Little things you like about Pokémon

I really admire how infrequently Game Freak introduces new types: nearly 30 years and only 3 have been added since Red and Blue. This sounds like a weird thing to praise but it really shows that on that front they're committed to keeping things from getting too crazy, only introducing new types to round out balance gaps (Dark and Steel being introduced to nerf Normals and Psychics as well as Fairy being introduced to nerf Dragons and make Poison and Steel more valuable offensively). There are a lot of other companies that if they had control over the Pokemon IP would probably just introduce a new type every gen or 2 for the sake of having something shiny and new to market without carefully considering the balance implications and type chart disturbances
That is something I have to give GF that. 18 types are already difficult to balance it out, and adding another one just for sake of it without carefully considering the balance would cause a lot of mess.

I myself was guilty of adding some fan types without considering the balance, and ever since I never wanted to add anymore and focus on balancing the Type chart itself. I'm certain many fangames, even the popular ones, would be guilty of that too.

I definitely want to see where GF could bring the type chart at this point, because I know there are a few things that had to be fixed.

Why not both?

Besides, I really doubt we'd get Japanese audio outside of setting the game in Japanese, and I don't want a Spanish, or worse, an English dub souring the experience. I prefer the current setup.
If Hollow Knight has taught me anything, it's that you don't need words to have great voice acting. Pokemon already has nonsense symbols for its in-world text. Might as well do the same with voices. Anything to prevent that something like that silent singing scene from happening again.

Let them speak smilish

Hey uh guys this is the little things you like thread not the "backhanded jabs at [current game]" thread
nonesense every thead is the "backhanded jabs at [some game]" thread

not necessarily at the current game I'll give you that but still :P

Larvitar's Pokedex entries:

Crystal Dex entry: "Born deep underground, this Pokemon becomes a pupa after eating enough dirt to make a mountain"

Most of its other dex entries say something similar: it's born underground, it eats a mountain's worth of soil to reach the surface and see its parents, and then it becomes a pupa (ie Pupitar) so it can eventually become a Tyranitar.

Also Tyranitar's RS Dex entry:

"Tyranitar is so overwhelmingly powerful, it can bring down a whole mountain to make its nest. This Pokemon wanders about in mountains seeking new opponents to fight"

Tyranitar basically uses toppled mountains to build its nest to raise its young.

Now let's look at the line's availability in Black and White. They are largely found in Route 15 in Unova, which looks something like this:

800px-Unova_Route_15_Summer_B2W2.png

Route 15 has a fairly mountainous terrain, but it has a rather cratered area in the middle.

But what's really important here is the encounter rates. Larvitar itself is unobtainable here, but Pupitar is, at a 10% encounter rate in the grass. Tyranitar is also seen in the wild here, as a rare encounter in the shaking grass. This is an interesting detail because it ties into this route as whole: Route 15 is essentially a Tyranitar nest.

That's right, this is basically a nesting spot where Tyranitar raise their young. You don't see any Larvitar here, but there are likely several Larvitar deep underground beneath the surface of Route 15, eating their way through to eventually reach the surface. All the Pupitar you see in this route are Larvitar who have reached the surface and pupated (ie evolved into Pupitar), and are waiting to evolve again.

I might be looking too much into this, but it's such a neat little thing that I find to be pretty interesting when you consider the Larvitar line's dex entries and evolution progression. I didn't think too much about seeing Pupitar and Tyranitar here, but when you look at it it's actually kind of neat.

I am a total sucker for when the series decides to be more of an equal celebration of its various games & characters rather than hyperfocus on *ahem* one or the other

So even if this video wasn't super stylish and a fun song in its own right, I love that its just that: a celebration of the series as a whole.
And even my cold bitter "im so tired of gen 1, please" heart smiled at deciding to referece

this, specifically.

You know, I do wonder if the exclusion of voice acting from the games is a budget/time issue or a deliberate choice nowadays

As much as I love shitting on SwSh and Gamefreak I legitimately think it was a deliberate choice. After all I think all Pokemon games lack voice acting (besides like, Pokemon Stadium).

I guess it just turned out to be awkward not having any on a modern main console game. Hopefully they add voice acting in the future but of all the things they could choose to not go "above and beyond" on voice acting is probably the most acceptable. It's kind of weird though as pretty much every single character gets a voice actor / actress in the anime and that stuff is probably set in stone before the games are even released so I'm not sure how difficult it actually would have been to add it.

Oh well, maybe we'll get some in gen 9.

I do errr on the side of budget/time for one main reason: Pokemon games have... A LOT of localizations, and those games are usually played by actual kids or people that generally do not really speak english well.
While other genres can usually get away with localized text + eng or jp only audio, I don't think Pokemon would be able to get away with it.

Providing localized voice acting for... how many languages again, like 9 now? is actually both time consuming AND pricey, so I can see it being a deliberate choice.
Which to be fair is a shame, but knowing how GF already has issues getting the games out on schedule without glaring unfinished elements, I think those would just add insult to injury.

Plus, imagine how long all the mandatory monologues would be if you couldn't just breeze past them by hammering the A button, but instead had to sit and listen to recorded audio playing at a set speed.

Time constraints definitely feel like what's going on here. Even if the full game wasn't acted, I just...there's so many cutscenes that feel absolutely 100% designed for voice acting.

I didn't even go into the game really wanting VO or getting into that discourse but from Rose's introductory cutscene its like wow!
You really really wanted this to have voice acting didnt you. Just the way its structured and how it focuses on the lip movements.
Then you get to Piers cutscene which just makes no sense to give folley and focus on him singing for a full 30 seconds and then not have a song to go with it.

Anyway that said I do think Pokemo ncould get away with just an English & Japanese dub for their games. There's many high profie games that dont get full dubs despite supporting many languages, likely because its too costly.
Pokemon Masters does that, incidentally.

I feel for this game in particular, Voice Acting would've been limited to the actual cinematic cutscenes. And maybe the little instersitials during battles.

DAMN, YOU HIT MY WEAKNESS, I KNEW YOU WERE A WORTHY OPPONENT WHO KNOWS HIS FORUMTYPE MATCHUPS!

Okay but that would kind of be excellent. Remember the over-excited Pokemon Stadium announcer?

"GOOONE, ITS A ONE-HIT WONDER!!!"

Actually that would be fantastic for all the stadium-style battles in SwSh. I definitely don't know how much it costs to add voice acting to a game but idk man if other companies can do it I don't know why Pokemon can't. It's literally the most profitable franchise in history with a roster of voice actors already hired to voice those EXACT characters in multiple languages. I don't get why they can't just have an additional recording session with the previously selected voices? I just can't imagine the reason being "cost".

Different companies, different contracts. The voice actors aren't contracted with Pokémon or with Nintendo in general, but with their local dubbing agency which again has a contract with whoever distributes the Anime, which have a contract with whoever produces the Anime, which have a contract with TPC. And then there's a couple contract steps down a different branch to Game Freak, and another step down to the local distributors of the game. It would take a lot of negotiating to get the Anime voice actors to voice the games, and the copyright issues would be "fun" to sort out as well...

Ikue Otani notwithstanding, of course.

Possibly one of the best things about the Direct! :blobwizard:

"Oh, so you liked the song?"

Song was alright, but those visuals! Especially the references! :psywoke: The video speaks for itself, though still have some things to say/note:

0:01-0:16: So, I don't think anyone was expecting a "Stand By Me" reference in a J-Rock MV. As R_N pointed out, and yes it was the same in the Japanese version (though I think other translations might have changed the movie), if you interact with the TV in your room in the Kanto games (and if you're a boy in FRLG) it's describes the iconic railroad track scene. (If you chose the girl in FRLG it's changed to a "The Wizard of Oz" reference)
0:27-0:37: Hey, GF, can we please get like a clean version of the Type Specialist montage without the filter and OCs in front of it?
0:44: Wait, for the villain silhouettes there's 9 Shadows there. It's easy enough to recognize Cyrus, Giovanni, Lusamine (or rather her hair), Ghetsis, Lysandre, and Colress. On the floor I can make out Maxie, but I can't figure out the other two. Well, I can guess one is Archie, maybe the shadow to the right of Maxie, but who's shadow is on the left? Guzma?
0:56: Really? All Alder and Iris get is a close up of them high-fiving each other?
2:15: Nice they included the Subway Bosses and the Chatelaines, but why not add the other Frontier Brains on the other billboards?

I've said that I'm not optimistic about the content of The Crown Tundra, but I'm getting kind of excited anyway. I guess I'm a sucker for a pretty snowscape with mysterious trees and legendaries. The Avalugg in the water in today's trailer really caught my eye too.

The most frustrating thing about Pokemon is that the basic formula is fun and gameplay has endless replay. Gamefreak can release more and more barren content and charge for it, but it's still pretty exciting to explore the Pokemon world. Probably one of the only thing 8th gen has improved upon is the general mobility of the player character. The amphibious bike and no HMs or random encounters assists greatly with this. All that's missing is a place to explore, and maybe Crown Tundra will succeed where SwSh badly failed.

I hate gen 8 and wasn't a fan of 7 but I'm still hesitantly optimistic about the future of the series as long as Gamefreak is willing to innovate instead of continuously cutting content. Maybe they'll relax the rushed release schedule of a game per year by breaking it up with cheap DLC to give main series games in the future the love and care they deserve.

Or maybe gen 9 will also be rushed garbage. Who knowwwwws.

Edit: 2:05 Is that Imposter Oak?

The art style just makes Oak look younger, though I do like the little details going on with that scene:
  • We of course have Professor Oak in the middle.
  • The two (current) female Professors to his right: Juniper and Sonia.
  • Behind them are the two elderly Professors: Magnolia and Rowan.
  • To Oak's left is Birch & Sycamore, the connection probably XY and ORAS being both Gen VI games.
  • And behind them the odd ones odd: Elm at first and then suddenly Kukui giving him a bro hug.
Though there is something which confuses me. Why does Sycamore have a confused face? When the Starters push them aside the Professors up front quickly change to a surprise expression, so is it an animation error they put him in his surprise face early?
