Volbeat

Actually, wait. I just realized something.

Can Dream World Volbeat receive Baton Pass legally? It's an Egg move, and since Volbeat is an all-male species, I'm not aware of what limitations / requirements it needs to get this move.

If Volbeat legally obtains Baton Pass, good for Baton Pass teams with Stored Power Espeon. If not, eh....

Don't really know too much about how DW works but I'll assume it's like Espeon, it gets Baton Pass as an Egg Move and you can breed DW abilities.

Meh

the female counter part Illumise was released as well so you probably can get baton pass prankster volbeat.

Illumise when breed can produce Volbeat eggs and is how you get egg moves on volbeat much like how you get egg moves on nidoran M via breeding nidoran F.

Okay, I get it.

Illumise gives birth to both Volbeat and its own species, and since DW Illumise is out, just pair it up with a male Baton Pass / Encore user and see if you can receive a Volbeat with Prankster. On that note, good for Volbeat.

I would imagine, with a few defensive boosts, Volbeat can be usable on dedicated Baton Pass teams.

Yeah it has a chance to produce both Illumise or Volbeat when breeding hence why it's Egg Moves exist. We really don't even need DW Volbeat.

Edit: lolninja'd

I'm not even thinking about using this guy in OU lol. But in UU, you can rather easily justify an entire team slot for something that aids a sweep. Ask the Moth. But on the other hand, this means Baton Passing teams get stronger too. Grit your teeth, OU players.

I wonder which tier this guy will reach... something viable like the Smashpass strategy doesn't seem very viable, as Illumise/Volbeat are in general much weaker pokes than Gorebyss etc, but still, these guys could probably start fitting well in the UU environment. We can only wait and see!

Remember that Volbeat can also get Trick as an egg move via Medicham (breed Baton Pass onto it, then tutor Trick in Gen 4). Trick / Baton Pass / Tail Glow / Bug Buzz could help out on Baton Pass since it potentially screws whatever comes in attempting to set up on the weakest link of the team (Volbeat is so, so frail). It is also something is has over most other users of Baton Pass, and those that can (Celebi, etc) generally have more useful moves that they could be running. Volbeat does not, unless you want to use prankster T-Wave.

I used Baton Pass Volbeat a few months ago. It does work, since the general reaction to Volbeat was "lol Volbeat. Free time to set up rocks."

It's a shame Illumise can't baton pass anything. Unless leavanny gets growth in the future.

My first recipient of choice would probably be Starmie.

On Illumise, I would stick to Tinted Lens on her since she can't really use prankster to her advantage like Volbeat can.

I found this as well except for me the attitude was more "lol Volbeat, time to set up" so all sorts of set up sweepers would come in only to be taunted or Encored.

Speaking of Encore, its easily the best thing Volbeat has going for it.

Let's codify a set since it's officially released.

Volbeat @ Leftovers
252 HP/252 Def/4 SpDef
Bold / Prankster

Substitute/Encore
Baton Pass
Tail Glow/Encore
Thunder Wave/Encore

I think this has far more utility as a Substitute passer than as a Tail Glow passer. Realistically, this set can't be stopped, as any other Prankster pokémon can be caught on the switch with a Thunder Wave and then Baton Passed out of. Encore is useful as always, but its recipients will need to be a lot bulkier in order to take advantage of the immediate boost that Volbeat provides, or will need to take advantage of switching in on Volbeat's weaknesses. There's no point investing in its special bulk since it needs all the physical bulk it can get to survive powerful physical Extremespeeds like those from CBNite and SD Lucario and to take advantage of its fighting and ground resists. Its special bulk is decent enough that it can switch into walls that throw out Scald or non-stab Ice Beam, etc. Leading with Substitute first lets you baton pass into a safe switch, but the possibility of a tail glow pass is too good to pass up. Almost anything can benefit from +3 spatk or a free switch, but particular partners of mention include bulky water types, particularly Swampert and Seismitoad, ground types such as Nidoking, or Tyranitar, who is the only OU viable pokemon that covers all of its possible weaknesses Since +3 is such a big number, it allows physical sweepers to go mixed for a specific threat, or for something like LOZam to 1hko 252/252 Bold Blissey with Psyshock.

Why the fuck would you ever use Volbeat without using Tail Glow. That should always be a primary option with no other slashes. If you want a gimmicky Sub passer you might as well use something like Drifblim.

On Illumise, I would stick to Tinted Lens on her since she can't really use prankster to her advantage like Volbeat can.

She can GrowthPass +2 on the sun, TW, Wish(but sucks), Charm, Encore and be able always to be switched without taking damage with +1 Baton Pass.

I'll be using Speed Boost yanmega or Shaperdo as a recipient of tail glow. Give him a +3, protect, then You are at +3 +1 with great coverage

She can GrowthPass +2 on the sun, (…)

No she can't. That's an illegal move combination.

Anyway, this is the Volbeat thread, so I've got a question:

How much Special Attack does a max Special Attack Timid/Modest Volbeat reach after a Tail Glow?

I think the best recipient is something like Yanmega. It has Speed Boost to make sure that it can sweep, and let's face it, at +3, it'll power through most pokemon. It is resistant to moves like Mach Punch, so all it has to worry about is something like the rare Aqua Jet or Scizor. Sharpedo could also work, but Sharpedo is just so frail. But Sharpeod can run mixed to power through Blissey.
