Pokemon Scarlet & Violet - 18th Nov 2022! **OFFICIAL INFO ONLY**

i love this i love this so much! iberia is an awesome place to base a region on, as a brazillian i feel more represented here than in any other pokémon region, even if portugal is a very small part of iberia, and my representation is by proxy because (shocker!) they colonized us! but still, there are still some references i can pick up, and that feels really cool! i think other continents could probably use more love (africa, central & south america, mainland asia, oceania, etc) but, whatever, i'm (biasedly) happy with this!

i looove loove love the starters, all three, but spirigatito more than quaxly and fuecoco the most, they're all incredibly cute and nicely designed. i have yet to play PLA so i have no clue how playing this will feel, but everyone i've talked to loved PLA, so if this is any improvement, i'm sure it will be the best mainline pokémon game! i'm hoping we get abilities and all the cut stuff from PLA back, and that this is actually open world as advertised! just really really looking forward to this :D

Crocodile in Spanish is "cocodrilo", because collective dyslexia I guess. So, that is an overreach. Horses, not zebras.
 
I’m hoping for Fire/Ground but I’m admittedly biased because I love Ramrupt and P Groudon (and am still sore about their removal) The Fire/Ghost idea would be cool if they hadn’t given us Neo Ty. Both types deffo have defensive perks and I could see it having good HP as well (Garagara) I just hope they don’t pull some weird Emboar crap and give it at least 1 respectable defense or maybe a good defensive HA like Incineroar.
 
Current theories of mine right now:

  • Seeing the birdlike design of the water starter it's may imply that it may be water flying at some point of the evolutionary line, but what if it stays like that for the whole line? Of pure speculation I think the final typings are going to be grass electric, fire ground and water flying. Fire ground could really fit with Fuecoco due to its lizardy design, while Sprigatito could be grass electric due to lynxs living energetic livestyles? Idk but it would be a really cool relationship between the typings of the starters.
  • Tones of red and purple are often associated with royalty, something that holds a huge place in spanish history. Could it be that once again the legendaries hold a royalty theme to them?
  • Pokemon Nsfw artists are not human, but even if they are their human rights should be put into question. How do you watch a direct where they present a 4 legged fox and your first thought is "yeah, time to draw a fuck ton of porn out of it." THE THING DOESN'T APPEAR FOR MORE THAN 15 SECONDS AND LIKE 10 MINUTES LATER THERE ARE ALREADY 10 FUCKING DRAWINGS WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK IS WRONG WITH YALL AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
 
In addition to those saying Quaxly will likely end up a Don Quixote reference (Quaxote is a legit cool name, man), I could easily see Feucoco’s evo’s incorporating “caliente” in its name. Alligator + Caliente?

“Alliente” incoming? “Alligente” alternatively? “Caliegator?” Something like that.

Honest answer is probably not likely or at the very least not as you expect it. No animal has 3 legs as evolution tends to lean toward simple bilateral symmetry. However some animals will sometimes used their tail as a supporting appendage (for both balance while moving and standing upright), maybe even "standing" on it in some rare occasions. Best examples are a Kangaroo, while jumping their tail lays flat in the air to keeps them balanced (though at that point it's not really being used as a leg), while standing their tail is laying on the ground (though more to rest it), BUT if it gets into a fight it can lean back and "stand" on its tail for a few seconds in order to deliver powerful kicks. Other animals who show this trait are Meerkats (though only to help them stand-up straight while on lookout), some species of birds, and a few bottle-dwelling fish. Honestly the kangaroo is probably your best bet as I don't think we'll see a Starter based on a meerkat anytime soon, if a Starter is based on a fish it'll probably be one more well-known/interesting (& sellable), and the birds who do this its a minor thing for so Pokemon probably wouldn't even include it in its design.

ANYWAY, from the way the small tidbits of the map we saw looks, Portugal will probably only be the towns/cities, routes, and locations along the western shore. So in terms of Pokemon that's probably 3 towns/cities and 3 or 4 Routes at least. So take all the most well known Portugal landmarks and expect to see them squished closer together possibly even sharing a a Town/City (or even a single location that references a few at the same time).

EDIT: OR, being there's this duel theme, notably represented by Oranges and Grapes, maybe they'll extend the Portugal part so that the peninsula is more 50/50, including more parts of Portugal while shrinking down or excluding non-notable parts of Spain. This idea came to mind after looking at the flags of both countries and see maybe potential for Legendary ideas.

Except, wouldn't another scientist at least tried to revive the Fossils with the normal method? It's a fan theory of mine, but I think it's very rare that there's fossils that are discovered to be revivable. With Earth having had been home to millions of speciess throughout its million years of supporting life, I'd imagine the Pokemon World would be similar. Yet, we've only have a handful of Fossil Pokemon when surely millions of fossilized species have been discovered. Not to mention if we can revive Pokemon from Fossils why is their Pokemon who are said to be endangered? I think it's because it's just a special trait a few rare species have that they can be revived, and this likely only after maybe enough information about the species has been discovered (who knows if there's more Fossils that can be revived yet there's just not enough info about them for scientists to do a successful resurrection).

And of course this is assuming the Pokemon has "normal" biology. As in is a complete physical creature without parts of it made of energy or some other hard-to-recreate matter (like liquid, goo, gas, etc.). Another theory I have is that the Galar Fossils are such Pokemon, their missing other half was some kind of energy form that can't be recreated even if you can successfully resurrect the other half. Cara Lass somehow discovered that combining the Fossils who bottom half were made of energy with Fossils who top half were energy resulted in the fusion of the physical parts (and possibly the energy once used to make their other half now being used as both a binding agent & life force to keep the abomination somehow alive). Of course, if you talk with Cara Liss and read the Dex entries she likely wrote, she has no idea this is probably what is going on and somehow came to the conclusion that, despite being able to mix-and-match the fossils, that these Pokemon totally existed in the past. I guess funny at the moment, though I do hope if they ever do bring back the Galar Fossils and give them another Dex entry it would be from a perspective of someone who knows what they're doing and being absolutely horrified (but also intrigued) that Galar Fossils can be fused together to form a Pokemon that by all accounts shouldn't be alive let alone exist.

Just learned this from Lockstin's latest video, Scarlet and Violet may be named so based on the colors of Spain's old flag (the Second Spanish Republic):

(Modern Spanish flag is pretty much the same but they replaced the purple violet with another stripe of red scarlet)

Also just want to point out two notable symbols on Spain's Coat of Arms in the middle there. First is the Castile, the small castle/tower structure, and the Leon, the lion. Won't get into their history, they both represent smaller kingdoms that eventually united to form what Spain is today. There's another flag of Spain which has an eagle but that one was used by a Spanish dictator so probably wouldn't be referencing that one. Also, not to leave them out, I checked our Portugal's flag:

The notable part of Portugal's flag is the two-part emblem. Its an armillary sphere (important symbol of Portugal, some may also know it as an astrolabe) covered by the Portuguese Shield (a lot of symbolism here, though to the plain eye you can tell right away it has shields and castles).

As you're probably guessing with me brining this up, I'm thinking maybe design theme of Legendaries? Yeah, we already had a Lion Legendary, but we've had plenty of dragons Legendary and lions are a common symbol so I don't think anyone would bat an eye at another as long as they make it look interesting (basing it on the Leon would help in that regard). However I'm interested in maybe them doing something with the armillary sphere/astrolabe and castles. Since both have castles on them, maybe have one Legendary based on Spain which is a Castle Lion King and the other based on Portugal's which is a Fortified Armillary Sphere Rooster (I looked up other national symbols and one of Portugal's is the Rooster of Barcelos). Hey, it's an idea. :blobshrug:

You don't see a lot of Fire-type tanks for a reason as Type Chart wise they're weak to common offense Types (Water, Ground & Rock) and there's no ideal secondary Type that neutralizes more than one of them (unless they want to use one of the other Starter Types which in that case Fire/Grass resist Water & Ground while Grass is super effective against Rock; though this will give it additional weaknesses to Flying & Poison, which attacking moves are less common then Water & Ground so there is that).

At this point I honestly don't know where the Starters will lean statwise, their designs are pretty ambiguous in that regard. Remoraid to head, I'd say Sprigatito would be Physical (say a nice fast "Leaf Blade" user (in quotes as it could get a Signature Move that's better)), Fuecoco a very slow mixed attacker with alright defenses, and Quaxly the speedster of the trio with a lean toward Special Attack.
 
None of the starters really grab me as of now. Donald Duck Jr. holds some promise.

Hoping for a conquistador inspired Pokemon. Maybe a El Cid one too. (OK, OK, we get it. You like medieval/Renaissance motifs)

Overall my reaction to Gen 9 being revealed can be summed up by the surprised Pikachu meme. BDSP and Legends Arceus had such a small release window between them that I was almost cynically expecting an announcement for Gen 9, but was surprised it actually happened. Sword and Shield was already three years ago, but neither Legends Arceus nor BDSP are even a year old yet so it really feels like there's no breathing room between games right now.

With all that being said, an open world mainline Pokémon game is something I've always wanted. Gen 1 has several gyms that can be done in any order and that's a part of why I still love them, but it seems more like an oversight than an intended feature. Legends Arceus also proved that exploring the world of Pokémon doesn't have to be limited to a grid and can be fun in its own right. If Scarlet and Violet can keep the best aspects of exploring the world and powering up your Pokémon in Legends Arceus without sacrificing the depth of competitive battling, I think they will be what finally rekindles my love for the series.

The starters are cute, but none of them won me over immediately. I guess Fuecoco does kind of look like an apple, and I think it would be very funny if it ended up evolving into yet another Fire/Fighting type, had apple-shaped boxing gloves for hands and was named something like Appulverizer.

As far as the story and setting go I have no idea what to expect, but I'll be cautiously optimistic for them. I don't need the greatest story in the world; "explore, get the eight badges, beat the Elite Four and get ready for competitive matches" is all the motivation I need. I do hope they'll bring back Megas, at least the ones that already exist!

I want to share my thoughts on the starters because they all somehow remind me of other things.


I don't need to point out Bubble Bobble. Everyone already made the connection. I haven't even played it and it was my first though about Fuecoco. I wasn't a fan at first but it doesn't take long for Pokemon to grow on me and It's a bit neater after having the chili pepper thing pointed out. Also, Fire Croc makes me think it'd like swimming in lava. Please tell me the final form does that. That'd be so cool! :D (I'm also jokingly hoping it gets a lava bubble move because of Bubble Bobble. Boiling magma?)

Quaxly is a blue bird, I didn't like him at first, it has a pose that might be a bit stuck up, and has an animal related name that ends in ly. As soon as I read the name, I thought of Berdly from Deltarune. It's a much looser connection, but I can't unthink it. Ane knowing how messed up the internet is, I'm sure there's already "art" of Quaxly with nipples that would rival Berdly's statue in cringyness, even it it wasn't already way more cringy because of the "nature" of the "art." I'm way too scared to ask for statue fan art...

I've already said Sprigatito looks like Unikitty from The Lego Movie and I'm glad I'm not the only one that sees it. The one thing I want most (other that not screwing the game up) is for Unikitty to learn Leech Seed. I want to, as Batman put it, "put the weird cat thing on stall." I know it's way too early to speculate on movesets, but the only Grass starter that can't learn Leech Seed is Rowlet so I think the odds are pretty good.

Not that I'd dislike Water Flying since it's proved to be a solid typing both offensively and defensively, but it feels a bit boring considering we already have a trillion of them and one of them (Pelipper) is basically the face of rain outside of Ubers.

For Fuecoco, honestly if he wasnt a starter i'd have 100% thought Grass/Fire as final typing. But it's a starter and I don't see them overlapping the FWG types. Anything else may be fair game though, and I'm personally on the Fire/Ground train myself.

Also literally no fucking clue what the cat will turn out being. Grass feline is a pretty weird association (since felines are usually carnivore thus don't really fit with the grass typing) so depends on what the final evo will be. Still #teamGrass anyway.

I'm super hopeful for a Fire/Grass Fuecoco final evolution. It's the big swing people have been suggesting about a chili-based grass type for a while now and it fits so well. Obviously doing that to a starter of all Pokemon is a little extreme, and would probably have to be mirrored by giving sprigatito water and quaxley fire just so the balance between the three of them isn't weirdly lopsided. The starters as a game design element usually teach a lot about type balance and that big a loop mid game might be odd for new players. Still, I think there are reasons Gamefreak might be interested in it. They seem to adore surprising players, and boy oh boy would making a cycle of starters where they share another starter's type certainly shake up the mold. I don't expect it, but then again, I didn't expect evolving legendary Pokemon either.

Here's hoping for Grass/Water Sprigatito3, Fire/Grass Fuecoco3, and Water/Fire Quaxley3!

The game just came out recently. Why even bother?
I heard people defending it by saying "You still have 8 month to enjoy it at least." but to me it comes off as if Legends Arceus is just filler not worth bothering by both fans and Gamefreak themselves. I don't know the reasoning but its baffling that they immediately bomb us with games.

With SwSh, while I didn't like the game, it seemed like after the release they are taking time with the games. Now we got like 3 new Pokemon games in 1 year related to the main series.

I'm more concerned with how Quaxley is not Water/Flying out of the ball. Rowlet get away with Grass/Flying just fine. Maybe they didn't want kids with Quaxley hard times with a Pikachu two routes away.
