The first day proves nothing really, Chelsea were very good against Portsmouth, playing some breath taking football and scoring some good goals. Portsmouth were indeed very poor, but taking nothing away from Chelsea, they made Portsmouth look bad. Chelsea will be a real force as usual, they have the squad to go all the way in every competition, but I'm unsure if it will happen for them just yet. They'll definately be in the latter stages of each competition, though.
Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United all struggled on the opening day, Arsenal and Manchester United with key players missing, while Liverpool's "excuse" will be that they were the only team of the "big four" to play an away game. Arsenal perhaps should've buried West Brom in the first half, but not finishing chances could've cost them in the end and could be seen as lucky to escape with all three points after a goal line clearance. Liverpool struggled against Sunderland, I think Sunderland performed well but a moment of magic from Torres was enough to steal the win. United didn't really perform too badly, but didn't create enogh clear cut chances to merit a win. Newcastle were definately fired up after being humiliated by Man Utd twice last season and it showed with a very good performance. I'm disappointed that Man Utd didn't keep up with the other big sides from the off, even if our absent players list is far worse than any other team at the moment.
I know this is all very premature, but I'm expecting Chelsea and Liverpool to go very, very close this year, along with Manchester United of course. I don't think Arsene has brought in the quality players he'll need (especially in midfield) if he wants to put up a fight for the title again. I'm predicting a 4th place finish (or worse) for Arsenal this time around. At this moment in time, I can't predict a winner from the other three, it's going to be very close and either Man Utd, Chelsea or Liverpool could end up snatching the title this time around.
However, I believe that if Manchester United don't beat Portsmouth on Monday, the ground could become too much to make up even in this early stage of the season. Chelsea, Liverpool and even Arsenal gaining possibly a 4-5 Point lead after two games could be too much come May, Chelsea and Liverpool will be stronger this time, United managed to win the League even though they dropped 7 Points in the first three games, but I don't think that'll be possible this time.
Man Utd have so many players out right now, so not beating Portsmouth means it'll be such a challenge to catch up again. United have to go to Anfield and Stamford Bridge in their next two games after the Portsmouth fixture, and if they don't have the players for those games, winning the league could become even more of an ask. Imagine not picking up a win for four games, with both Chelsea and Liverpool potentially speeding away to around a 6-10 Point lead already after only four games. I think it will be too much if United can't get players back or perform to a higher standard with the players left.

So many players out, many of them first string. Hopefully the majority will be back after the Super Cup and we can put up a fight against Liverpool and Chelsea.
----------------------- Van Der Sar --------------------
Brown ------ Ferdinand ----------- Vidić ------- O'Shea
-------------- Fletcher ----------- Scholes -------------
Rafael De Silva ----------------------------------- Evra
------------------ Tévez -------- Rooney ----------------
Subs: Kuszczak, Neville, Fábio, Evans, Gibson, Possebon & Campbell
This is the best I can come up with to face Portsmouth, that's basically every fit player left in the squad.
Hopefully we can sign Berbatov or Huntelaar before the Transfer Window closes on September 1st. (Then we'll have a striker to unleash on Liverpool and Chelsea).
