@zerowing: I could be completely wrong here, but I will take a stab at addressing your comment. It sounds like Vash has been receiving continued slurs, insults, and mal-behaviour since the incident. While people on here have tried calculating it themselves, with the same results, it doesn't really sound official which still leaves that doorway open for continued abuse. However, by posting what would have happened by an official rep gives what everyone else has been saying some credit and value.

The thing is he hasn't unless it is through PM, I did insult him over frustration a few hours after the battles occurred, and that was it. Vash has not been receiving insults and slurs, just arguments against what he did during his battle. However there was no need to bring this situation up again, at all, everyone has moved on, with the exception of what seems like Vash.

As for your assertion that AR and other devices should be completely banned due to its unfair nature, you need to realize that the overwhelming majority of competitors who visit online sites are most likely using pokemon that have in some way been touched by an external device. I know for a fact that at least half of the competitors here have competed with pokemon touched by an external device; whether it be a pokemon traded for to be used as a grand parent / parent or just to EV train them.

I fail to see how this makes Alakapimp right at all, this is a little extreme, but because one half of the population is on a serial killer rampage, it suddenly makes it right?

A quote from their website:

The use of external devices to alter the Pokémon in a player’s party is expressly forbidden. Random checks will be performed throughout the tournament to determine whether or not an external device has been used to modify a player’s party. Players found to have Pokémon that have been tampered with will be disqualified from the event, regardless of whether the player tampered with his or her game or received a Pokémon or item that was tampered with by someone other than the player. It is the player’s responsibility to have legal Pokémon.
They made the rules and they chose not to follow it, just because "half" the community uses an external device does not make it right. It even says that it is the competitor's responsibility to make sure the Pokemon he/she uses are legit and not tampered with and even if it was received in a trade it would still be grounds for a disqualification, so even the argument that it wasn't Alakapimp's Pokemon shouldn't even exist. Alakapimp got away with murder here, he was caught and that's that, he should've been DQed on the spot, but whoever made the decision dropped the ball and I lost all respect I had for these tournaments right there.

What are your plans for Worlds? And I'm not talking about winning :P

What about the rest of you?

I'm just gonna be hanging out with the other smogoners and battling whoever I can find that wants a battle. I'd like to be there for all three official days if possible, so maybe somebody can let me sleep on their floor or something. :P I hope they have a shop like last year, I want to buy a piece of merchandise that is related to this year's VGC; hopefully like a hat or T shirt or something.

Just the ability to be able to spectate the world championships is a great opportunity; I'll probably try and record it as usual and put it on youtube. I was going to look into seeing if I could have a live feed to the internet of the finals, but it seemed a bit difficult with the hotel's internet and such; I'll have to play around with it.

Either way I hope I'll have a great time. :)

To add to this, wasn't there somebody who ended up being DQ'd in the JAA tournament because he bought a used cartridge and the previous owner used an AR? Enforcing that rule has happened in the past; I agree that whoever overruled it dropped the ball.

I don't really understand why people have such a problem with AR-or-similar-devices in these contexts (assuming the AR was only used to create pokemon that are actually possible in-game), for a couple of reasons.

For a start, what are you trying to assess? If you're trying to see who's the best battler, the best team-builder, and Pokemon set designer, then restricting the entries to only "legit" copies is assessing something entirely unrelated: who has the most time to spend playing video games, or the person who has the better luck with the randomness in the game. If that is the case, then you may as well forgo the battles entirely, because you're not actually trying to assess that anymore,

Secondly, the argument about "letting everyone have an even playing field; not everyone has access to an AR" is flawed, because unless the person in question doesn't have the internet (in which case, they won't have any of the associated competitive battling knowledge), they will have access to an AR. There are people on Smogon, Serebii, and GameFAQs that simply create custom-requested hackjobs and trade them out, sometimes for (essentially) free, and other times for in-game stuff that is much easier to obtain.

Furthermore, the line for "legitness" is rather subjective, and is usually based on the speaker's access. With the advent of RNG abuse, the 'in-game'ness of non-AR teams is starting to look a little more blurred. Not everyone will have access to RNG abuse either, but would you ban that? Why?/Why not? Is it because you can do RNG abuse but don't want to shell out the 40 AUD to get the AR?

Finally, I have a problem with enforcing anti-hack rules, because when hacking is done properly, it is indistinguishable from a legit pokemon, and hence disqualifications are then arbitrary, and I don't believe in having arbitrary rules systems in tournaments where people are paying (and making other sacrifices, such as large travel costs) to play and win prizes. If people wanted luck-based awards, they'd buy a Lotto ticket. Hence any anti-hack rules are quite likely to miss hackjobs, and penalise legitimate entrants.

Furthermore, while it's all well and good to say that "It is the responsibility of the entrant to make sure all his pokemon are unhacked", many legitimate players will have no way of even checking to see if their traded pokemon are hacked or not, and hence they will be in for a rude surprise when they travel 1500 miles to compete.

Ultimately, when used properly, the AR gives nothing to the user that they couldn't already get in-game, it just saves time. (For that reason, you could make a loose argument that the AR helps breed further creativity in battling and movesets, because people are freer to test and experiment without having to EV train loads of things over and over again to find exactly the right choice to complement their team).

It's also completely impossible to provide a perfectly level playing field (since not everyone will have access to RNG abuse, for instance), so arguments on that basis are inherently flawed or arbitrary, or cannot discriminate between legit and illegit.

The fundamental question is this: Why is something more legitimate just because it took more time to achieve than a faster, but equivalent-output alternative?

that is an age-old debate that probably shouldn't take place here, most people here agree with you or at least should. anyone who seriously thinks that alakapimp is the only one who used hacked pokemon in this year's tourney or that no one will ever used hacked pokemon in future official tournaments is more naïve than ash ketchum himself

My question is not even one of whether people ARE using hacked pokemon, it's why they should be excluded/looked down upon for doing so.

i know, im telling you it doesnt really matter because of the same stuff you already posted, no one will ever catch a perfect hack. alakapimp is getting hated on because nintendo didnt uphold the same rules that made many people spend several of hours on an evident exercise in futility breeding/trading hacked pokemon, not because people necessarily think he was the only one with hacked pokemon

No, way! :D Someone actually stopped arguing about hacks and history and posted about their plans at Worlds! Yay!

If you run into me and you still need a floor that shouldn't be a problem. It will just be me and my lil bro (if 23 is little XD)

What's everybody else planning on doing? Aside of winning XD

I won't be getting there till late Thursday because I have a midterm Thursday afternoon. I really wish I could be there Wednesday like they had planned! And anyone have any ideas what the movie theater thing they have on the itinerary is?

At the JAA, the winners got to see the newest movie before it was released on DVD. I'm guessing that you guys will be doing the same thing. Have fun with it, I know that those guys didn't hesitate to shout out their comments during the movie back in 2006. ;)

I'll make sure to shout shit twice as loud for you man. Things such as TYRONE! or uhhhhhh TEAM GOBLET GO!

Team Germany will arrive on site on Tuesday/Wednesday and we're still debating what to do. We wanted to visit LA and I think we'll be hanging out at the beaches as well but if you want, you can join us :D

Btw, Team Germany is:
- drug_duck (VGC Berlin 2nd place)
- Fatum (VGC Berlin winner)
- Honchkrow (VGC Paris winner)
- Picollo (VGC Berlin semifinalist)
- DVDA-Porn/Hilikus (VGC Berlin Top 16)
- Viper (VGC Berlin Top 32)

@cookies and Zerowing: I bring it up here because when I try to get closure to this or ask why I am being treated in such a manner on AIM, I either get ignored, written off, or completely blocked. And I know you guys won't answer any PM's if you won't talk on AIM, so that's a waste of time. As far as "it's the internet, why do you care about people" thing.. Simple. A friend is a friend, whether it's via net, pen pal (Mailing letters, and yes it's still done by older people :P), or IRL. And when I'm getting screwed over by 2 of them for no logical reason, it hurts all the same.

What are your plans for Worlds? And I'm not talking about winning :P

I'm just going to chill with my lil Bro and maybe explore downtown or something. I also want to make a point to swim in the Pacific rain or shine. I've swam in the Gulf and Atlantic, but never the Pacific, and I'm probably not going to make another trip out West aaaaaaanytime soon so, I'd better take this chance.

What about the rest of you?
Hmm.. Well I know I will be hittin up the Ocean, that's for sure. I HATE salt water, but I have to swin in the paciffic at least once or twice while I'm there.. and I want to try out surfing! Other then that, I want to visit some sites, maybe see if the have a Vans Skatepart with some rental gear, and just chill out and play games.. Somebody should bring a Wii and Smash Bros Brawl, TBH! :pimp:

Hey! I might be attending worlds, it's not to far from here and it would be awesome to meet new smogoners :) but are we able to get in? i hope it's not like 2008 VGS where only selected people could go in.... Plus the website says:
"This event is only open to those Trainers who have earned an Invitation to compete."
So does that mean those who arent even playing cant come? :(

Exhale...:D

I'm glad we're all starting to talk about worlds finally :D

That movie thing sounds kind of cool! I haven't seen a Pkmn movie since the very 1st one (at least I think it was)! XD I just went for the Mewtwo card, but I got a stupid Zapdos instead :( But my lil Bro (who's coming with me) got a Mewtwo and traded it for my Zapdos :D He's awesome!

Vash, do you skate? I hope you can find a park.

By the way Drug Duck, wouldn't it be cool if we really did face off as teams representing our countries kind of like the Olympics? You know, like still do the every man for himself thing, but just keep track of how each country was doing overall. It would be kind of cool. If only for braggin rights ya-know? ;D

Well, in the interest of keeping a happier subject current, I'll post about some SD activities since I do spend a lot of time there (I live in Orange County):

Swimming in pacific: do this is La Jolla or Pacific Beach, not anywhere so close to downtown.. it's really not as nice

Interesting Food: I can't get enough of Extraordinary Desserts in downtown SD; they've got some of the cutest/yummiest desserts in town, along with some really interesting teas. And be sure to sample some California-style cuisine, my favorite is The Cottage in La Jolla; brunch there is so much awsum. >_<

Shopping: Fashion Valley is the biggest/best mall, if you're looking to shop

Touristy things: There's Legoland, Seaworld, and the ginormous SD Zoo... Disneyland is a not too longof a train ride/drive away, but last year was at Orlando, so maybe this is passe...

Los Angeles isn't too far from SD, if you have a car, and neither is Mexico, but it's REALLYREALLY inadvisable to head there.

And if you like golf, SD has some great options.

I'll come up with a yummy downtown SD centric restaurant list later.

Lemme know if you guys have any other questions~

Oh yeah, the California legoland has this really cool ride where you're on the end of a robot arm and you tell it what to do. I think it's 5 move choices, and they're all strung together. You can make it do some insane stuff, like a rotating spin followed by a backflip and whatever. And if you're lame you can also make it pathetically move up and down boringly. If that's your kind of thing.

I went on the one at Billund and it was pretty ace, but I imagine the California one is better: it's open air as opposed to being indoors like the Billund one. But yeah, it's a pretty cool ride.

And uh... not that much else I can think of. Though if you're one of the European finalists, you'll probably find it interesting to visit a Wal-Mart: it's just so mind-boggling it's worth a look at, because no supermarkets in Europe can compare to it. Not even Tesco, who're widely criticized in the UK for 'taking over the world' by selling everything and at a cheaper price than everyone else.

Thank you sooo much slimceagirl! This is exactly what we need in this thread! ^.6

So, most of us are probably flying in so we (as in I ) probably wont have a car. Does the Big SD have good Public TRansportation? The 2 times I've been in Chicago, I took a shuttle to the airport and busses and Train/Metrolinks everwhere I could possibly need to go. I never once needed to drive ANYWHERE in the entire city! Does SD have this?

Thank you slimceagirl =) Though we have discussed some major attractions, more options available is a nice thing.

And yeah, I probably will go to a Wal Mart LOL

Another question. TPCi says that they will not having a shuttle service from the airport to the venue so is there any public transpartation like a bus? Because I don't really wanna pay a taxi cab .-.

Also, the other finalists do probably know this as well. This year's worlds tournament will feature five rounds of swiss where the first round seems to be people randomly paired up =/ What is more is that only four out of 30 participants make it to semifinals - as it seems there is no quarterfinals... quite odd because that is less than 1/6 -_- All matches are best-of-three, though, so be sure to be able to switch around a few pokes in your team to avoid getting counter picked.
Nevertheless, you need a perfect streak or at least a 4-1 with the loss not too early (since your tiebreaker is better if you lost against opponents with a good record themselves) to make it there. This will be some tough competition...

I thought it was 8 prize winners? Iirc there are 8 DSis up for grabs.

Any info on them, anyway? Are they a special edition or just standard models?

To answer your first thing about public transportation, check out this:

http://www.sandiego.org/nav/Visitors/GettingAround/PublicTransportation

I've been to San Diego a few times, and even though I had a rental car it seemed their public transportation was decent enough to get around. :) I checked out the hotel on Google Earth, and it's right near a pretty touristy area, so it should probably not be a problem.

On the actual competition, that's very interesting about the Swiss; it seems that at least for the actual competitions that matter, PUSA is going torwards Swiss instead of just single elimination across the board. I wasn't aware that it was going to be Swiss, since the website hasn't updated yet with the Worlds regulations, but I'm glad they are heading that way. Next year when I make it to nationals I will just have to see how it works. :P

Have they mentioned anything about who will get the leftover two spots(since IIRC only 30 people have qualified)?

If you run into me and you still need a floor that shouldn't be a problem. It will just be me and my lil bro (if 23 is little XD)

Cool, if I don't find something I'll be sure to let you know ahead of time. ;)

Last year, they where custom DS's.
It was orange (florida = Orange state) with the worlds '08 symbol/VGC symbol in the bottom left corner of the top half of the DS.

If you won it in the VGC, you got the VGC symbol'd one.
If you won it in the TCG, you got the Worlds '08 symbol.

it was actualy pretty cool.

(Pro-AR rant)

The basis of my argument is that not everyone who has Platinum has an AR. One must pay extra money to obtain an AR, while RNG abuse, cloning, etc. can all be done on-cart, without buying anything extra. As such, all of the aforementioned things are acceptable in my opinion, and AR is not. Whether your argument or my argument is superior is irrelevant (and rather arbitrary in itself), I am just attempting to clear up what appeared to be a misunderstanding.

There are 4 DSis for each division, Seniors and Juniors.
