hop artist) released a solid effort with 20 Odd Years. The opener "Superstars Don't Love" is probably the best song released this year
  • New Gang Gang Dance is simply phenomenal
  • Despite hating the last album, the new Grouper album is awesome
  • If Not Now, When? by Incubus is the biggest disappointment so far. What a dull pile of shit.

What about tours, huh? Just recently found out that Styx and Yes are touring together, and they're actually making their way to Atlanta!!! Needless to say I bought tickets the day they went on sale for us. :D

i have doubts that anything will top cold cave's cherish the light years. on first listen it was the most offensive thing i had ever heard, but repeated listens warmed me up until a certain passion enkindled and i realized that this is the most honest album i have ever heard, even though it's painfully self-congratulatory and lyrically comparable to a 14 year old girl's diary at times. the fact that wes went from being in a seminal hardcore band to making shit like this just boggles my mind (even stranger is that the girl is from mika miko, aka teenage girls making super fun punk music), but i can't say i'm complaining. i do miss the lo-fi feel of the trees grew emotions and died (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=psvq60njm0w), but this is just so... so soul-baring. love comes close went halfway and seemed mildly disingenuous at times, but cherish the light years is a veritable pop masterpiece. he is not a very good singer, nor a very good lyricist, but he fucking means it, and nothing so far this year has touched me quite like this album.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EE0ZGYi9204&feature=related

the three best tracks on the album, in my opinion. the great pan is dead is so triumphant that it could rouse fallen warriors. if you had told me last year i would be shouting along to lyrics like 'they said the meek shall inherit the earth/ my god that seems like so much work' i would have called you a fucking twerp, but lo and behold, i was proven wrong by underworld usa. other songs have gems like 'seasons change and passions change but i live in a city with no seasons or passions at all/its awful' AAAAAAAAAA

this album completely redefined music for me, in that i never realized sheer candor could turn an album from mediocre, anguished synthpop into what i expect to be a seminal 10's album.

Very interesting. My only gripe is the vocalist's voice... God, sounds like the vocalist from White Lies except 10x worse.

yo glen a couple of things

a) lolling at this thread
b) crystal stilts are awesome
c) seriously can't thank you enough for death: constant roation

agreed. ck, enough of the racism, lets all move on and post some more good music

crystal stilts are only the third best crystals (crystal castles; crystal fighters)

crystal castles are terrible. stop giving people cover for their bad taste in music!

just listened to within temptation's new album. they've turned the cheese up to 11 this time - it's basically pop metal now but it's okay.
