CAP 9 CAP 9 - Sprite Submissions

First of all, I find his head a little too much of a cubical shape in comparison to Cyzir's original art. You can vastly improve this sprite by going in and making the head a little rounder.
On the contrary, I believe this cubical style is what makes it seem like a whale, not a huge sand worm. Its the noticable angles that create the illusion of it looking "down" on you, not "at" you.

Of course I totally agree with you about his work. Cartoons, i'm sure you've heard this millions of times, but your work is amazing.

Keep the black drills. They win. Of course, color choice is awkward. They say black goes well with all colors, but i'm doubting that first shiny. Try it with other color combinations and see if that helps.

Chaoscrippler's sprite has my interest too. :>

another repose... hmmmmm

edit: still a WIP by the way

@Cartoons!: I think the middle shiny is the best one, although I do like the black drill from the first one... Maybe a black drill on the blue one?

Chaos and Taicho, I love your entries! However, they both seem much to green. Try giving a color scheme closer to Cartoons, and I think that your sprites will improve dramatically!

I completed the shading, base coloring, and details on my front sprite. I still haven't consolidated all the stray colors yet. But this should be getting close to complete for the front sprite.

I really like it! I guess I can add yours to the ones I'm torn between.:p
Still, few of the sprites here really capture its speed. I guess we'll have to add "Much faster than it looks" to its Pokedex entry.

... you know, yours and Cartoons' actually look like they could be two frames in an animated sprite.

Doug and taicho, can you please upload your sprites to photobucket or tinypic so I can see them?

Also here's my front sprite so far:

Thanks, everyone, for you comments. I'm trying to strike a balance between some of the critiques I've been getting while trying to get across my own vision of the sprite. I'll keep the colors as they were originally, and will take a look at the shading on the arm.

In the meantime, here are the male and female juxtaposed beside each other, some possible shinies, and a backsprite.

So far, yours is probably my favorite design Cartoons!, followed closely in second by KoA's. While I think the front sprites are perfect, I don't really like the back sprite that much. The little slip of eye at on the side seems to be thrown on so as to make it seem like he does have a face from the back, while arch of the back doesn't really fit the 'squarish' appearance of the front sprite. The second one is really minor, however, as it is more my aesthetic opinion more than any issue with the sprite.

As for the shinies, I'm going with the third one. I feel the one on the far right is the best of the trio, and it still retains the same feel as the base coloring scheme. The first one is just... well, weird. It looks like a rainbow threw up on your sprite. The second one is better, but I prefer the red as the blue shiny makes it feel more Water-typed than Dark or Ground.

My only other issue is the eye. While others may have passed over it, it irks me whenever I see it. To me, the eye doesn't portray a sense of 'badassness' or even 'pride'. I don't even see 'Amusement' really. In all honesty, it seems a bit slow. Like the eyelid is drooping over the eye, and in conjunction with the side grin on the face, it gives off a vibe of dim-wittedness.

I completed the shading, base coloring, and details on my front sprite. I still haven't consolidated all the stray colors yet. But this should be getting close to complete for the front sprite.

I still love it Doug. It shows off his aggressive nature quite nicely, but without making him 'the ultimate badass', something I know you were trying to do with this CAP. The only thing I find odd about the sprite, as a whole, would be the "flab" underneath his jaw. I call it that, because I have no idea what else it could be. It makes him look like he has a double chin, to my eyes, and I don't think this really shows 'Fat ass HP stat' so much as 'Fat ass period'. Then again, that is just my opinion.

@KoA I didn't even bother quoting yours, as I find nothing wrong with it. I'd say you are living up to the expectations I have lain upon you, and you should proceed to the back sprite with all due haste! In a more serious note, however, I think you did finally nail that back color. The green you have chosen is easy on the eyes while not being putrid.

EDIT: I also forgot to mention that, so far, I am loving all the contributions to this CAP. I love how everyone is giving it such dynamic posing and shading to really show off what it is all about. I have always preferred the sprites from RBY and GSC for their posing and ability to show off what the Pokemon were really supposed to be. The newer sprites (Yes, I'm looking at you HGSS) are utter crap compared to the elder generations. This is why I'm glad to see such a blocky sprite mixed with great coloring and even better shading for this project. Kudos to all the artists!

There are some really great sprites going around! I'm just gonna list a few of my favorites:

Aragornbird
: I really like the sprite. Just the entire thing about it seemingly rising out of the ground, instead of just sitting there makes it seem very dynamic. Definitely my favorite.

pkmn-taicho321
: I really like that sprite as well. It shows the aggresion of the Pokemon nicely, as well as adding an element of cheekiness to it that make it very expressive, IMO. My only problems are that in some areas the sprite is too blocky, and that the brown could be a little darker.

DougJustDoug
: I like that pose as well, because it makes it look very menacing and powerful. The only problem is that the forehead seems too massive; maybe you could move the eyes up a bit or something.

That's just a rundown of some of my favorites, but I have to say all of these sprites are amazing. I look forward to seeing what some of the finished submissions are going to look like.

Cartoons!: Please don't make it less cubical, it's part of what makes it so amazing. I like the concept of black drills for the shiny, and I think if you add that to the other shinies they would look a lot better. Also, the backsprite is lovely.

Aragornbird: I like it... except for one thing. The eye. It just seems... small and misplaced. In a sprite like Cartoons!, the small eye works, but in your case it only looks odd. Loving the rest of the sprite though.

pkmn-taicho321: That's actually very interesting and different. I like the shiny and I like what you did with the arms. It is pretty blocky, but again, it kind of works. However, it looks nothing like a pokemon sprite, at all. I still like it, though.

Wyverii: I usually love your work, but your sprite doesn't stand out. It's good, but doesn't have any "wow"-factor. Your backsprite is great, though.

DougJustDoug: Well, it's different... but I'm not liking the position of the drill and the enormous upper jaw. But some people do, I guess.

Chaoscrippler: Heh, I really like this one. The backsprite works well with the front sprite (Although the drills on the backsprite seem a bit off). The sand is a nice effect.

KoA: It's looking better. I really like it. I don't know that you could change much to improve it.

Well, top 3 for me right now are Cartoons!, KoA and Chaoscrippler, in that order. I could see any of those sprites as a winner now.

aragonbird: That thing looks like it's going to eat me. Love how it rises out of the ground. I wonder how tall it's going to be because if yours wins I can see it being 10 meters tall.
Cartoons!: Yours looks like it's waiting for the perfect moment to strike. Looks more bulky than most of the others (aragonbird's looks more offensive) and the third shiny is the best one. The only problem is it doesn't look like it could learn Superpower.

I completed the shading, base coloring, and details on my front sprite. I still haven't consolidated all the stray colors yet. But this should be getting close to complete for the front sprite.

I like this sprite, but I think the mouth is a bit too wide. It looks really angry as opposed to just pissed off/cocky.

Please give me your opinions and critiques.

th_CAP9nodithering-1.png

I like it, and I think the upper portion of it is excellent. The tails seems off to me. Mr. Blubbers is supposed to be huge in the front, thinning out to it's tail. Yours seems almost uniform in length because of the way the tail is positioned and sized.

Otherwise, you've shown why you are one of the top spriters in the spriting thread, Canti. I'd say drawing it above ground is a lot harder than below, and you made it turn out very nicely.

Okay, here's the fabled lineart for my sprite, which is up for criticism. Basic idea came from one of my ideas of how a whale emerges from Water, so I tried to embody that in this pose. The red areas are, of course, where the scars are prob. going to be. So, yeah, tell me how you guys like it.

NARBRAWL.png

@Canti: Looks good to me right off the bat. The two things I have against it is 1. The scar color could be a little more ditinct, and 2. The outline is pure Black. It would look better if you used the Base Outline shade for the outline in addition to Black. Looks good otherwise.

Please give me your opinions and critiques.

th_CAP9nodithering-1.png
I agree with Raiziken, above ground does seem to be a harder attempt than below, and you have obviously made a valiant effort. I really like the shading around the arm and your horn positioning is nice. However, the uniform size from head to tail does make it a bit "hot-doggy" and this is only more apparent with your mouth blending in with the sand so much (which I can see being intentional, but still). Otherwise, good work.

Here's another set of comments for you guys:

@ pkmn-taicho: I really like the posing of your latest sprite. It's dynamic enough that the spite is not boring (not that any of the other sprites here are), but is, at the same time, not so dynamic that it is inconssistant with the official sprites from the games. I think you have hit the balance if that aspect in the noggin.

However, I would like to say that while the cubic shape will be helpful for making it look like a whale rather than a worm or something like that, that head is WAY too cubic to be conssistant with the original artwork. I would suggest curving the angles to remedy the problem.

Also, I am not sure that I am liking the shade of colors you are using. Perhaps you could try going in and making the colors more like the colors used on the other sprites that have been presented to us here.

@ Doug-Just-Doug: I'm going to have to agree that this sprite gives off more of a "dark-type" vibe than the majority of the others presented to us here. It looks like this guy wants to bring the pain to whoever gave him his scars... either that, or just take out his rage on the opponent.

Just as a quick suggestion, could you do a little more shading on the belly- kinda like Wyverii's belly shading? I think you would get a better looking sprite that way.

@ XandZero2: I really like the idea of the narwhale bursting out from the ground just like a whale comming out of the water for air. I certianly would like to see this one colored before I can say anything further about it, though.

Again, remember that my suggestions are just suggestions. Either way, good luck to all who have submitted sprites. May the best spriter win!

I made the eye bigger so it looks more like the original art. Also made the dirt mound slightly bigger. Hope the colors are all right.
Will work on the shiny versions tomorrow

Still can't see Doug's sprite. :[

Chaoscrippler's is my favorite so far. Excelent pose [The only dynamic pose IMO, the others are too static (like HGSS sprites)]. Don't put the arm/fin in the backsprite!

Cartoons!' looks very good, and his backsprite is the better so far. But, I don't like his shiny.

Doug's looks ok, but I don't like the eyes [I prefer the Artwork Eyes]

My Sprites so far:

In descending order: Male Front, Female Front, Male Back, Female back (females have shorter drill...horn...things)

Shinies are in second column (standard bright blue) - third column are those without any drills at all.

Any comments?
