Welcome to Smogon! Take a moment to read the Introduction to Smogon for a run-down on everything Smogon, and make sure you take some time to read the global rules.
The server is still on 1.7.3 as Bukkit is still not on a recommended build for 1.8. I will update the thread, social group and IRC as I always do when the server is updated.
So I'm back home with a PC that doesn't have Minecraft spaz out every thirty seconds, and I upgraded to 1.8. Holy moly, it's amazing, I like this update, etc.
I started up a new single-player world -- the seed is "latveria" if anyone wants it :B
Here are some screenshots!
This is my little home in the world. It is literally a cave that I have turned into my house/diamond mine. There is a door in the hill that leads down and down and down... There is a dirt column with a jack-o-lantern on top to mark where it is from afar.
I call this place Egg Valley because chickens spawn here and they leave behind so many freaking eggs god damn.
A ravine in the middle of a mountain! This went down pretty deep, and it had three creepers in it, but no real reward other than looking cool.
The view from the bottom of the ravine, looking up into the mountain interior.
This is the first Enderman I encountered, just outside my house. These things scare the crap out of me. I was too afraid to turn off the HUD to get a nice screenshot!
After taking this picture the Enderman flipped out and attacked me, but I had full iron armor and it died in one hit from my sword. But those teleports...those teeth...brr...
I have been looking EVERYWHERE and I can't seem to find a NPC village on single player. I'm too lazy to build a house from scratch, so I'm gonna find an NPC village and make that my home base. I'll upgrade it of course, and I'm pretty psyched for finding it.
Sick, I found a NPC village guys! And before that I found a ravine with a mineshaft.... Which I lost because I got lost looking for an NPC village.... And the NPC village is on the outskirts of a dessert.... and it's made up of a well, and three houses.... Ok, so I maybe should have just stuck with the ravine and a house. But I'm pretty psyched! Do NPC villages appear in desserts, or are they randomly generated ANYWHERE? Like if I was walking through a mountainous valley, would I find an NPC village there? Just wondering before I head out to find a bigger one.
npc villages can spawn anywhere, yes
found one that was really interesting because it formed on top of a bunch of hills, made many of the doors inaccessible
there are people who've found ravines cutting through villages, even
Update on what's happening or what we think might be happening?
*We are still waiting for a Recommended Build of Bukkit before starting the new server. This is to ensure the best playing experience for everyone, as there are still a lot of bugs that are being ironed out, even on the current 'stable' builds. You can see for yourself here: http://ci.bukkit.org/builds
*With the new map and decreased performance of the game (lots of reports of squid and other persistent mobs hogging cpu space, plus other memory leaks) we are thinking about moving hosts and also upgrading the plan so we have more freedom. At the moment it's looking like www.redstonehost.com as our favourite. We're still deciding on the plan, but it'll probably be the Gold or Diamond one. ANYWAY, that said, upgrade = more money, so we're going to try and push the donator thing a bit more. IF we can get the coloured names working on the server, we'll see about setting up a special group for people who donate. This may or may not include: previously mentioned coloured name, guaranteed space on the server if full, and some extra commands. Just putting it out there to gauge interest.
*I think we've finally settled on a starting size for the new map, and also some sort of spawn design. The first border will be set 1024 blocks radius around the designated spawn area.
We decided on this size for a couple of reasons:
a) anything smaller and users wouldn't have enough space for larger builds
b) anything much larger may cause CPU issues due to the decreased performance of the game in 1.8 with people being so spread out and having lots of different chunks loaded at the same time.
Also, forks drew up a rough sketch of something spawny:
*Seed for the new map. I don't think anyone wants to start out on a tiny island in the middle of a huge ocean biome, which is why I think we need to scout seeds and decide on one we'd like to use instead. We're looking for something to accommodate the rough spawn plan, and a good source of all the common building materials. So a desert nearby would be nice, maybe a swamp for the vines and mushrooms etc etc. Perhaps it's best to steer clear of the snow biomes atm as they don't have snow...
*Persistent mobs. This could either be really cool with the husbandry supposedly coming in 1.9... But for now we're stuck with essentially finite mobs. This means a limited meat supply, and wool will be a lot harder to come across. I think we should avoid killing animals until we can start to 'breed' them for more resources in the next patch.
Persistent Mob mechanics (apparently):
There are now two spawning algorithms, the old continuous one and a new one that is run when chunks are generated
The old algorithm only allows animals to spawn every 400th tick, or 20 seconds, meaning they will spawn at 1/400th the rate that they used to
Other than the above, the conditions for animal spawning appear to be the same as before i.e. on grass with light level 8+, and a limit of 16 in all loaded chunks
Animals can't spawn in deserts or oceans but, like before, animal packs can overlap biome borders thus occasionally spawning in the "wrong" biome
When a chunk is generated, there is a 1/10 chance that the new spawning algorithm will run on it once (and 1/100 chance of it running twice, 1/1000 chance of it running three times, etc)
Each time it runs, the new algorithm will spawn up to 4 of one type of animal within a 16x16 area. It makes 16 attempts to find suitable spawning locations from among the topmost blocks in the area i.e. blocks that can see the sky
The new algorithm does the same three block test as the old one (opaque, non-opaque and non-liquid, non-opaque) but it does not check for grass, light level, or collisions (so animals can e.g. spawn inside a tree)
Animals can no longer despawn
Disclaimer: All of this is subject to change for any reason, but I thought a bit more transparency with what we're thinking was necessary.
Any chance the border will be expanded in 1.9? It'll have at least two new biomes (mushroom and snow), and the stronghold limit will be increased, not to mention we'll need more animals.. Hopefully there will be some memory fixes too.
My idea at first was to have a small border for 1.8 and then open up at 1.9 but people have expressed their feelings against this and it seems the majority of people want a much larger border straight off the bat. I am but one man.......
1.8 is really awesome, I found 3 or 4 villages already. Took one of them for me, and was lucky enough to find an abandoned mine really close to it (I found 22 Diamonds on that mine alone o_0)
i support dan dan in the small -> larger plan think of the future guys oh my goodness!!!!!
also forks' plan is much like i would want towns to be though i would hope we'd still kind of have some kind of structure in free build maybea grid system or some shit idk
i like the idea of a natural and man made coastline woo beach party wooo BUT LCEAN UP AFTER YOURSELVES
I down for the small to larger plan as well. While the interim map is a bit too small 1024 blocks radius sounds big enough. For spawn though, I may be the only one who suggests a more rural feel to it. But that's just me and frankly I'm sure whatever style we choose it's gonna turn out great in the end!
I support the smaller plan, I always felt the old server would feel a lot more developed if some of the cities were closer together. And sorry Black Buddha, rural is boring. I want a Spawn Smogopolis. High-rise Iron and Glass cuboids everywhere, this is the future!
Well, for prior reference, you had to go about 1000-1500 blocks in order to get all the 1.3 updates on Smogcraft 1.0 (lapis, birch). I don't think the trek was that bad as it took one day cycle maximum, but if enough people really thing we should go for a smaller map until 1.9 (is there a time frame of when Mojang wants it out by?), I'm down.
My concern was with a 500 radius map, which is what Dan originally proposed. I figured it was a bit too small, considering that some of the cities in Smogcraft 1.0 were at least 200 blocks long at some parts.
I think the small 1.8 -> larger 1.9 idea is good too, and I also feel that 1000 is more than enough room to start off with. Forks' spawn plan is also pretty cool-looking too.
As for seeds, I've actually got one that you guys may be interested in. My single-player world spawned me on a hill that had a lake on one side and a river on the other (with PLENTY of clay to be had), as well as a desert on the opposite side of the river with a mountain biome beyond that. There's also a swamp biome (at least, I assume it is because all the trees have vines on them, very little water there though which I thought the swamps were supposed to have) not too far off either, although I can't remember which side of spawn it's on. There's also a cave entrance right next to spawn that leads to an abandoned mineshaft that has some melon seeds in it, so we can start up a farm relatively quickly if hunger becomes a problem (it was for me for the first few days). Unfortunately, there's no ocean around that I know of, but I haven't explored more than a couple hundred blocks in any direction in this world.
