i am living in new york and nobody understands my sense of humour here
Sorry, let me rephrase. I learnt a lot about the country itself. Like the education system, pay, health care etc.How so? From some rants from Deck Knight and ensuing debate? How can you accurately judge a country as massive and heterogeneous as the US from what a few people say on the internet? That's just as ignorant as what you probably think of the US.
British Columbia is a province, not a state. I didn't know you were moving up there!
The average NBA player gets paid about $5.8 million a year.
The average NFL player's salary is $1.8 million a year and a little less than half of the players in the league make under $1 million a year. Then factor in that the average career of an NFLer is about 3-4 years.
The average MLBer makes about $3.3 million a year. This number is most likely pulled higher because the lack of a salary cap allows marquee guys to have $160 million contracts and whatnot.
The average NHL player gets about $2.4 million a year.
I'd also like to add that they don't just "get out and play a game". The amount of time it takes to train to be an athlete at the professional level is enormous, and even if you do have all the time in the world to train, all the equipment necessary and the proper nutrition you're shit out of luck if another guy just as good as you comes along and is an inch taller. Or a half step faster. Or jumps an inch higher.
I understand you were most likely exaggerating, and yes athletes do make a ton of money for something that can't exactly be defined as a "job", but the amount of talent, dedication and luck needed to get to that level is vast. Also take into account the amount of money these players are generating for their team owners in terms of jersey sales, tickets, stadium concessions, random memorabilia, I think they're getting a decent cut of the profits.
America's history of prejudice and bigotry is one of the greatest stains that mars the greatness that this country could possess, and to ignore that is simple denial, and makes you no better than those who would hate America for no other reason than that they do not live here.
Awesome, good for youI do not give a fuck if people love America,
How is it a social stain to proudly say you love America? Actually, who is determining this? Your opinion? or is there an example of this I can read on people proudly loving your country becoming a social stain on your life?I give a fuck if they promote it with some irrational exuberance and it becomes a social stain on your life
I don't think you are making a complete sentence here, try again and maybe i could understand better. In reference to the Patriot act, i agree some things meant to protect us that are enacted are unconstitutional and infringing on our rights, but you have to you can't overlook the fact that there have been no successful terrorist attacks on America since then.if you are not patriotic, when being irrationally patriotic is far more of a cancer on our country and our foreign policy. (That does not mean treason laws are wrong, but the Patriot Act is as a matter of fact blatantly unconstitutional and violates basic human rights/dignity/et cetera).
no, i mean the ones that subscribe to liberal philosophy, much like i subscribe to its counterpart "Conservative Philosophy"Liberal smogonites? Do you mean people who dislike being surrounded by crassly unreasonable, deeply rooted bigotry that stems only from ignorance and hate?
no.I guess that must make a lot of nice people on either political side "liberal'
I agree. I abhor hatred of people who are homosexual. That doesn't stop me from abhorring the act of.If anyone wants to make a gay person feel "small" for being gay, then that person is a total fucking joke.
It's disgusting that anyone gets bullied for any reason. What makes gays so special? they're just as human as the rest of us.That it happens on a widespread basis, that gays are bullied far more frequently, is sheerly disgusting and is a reason that the United States is much less enjoyable than it could be.
why?It is just the group that gets the most attention though
I find all of this gross. However i think way too many people give a crap about racism. I hold the sentiment that if people stopped caring about one's skin color, or worrying their collective butts off about other people being racist when worrying really isn't necessary because there was no crime committed in terms of racism, racism wouldn't be a problem...Jew bashing, a gross amount of sexism, a gross amount of black versus white resentment, et cetera all stain this nation more than many others, as well as less than many others.
wait what.imo, i find it sad that that type of group is more mainstream in the bashing it receives than actual ethnic groups,
Double wait what?I find all of this gross. However i think way too many people give a crap about this, especially the people who don't have genetically white skin.Jew bashing, a gross amount of sexism, a gross amount of black versus white resentment, et cetera all stain this nation more than many others, as well as less than many others.
Are you seriously defending athletes? Sure playing sports is fun, and it's occasionally fun to watch other people play sports, but there is no good reason for athletes to be paid incredible amounts more than professions that actually matter like doctors and teachers or professors.
The amount that athletes get paid is absurd and undeserved. Of course they generate a lot of money, but I think that athletes and other professions that are way overpaid like actors should get some of the money that they generate, while a certain amount should go to the government or professions that we actually need like I mentioned before. But no, they are almost all greedy sons of bitches and need it all for themselves
In reference to the Patriot act, i agree some things meant to protect us that are enacted are unconstitutional and infringing on our rights, but you have to you can't overlook the fact that there have been no successful terrorist attacks on America since then.
After Hurricane Katrina President Bush kept our cities safe.
In the three years and a half years since Hurricane Katrina not a single American city has been destroyed or partially destroyed. There are more than 10,000 cities in the United States and because of George Bush every single one of them, except for New Orleans, is still largely intact. Of course, no one could have predicted Hurricane Katrina, and if President Clinton had not left us so woefully unprepared, New Orleans would probably be in a lot better shape than it is now. But since Katrina, there have been numerous hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, blizzards, fires and earthquakes and none of them has gotten out of hand and wiped out an entire city because of the disaster preparedness policies President Bush put in place. For national security reasons we may not know until records are declassified how many other potential disasters, like epidemics or nuclear power plant meltdowns or alien invasions, were averted because of the work that government agencies did behind the scenes. Unfortunately, Presidents don't usually get credit for all the disasters that don't happen. But I think we should congratulate the President for doing a heckuva job on keeping America safe in the years since Katrina.
Jonathan Swift 1667-1745ahahahaha
this reminded me very strongly of that jon swift article where he argues that bush was a great president because there are over ten thousand cities in the united states and he only completely destroyed one of them
???wait what.
EDIT:
Double wait what?
Liking America isn't the social stain, I'm pretty sure he was referring to people like Deck Knight who trumpet "America is the best and most awesome nation ever" line and then go on to ignore statistics that would show that might not be the case. You know, people who praise the free market and our wonderful health care innovations without realizing our research is so advanced because of government subsidies to pharmaceutical industries (while American citizens are going bankrupt every day because of treatable health problems). That kind of blind faith and anti-intellectualism is a social stain.Awesome, good for you How is it a social stain to proudly say you love America? Actually, who is determining this? Your opinion? or is there an example of this I can read on people proudly loving your country becoming a social stain on your life?
ROFL. This can't be a serious post. Thank you for highlighting the social stain that CK was talking about earlier. In reference to the Patriot act, i agree some things meant to protect us that are enacted are unconstitutional and infringing on our rights, but you have to you can't overlook the fact that there have been no successful terrorist attacks on America since then.
I agree with most of what you said in this part about race and bullying, but the reason why gays are "special" these days is because there are laws being proposed and passed every day specifically designed to undermine homosexuals - you don't see politicians trying to outlaw interracial marriage anymore, but you do see them trying to outlaw gay marriage. Nobody is saying that gays are more special than any other group in terms of discrimination faced, it's just a more relevant topic. It's disgusting that anyone gets bullied for any reason. What makes gays so special?
Yeah.. I hate celebrities, and athletes as well. I don't know why someone gets payed $50 mil to get out and play a game. That's utterly ridiculous to me.
I don't know how to respond to this. However i think way too many people give a crap about racism, especially the people who don't have white skin.
Referring to them as products is perfect - I wish I thought of that =\Athletes and Actors are products like any other employee. That's how valuable they are to the people who produce the shows (be it an NHL game or The Dark Knight).
hahahaha, oh my, I didn't even catch that. Thanks for pointing it out, you just made my day brighter.I don't know how to respond to this.
How is it a social stain to proudly say you love America? I said the opposite I am not sure why you read it wrong- I don't think you are making a complete sentence here, try again and maybe i could understand better. oh you gave up on the sentence where you cut off then claimed I stated the exact opposite of what I actually said in the next four incredibly difficult to read words In reference to the Patriot act, i agree some things meant to protect us that are enacted are unconstitutional and infringing on our rights, but you have to you can't overlook the fact that there have been no successful terrorist attacks on America since then. yes I can, I think there are a lot scarier criminal problems (like rape) that deserve a lot more prevention; I would like my rights either way
I abhor hatred of people who are homosexual. That doesn't stop me from abhorring the act of. how does this not mean you abhor the homosexuals? you abhor such a large part of their life that you at least what 10% hate the actual person? you can pick the % I do not really care It's disgusting that anyone gets bullied for any reason. What makes gays so special? I was responding to a point where it was needlessly picked out that it is ridiculous to cite gay hate as a top reason, but we already established you are not trying to keep up. they're just as human as the rest of us. imo, i find it sad that that type of group is more mainstream in the bashing it receives than actual ethnic groups, I find all of this gross. However i think way too many people give a crap about racism, what????? especially the people who don't have white skin. I hold the sentiment that if people stopped caring about one's skin color, or worrying their collective butts off about other people being racist when worrying really isn't necessary because there was no crime committed in terms of racism, racism wouldn't be a problem...pretty sure this is culturally unlikely
After looking at the posts, you're definitely right about that. I wish I referred more to your post instead of trying to respond to jman's...I might be a little more sane at the moment if I had.jrr you took j-man's mistake and ran with it, I was saying that one of the strongest proofs that patriotism is a fucking shameless horror is how it becomes a stain on your "record" to be "proven not patriotic"
He mentioned teaching kids in CCD in another post, which is why I thought it applied. Teaching kids something as serious as religion while preaching that they aren't ready to learn about their own bodies in sex ed came across as ridiculous to me.Deck Knight is a social annoyance, not in any way a stain as far as I know; it takes things like brainwashing children into hating homosexuals before you are getting to a stain level.
I thought that was hilarious too. "There wouldn't even BE racism if other races didn't keep bringing it up when they get treated badly!"...classic strategy. Out of sight, out of mind. That always solves the problem. At least I got a lovely new sig out of it :DI kind of get what he means about racism (I think): he thinks that those who are not white (i.e. all those persecuted, since whites basically never are persecuted) should learn to live with it, since that will make it go away when they stop making a big deal of it. Of course, this phrasing does not make it much better.
