Stop Using Him! (Dragonite Discussion)

I made a sweet team with Dragonite a few months back when Shaymin-S was in the OU Tier. I'm glad to see some one encouraging the use of Dragonite.

I suppose Heal Bell's the only thing stopping Latias from totally outclassing Dragonite as a Specially defensive Dragon, eh?

Uh, I guess there's also the ability to take on Gengar and Yanmega more easily, too...

I've had really, really good success with the whole 'Bulky Thunderwaving screening support Dragon' thing in Latias, I'd really love to see how the specially defensive Dragonite does. :)

Toxic stall Dragonite is outclassed by...Altaria.Yes,the only time Altaria outclasses any dragon who tries that set, thanks to the nice defenses and, mainly,NATURAL CURE.

What about a luck DDNite?I've used it,and it's quite nice.

Dragonite@ Leftovers

Thunder Wave
Dragon Dance
Dragon Claw
Roost

Focus the EVs on whatever you want Dragonite to do.Parahax can buy me a DD or two,and coupled with Roost,it let me survive any Ice Beam/Punch in the way.Beware with steels though

Along with the resistance to bug, lack of Pursuit bait, and more physical defense, DD+Outrage, but yeah...

Altaria doesn't ouclass Altaria, at all. Natural Cure doesn't mean shit when Dragonite has access to Light Screen(duh), which Altaria does not have...

Dragonite (almost all but bulky dd and healer) is outclassed. Salamence has the speed to pull of the mixed, the power to pull off the dd, etc. Plus no one in their right mind switches in Blissey (willingly) on a Dragonite.

Well some will, since other than Cresselia what else are you going to switch into those powerful Draco Meteors?

It is true, some Dragonite sets are outclassed by Salamence, however I feel the sets that Salamence is performing waste a slot when I could be using something like SD / Taunt Gliscor or SD Lucario, neither of which gets wrecked by sandstorm and stealth rock like Salamence does. IMO Salamence is a bit overrated as a sweeper, and Lucario is much easier to use, resisting stealth rock 4x, being immune to sandstorm, and not having that 4x ice weak, making it easier to set up on shit like Starmie if you are desperate. It also resists Bullet Punch + Ice Shard, so it is more difficult to revenge kill. Did I mention Extremespeed is da bomb?

I am planning on running the MixNite set with Thunder-wave on the last slot, crippling any faster switch-ins. Theoretically this should work pretty well, because anything slower should be slaughtered unless its super bulky.

Your missing the fact that Dragonite can run an Agility set: sorry if someone else mentioned it, but I don't feel like looking through 6 pages of thread...

Dragonite also has another relatively exclusive attack (to Dragons anyway) in the form of Ice Punch. What are the merits of using that on a set?

EDIT: I can see Ice Punch on a DD-Nite being useful in Ubers.

very limited imo, since Dragon hits everything neutral, has STAB behind it, and is resisted by the same type. Draco Meteor>Ice Beam and Outrage>Ice Punch.

Most Dragonites that I have seen don't run Ice Punch, or Agility for that matter. BUt I do see how that would be advantageous to run Agility.

I'm not really sure how advantageous it would be to have Agility. There is very little Dragonite cannot outrun after 1 DD, and he still loses to Ice Sharders.

Agility Dragonite is awesome, I've been using it a while back and it works nicely :).

Let's look at Ice Punch on Dragonite in Ubers for a second. Why is Ice a good attack in Ubers? Well, primarily because it hits all of the Dragons that are present in Ubers (Lati@s, Rayquaza, Garchomp, Giratina) as well as Groudon for Super Effective damage. However, every Dragon that is weak to Ice is also weak to Dragon (and also Kingdra and Palkia, who aren't weak to Ice). There are a few Dragons Double-Weak to Ice (Garchomp, Rayquaza, Salamence, Dragonite), but if you look, a 4x damage Ice Punch (75x4 = 300) is actually weaker than a 2x Damage STAB Outrage (120*1.5*2 = 360). A Neutral Ice Punch is 75 while a Neutral outrage is 180. Add this to the fact that the only type that resists Dragon (Steel) also resists Ice, and there will never be a case where Ice Punch can do more than Outrage. EDIT: Actually, the only case would be if a Pokemon was double-weak to Ice but not Dragon-type (and thus takes Dragon moves Neutrally). However, the only Pokemon that fall in this category are Torterra, Jumpluff, Shaymin-S, Gliscor, and Tropius, none of which are commonly seen anywhere (besides Gliscor in OU).

to the OP: how do those bulky DD sets and the support sets do against physical ice? Your bulky sets focus on Spd, i'm wondering if they can take a Mamo LO Ice shard or a Weavile CB Ice shard. Can the Mixnite set take a weavile ice punch? Just curious because these seem like interesting sets, want to know their weaknesses as well before trying them out.

good job btw, i love dragonite and im glad there are somebody creating these great sets.

It's pretty easy to run damage calculations locoghoul.

Can the Mixnite set take a weavile ice punch?

Put it this way.

Jolly Expert Belt Weavile vs 252 HP / 252 Def Impish Dragonite = 108% - 127%

So can MixNite (0 HP / 0 Def) survive it?

Hell no. ^_^

Your bulky sets focus on Spd, i'm wondering if they can take a Mamo LO Ice shard or a Weavile CB Ice shard.

Adamant LO Mamo Ice Shard vs 252/0 Dragonite = 102% - 121%
Jolly CB Weavile Ice Shard vs 252/0 Dragonite = 100% - 119%

I've been giving this a try, and it does work fairly well.

Actually, theres a good amount, such as Alakazam, Aero, Jolteon, and Choice Scarfers. It was extremely effective back when Deoxys-e was on every team as the ultimate revenge killer, back in the era of hyper fast choice scarfers and offensive teams. But it still can boast about never being outspeed at least, and can put an end to these Jolly Scarfed Flygon.

Yes, I find a lot of players switch in Scarfed Heatran, hoping to absorb a Fire or Dragon move, and revenging Dragonite with a swift Dragon Pulse. T-wave can really hurt Heatran switch-ins, allowing you to easier predict and just SuperPower away.

Only problem is you give up recovery, meaning residual damage stacks up more quickly. Other than that Thunder Wave seems amazing.

I don't post here much. But I have to say this thread is very impressive and you have put a lot of thought into this, RL.

Dragonite is my second favorite Pkmn. (Evire being the first of course, lol.)

But I have a question for you: Which variation of Dragonite is your favorite?

Currently I'm having trouble deciding between MixNite and the Choice Band version.

I am in dire need of a wall-breaker.

I really do like Mixite and I especially like Thunderbolt on it. If you Superpower Gyarados on the switch, they usually DD on your -2 Atk, -1 Def Dragonite. That is when you nail it with Thunderbolt, which not a lot of Dragonites carry

Um, you're using a Heal Bell / ThunderWave / Roost / Dragon Claw / Dragon Dance / Outrage Dragonite?

>.<;

I was referring to the support set, not the bulky sweeper; and in sweeping terms, Bulky Latias' Calm Mind is hardly a pushover.
