I'm saying the pool of potent french coaches isn't as dim as you make it out to be. The choice isn't 'French' or 'Success' so stop trying to imply it is. It isn't Scotty Bowman that was just hired but a green Randy Cunneyworth. This isn't baseball, I didn't care that the Expos never had a French speaking coach, I knew there weren't any available.
But hockey? We're crazy about it here, everyone here thinks himself a coach at times, there are tons of French coaches in the Juniors, in other Pro Leagues, in the NHL or outside of it waiting to get back and there is certainly some quality within their ranks. Plenty to pick from.
Moreover, I do believe the Montreal team has a role to get French coaches in the NHL because frankly, it is pretty much only through this route that they manage to. Once they do get in, they are part of the wheel, they now have a reputation and more often than not will continue their careers in other teams all accross the league. They wouldn't have had this opportunity if one team, always the same, didn't give them a chance. The reason for that is that pretty much no other team scouts the Q for coaches, just like nobody scouts Finland or Sweden for coaches even though I believe many of them could do a fantastic job in the NHL. If their greatest players can make the transition from International rules European hockey to NHL hockey, so could their greatest coaches. But who's paying attention? It's an easy guess to say that an NHL team in Finland and Sweden would change that.
