Media Minecraft Discussion Thread

So when I have not been nitpicking at the design of my house and building inefficient farms full of redstone circuitry, I've been mining for iron/gold/redstone in an effort to build a roller coaster. The idea I originally had was for it to lead through a collection of caves and pass through mountains, ravines, etc etc, but it would also be really cool to use it as a means of quick (and fun : D ) transport between peoples houses. Lemme know if you want to collaborate on it (although keep in mind that for houses a long way away, we might not finish the connection due to the limited time we have this map) : )

BTW if people find my house then help yourselves to the melons and wheat in the automatic farms, it'd be appreciated if you could also replant the wheat and re-till the dirt for the melons but it's no big deal if you don't

I actually really like dan's arches, they're just about the right scale/style!

im going to make a few more architectural "studies", just basic designs to show off my proposed style.

Dan i really like those arches, i do like the size and style pf them, i would build another map, with some different aspects, like it being biger, but i am making use of creative and im building a castle

Update on the spawn arches!

Putting towers at each corner would make it a bit too much like a castle. Instead maybe to stick with the rounded theme you could have a small dome covering each corner? Either only on the top or the corners could be four hemispheres.

Also is the current theme of stone bricks + wood logs final? I was thinking maybe stone bricks and sandstone perhaps might look better.

Dan, that's pretty much how I though spawn would look. I like the stone brick/log combination. Could we vary it? (Say, Pine on some sides, regular on another, and birch for other places.

So is that the main are where the buildings will be? Outside of the perimeter I mean.

I also came up with a fun game. I call it the Death Quest! Basically you only have a wooden sword and food. That's right, a wooden sword. We all meet up at spawn point and the person who hosts the death quest is leader. Everyone follows the leader into uncharted wilderness at nightime. The goal? To survive countless enemies we will find. The leader can bring you anywhere, including uncharted caves that are unlit. Once dawn breaks, and you are left standing, congradulations! You've survived the night! Go back to town using /warp spawn and take a nice rest.

The whole point of the game is a suicide mission. I know there are some people who get bored after building their perfect houses and want to do something fun. This is their way of having fun! I'll most likely host one every minecraft night when I'm online.

I'd just like to add that if you do go with the logs and stone brick, perhaps having the logs in a vertical design would be better? The log's texture pack is very "vertical" and the stone brick is more "horizontal" so maybe it would work better?

Some of you might have noticed a new game pop up on the server on the hill overlooking spawn

It's a more mario party crazy survival game that can have 5 players. Playing a few games has proven it to be very crazy.

Alright so after seeing all these spawn designs I made this in my free time. It's pretty basic at the moment, but I like it.

Now I'm not really done with this part yet, I will probably have it more opened up towards the fountain area. Maybe with small arches, I dunno.

I know that this is a mod, but I was simply amazed at the detail that was put into it:

^ Pretty elaborate for sure, does sound kinda fun considering there's still no real "ending" at all, or set goals or anything really besides messing around with stuff.

eh mods suk

"At today's meeting @notch suggested that should keep doing prereleases all the way to Minecon, so my previous tweet about 1.9 is obsolete :)"

So, if i'm understanding correctly... we won't be getting 1.9 on Oct 18... or ever. It'll just be pre-releases up to the Minecon release. This means the server will be on 1.8 forever (or until release) as bukkit people haven't been updating for the pre-releases. Seems kinda lame for SMP/server owners, but probably better for the development of the game...

Well that's pretty disappointing... Still, a small part of me is glad that we get to mess around on our server's current map for longer, it's starting to look real spiffy and I haven't explored a lot of the new houses. :toast:

If people are going to build their homes in close proximity to others, can you make sure to light the area up so we lessen the chance of Creeper attacks? It's not really a problem now but with the increasing density of houses there are going to be a lot of dark areas for things to spawn in.

The roller coaster is under construction! You can find the begining on the first floor of my house. It takes you underground through lots of caves and lava so far, but I want to include above ground and underwater sections too. If you want to ride it, I warn you now that some caves are not lit and that the walk back (it doesn't loop around yet) is a bit perilous.

I also made a lava playground. It's the unfinished building next to my house. You notice that on the roof there is a lot of lava with gravel platforms... press the button and the platforms will move up and down : ) You goal is to get to the other side. It lags absolutely horribly though and isn't that fun so I'll probably destroy it : (

as an aside, maybe lucky players will find something nice in their homes......

Doing pre-releases in a game that is in BETA is absssurd! I guess people forget this still isn't the complete game yet.

Not I, although I did get rid of plenty of floating trees, don't be lazy, just get the whole damn tree, it looks bad when you see a floating mass of leaves...

Thank you for helping me keep it under control Layell, I was having issues with the fire when you showed up. :)

EDIT : also, what can i do to increase the performance of my game, I'm running a very bad computer, with the OS being Windows XP
I have set the thing to Max FPS, and Fast graphics on short render distance, Tiny is just horrible.

Ninja Can, get a better computer? haha( are you running a pc or laptop?). Dont run anything else while running minecraft? What FPS you getting? I am getting around 250-300 running only minecraft and about 200-250 running minecraft, itunes and firefox.
Also, YAY now if this map is going to be up for a decent time i might actually build something worth while...not a hole in the ground with a door.

hey, i started out with a hole in the ground with a door, and look what it turned into...

Lol, well scampy, if you see a house partly submerged RIGHT next to your house, DON'T DROWN IT. That would be my house lol. I have to admit that I'm dissapointed that 1.9 won't come out till the release. Aren't we able to turn our server into a pre-release though?
