wow, its been 16 years

The US release was about a month before my 10th birthday. I got my Red version that year, picked my Squirtle, and never looked back.

And by that, I mean that I looked back almost every night for the next two weeks. I'd never played an RPG before, and I didn't know I could save the game. I'd beat Brock, have to turn off the game, and then start all over the next day until one day I realized that there was a "SAVE" option in the menu.

"Sparkly stars" (protect)

lol good times

So I'm guessing Bayleef and Meganium never got names because everyone figured out how terrible Chikorita was before it got to level 16? ;)

lol happy-spider

did anyone ever see any media from the pre-red/blue days, back when some mons had placeholder names?

Generation_I_prototype_English_names.jpg
for some reason the names are truncated to only seven characters. i had no recollection of these until stumbling upon the prototype red/blue page on bulbapedia a few months ago, at which point some fun memories were unearthed. i distinctly remember me and my friends talking about foxfire and digda

Pigeotto and Pidgeot were both named Pidgeot.

also the Omanyte/Omastar and Kabuto/Kabutops names are just horrible lol

Ess...Kargo

Att...Lantis

Pudding and Custard are adorable though

like i said, truncated to 7 letters for some reason. the ones that look like theyre cut off probably are

i remember being in the basement of my grandmother's house, probably 12 or 13, playing blue on my gameboy and trying to explain to her what this game was all about. the house has long since been sold, and grandma's now in a nursing where she thinks another old lady is her childhood best friend.

but less than a year ago, my buddy in gradschool would play rby pokemon cries on his phone and make me guess who they were. i was still pretty good.

world moves on; can't escape the game.

I was thinking about how they can combine pokemon with digimon so there are more mons... those were the days.

i guess they don't need to right now..

Charizard was like the Blue-Eyes White Dragon of Pokemon, but people would mistake the starter BEWD for the LOB version, and would trade their Charizard for it because YGO TCG was becoming increasingly popular at the time.

I recall swapping my starter Blue-Eyes for the Red-Eyes Black Dragon from the LOB set. Good times...

The only good card I ever pulled from Pokemon TCG was Lugia (with Elemental Blast!). This chav (who is now a lesbian, by the way) stole it off me, along with most of my holos...

By the time I got hold of her she had traded a lot of my stuff in exchange for money because she was in High School at the time and it was easier to flog off the fashionable trends for cash. She must've asked too much for Lugia because I did manage to find that card along with the remaining holos she didn't sell, but I think I recall one of my mates (and her younger brother) giving her a right bollocking and "grassed" (tattle-taled) her in to her mother; she might've quit smoking after this lol.

Neato, I had forgotten about this.

I remember hating Pokemon because it was popular until my family was in Florida for one Christmas and my brother got Pokemon Blue for his birthday (the 22nd). I got really jealous and upset until my parents started shaking the large bag that they had put Blue inside of, and said, "Wait... there's something else in here!" My little brother rushed over but my parents said it was for me instead... (haha, what assholes, considering this was my brother's birthday) so I got Red. I remember having the most difficult time choosing my starter and eventually asking my mother for help (I've always been indecisive), who said "Well, turtles are one of your favourite animals, right? It should be obvious" and since then Blastoise has been my favourite Pokemon. (Still have an incredible soft spot for Squirtle and Wartortle though)

In terms of catching stuff I pretty much copied Ash from the anime, I had my Squirtle, then caught Pidgey, Caterpie, Pikachu (and I think I caught Weedle too, but eventually stopped using it) and then eventually tried to get my hands on other starters. The last team member I caught was Dratini in the safari zone and I could just tell the little shit was gonna turn into something great.

That chick who tells you that if you lose to the Elite Four, you have to start again.

I took this seriously as well, except when my Blastoise/Charizard/Venusaur/Raichu/Pidgeot/Dragonite team got fucked up, I just turned off my Gameboy out of fear. I salute your 8 year-old self.

Oh yeah, and also this. That motherfucker.

I remember for a particularly long car trip, my mother purchased a clear purple Gameboy Color and Pokemon Yellow to entertain me. I didn't play yellow very much until I got Pokemon Silver, but I still really enjoyed it.

nidoking-color.png

...and he's probably a big reason why. Whenever I'd play through Yellow, I'd pick up a Nidoran Male and Evolve it right after it had become a Nidorino. BubbleBeam and Thunderbolt seemed like the best moves in the game on this guy.

Bubblebeam and Thunderbolt kind of were the best moves on Nidoking. At least until you got Earthquake and Blizzard.

I remember pulling a holo Pinsir and a Nidoqueen in my first two packs. I couldn't actually use them at the time because my brother and I split the Fire/Fighting starter deck.

I remember getting a new Gameboy Colour and Pokemon Yellow as a birthday present. Then my friend decided to trade me the Articuno he just caught, before I even made it through Viridian Forest. Then raging incredibly hard when the stupid thing kept disobeying me and falling asleep. I eventually make it to the Elite 4 with my Aritcuno now level 55 and my other 5 are in the early 30s. My first 5 all get OHKOed by Lorelei's Dewgong. Then incomes Articuno to miraculously take on the entire Elite 4 thanks to a large supply of Hyper Potions (I didn't have any Revives for some reason, or was stupid enough not to use them).

I still remember trying to pick up these games as a kid, but my parents though Pokemon was from the devil :(

I only ever got into the series two years ago when my parents stopped caring, but I still have undeniable respect for these games. When I bought it two years ago being a Pokenoob, I was able to win the Pewter Gym's Onix by spamming Tackle with Bulbasaur...

somehow.

I remember the first time I went through the greulling task of rasing my level 5 Magikarp into the beastly Gyarados. I was so proud of my accomplishment lol...

I had a Gameboy Pocket! Like many people, I borrowed my friend's Gameboy and copy of Pokemon before I actually had my own.

And for fun, here's my "pokemon timeline"...

Based on this, you'd think I loved pokemon more now than back in the day but actually I just have more disposable income now. Mowing lawns did not pay much back in the day!

i have ruby too, but i lent it to my brother ages ago, so that is safely with him at the moment

it really sucks because at one point i had red, blue, yellow, gold, silver… and i threw them all away. the gap between G/S release and R/S/E was so wide that I thought I was over pokemon… then as soon as R/S/E came out I was like "fuck, guess i STILL totally love mons!!"

carl

is that dragon warrior monsters or monster rancher

i HAVE to know
