Thanks to everyone for their supportive words, I love doing this and it feels great to be recognized for it (getting paid is nice too, so it's nice that I do).
Asma, although I learned the basics of animation from watching cartoons frame by frame on my old VHS tapes, where I REALLY made progress was when I started observing how people and animals move directly. No matter how fantastic the person, animal, machine or Pokemon you're animating, they all have some basis in reality. If you have a strong foundation of knowledge as to how things move, you'll be able to build upon them more confidently from your imagination. You can then apply squash/stretch, anticipation, etc... as liberally or as conservatively as you think the situation needs.
That said, there's still tons to be learned from watching animation you like closely. I've frame by framed all the awesome scenes from FLCL at least three times.
