I supported J.P. Losman from day 1. I would argue to the death (and still do to this day) how our management did not use him correctly and set him up to fail.
We yanked him in and out of the lineup and never respected that he was a project player with elite skills who needed patience and time to develop. As recently as the week after our first preseason game, I was pushing for J.P. to start Week 1. "We have a possible shot for the playoffs with Losman, but we definitely do not with Trent."
And here I am in Week 9, appalled by the calls for blaming Trent Edwards for what happened this season. Are we done for 2008? After this week, it could very well be yes.
The Dolphins game could have been an abberation, facing a tough divisional opponent on the road. Once I saw how sloppy we were at home, in front of a clearly pumped crowd at the Ralph, I could see the writing on the wall.
The Patriots are no juggernaut, but Belichick must be licking his chops watching our team make such boneheaded decisions. Here I am telling you that Trent Edwards is the SOLUTION, not the problem.
Trent has been nothing short of sensational this season. He is wise beyond his years for a 2nd year quarterback (in reality, with 17 career starts, he's barely even a 1st year quarterback...something the Losman haters don't realize when they call a guy with 30 starts a "4 year veteran"...uh uh).
He makes smart decisions with the football and can clearly make all the throws.
Our problem is very simple, yet very glaring. We can't run the ball and we can't rush the passer.
I refuse to believe Marshawn Lynch or Fred Jackson are the problems. Marshawn runs too hard, fights too much for yardage and looks too good out there. He's clearly trying his best and has proven he has the skillset. Freddie Jackson too.
I blame the problems with our two lines. What is most frightening is that these problems are not easily fixable.
Jason Peters is sure to get a huge deal...Langston Walker has a multi-million dollar contract and Brad Butler has a new deal. Aaron Schobel and Chris Kelsay are being paid Pro Bowl money. We are stuck with these guys.
All I can think of doing is firing our offensive line coach. I don't even know who he is, but I find it very hard to believe that the heaviest line in the National Football League can't push people off the line of scrimmage. It HAS to be the blocking schemes, doesn't it? We have to find out.
I hear everyone calling for us to blitz more and more, which is a joke. It'll only take one or two 60-80 yard touchdowns before that nonsense shuts up.
Whatever you do, don't blame Trent Edwards. Do you realize Trent has been so good this year that teams are actually not even blitzing him too much?
Joe Flacco must see people flying at him every which way to confuse him, but Trent has shown such knowledge of the game that teams are dropping several in coverage and daring our running game to beat them. Our running game...remember that?
Don't blame a young quarterback who took this team to a better start than any one of us could have ever dreamed.
We destroyed one promising young quarterback with our disloyalty and impatience...let's not do it again.
