The Everything NFL Thread - 2009

Wildcard

6. Ravens @ 3. Patriots - Patriots are simply the better team, with or without Welker. Edelman is a competent enough Welker clone anyway.
5. Jets @ 4. Bengals - The Jets ran all over the Bengals defense and completely shut down the Bengals offense. Palmer was downright atrocious and may not even have Ochocinco.

6. Eagles @ 3. Cowboys - Simply because the Cowboys won today.
5. Packers @ 4. Cardinals - Could go either way, I just think the Packers are a more complete and consistent team. However, Whisenhunt is a much better coach than McCarthy.

Division

3. Patriots @ 2. Chargers - Seems to be obvious on paper, especially with Welker out, but you can never count the Patriots out in the postseason with Brady.
5. Jets @ 1. Colts - I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if the Colts won, but I do smell an upset here.

3. Cowboys @ 2. Vikings - Vikings do not lose at home. Period.
5. Packers @ 1. Saints - Even though they lost three straight, I still think the Saints are the best team in the NFL.

Conference

5. Jets @ 2. Chargers - The Jets would have to be completely lucky to get here in the first place.

2. Vikings @ 1. Saints - Saints are just better.

Super Bowl XLIV

1. Saints
@ 2. Chargers - Already explained.

-AFC Wild Card Round-
Bengals vs Jets -
Patriots vs Ravens - If we are disciplined, we will win this game. Big if though

-NFC Wild Card Round-
Cardinals vs Packers
Cowboys vs Eagles

-AFC Divisional Round-
Ravens vs Colts - Major upset imo, Colts will have lost momentum and I have faith in Baltimore winning in a close one.
Chargers vs Bengals

-NFC Divisional Round-
Cowboys vs Vikings - I really hope this game happens, it would probably be the non-superbowl highlight of the playoffs.
Packers vs Saints - This'll be close too

-AFC Championship-
Ravens vs Chargers - Our ill discipline will catch up to us eventually >:(

-NFC Championship-
Saints vs Cowboys - Peaking at the right time.

-Super Bowl-
Chargers vs Cowboys - This would also be an amazing match, going with the hottest team in the NFL to win it all.

lol, how prophetic

People have short memories. Last year Brian Dawkins parted the seas, herded the Cowboys onto an ark, and then crashed the waves back upon them. This year the Eagles, lacking their great prophet, were unable to handle the might of America's starry-helmeted dreams.

I'm pessimistic about FAVRE too. My concerns about Favre do not end @ cold weather.

Being realistic =/= being pessimistic.

m)n.1. A tendency to stress the negative or unfavorable or to take the gloomiest possible view

Even being put into a depressive state or made to expect the worst in one situation is not pessimistic; rather, you must pretty much abandon all hope (which would be unrealistic in this case, even with Favre involved), but more technically, it has to be a general trend, like tad pointed to with his depressiveness. You might be bleak, resigned, or guarded, but you are not pessimistic. (I spent way too much time writing that considering you will probably not care...)

Don't be a homer. The Ravens suck.

The Ravens' strength is their ability to run the ball effectively against any defense. This will translate into long drives and clock control, limiting the offenses of their opponents (which will likely include people like Rivers, Brady, and Manning). Flacco is at least decent enough to not throw stupid balls and give up costly interceptions, and if the Ravens can stop killing themselves with penalties they do have a very real shot at getting deep into the playoffs. I expect them to at least beat the Patriots and make it to the Divisional round, if nothing else. In any case the Ravens are far from "suck" status.

Also lol @ last night's game. I bet the writers on NFL.com had to bite their tongues (fingers) to keep from writing how they really felt, that the Bengals threw the game. They disguised it to make it sound as if the Jets defense did it all without any help, and that Rex Ryan was a genius. We'll see how this weekend's games go :D

The predictability of the Ravens offense is precisely why they suck, lol.

i find your comments pretty ignorant, the ravens have 2 pro bowl rbs in rice/mcclain, and mcgahee caught fire last sunday. flacco has shined in moments this season and has had bad moments as well. i believe he finished the season with a 21:12 td/int ratio, and around 3500 passing yards. mason is a good deep threat (basing an opinion off one dropped ball against pitt is ignorant, without him we might not even be in the playoffs), washington may be the most underrated receiver in the nfl, clayton can catch slants pretty effectively and has shown promise (although he has also shown bad moments). Our offensive line is anchored by veteran center birk, meanwhile oher and the others open up holes for our 3 rbs.

ontop of all that, we also have todd heap who has really had a good year compared to past ones, and is becoming a nice target for flacco.

meanwhile, on the defensive side, the front 7 is still banged up but they at least aren't blowing games terribly. We still have an excellent run defense, our major problem lies in pass rush. But we now have reed back, foxworth has come on strong the last few games, ellerby has shown glimpes of brilliance and is becoming more consistant, and carr can at least defend the passes sometimes, but pi is an issue.

to think the ravens "suck" is a dumb comment. Let's not forget they beat a chargers team in san diego, would have beaten the colts if not for a dumb pass and then dumb lateral, and the patriots had clayton caught the last pass.

the only team who has really "outplayed" us has been the bengals oddly enough, and we will probably not play them (only chance of us playing them is afc champ game).

edit: packers also "really outplayed" us, as far as a team matchup went. but every other game was close and probably should have been won by the ravens, but thats why you play the game, anything can happen sunday. but blowing us off as suck is a mistake

Except McClain is a fullback whose primary job is to block.

and mcgahee caught fire last sunday.

Yeah, against the Raiders.

mason is a good deep threat (basing an opinion off one dropped ball against pitt is ignorant, without him we might not even be in the playoffs),

Wow, an average at best receiver. I doubt the Patriots will have much problem covering him.

washington may be the most underrated receiver in the nfl,

Lol, who?

clayton can catch slants pretty effectively

LOLOL

ontop of all that, we also have todd heap who has really had a good year compared to past ones, and is becoming a nice target for flacco.

Too bad Heap is a blocking tight end.

Let's not forget they beat a chargers team in san diego,

Yeah, in week two.

would have beaten the colts if not for a dumb pass and then dumb lateral, and the patriots had clayton caught the last pass.

A Ravens fan making up excuses. How shocking.

the only team who has really "outplayed" us has been the bengals oddly enough, and we will probably not play them (only chance of us playing them is afc champ game)

I'm pretty sure seven teams outplayed you.

KD, don't worry about feeding the troll. Dude Freeman, all KD has done is acknowledged the strengths and weaknesses of our team and you respond with ignorant ass comments like "lololol". Also quoting only certain parts of an argument without addressing the entire whole is pretty stupid. Fuck, everyone is entitled to their opinions here but when they are presented as if from an eight year old child...well people like that aren't welcome on the boards (see: Pokey).

Quarterbacks the Ravens beat:

Matt Cassel
Philip Rivers
Brady Quinn/Derek Anderson
Kyle Orton
Dennix Dixon
Matt Stafford
Jay Cutler
Charlie Frye/JaMarcus Russel

Quarterbacks the Ravens lost:

Tom Brady
Carson Palmer
Brett Favre
Peyton Manning
Aaron Rodgers
Ben Roethlisberger

Notice a correlation?

Yes, our secondary is our biggest weakness; I'm not denying that. However, in the matches against Brady, Manning, Roethlisberger and Favre it was our offense (fucking Hauschka, good riddance) that cost us those matches by stuffing up big plays. These are plays that guys like Clayton and Mason normally make and the law of averages states that we should have won at least one of those games. But shit happens in football, aside from one of the Bengals matches and the Packers match (and you can argue the case for the Packers match to a degree), each of those matches was a 50/50 shot going into the fourth quarter. Ill discipline is the other major killer that cost us some of these matches >.<

My predictions for this weekend:

AFC:
Bengals vs Jets - I could very well be wrong here, but I don't think that this game will turn out anything like week 17. The Jets have an excellent defense, but they will need more than a one-dimensional offense to win this game. Cincinnati is opportunistic enough to capitalize on Sanchez's mistakes, and I don't think that they will be making too many of their own.
Patriots vs Ravens - This game should be very close. Both teams are very talented and their regular season matchup gave a good indication of how close these two teams are.

NFC:
Cardinals vs Packers - The Packers are extremely hot, and I think they will beat Arizona pretty handily. It is possible that the Cards come away with a win, but I don't see it happening against the Packer's outstanding defense and big play offense.
Cowboys vs Eagles - I doubt that this game will be a blowout like week 17, but I do think that the Cowboys have a fairly signifcant advantage playing at home with momentum on their side. The Cowboys have been playing very well down the stretch and I think that they will win at least one game in the playoffs, if not more.

dunno what freemans problem is but im bored and i have nothing better to do so...

Ray Rice: 254/1339/5.3/59/7
Willis McGahee: 109/544/5.0/77/12
LeRon McClain: 46/180/3.9/20/2

*in order of ATTEMPTS/YARDS/AVG/LONG/TD

we had over 2000 yards and 21 tds combined from our 3 tbs. two of them average 5 or more yards a carry, the other 3.9. not a bad running game and not one that just recently started coming on. ray rice by himself, also finished 2 this year behind chris johnson for "Yards from scrimmage"

Todd Heap:
53 receptions
593 yards
11.2 average
6 tds

not so shabby for a "primary blocker te"

Yeah, in week two.

every week counts. do you think its ok to lose your first 6 games as long as you finish strong with 8 wins at the end? i bet the titans don't, they didn't make the playoffs because they didn't win early season.

clayton/washington have combined for over 900 rec. yards, mason was the big star with over 1000 and 7 tds. and to call mason a "average at best receiver" is laughable and shows you have no knowledge of football.

FUN STATS TIME:

we have a +10 to ratio
we have 47 tds compared to other teams 27
we have 800 more total yards than our opponents
we have missed nearly 1/3 of our field goals

im not "making excuses", yes sometimes i don't like a call but i never like to blame officials for losses. blaming our kicking game or poor desicion making is just critiquing my team, not "making excuses".

Quarterbacks the Ravens beat:

Philip Rivers

Notice a correlation?

uh ... teams that have good qbs are good teams? what correlation? to make a good qb, you need to surround him with the right weapons. this isnt a single man sport, its a team effort. i dont see how this is relevant.

Ray Rice: 254/1339/5.3/59/7
Willis McGahee: 109/544/5.0/77/12
LeRon McClain: 46/180/3.9/20/2

1. Not knocking on Rice. He's legit.
2. 30.6% of McGahee's rush yards are from the Raiders game. I know a yard gained is a yard gained, but having one big game against a pitiful rush defense isn't anything to brag about.
3. Okay...?

Todd Heap:
53 receptions
593 yards
11.2 average
6 tds

Okay, he got a couple catches here and there. Big deal.

every week counts. do you think its ok to lose your first 6 games as long as you finish strong with 8 wins at the end? i bet the titans don't, they didn't make the playoffs because they didn't win early season.

The Chargers were a much different team back in week two. Do you honestly think the Ravens could beat the Chargers now?

we have a +10 to ratio
we have 47 tds compared to other teams 27
we have 800 more total yards than our opponents

Pretty easy to accomplish when you get the AFC West and play the Browns twice.

uh ... teams that have good qbs are good teams? what correlation?

It means you only beat bad teams and lose to good teams.

to make a good qb, you need to surround him with the right weapons.

Tom Brady had Troy Brown, Deion Branch, David Patten, and David Givens in his Super Bowl wins. Jay Cutler, although erratic at times, had 27 touchdowns with no name receivers. Good quarterbacks make bad teams better.

Freeman.... Mason has had over 1000 yards receiving in 7/8 past seasons... WITH NO QB!!! Hes also had a pretty underated year this season, so do your homework on that one first. As far as The Quarterbacks argument... Farve/Manning could of easily been losses. The kicker missed a chip shot against the Vikings, and if Ed Reed is smarter with the ball they beat the Colts as well...

Freeman I'm trying really hard to be civil with you but you need to do alot better job of arguing if you don't want the entire board to come down on you. Yes, we all know you're a Bengals fan. That doesn't mean you're obligated to flame and degrade everything about every other team in your division. Just because the Ravens and Steelers have a worse record (by one game) than the Bengals does not mean they "suck". The Ravens and Steelers aren't the best team in football by any means, but to label them the complete polar opposite is plain ignorance. It's not sacrilege to acknowledge one of your rival teams has talent. I give the Bengals and Ravens props where they are deserved, even being a Steelers fan. You'll receive a much more positive reaction around here if you are more intelligent and fair and less middle school trash talky.

On a completely unrelated note, would you happen to be user freemanftw on NFL.com? I got a shout out from that user today asking me to join a general NFL board and I thought it might be you.

actually mason is an average reciever. everything about is him average. he's clearly in the second 2nd or 3rd tier of wr's.

also isn't the colts game the one where they got the ball back with like 20 seconds before ed reed lateral it? so flacco had to go like 60-70 yards for a winning score with like no time outs left? i dont think you guys can count that as a "wouldve won if not for lateral" thing lol

and also as for who wins pats/ravens who cares? we all know pats fan will just say welker was out if ravens win, and will still talk even more shit like "we raped yall without welker" if pats win.

anyways

bengals over jets
eagles over cowboys
packers over cardinals

easy

also fuck colts for week 16. texans for playoffs :(

Freeman.... Mason has had over 1000 yards receiving in 7/8 past seasons... WITH NO QB!!!
Yeah, that Steve McNair guy totally sucked.

Hes also had a pretty underated year this season
Listen, I'm not saying Mason sucks. He's simply not going to torch the Patriots secondary.

The kicker missed a chip shot against the Vikings, and if Ed Reed is smarter with the ball they beat the Colts as well..
Doesn't matter. They lost. In fact, the Ravens have only beaten two teams with winning records this season.

The only reason they wouldnt deserve it is because of Special Teams and The Sanchise.
That and the fact the Colts handed them a win.

Also, I'm not a Bengals fan. I've simply hyped them up this season.

Also damn, I've heard of firing a coach or coordinator, but all of them??

I don't dislike the move, but there were some good guys let go. They said they'll let Fewell interview for some vacant positions, but I wonder if they're just trying to meet the Rooney rule with that. The only one I'm going to truly miss (if he isn't rehired) is Bobby April, arguably the best special teams coach in the NFL.
