Little things you like about Pokémon

This is made even better by the fact Pokétch comes with a free Calculator, so the player could cheat the questions at any given time without consequence and yet still gets it wrong

One of the trainers who asks if you're doing it on purpose does make mention of the Calculator app on the Poketch. :bloblul:

Hearthome Gym Trainer: Lulz, are you failing on purpose or can't you do math on a calculator?
Player: Oh, I'm sorry that the game makers forgot to put a freakin' Drifloon ANYWHERE else in the game aside one of your stupid optional battles so, if I missed a Friday and need to see one, I got to wait a few days and hopefully remember to do it otherwise gotta wait another week. Also why should I give up the experience?

Fun little story: Twitch Streamer Mitchell “MitchOG” Versari was soft resetting for a Shiny Turtwig when the unexpected happen:

https://clips.twitch.tv/CovertHumbleKangarooSwiftRage-dyJQPxXTnNdRQLJd

The reaction was priceless, going from annoyed upset seeing that the uncatchable Starly was Shiny, and then to speechless amazement when his Turtwig also turned out to be Shiny! The chance of this happening is 1 out of 16,777,216, and from what it looks like Versari is the only one who has encountered, at the very least recorded, this specific occurrence happening.

Merry F***ing Christmas indeed.

Are we sure those are the odds? I'm not saying the math is wrong, I'm wondering if there's something going on with the RNG. Both Turtwig and the Wild are generated at the same time, it'd make much more sense that they're both shiny because they pull from the same RNG value vs someone nailing a 1-in-17 million shot.

From my understanding of RNG in video games, the RNG seed changes every time it's called. So no, they're probably not using the same RNG value.

People have soft reset for the starter before and there are cases where the Starter was Shiny OR the Starly was Shiny. So, as DrPumpkinz said, they're not using the same RNG seed.

And winning the lottery is a less yet similarly big odd of 1 in 13 million, and people win that (multiple sometimes, even). Is it really that strange for someone to pull off a 1 in 17 million?

If you're questioning them doing it while recording, think about this: How many other streamers were recording themselves Shiny hunting & resetting, also at this point in the game for a Shiny Starter? While this is a 1 in 17 million chance, I have a suspicion that this exact scenario, soft resetting for a Shiny Starter against the first uncatchable battle encounter, has happened more than 17 million times.

Eh, someone will save it and reupload it.

Anyway, they've release this live band version of the intro & a theme that teaches you to be careful walking into random houses:
I mean.

yeah?

Theres a ton of "full OST" uploads on youtube. But that's irrelevant to the original poitn of "tpc putting up a full official upload of the soundtrack on youtube, and allowing for free downloads of them"

I guess the reasoning is that Platinum, however better it is compared to DP, is a game that could have been just a patch.

I'm curious if Japan has comparable opinions towards Capcom's policy of releasing lots and lots of different editions of Street Fighter games. If they do, there you have it - it's what I'm saying.

Japan's attitude towards third versions and remakes is very, very different from the West's attitude on such a matter, and Japan is much less nostalgia driven in their opinions than the West. Generally, third versions and remakes are viewed in a much less favorable light because people in Japan have a "purist", for lack of better word, mentality towards works and prefer the original work as it is. Meaning they essentially prefer a one and done situation when it comes to works: the original work in their minds is best left as is. Since Diamond and Pearl is, by all means, the original work and Platinum is essentially a revision of it, they hold DP in higher regard and Platinum is overshadowed since it was essentially a revisit of a work that was already made, and also why HGSS is ranked fairly low. BW2 is the only other "region revisit" to have made it, and is more popular than HGSS and Platinum, likely because it is an original work in its own right being a sequel story to BW1 and a unique experience in and of itself.

With that in mind, it makes me wonder if Legends: Arceus will be much more warmly received amongst Japanese players than past region revisits like ORAS, FRLG, and even HGSS.

That being said, it's a real testament to how excellent Platinum and HGSS are when they are the only respective upper version and remake to even make it into the Top 100 games of this poll at all. When it comes to third versions, none of Emerald, Crystal, or USUM made it in whatsoever, and none of the other remakes except HGSS made it, a true testament to the greatness of Platinum and HGSS.

Also I am extremely glad to see Gen 5 getting the love it deserves, with BW1 making it into the Top 30 and the 4th most popular Pokemon game in that poll (only behind DP, SwSh, and RB), and BW2 making it in 60th place. Gen 4 and Gen 5 taking all the wins here, with DP taking the lead, Platinum and HGSS being the only upper version and remake to make it into the Top 100 at all, and both Gen 5 games taking solid spots in the rankings. DS Era Pokemon WINS!!!!

Other than that, Red and Blue seem to hold a comfortable third place amongst the games and a solid 24th place (or shall I say, Red and Green since this is Japan we're talking about). As the original games of the series it's no surprise that they are still iconic to this very day. I'm kind of surprised to see Sword and Shield so high though, even speaking as someone who unironically loves that game and considers it the most fun I've had playing Pokemon in years, I'd think that given how divisive and controversial it is it would not even be close to being that high in the rankings. I suppose people in Japan were ultimately a lot warmer towards SwSh overall? Maybe the DLC really upped many peoples' impressions of the game in the end? Who knows? That sure is funny to see that game make it so high though. Or maybe Sword and Shield's merits were things the Japanese playerbase valued so much that many ended up loving it in the end? That really sticks out, and I say this as someone who really liked SwSh.

Very funny to see Sun and Moon and USUM not make it into the Top 100 at all. Poor Gen 7 seems to be the major underdog of the franchise right now as is, at least amongst the Japanese playerbase.

I have to disagree with this description. In a similar vein to Street Fighter, Capcom regularly releases updated expanded versions of the Monster Hunter franchise, and without exception these expansions are more popular than the original, and by significant margins at that. In an unofficial poll published just a few days ago, the #2 most popular installment had 29x as many votes as the original release.

The scale of improvement is far higher than with Pokémon, but it is contradictory to the idea that Japanese hold originals to be the best. Though that very well may be the case in this particular example.

Don't forget the Persona franchise getting re-releases to great sales. Hell, I started to realize that the Third version re-release is essentially the status quo when I compared it to games like Persona and Monster Hunter. The only reason I feel that Pokemon gets criticized for it is because the other franchises weren't as mainstream as Pokemon, thus removing other examples from the public consciousness. Somewhat related, it still feels weird that Persona and Monster Hunter are now pretty mainstream franchises when they were the games I wished more people played.
