you probably could, i think it's moveset-legal. but trust me when i tell you, whirlpool sucks and is not worth using ever. magma storm is one thing, whirlpool is another entirely

Hello, i am new on smogon and i'd like to know if politoed can run a set with perish song and whirpool

HM dive is not available in BW, you can not shift HM moves either, nor does Politoed learn whirlpool naturally or breeding. So Politood can not learn both in 5th gen, yet.

In 4th gen this is perfectly legal though.

Its not the best idea either even if it was real since realistically most things that switch into politoed, can beat it before it can set up perish song and whirlpool. Whirlpool's shitty accuracy, low power, and the fact in order for it to work properly you need a grappling hook, makes it a terrible strategy.

Now if you want to use perish song + wobbuffet... by all means, troll to your hearts desire.

Whirlpool Politoed can be shifted from D/P/Pt, where Whirlpool is not an HM. It's still illegal with Drizzle though.

Yeah I guess your right, but there is no way to teach it in those games, you would have to trade it over from HG/SS then transfer. At the end of the day, yeah legal for non-drizzle politoed on showdown and other simulators, an awful weird process though in game.

While I am at it, what is the most convoluted multi-step way to get a particular move on a pokemon in gen 5.

What are the biggest threats to a SD Terrakion, and what roles do team mates have to play in order to facilitate a sweep?
As far as I'm aware of, Terrakion is pretty weak to priority in general (Mach Punch, Bullet Punch, Vacuum Wave...), so what are some good conter-measures?

SD Terrakion is in general weak to things faster than it- which, priority tops the list, but Lati@s, Starmie, Gengar, Alakazam, Tornadus, and Dugtrio all pose significant threats. A great partner would probably be a specially bulky pokemon like Jirachi, who can take hits from all of the above, parallyze, flinch, and heal with Wish. Deoxys-D is also a great partner, setting hazards to ease Terrakions sweep, as well as Taunting to prevent opposing setup.

Thanks for the reply. Would it be better to run X-Scissor or Earthquake for the third move? While Stabbed Stone Edge is amazing, I find it's accuracy to be rather disappointing.

x-scissor definitely, eq is really redundant with fighting in general (the only things it hits harder are poison types really... useful if you have a fourth slot, but not if you're looking for a third)

August's DW OU stats
| 17 | Regice | 116 | 9.400% | 74 | 7.417% |
That's a lot of usage. I thought that Regice wasn't that good. What niche does it have in DW?

look at the number of uses. it's so low as to be statistically irrelevant. DW only had 600 ish battles in the month of august and only 1200 ish teams (compare this to standard OU with nearly 270k battles and 540k teams); it's not indicative of much. when the numbers are that low, they have to be taken with a hefty helping of salt

as far as what regice has going for it, it's got ridiculously high special bulk and that's really about it. useful in NU from what i know, not so much up here

EDIT: thanks arcticblast. well there you go, it does have a tiny ass niche

Regice has Ice Body as its Dream World ability, and it can pose a threat to Contrary Serperior with its massive Special Defense and Ice STAB.

@ Face to Face

As far as walls go for eliminating, most of them are usually on a team to also serve the purpose of walling out Dragons and other physical pokemon. If you simply overload them with another sweeper aimed at getting them to low health, once at low health they are easy pickings to kill off and just another domino in the sweep.

What are some good volt turn counters?? For u turn gengar is really good, but is wrecked by bp and volt switch. Celebi gets destroyed by genesect. Are there any others with decent bulk yet not stallish?

Thundurus-T is a pretty good volt-turn check, since it's immune to volt switch and resists u-turn. Landorus is another decent offensive check and has its own u-turn. Ferrothorn is good too but it's probably too defensive.

1. If i had used AR/hacked my platinum game can i delete the save file and start over so i could use the pokemon for VGC after trading them to BW2? 2. If i got hacked pokemon somehow in my game cartridge could I just release the pokemon and still go to VGC or will my whole game now be hacked? I tried searching google all day help please.

This would probably be better addressed in the wifi or VGC Simple Questions threads, however, I'll go ahead and answer. To the best of my knowledge, the VGCs only check the members of your team that you plan on battling with. They do not look through the rest of your game cart. As long as the Pokes that you choose to use on your team are not hacked in any way, you should be fine.

And on a side note, your question is sort of teetering on the brink of being against Smogon's rules about using hacked Pokemon (per the wifi sections rules). Be very careful to not mention hacked Pokes on this forum. It is highly frowned upon.

thanks a bunch! no i never trade or used hacked pokes not even for breeding. I was just scared because i used to play around with AR when i first started playing pokemon and used to do a lot of trades over GTS.

Ok this isn't exactly a simple question, or even a pokemon question, but I have no idea where else I would ask it and smogon has a stupid amount of programmers.

I need help making a basic echo socket program. I am very interested in having a java program connect to servers and vice versa, but all the guides out there are pretty much over my head. This was the case until I actually found a pretty good youtube introduction for them and ripped the code off, here is the video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uo5DY546rKY&feature=player_embedded.

When I run this is almost works the same but with a few kinks, like my client and server don't communicate, all the client side does is fire off a ton of connections until it gets to my computer. Instead of "message received," I get this:
run:
Exception in thread "main" java.net.ConnectException: Connection timed out: connect
at java.net.DualStackPlainSocketImpl.connect0(Native Method)
at java.net.DualStackPlainSocketImpl.socketConnect(DualStackPlainSocketImpl.java:69)

at SOK_1_CLIENT.run(SOK_1_CLIENT.java:15)
at SOK_1_CLIENT.main(SOK_1_CLIENT.java:10)
Java Result: 1
BUILD SUCCESSFUL (total time: 21 seconds)

Which isn't what the video had at all, here is my server and cliend code to see if there is anything wrong with them. I have a feeling I just have something stupid in my code.
import java.io.*;
import java.net.*;

public class SOK_1_SERVER
{

public static void main(String[] args) throws Exception
{
SOK_1_SERVER SERVER = new SOK_1_SERVER();
SERVER.run();
}

public void run() throws Exception
{
ServerSocket SRVSOCK = new ServerSocket(444);
Socket SOCK = SRVSOCK.accept();
InputStreamReader IR = new InputStreamReader(SOCK.getInputStream());
BufferedReader BR = new BufferedReader(IR);

String MESSAGE = BR.readLine();
System.out.println(MESSAGE);

if (MESSAGE !=null)
{
PrintStream PS = new PrintStream(SOCK.getOutputStream());
PS.println("Message recieved");
}
}
}
import java.io.*;
import java.net.*;

public class SOK_1_CLIENT
{

public static void main(String[] args) throws Exception
{
SOK_1_CLIENT CLIENT = new SOK_1_CLIENT();
CLIENT.run();
}

public void run() throws Exception
{
Socket SOCK = new Socket("192.159.104.19",444);
PrintStream PS = new PrintStream(SOCK.getOutputStream());
PS.println("Hello to server from client");

InputStreamReader IR = new InputStreamReader(SOCK.getInputStream());
BufferedReader BR = new BufferedReader(IR);

String MESSAGE = BR.readLine();
System.out.println(MESSAGE);
}
}

Any help is appreciated.

Physically defensive Gastrodon is another great counter. It plain walls Rotom-W and Genesect, to of the most common Volt-Turners, and resists Scizor's STAB. It can also burn Scizor, erasing it as a threat. Toxic can be used to deal with Rotom-W. Although, it is a bit defensive.

Bulky DDMence can work as well, though it's not as solid. Because it is weak to Genesect but not to Rotom-W, make it come in on a U-Turn, and then set up during the turn Rotom-W is in. After a DD, you outspeed both, and can KO Genesect with Fire Blast and Rotom with Outrage. If there is no Genesect, then you can come in on either, and use Intimidate to buy yourself some quick physical bulk.

If anyone hasn't yet noticed, Beldum Labs is down and imo it had the best Synergy Calculator ever, BY FAR. I was wondering if anyone knew another good Synergy Calc. to use? All help is appreciated!

I use Marriland BW TeamBuilder, it has BW 1 pokemon and abilities, but not BW2, so that's kind of annoying.

^ Thanks, I've used that one before. I guess there really aren't any like Beldum Labs that actually gave you the pokes that match up the best synergy wise. Thanks anyway!
