Mindset to Victory: A Warstory

I hate intro's and I'm sure you do too: so rather than waste your time, why not just go straight to the part you came to see?

Rules: Ladder Match, Sleep Clause, Freeze Clause, OHKO Clause, Evasion Clause, Species Clause, Strict Damage Clause, Soul Dew Clause
Articanus sent out Infernape.
capaglassman sent out Jirachi.

Jirachi versus Infernape is a tricky match-up, as it is, if anything, a guessing game. For one, it is most likely Scarfed. Since it is Scarf, I can see the moves Iron Head, Zen Headbutt, Stealth Rock, or U-Turn coming from it. However, the move that scares me most is Trick, stealing my Infernape's Focus Sash and surviving my Overheat, easily allowing any pokemon afterwards to come in on said Overheat and set up. Letting the opponent set up can be quite annoying, so rather than do that I'll use Fake Out, which in no way causes me to lose momentum and nullifies the Jirachi's ability to make use of my Sash. At worst he switches and I see a pokemon on his team.

Infernape used Fake Out.
It's not very effective...
Jirachi lost 4% of its health.
Jirachi flinched!

So far expected... now the tricky thing to decide it to go with Stealth Rock(assuming a switch now that the Trick idea is ruined), or to just Overheat and hope I hit something(while also killing the Jirachi). I decide to go for plan two since I don't need Stealth Rock up: Infernape is, if anything, an anti-lead, which it does very well.

Jirachi used Zen Headbutt.
It's super effective!
Infernape lost 99% of its health.
Infernape used Overheat.
It's super effective!
Jirachi lost 96% of its health.
capaglassman's Jirachi fainted.
Infernape's special attack was harshly lowered.
Articanus: 6
capaglassman: 5

And the match quickly shifts into my favor. Now my opponent reveals his pokemon and I can react to it accordingly. Even more useful is the fact that Infernape can still be used later, assuming that Jirachi was the Stealth Rocker of the opponent's team.

capaglassman switched in Scizor.

Who the hell uses Scizor? Oh wait.... ._."
Scizor is about to show off its primary move, Bullet Punch. There is no doubt it's coming, so I might as well keep Infernape and bring in something else that can take it. Stealth Rock is still an important move, and Fake Out might come in handy later. Blaze boosted Overheats aren't anything to just toss aside, either.

Articanus switched in Gyarados.
Gyarados's intimidate cut Scizor's attack!
Scizor used Bullet Punch.
It's not very effective...
Gyarados lost 21% of its health.

Gyarados is in the house and ready to kick ass and chew Magikarps... and he's all out of Karp!
Early-game, Gyarados usually focuses on scouting switch-ins with Waterfall to weaken them for later Dragon Dance sweeps, if it ever gets the chance. It also gets the jump on trainers who bring in stuff like Scarfed Gengar, predicting an early Dragon Dance.

capaglassman switched in Starmie.
Gyarados used Waterfall.
It's not very effective...
Starmie lost 35% of its health.
Gyarados lost 10% of its health.
Starmie's leftovers restored its health a little!
Starmie restored 6% of its health.

Not exactly the best scenario, but definitely not the worst, either. I'm very much more terrified of something like SpecsMence coming in(thankfully it's used less than 2% of the time, compared to Dragon Dance or Mixed versions). I have on my team, thankfully, a pokemon who's able to take even the toughest of special attacks from Starmie, especially with it running Leftovers over Life Orb.

Articanus switched in Snorlax.
Starmie used Recover.
Starmie restored 29% of its health.

My opponent seems to be taking the conservative route, removing all damage when given the opportunity. That's what I get for switching, anyway.
You can see we're both being careful with our early-game execution, as we are both taking very cautious moves to figure out the opponent's team. While I know so little, it would be best to start off with a Body Slam. It's powerful, STAB, and comes with a nice paralysis rate that doesn't hurt.

Starmie used Rapid Spin.
Snorlax lost 4% of its health.
Snorlax used Body Slam.
Starmie lost 46% of its health.
Starmie is paralysed! It may be unable to move!
Snorlax's leftovers restored its health a little!
Snorlax restored 4% of its health.
Starmie's leftovers restored its health a little!
Starmie restored 6% of its health.

Starmie, intimidated by the size of the creature before him, ignores his master's commands and trys to Rapidly Spin away from the grasp of the monstrosity, only to find itself Slammed with Snorlax's Body, paralyzing it in fear.
In all honesty I don't know what is going through my opponent's head to make him Rapid Spin: maybe he forgot Infernape never got it off and just clicked it out of pure habit? Misclick? Who knows but him. I got lucky with the paralysis taking effect, and now I will finish it off with Crunch.

Snorlax used Crunch.
It's super effective!
Starmie lost 57% of its health.
Starmie used Recover.
Starmie restored 50% of its health.
Starmie's leftovers restored its health a little!
Starmie restored 6% of its health.

...and I see we are getting no where fast. At this point I expect a switch since I am doing more damage than he can Recover off, not to mention the paralysis, critical hit, AND defense drop rates that can take into effect at any moment. I decide to go back to Infernape for some Overheat(and possibly Stealth Rock) madness.

Articanus switched in Infernape.
Starmie used Recover.
Starmie restored 41% of its health.

... and again, my attempts at early-game predictions screw me over. WHy can't people rationally realize when the should switch and do so when I tell them to? CAN'T YOU SEE IT'S TEARING ME APART!?!?!
*audience stares blankly*
... so now I'm in a bad spot. In my hastiness I click Stealth Rock, completely ignoring the fact that my opponent graciously provided information only a couple of turns ago that it would be quickly removed...

Infernape used Stealth Rock.
Pointed stones float in the air around the foe's team!
Starmie is paralysed! It can't move!

... thankfully that Slam of the Body wasn't for nothing. With Stealth Rock up and me coming to my natural senses, I think "I'm stupid! He can Rapid Spin it away and kill my Infernape at the same time! Snorlax get your fatass back out there!"
(Don't judge me)

Articanus switched in Snorlax.
Starmie used Rapid Spin.
Starmie blew away the pointed stones!
Snorlax lost 3% of its health.
Snorlax's leftovers restored its health a little!
Snorlax restored 3% of its health.

I saw that coming... now it is Snorlax vs a paralyzed Starmie. I have the advantage with paralysis and a critical hit chance on my side(compared to him being forced to recover over and over), so I think it's fair to keep Body Slamming till I get something else.

capaglassman switched in Breloom.
Snorlax used Body Slam.
Breloom lost 63% of its health.
Breloom was badly poisoned!

Fucking shitake mushroom! Why are these popping up everywhere?!?!
So yeah obvious Spore is coming, and I have an odd Sleep Talker in the form of Choice Scarf...

Articanus switched in Flygon.
Breloom used Substitute.
Breloom lost 25% of its health.
Breloom made a substitute!
Breloom's Poison Heal restored health!
Breloom restored 12% of its health.

Flygon: *turns around and glares at Articanus*
It's only a STAB Focus Punch from 130 base attack. You can take it!
Flygon: Yeah, just like how your mom took it last night...

Breloom is tightening its focus!
Flygon used Dragon Claw.
The substitute took damage for Breloom!
Breloom's substitute faded!
Breloom used Focus Punch.
Flygon lost 100% of its health.
Articanus's Flygon fainted.
Breloom's Poison Heal restored health!
Breloom restored 12% of its health.
Articanus: 5
capaglassman: 5

Fuckin' a man... I hate that thing. Now I've lost my primary revenge-killing Dragon to a Mushroom. My best bet at this point is to lower its attack with Gyarados and continue attacking so it can't get that Spore off.

Articanus switched in Gyarados.
Gyarados's intimidate cut Breloom's attack!
capaglassman switched in Starmie.
Gyarados used Waterfall.
It's not very effective...
Starmie lost 33% of its health.
Gyarados lost 10% of its health.
Starmie's leftovers restored its health a little!
Starmie restored 6% of its health.

I saw it coming, but truth be told there was very little I could do about it. Back to Lax for some good GSC ass-kicking.

Articanus switched in Snorlax.
Starmie used Recover.
Starmie restored 26% of its health.

Going with the same plan again: continuously Body Slam till something happens.

capaglassman switched in Scizor.
Snorlax used Body Slam.
It's not very effective...
Scizor lost 20% of its health.

Scizor puts a big halt to my plans: knowing it is most likely CB, it can take a huge chunk of my HP with U-Turn or Superpower. At this point I would welcome a Superpower since that would be an easy opportunity to get a Dragon Dance with Gyarados: and not only that, U-Turn is most likely coming anyway, so I might as well stay in and hope for the best.

Scizor used U-turn.
Snorlax lost 61% of its health.
capaglassman switched in Infernape.
Snorlax used Body Slam.
Infernape lost 62% of its health.
Snorlax's leftovers restored its health a little!
Snorlax restored 6% of its health.

Infernape means trouble: Close Combat is coming my way and nothing can stop it. My only choice is to let Gyarados go and kill Infernape on the revenge-turn with my own.

Articanus switched in Gyarados.
Gyarados's intimidate cut Infernape's attack!
Infernape used Close Combat.
It's not very effective...
Gyarados lost 31% of its health.
Infernape's defence was lowered.
Infernape's special defence was lowered.
Infernape lost 10% of its health.
---
Infernape used Thunderpunch.
It's super effective!
Gyarados lost 28% of its health.
Articanus's Gyarados fainted.
Infernape lost 10% of its health.
Articanus: 4
capaglassman: 5
Articanus switched in Infernape.

Now please die quietly, like my Gyarados did.
For those wondering "Why doesn't Gyarados say anything when he faints?", it's because Gyarados is well-behaved, unlike other physical water types I know(Azumarill's had a big head ever since my warstory with Mr. Happy).

capaglassman switched in Starmie.
Infernape used Fake Out.
A critical hit!
Starmie lost 22% of its health.
Starmie's leftovers restored its health a little!
Starmie restored 6% of its health.

... and his Infernape lives to see another day. Rather than let my Infernape go to waste, I think Snorlax is due for another check-in.

Articanus switched in Snorlax.
Starmie used Rapid Spin.
A critical hit!
Snorlax lost 6% of its health.
Starmie's leftovers restored its health a little!
Starmie restored 6% of its health.
Snorlax's leftovers restored its health a little!
Snorlax restored 6% of its health.

Oh noez, not another critical hit!
Rather than continuously Body Slam, lets bring in Lucario on the Recover... or if he switches, react accordingly...

Articanus switched in Lucario.
Starmie used Surf.
Lucario lost 57% of its health.
Starmie's leftovers restored its health a little!
Starmie restored 6% of its health.

...or if he Surfs, dies? Like hell I'd throw away my Lucario like that! Time to send in the special squad: go Gardevoir!

Articanus switched in Gardevoir.
Gardevoir traced Starmie's Natural Cure!
Starmie used Surf.
Gardevoir lost 31% of its health.
Starmie's leftovers restored its health a little!
Starmie restored 3% of its health.
Gardevoir's leftovers restored its health a little!
Gardevoir restored 6% of its health.

This Gardevoir is special: it's a general-purpose set, designed for, well, general situations. Gardevoir always gets my team in a good spot, and I'm sure now is no exception!
Will-o-Wisp is the primary move I fire off when I first bring her in, hitting Pursuit users and general pokes, as nothing really likes getting Burned.

capaglassman switched in Salamence.
Salamence's intimidate cut Gardevoir's attack!
Gardevoir used Will-o-wisp.
Salamence was burned!
Salamence was hurt by its burn!
Salamence lost 12% of its health.
Gardevoir's leftovers restored its health a little!
Gardevoir restored 6% of its health.

I can dig that. Good job Gardevoir! Now Wish!
By Wishing I can scout for any switches and for the Mences moveset, and give any of my pokemon a free switch-in.

Salamence used Fire Blast.
Gardevoir lost 30% of its health.
Salamence lost 10% of its health.
Gardevoir used Wish.
Gardevoir made a wish!
Salamence was hurt by its burn!
Salamence lost 12% of its health.
Gardevoir's leftovers restored its health a little!
Gardevoir restored 6% of its health.

Life Orb Fire Blast... I smell an Outrage in my future. No matter: the Burn will be very helpful in ensuring that my Gardevoir lives through it. Psychic should finish the job rather nicely.

Salamence used Outrage.
Salamence went on a rampage!
Gardevoir lost 53% of its health.
Salamence lost 10% of its health.
Gardevoir used Psychic.
Salamence lost 52% of its health.
The wish came true!
Gardevoir restored 50% of its health.

Salamence lost 3% of its health.
capaglassman's Salamence fainted.
Gardevoir's leftovers restored its health a little!
Gardevoir restored 6% of its health.
Articanus: 4
capaglassman: 4

With that the game is tied: however, the momentum is in cap's hands, and I'm sure that Scizor and it's U-Turn will make a reappearance.

capaglassman switched in Scizor.

I have three choices here: Will-o-Wisp, Wish, or switch. This Scizor annoys me, so at this point I'm thinking "must.... cripple...".

Gardevoir used Will-o-wisp.
Scizor was burned!
Scizor used U-turn.
It's super effective!
Gardevoir lost 62% of its health.
Articanus's Gardevoir fainted.
capaglassman switched in Starmie.
Articanus: 3
capaglassman: 4

Articanus switched in Snorlax.

I'm getting very tired of this match-up: Snolax, Body Slam till you belly turns purple!

Starmie used Surf.
Snorlax lost 17% of its health.
Snorlax used Body Slam.
Starmie lost 45% of its health.
Starmie is paralysed! It may be unable to move!
Snorlax's leftovers restored its health a little!
Snorlax restored 6% of its health.
Starmie's leftovers restored its health a little!

...or we can just stop here and go straight for the crunch?

Snorlax used Crunch.
It's super effective!
Starmie lost 61% of its health.
capaglassman's Starmie fainted.
Snorlax's leftovers restored its health a little!
Snorlax restored 6% of its health.
Articanus: 3
capaglassman: 3

OK so why didn't that happen earlier?
So now this shit has gone to end-game: my opponent has his burned Scizor, an almost-dead Infernape, and a Breloom. There is no doubt that said Breloom is coming in next turn.

capaglassman switched in Breloom.

So now I have to think: what happens next? For one, Breloom will Spore Snorlax. That is certain. With Starmie gone he is definitely the most expendable, so I click Body Slam to keep up the pressure and not let a free Substitute go by.

Breloom used Substitute.
Breloom lost 25% of its health.
Breloom made a substitute!
Snorlax used Body Slam.
The substitute took damage for Breloom!
Breloom's substitute faded!
Breloom's Poison Heal restored health!
Breloom restored 12% of its health.
Snorlax's leftovers restored its health a little!
Snorlax restored 6% of its health.

OK so now Spore?

Breloom used Spore.

Snorlax is fast asleep!
Breloom's Poison Heal restored health!
Breloom restored 12% of its health.
Snorlax's leftovers restored its health a little!
Snorlax restored 6% of its health.

Now Infernape: Lucario is too important to let go, as its priority and resistances are most useful late-game.

Articanus switched in Infernape.
Breloom used Substitute.
Breloom lost 25% of its health.
Breloom made a substitute!
Breloom's Poison Heal restored health!
Breloom restored 12% of its health.

And now we meet Infernape's end.
Infernape: Thanks for keeping me throughout the whole match. Your the greatest!
You DO realize it is your final turn right?
Infernape: Yeah, but at least you keep me beyond the first turn! Most people would just toss me away after the first couple of turns.
And thus brings the question: would you(the reader)?!?!

Infernape used Close Combat.
The substitute took damage for Breloom!
Breloom's substitute faded!
Infernape's defence was lowered.
Infernape's special defence was lowered.
Breloom used Seed Bomb.

Infernape lost 1% of its health.
Articanus's Infernape fainted.
Breloom's Poison Heal restored health!
Breloom restored 12% of its health.
Articanus: 2
capaglassman: 3

And with the arrival of Lucario...

Articanus switched in Lucario.

Comes Breloom's demise. Lucario, use Hyper Beam!
...whaddya mean you don't have Hyper Beam?!?! Just use Close Combat then...

Breloom is tightening its focus!
Lucario used Close Combat.
Breloom lost 35% of its health.
capaglassman's Breloom fainted.
Lucario's defence was lowered.
Lucario's special defence was lowered.
Lucario lost 10% of its health.
Articanus: 2
capaglassman: 2

Now the two end-game forces come face-to-face:

capaglassman switched in Scizor.

Scizor vs Lucario: the battle of the SDing priority-abusing Steel types, the primary one in DP and the one overshadowing it with the release of platinum. Usually iy would be Lucarios's easy win... however, due to the blunder of bringing it on Starmie earlier, and the Defense drops, the best route for now is to bring in Snorlax and get rid of the defense drops.

Articanus switched in Snorlax.
Scizor used Bullet Punch.
Snorlax lost 29% of its health.
Scizor was hurt by its burn!
Scizor lost 12% of its health.
Snorlax's leftovers restored its health a little!
Snorlax restored 6% of its health.

Surprisingly I'm not dead! Now I get to waste another turn as I die and burn damage takes it's toll.

capaglassman switched in Infernape.
Snorlax is fast asleep!
Snorlax's leftovers restored its health a little!
Snorlax restored 6% of its health.

Or he switches and kills me with Infernape, forcing LO recoil on Lucario before finishing it with Scizor. GG capaglassman, well played end-game.

Infernape used Close Combat.
It's super effective!
Snorlax lost 34% of its health.
Articanus's Snorlax fainted.

Holy shit.... I WON! WITH 3 HP, I WON! I MOTHFUC-

Lucario-fanatics used Trample!
It's super-effective!
Articanus lost 100% of its health.
Articanus lost his Lucario!

... excuse all the bad jokes. it's 2:46 am, and I have to work in the morning. ugh. I'll add all the assessment shit later.

Where have you been dude? And when are we doing that Eyeshield battle? I soooooo want Mr. Don to eat shit, go Gauo!!! Also, Yamato is a retard. Seriously. :/

Anyway, nice warstory for 2:45 am, not bad on the jokes either. :P

Quite entertaining, I always find it amusing in your warstories that you always screw up by overpredicting early game.

Nice commentary but the battle was meh, not more then average really. I mean you've sacrificed your Flygon while you had a gardevoir to take the focus punch. But your opponent was even worse switching in both Salamence and Scizor into Gardevoir while the burn was obvious. Also for what where does random rapid spins for, even if he predicted an SR from infernape Starmie is still faster making the last useless as well.

Of course everybody might make a mistake during a battle, but switching in a physicall sweeper twice into gardevoir was quite stupid. It's not your fault that he was stupid but i suggest you could find a better battle next time

As a side note nobody cares about the intro, but pictures at the end or during the battle really help reading it.

Articanus said:

My answer is...probably not, I'm too mean to my Pokemon D:

Nice read, and the talking with your Pokemon like Gyarados being well-behaved or Lucario having no Hyper Beam were funny. 4.9 Stars! The 0.1 Extra Stars were removed for maintenance issues.

That's if he didn't Fake Out.

Great warstory, and as usual, you are the pioneer with Pokémon/people conversations.

Interesting warstory, I enjoyed reading it. Of course, though, I think it needs Sprites and maybe some sort of small introduction.

Nice warstory : )
The dialogues with your pokemon are always entertaining, keep it up.
And I would've probably switched Infernape as fodder somewhere...
Overall great warstory.
PS: I don't get it, why is the story called 'mindset to victory'?

I almost always keep my 1 hp leads. Even if the get SR or sandstorm/hail it's nice to have for scouting and drawing life orb damage. I've even won a battle with the only thing left on my team being a 1 hp Aerodactyl that could be brought in anyway due to Stealth Rock.

The battle was only ok. As mien mentioned there were a lot of mistakes, although mien you forgot that Starmie was paralyzed and therefore slower than Infernape so the Rapid Spin could have worked had infernape used it.

I liked the warstory.

But I would have sacrificed Infernape. Even though I have a fetish for surreptitious pebbles, I probably would have thrown it away because I would have expected the rocks to be coming on the enemy's side, rendering Infernape useless.

Just responding to your question on what I would have done.

Quick and to the point

The make believe conversations between you and your dying pokes about how much of a tyrant you are never ceases to grow old

A really nice read
