also, would appreciate if someone could nudge me in the direction of some good shadowing-highlighting-ish tutorials, everything I've tried just looks strange, lol >_<

Haha that's awesome!!

Ok I haven't come across tutorial stuff, but shadows and highlights are quite easy of you want to go simple. Just imagine a source of light--the curves that catch it are slightly lighter and the back sides and a bit darker. The best way is to 1 experiment and 2 look at good artists' pieces. It may look extremely obvious, but actually the light and dark areas blend together so you can't really tell.
