Best Movie of 2009?

Another year has gone by. Imo, they were a number of solid movies this year (Transformers, Angels and Demons, Harry Potter 6 etc).

But overall i gotta say Avatar was my favorite movie of the year. I saw it yesterday on IMAX 3D and was completely compelled into the movie. Thought the story was great, and the special effects were awesome.

What about you guys, what do you think was the best movie of 2009?

I agree, avatar was amazing, it was pretty cool how more than half of the movie was CGI but it still looked so realistic.

seriously the weakest year of the 00s, i don't even like the first two movies that much

I really liked District 9. There was a hell of a lot that was wrong with it, but Wikus was probably the best action movie character since the Joker..

Zombieland also was also a good movie.

Angels and Demons I managed to watch the first four minutes before leaving. Maybe it got a lot better, but I highly doubt it.

And I still havent seen inglorious basterds, fantastic mr fox or where the wild things are and I would quite like to.

Have a nice day.

I think I would have enjoyed Avatar more if I didn't see it in my shitty IMAX theatre which I'm pretty sure isn't a real IMAX =(

I loved Terminator Salvation. Absolutely amazing. I have yet to see Avatar... but I've heard good things about it.

Just watched Up last week, and it's one of the cutest Disney movies I've ever seen. The entire family actually watched it... and my family is addicted to sci-fi and horror movies, so that's saying something.

What's wrong with science world =O

Anyways, I didn't get to see too many movies but I did like District 9 and Terminator.

I went to Richmond. Science World has an amazing IMAX but they don't show feature movies. Only their 30 minute or so educational productions. Such a waste of such a beautiful screen. Richmond's is pathetic. It's one of those regular theatres where they just draw back the curtain and make you sit closer to the front. Ugh. Wish I saw it at Metro with a larger theatre and marginally smaller screen so I could get a better seat.

This thread makes me realize I've barely paid attention to new movies this year.

Nothing compelled me to go to the theatres.

I thought District 9 was terrible although I got it off the net. Couldnt make it to the end.

Given that I'm a bit bored right now, I may as well summarize my verdict on the films I remember seeing this year:

EPIC!

Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus

Great

Watchmen
Zombieland
The Hangover
Up
District 9
Inglourious Bastards
Mesrine I & II
Coraline
In The Loop

Good

Star Trek
Where The Wild Things Are
Antichrist
Avatar
Taken
Fantastic Mr Fox
State Of Play
Drag Me To Hell
Moon
The Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus
Funny People
Adventureland
The Hurt Locker
I Love You, Man
Sunshine Cleaning

Disappointing

The Invention Of Lying
The Men Who Stare at Goats
A Christmas Carol
Angels And Demons
Monsters vs. Aliens
Public Enemies
Bruno
Cold Souls
Harry Brown
Night At The Museum 2
(500) Days of Summer
The Time Traveller’s Wife
Terminator Salvation

Awful

Year One
Paul Blart: Mall Cop
Anything For Her

I guess I'm a bit less picky than most people on this forum, but there are several films people have expressed their hate for that I never fancied seeing in the first place.

My favorite movies this year are definitely Up and District 9. I really loved District 9, but good lord, it had the flattest dialouge at times. Up was fantastic, but I couldn't help but feel a bit empty after the movie.

Star Trek, Coraline, and Watchmen were all pretty decent. Watchmen had some really, really bad choices in it (the size of Manhatten's schlong, the weird ending, and the awful sex scene), but it made up for it for keeping really close to the book whenever it wasn't 5 miles away.

But without a doubt, Transformers 2 was the worst movie I've seen this year. How giant robot fights ever got boring, I'll never know (Maybe it has to do with stuffing the movie full of bad acting, voice acting, plot and crude humor).

District 9, Zombieland, Inglorious Basterds, Drag Me to Hell and Coraline. I really can't decide between those five movies. I still have yet to see Avatar and Sherlock Holmes.

I also have to see the Hurt Locker if I can find a showing, or get it on dvd later.

Best adult/action/drama movie - Inglorious Basterds
Best effects - Avatar
Best family movie - Up
Best comedy - The Hangover

best movie overall - Inglorious Basterds

yeah

This year was pretty meh. Up, Star Trek, and Zombieland were the only decent movies that I saw.

Watchmen and Harry Potter 6 both suffered from trying to cram too much into a short period of time and leaving out/changing important details.

Transformers 2 was crap and regret paying money for it.

GI Joe however was surprisingly good. I expected nothing from it but it turned out to be decent. Not at the Level of Up or Star Trek, but not as bad as Watchmen

Inglorious Basterds and Avatar are my favorites of the year so far. I really like how Tarantino finally made a movie with a great plot AND great dialogue! (Most of his movies suffer from lack of plot.)

Avatar was just fucking brilliant. The plight of aliens has never almost made me cry before, so props for that. The movie just managed to combine almost every element of a great film possible. It had great fighting sequences, an amazing plot, and a love story that really immersed you. The only thing it suffered from was shit acting at certain parts.

An honorable mention is Up. Holy shit Pixar, you made a masterpiece again. How do you crank these out?

My favourite was Taking of Pelham 123, Washington and Travolta just... worked. Was excellent imo.
Saw Up as well, that was great, nearly had me crying :(
GI Joe was only made passable by my mate's jokes all the way through, I despised it otherwise.

But God damn, oh God, Transformers 2 was the worst thing I've ever seen. The humour was none existent and the action was few and far between. Upsetting and I want my money back.

In short, The Taking of Pelham 123 was best.

I'm surprised no-one else has mentioned 2012. It's not remotely good - some of the action scenes are so over the top that I was literally laughing in the cinema. But given people are mentioning bad movies, did no-one else see this?
I can't wait for Intuitor's Bad Movie Physics to get onto it. I think it has a good chance of outdoing The Core for scientific wrongness.

Wow, lots of varying attitudes here.

Coraline
inglorious basterds
The Hangover
Avatar
Zombieland

All great movies. A few of them lacked in certain areas but excelled in others.

The Executive Committee
Inglorious Basterds
The Hangover

Better than Expected
The Men who Stare at Goats
The Blind Side
Ninja Assassin

Mediocre
Bruno
Taken
Avatar

Worse than Expected
Transformers
Harry Potter 6

Can't even make it through

District 9
Watchmen

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Paranormal Activity. I didn't see it but my friends saw it... in talking to most people it was either really good or just terrible.

this was a pretty shitty year for new realeases. I'm probably gonna wait for the oscar Nom's to come out before i start actually paying attention and watching movies. There are just so many bad movies out this year that I can;t spend all my time seraching for good ones.

For example, last year I woudl say the best movie to come out was the wrestler. It had great acting, an original story, a powerful theme and perfect ending.

I honestly cannot say that there is a SINGLE movie that has come out in 2009 that is even remotely as good of a movie as the wrestler. Sure, the hangover or avatar may be just as entertaining, but those two do not leave you with the same sense of satisfaction that the wrestler does.
