Nickname discussion

^Actually, that was the default nickname style used by some opponents in the first Pokémon Stadium game. I recall a Sanslash being named "SLASHSAND", for instance. It apparently had something to do with a "cheat code" in Stadium: Certain nicknames would give certain Pokémon alternate colouration.

I only have one to say for a sorta-kinda update, but I think it's so clever that it's worth posting.

California the Primal Groudon.

Personally I tend to gravitate towards classy and elegant names for my Pokemon. I usually spend a lot of time in the side content minigames (Contests, Musicals, etc.) and I feel as though classy names fit well with them.

Not sure if it's been used already but I like to call this dude "Drag-Goon" as in 'dragon' and 'goon'

There's an air ride machine called the Dragoon in Kirby Air Ride. It's also featured as in item in Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Smash Bros. 4. Either way, not the most original in my opinion. But I'll give you credit. I just named mine Nick after the beefy ginger guy in my Chemistry class. Today, I'm thinking of naming mine "The Fairy Beacon."

I do that too! I also try to go for names that seem regal and gentlemanly. I named my Swampert Sir Swamp, and my Chesnaught Chesknight. While they are puns, I feel these two knight names give them plenty of character. I also love the name Shimmer/Glimmer (Shimmer for females, Glimmer for males) for Dratini and Dragonair. One of the reasons I didn't evolve my first Dragonair until it was level 97...

I am patiently awaiting the day that Mega Mawile gets nerfed sufficiently to return to OU, just so I can call it Samson. For the biblical reference.

But really, my nicknames don't follow any specific pattern. Sometimes they're semi-puns akin to what Game Freak do themselves (Arctide - Empoleon, arctic + tide), sometimes they're corruptions of the original name (Nuttley - Ferrothorn, Japanese Nattorei), sometimes they're obscure scientific/language/mythology related factoids smashed into a nickname (Faraday/Shamal/Euryale, Magnezone/Hippowdon/Skarmory) and sometimes when I can't think of one I name them just because it seems right at the time. Hence "Brian" the Dragonite. Beats me how it looks any more like a Brian than my other Dragonites.

If I do have any patterns though, it's these:

1) big-bad-pseudo-legends deserve nicknames with reverse appropriateness. Hence Dandelion and Foxglove, my other two Dragonite, and Fluffy + Pekachu, my two Garchomp. It is incredible how many people get annoyed by my apparent sincerity regarding Dragonite's likeliness to meadow flowers.

2) I very rarely dive into pop culture or any kind of modern meme-ish references. What's a good nickname now might not be in a few years :| Only exception I've had has been to name my female Gliscor "Marquise", only because of Gliscor being an arachnid and blue and also because it's sufficiently obscure.

I love seeing other people's nicknames in-game when I'm battling. Battles can seem kind of sterile and distant since there's no interaction in-game besides the actual battling; nicknames make it seem like I'm facing someone with a unique personality.
(Except that one guy on Pokemon Battle Revolution who had a team of 6 Arceus named "view", "my", "youTube", "Account", "plz", "youtubeaccountname". Fuck that guy AND his account.)

Once I get the chance, I'm going to name the Chimchar I got from Birch after defeating the Elite Four, "Goku" or "Luffy". Which one should I choose? In this case, Goku is a reference to the original Chinese tale's Japanese localization, Journey to the West, not Dragon Ball Z, while Luffy is self-explanatory to those who have watched One Piece.

Luffy. I'm pretty sure Goku, one way or another, is way overused by now. Not to mention both Infernape and Luffy have about the same affinity for being in water...

Goodra has lots of charm. Essentially the way a Yoshi does.

Goodra can't have that "charm" because she is biologically female. Yoshi does lay eggs, but he has male organs. More of a hermaphroditic hybrid.

I'm obviously going to get banned for talking about this, but I couldn't care less. I came because nobody here likes or uses a male Goodra because Goodra is too feminine to be male and I just wanted to thank each and every one of you for it.

Gender matters on a Goodra, and if she isn't female, there's something wrong with her. Everyone in this thread agrees with me fully. That is why each and every one of your Goodra is female. None of them are male because once again, Goodra is too feminine to be male, and always needs to be female. She is the one Pokemon you care about the most.

JES

Gender Preference Female Only Goodra ftw!

I know everyone on tumblr used a female Goodra for their playthrough. Nobody uses a male because they're ****** garbage. Of course knowing that I'm saying this, I'll be marked as a "troll" and some jokester from 4chan who browses the smogrums is going to come here and tell me that he uses a male Goodra. I express my hatred towards these vile, incorrect gendered and pointless beasts on my tumblr. Male Goodra that is. I am not trolling. I'm dead serious. Yeah, the gender ratio is canonically 50/50, but it's just so wrong.

Female is the correct gender for Goodra.

Well, this came out of nowhere. Firstly, "nobody here likes or uses a male Goodra" is completely wrong:
Majin%20Buudra%20Small_zpsfyruag6r.png

This is Majin Buudra. He has been on my main competitive team since early 2014. As you can clearly see, he is a male.
Two, honestly, single gendered (and I don't mean genderless) actually make less sense when you really think about it (not counting the Nidos).
Three, I can tell from your username and post count that you joined Smogon just to rant about Goodra's gender.
Four, a Pokémon gender rarely matters for most competitive players. If it does, it really is a personal choice. Like how I use a male Conkeldurr just to use the nickname Aaron Durr. If it wasn't for that, I wouldn't care if I got a female one.

The gender of Pokemon i'm using just for the story matters to me somewhat, not so much that allgoodraarefemale ranted though... I prefer some to be male, like Houndoom, and some to be female, like my first Dratini. It all depends I think on what you're going to name it, and if you think it looks more like a male/female. Anyway, I wouldn't mine a male Goodra. I can see it as being manly too. Like how marshmallows are manly if you draw a cool face on them. Anyway, this is the nickname thread. Not the "GOODRA NEEDS 2 B FMALE ONLY THRED" I mean really, Gamefreak isn't going to change that just because it appears feminine. It would be like trying to get Tauros and Milktank changed to 50/50, instead of each only being male and female respectively.

Yea...nah. I just got lucky, and happened to get the gender that I think worked best for Goomy. But when I get to breeding a competitive Goodra, hopefully, the end result will be a 5 IV girl, but if the one with perfect IVs happens to be a boy, I'll work with that instead. It's like a male Gothorita or Jigglypuff, or maybe a female Conkeldurr: one gender might look more suitable than the other, but when you're into competitive battling and breeding, you just have to accept what the game gives you. Or you could waste more time trying to get a female Goomy with 31 IVs wherever you want them (everything but Attack for example).

I tend to nickname my pokemon on what I feel they are, but I always put a reference in there or just some funny name to it
Some examples ehe:
Rotom-Wash ~Mr.Clean/Tide
Azumarill shiny Yellow ~ Pineapple ( It's practically one :P )
Tyranitar- Reptar (Yes the one from Rugrats)
Celeby- Celery (The one and only onion fairy)

I would've named my Kyurem Winter Is Coming or Winter Has Come (Game of Thrones reference), so I'll name him Mr. Freeze.

Since I mainly Nuzlocke, I tend to give my Pokemon more human names (because establishing bonds or whatever.)
However, there was a Ruby run I did where I used either Pokemon considered bad or Pokemon I hadn't used often and I really loved my nicknames.
Blaziken-Foxtrot
Crawdaunt-Harbinger
Banette-Maverick
Altaria-Jaeger
Muk-Syndrome
Cradily-The Colony

I honestly came up with those names while on the toilet.

when I'm not Nuzlocking, or like for teams on Showdown, I generally use compound names (not no much now, I used to when I was younger, like Skyarrow,) references to something else, or names that I think sound cool and intimidating. Gotta have the psychological edge.
