just got a wii

I've had a lot of fun with both Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2, that might be worth your while

I know it's a pokemon game but don't get battle revolution. It sucks. I recommend super Mario galaxy 2.

And lol pwnemon I thought force unleashed for xbox was good, but it was so awful for wii.

SSBB, New Super Mario Bros Wii, Monster Hunter Tri (hours and hours of fun), Mario Kart Wii, Resident Evil 4, Legend of Zelda TP, Skyward Sword, both Mario Galaxy, Metroid Trilogy, Fire Emblem, Animal Crossing and the list goes on..

If you're into the CoD games, then I recommend 007. It practically is CoD with Daniel Craig's face.

Other recommendations are Zeldas, DKCR, Mario Kart, Mario Galaxies, Paper Mario, and Brawl (How original I know lol).

Sonic Colors is one of the better third party games for the Wii, I highly recommend it. Aside from that, I'll echo what others have said, Brawl, Galaxy 2, Skyward Sword etc. are must-haves.

when i had a wii i had:

super paper mario (recommend)
NSMB wii (recommend)
SMG 1/2 (RECOMMEND!!)
twilight princess (recommend)
brawl (recommend)
mario kart (recommend)
sin/punishment star successor (hidden gem, recommend)

i recommend all the games i have lol (i only had a few games, spent my money wisely).

also, for a list of top rated wii games, look here

Buy:
Brawl
Twilight Princess
Skyward Sword (haven't done a play through yet although its apparently great)
Mario Kart Wii (pretty good online play if you're going to do that)
Metroid Prime 3
Donkey Kong Country Returns
Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2
Resident Evil 4
New Super Mario Bros. Wii

Rent:
Kirby Return to Dreamland (decent but good only for one play through)
Sonic Colors (best sonic game to come out since sonic and knuckles)
Wii sports Resort (its buy able but only if you plan on playing it a fuckload with others)

Download:
Anything Legend of Zelda
Mega Man (the recent one ((10 I think it was called?)) was apparently pretty good, might check that out)
Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars (paper mario basically except harder somewhat)
My Pokemon Ranch ( if you want the free Mew but its hard to get; you have to upload 999 pokemon using just diamond and Pearl. other than that its useless)

Don't ever get near:

all Shovelware (carnival games, multiplayer "party" bull, etc.etc)
Wii Music (a waste of time, literally)
PBR (its terrible. only useful for the items and the event pokemon, which you cant transfer to gen.5 anyway)
Anything Raving Rabbids
ANY sports games, EA ones for sure (All Maddens from 10 onward are unplayable due to fucking GOD AWFUL player design and shitty textures. Half the original madden modes are gone and you cant edit the players. Almost every EA Sports game is like this on the Wii. I don;t think FIFA is, though... I'm not sure.)

Darkie, you like basketball, right? I bought NBA 2k10 for the wii and it is absolutely terrible. 2k11 is much better and is actually my current favorite still. And you still have JJ, Caron, Tyson, and Deshawn on the mavs. I haven't played '12 yet but from what I heard its pretty good. Its probably not worth the money if you have 11 since it probably isn't $50 better than '11

i'll give you 3 ref and a pair of buds.

?_? i have no idea what this means

THANK YOU this was basically exactly the post I was looking for!

I have 2k12 on for the 360 and I play it all the time!

Thanks everyone for all the posts! I did look at that thread Snorlaxe made in December, but that thread was really more about the more niche games whereas I just needed some advice to get started. I also did look at the lists on google, but I figured my tastes would be more in line with the people of Smogon (and I also didn't find anything about my controller dilemma)!

I think I will start off with Brawl and Twilight Princess and then eventually add Mario Kart, Galaxy 2, and DKCR before branching off into the more niche games. Mostly I want the games that are fun to play with a couple people over, but the Zelda series will always have my heart.

I went ahead and ordered 2 gamecube controllers for cheap on Amazon. Should I also get a second nunchuck to match my second wiimote (the bundle came with 2 wiimotes and 1 nunchuck)?

*Plays brawl with a wiimote + nunchuck and can do all of the advanced techniques one can do on a gamecube/classis controller save for the useless fire bound technique*

You don't need a GC controller if you weren't big on melee.

Remember to pick up Brawl anyways so you can play Project M when its released.

In a million years, most likely.

These are in my opinion the must own games on the Wii

Zelda: Twilight Princess
Zelda: Skyward Sword
Super Mario Galaxy
Super Mario Galaxy 2
New Super Mario Bros. Wii
Mario Kart Wii
Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Metroid Prime Trilogy/Metroid Prime 3 (Depending on how easy it is for you to find Trilogy)
Donkey Kong Country Returns

Also I personally haven't played these games but I've heard that they're very good as well:

Monster Hunter Tri
Xenoblade Chronicles

Get Twilight Princess for Gamecube if you can. Unlike Skyward Sword, the Wii controls are horrible in TP and more of a gimmick than an actual controller.

my only big complaint about zelda: twilight princess when i played it was the wii controls -- they are fuck retarded. definitely get the gamecube version.

You're really late but oh well. The Wii remote sucks ass, always use a GameCube controller if possible. Games:
*House of the Dead is fun but the Wii remote sucks ass
*Brawl is fun if you have a GameCube controller
*Twilight Princess is awesome but the Wii remote sucks ass
*Kirby's Epic Yarn is sweet and actually utlizes the Wii remote well
And those are the only games that interest me really, Wii doesn't have much to offer

Xenoblade Chronicles. If you're in the US, either wait two months, or import it. Otherwise, get it ASAP. I put over 100 hours into it, and enjoyed every minute.

May as well list why it's a good game:
  • Awesome huge environments
  • Amazing music
  • Likeable characters
  • Fun to play
  • Great British voice acting
  • Mechs
  • Riki

You can try Monster Hunter Tri (the only reason I have Wii)...

and yup, 2k12 is great! i'm playing it on any consoles i have (pc, xbox360 and psp, except...wii)

I wouldn't bother getting metroid prime 3 when the entire trilogy has been released on one disk. I'd also suggest getting Metroid: Other M for wii, Super Paper Mario, and 007:Goldeneye too.

In terms of wiiware and virtual console, world of goo, chrono trigger, legend of zelda majora's mask, LOZ OOT, Final Fantasy 3 and more.

i'd get the nunchuck for sure, i'm sure some of your bros are used to the Brawl controls over melee, plus in a lot of games there aren't gc controls but they can have multiplayer (eg Galaxy 2)

Why has nobody suggested Punch-Out!!? It's a blast, but in all honesty, doens't have much replay value; maybe five-six hours in total, depending on your skill? It took me around ten, but I'm terrible at games like this. P.S.: Glass Joe rematch WILL kick your ass at least once. Don't hang your head in shame; the game just starts getting really really badass starting around the end of the World Circuit as a challenger.

Also, Nintendo Power is God. If a game has been rated 9.0 or up, and you haven't heard of it, PLAY IT. Best place to find cult hits, ever. It's how I discovered TWEWY and Mega Man 9; 'nuff said.

Oh man, you have to get Monster Hunter Tri. Skyward Sword's really cool too. Donkey Kong Country Returns, yadayada, all that good stuff. The Star Wars Force Unleashed games are pretty cool too. Metroid Prime Trilogy is pretty sweet, man. Muramasa is a good side scrolling game. Okami is awesome. The No More Heroes games are really really good too. Dead Space and RE4 are so good, shooting shit up like there's no tomorrow.

And Brawl isn't garbage, it's still good. The problem is finding anyone to Brawl, but I just go on it to beat up Taunt Party people when I don't feel like "Taunting". You can still go to AllisBrawl.com, that's a great website for Brawl.

This. Punch-Out is an excellent game.
