Pokémon Black 2 and White 2 (DS, June in JP, Fall in EU/NA/AU) - Updated May 12th

By the way, I just wanna say something about Kyurem and his new formes.

These guys look so much like Palkia. Especially Black Kyurem. I mean, it has basically the same design, Bipedal, big feet, slouched over, long neck, splayed out legs. White Kyurem also looks a vaguely like Palkia. So does Kyurem's normal forme (Zekrom and Reshiram too to be honest). It's like they could have not think of another design. Don't get me wrong, these guys do look pretty cool, but do you question that Pokemon is getting too generic with their legends? They are not what they used to be, that's for sure. Even back in 4th gen, we had actually pretty creative designs.

I really hope that the original dragon breaks this curve of similarities and actually gets to looking different from other Legendary biped dragons. Something tells me that they are really starting to run out of design ideas (lmao Garboder and Ice Cream pokemon).

...Or maybe the original dragon had a role in creating the Sinnoh Dragons too.

it's typical anatomy with dragons of those sizes

and they really don't look that much alike. Different back structure, a different stance, etc.

You really can't say that because:

It's not like the pokemon are going to be based off real life anatomy anyways. They could have made a dragon that walked on 3 legsand 5 wings for what I know. This is why I like Giratina so much, he looks so different from other dragons, which is partially what makes him awesome. That's what I would like to see again. Something that deviates from the typical biped short winged design.

Well they wanted them to be bipedal (winged) dragons.
Which is

Spr_4h_149.png

why they gave it
170px-254Sceptile.png
Spr_5b_445_m.png

(yes I know sceptile isn't even really a dragon bear with me)
a wider bottom section with wide feet

and typically a slouch of sorts, counterbalanced by a longer tail &/or wings. (despite sceptiles great posture he's usually shown slouched while in motion)

It's an anatomy quirk for that body type you can find in other series and in real life (okay well not dragons but). Pokemon doesn't HAVE to follow it, true, and sometimes just doesn't, but for the most part it does because it wants to have the illusion of possibility.
Body06.png
look at most pokemon found in this body style and you'll see similarities there too
Quadruped examples typically have a wide stance and a straight or slanted back, too.

Besides take a good look at black kyurem's layout. Honestly it kind of seems more in line with a mix of quadruped & bipedal layout. Look at that spine curvature!

I dunno it seems odd to get miffed about this when

Something tells me you are gonna be very disappointed when they finally release them fully.

Not as much as I was when Platinum was released and the new Rotom were all still part-Ghost, or when HGSS was released and its Tutors sucked and we had no wild Celebi/Jirachi/Deoxys/Mew anywhere. But I got better.

Now that you said it... Black Kyurem's arms remind me of a gorilla. lol

And Jesus, I had forgotten how heinously fucking ugly Palkia is (and yet I love it).

You make it sound like String Shot wasn't worth spending 32 BP on

oh hey he kind of does, doesn't he.

Well whatever it is thats telling you that
its not pokemon designs.

pokemon have remained the same from I to V.
I mean, there has been pokemon with object mimicry from the beginning.
It seems like a silly idea at first but it takes quite some imagination to come up with great designs from that.

On your personal choices of hate:
Vanillite is not literally an ice cream. It's an Ice pokemon which looks like ice cream when covered in snow.
Snowless_Vanillite.png

How is that any worse than Diglett, Exeggcute, Voltorb or Koffing?
Or heck Porygon, who really IS artificial.

And for Trubbish.
It's not just based on a garbage bag. But also on the "cliche" (or what one would call this) of lazy people not taking their trash out for so long that someone starts joking it might turn alive and eat them.
Or just think of it this way.
Can you imagine a more cute and funny looking creature that is based on a trashbag than this?

Regardless of whether you will ever stop refusing to appreciate things for the sake of it, I argue its still miles more original than Grimer.

And we've heard "they're oooobviously running out of ideas" since gen III, yet I don't see any real decline in number of interesting designs still.

The limits of pokemon have been set up from the start in a way that enables them to never run out of ideas.
Because they can be based on actual animals and plants (of which there are billions of kinds),
any combination of those,
mythological creatures,
mimicry of inanimate things (we keep inventing all the time too),
even personifications (like certain fighting techniques for most Fight pkmn),
or stereotypes.

In fact, with generation V, they intentionally decided to reuse the most basic concepts that have already been done, and even with that as a starting point, most of them turned out really interesting and unique regardless.

I don't see what's fundamentally uncreative about an icicle ice cream cone or a living overflowing trash bag, anyway. Like those two are specifically brought up time and time again, but no really I want someone to explain to me how they're uncreative.
Look at those designs and you can tell there's thought put into them. The Vanil__ line as Charon shows is based around an icicle covered in snow, with the icicle specifically becoming larger, sharper, and more covered in snow as it evolves. It uses snow for contrast and uses the edges of the icicle bottoms to imitate an ice cream cone.
Trubbish & Garbador are garbage come alive, based around an overflowing garbage bag. They manage to make the knot at top to look like ears, give the overflow into limbs, and make the whole thing work as a body. Meanwhile Garbador is now forming all this garbage into a workable body, using the piping in it to create workable limbs.

Are either of these really any less creative than taking an animal and simplifying/exaggerating aspects of its design?
Or in the case of past generations' inanimate objectmons: a pokeball, a carton of eggs, a hatched egg, living letters, a windchime, a moai, a popped balloon, etc.

Something tells me that they are really starting to run out of design ideas (lmao Garboder and Ice Cream pokemon).

Game Freak has obviously been running out of ideas since the first gen. Voltorb, Electrode, Diglett and Dugtrio... Seriously, Game Freak?

A lot of the Gen 1 Pokemon, particularly evolutions, are pretty uncreative when you think about it. Several of them are pretty much just bigger versions of their younger forms with practically nothing added but a different expression (Clefable, Arcanine, Muk, and Poliwrath are guilty of that) or a group of the same Pokemon banded together (like Dugtrio and Weezing). The latter of which also opens up a rather disturbing set of questions like "How did the other Diglett get there?" Probably the most uncreative original one (if not of all time) is Magneton, who is literally just three Magnemites stuck together with no chances except MAYBE where the magnets are. At least they gave Weezing's heads different sizes and expressions.

Speaking of Koffing and Weezing, what exactly ARE they? When I was little, they looked like planets with gas leaking out of them, but now, I can't tell what they're supposed to be.

OP: My guess is that BW2 take place in a different region than BW1, most likely a land to the north of Unova. (If that's the case, and since BW1 took place around the New York area, then maybe BW2 would be based on New England.)

Also, if these games are direct sequels to the first Black and White, then N has to be in them in some way. This is even more likely since there are two different games this time. Nintendo didn't want to settle on N befriending one legendary dragon or the other, so they didn't; N will walk with one of the dragons depending on the version (probably Zekrom in Black 2 and Reshiram in White 2). That would be a smart storytelling move, IMO.

Also, do you think these games will really be called "Black Version 2" and "White Version 2" or something like that? I wouldn't be surprised if the names were changed, at least overseas. Maybe "Black Ice Version" and "White Snow Version" to reflect Kyurem's newly-acquired prominence.

Nah, Magneton's bodies are proportionally larger than Magnemite's, when you compare them to the size of the magnets and the white circle forming its "eye". This is most visible in the G/S art and sprites, though it might be an oversight by the animators.

Also, I think Voltorb's design isn't as lazy as it appears at first sight. Voltorb is not a living Poké Ball. It's a living battery. It has a positive and a negative side, generating strong electric power, but it's also extremely volatile and prone to explode. My guess is that the Poké Ball's design is based on Voltorb, not vice versa.

Electrode is much the same, but I really love the aspect of it being a living bomb that finds amusement in blowing up. They do it when they are happy, sad, angry, excited, scared, bored or just wanting to show off. While Electrode take no permanent damage from exploding, they are harmful to their surroundings, and other Pokémon tend to stay away from Electrode and treat them with proper respect. I've yet to see later-generation Pokémon having the same personality derived from their design alone (OK, I'll give you Sableye).

It all makes sense now.

Druddigon is the original dragon.

180px-621Druddigon.png

Sorry for spoiling Pokemon Black3/White3

But you've forgotten, Druddigon isn't black or white! The original dragon is none other than...
180px-306Aggron.png

Let's face it, he's even got Kyurem's shoulder blades, Zekrom's face and arms, and even looks like the tao pair's generator tails! And let's not overlook that posture of his. And just look at the last 3 letters of his name...

And you thought Tentacool would be an important character.

Voltorb was first sighted in pokeball factories.

just saying

If Dex entries are not reliable for information, WHAT IS? conspiracies are everywhere these days, even in the pokemon world, NOBODY IS SAFE AAARGH

Ok anyway just to remind you guys, we're here to discuss the upcoming games, not if Voltorb derived from the Pokeball or viceversa (:

Since we've got a bit of corocoro now, can we expect the rest throughout the day, or could it still all come out at a later date?

How far into this until we know what the tutors are; not until Japan gets the catridges?

Hoping for a Counter tutor. CounterSash Zam with Magic Guard would be so awesome ;.;

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think we ever knew move tourors untill the games are out.

Yeah, we usually don't find those out until the games are explored in-hand.

South! Philly/New Jersey D:
It could be filled entirely with Koffings and Machokes.

Play-Asia lists the price of these games as 59.99 according to the newest bulbapedia article. Does Play-Asia normally over price games or is this a bad sign of the price were gonna get in late fall?
