Pokémon World Championships 2009 Discussion Thread

Well it's 5 hours until it opens and already we have had some memorable things happen!

Over 700 players in the TCG Last Chance Qualifiers.

Our very own Smogoners have arrived ready to take on those Japanese!

Lot's of goodies!

Staff, if I am not allowed to link youtubes then just remove these:

Pokémon World Championships 2009 - Day One
Pokémon World Championships 2009 - Day One [Last Chance Qualifiers]
PokePress: Site Tour
PokePress: Competitor goodies
Pokémon World Championships 2009 - Day Two [Countdown Over]
Pokémon World Championships 2009 - Day Two [VGC Coverage]

I'll keep this first post updated with all youtube links (if allowed them).

--------------------------------------

So what are your thoughts smogoners? Who are our best chances to go far? I am sure we all have a lot of respect for the Japanese and european players but whom do you think have what it takes to take on the Japanese at their own game? Can OmegaDonut be the Omega? Can our American Smogoners defeat the japanese? Hell, can the european smogoners such as UltimateUnknown and the MagnificentShoeman do well?

Discuss!

I think Alakapimp, Sixonesix, or Imperfectluck will win. I know the first two's team and they are both good, and I helped IPL with a pokemon. Huy can win too cause he is the best wifier.

By the way I think the youtube links are fine.

The world championships include the VGC and the TCG. But most discussion will be on VGC, the LCQ was only stated due to it being there in the first place.

Ap - I have just scouted 20 pages of that old topic and couldn't find the list. I swear we had a list somewhere? People?

I've played Shoe's team, Its really irritating so will see how he fairs. Unsure on others but I am hoping for the UK to do us good. If we make it through the first round they might consider regionals for us. :O

I have high hopes for Shoe, too. Excellent team, and he really knows what he's doing. Plus is really small, so uh... might be underestimated? :P

But I guess I would say that, seeing as I helped him a lot with the team. And may the best man (or woman, seeing as there's at least slimceagirl) win. Now to find my phone so I can get easy updates.

Sort of. It got pretty drastically improved, and has a different lead in the Worlds version. Plus out of the 6 members, the 2 reserves can slot in and put a whole new spin on the team if he has to fight the same guy twice.

Oh that's good! Well let's see if your work paid off. I might need to get lessons off of you if it does haha!

I haven't heard much on ultimateunknown, he has been pretty much a shadow in my cases. He's not been really giving anything away on his team for Worlds but he is a pretty innovative character (despite he used a lead team in london that was probably used more then most..). I hope he does well too.

No offence guys, but I personally want to see Vash do well, I noticed a lot of aggravation heated up over points issues which later concluded pointless but apart from that little tease he's been pretty active over at SkarmBliss so I am hoping maybe he could succeed a bit, nice guy and all.

Thanks fusion for the heads up on the links. If they can that would be pretty darn awesome.

What are the thoughts on the welcome gifts? I'm sure some of us might be a little jealous? x(

Yea swiss rounds today are best 2 out of 3, so if he has the ability to change his team with his 2 last pokemon, that would be an advantage. I know Imprison teams and TR teams have similar members and can be subbed out easily. I just hope Huy isn't being gay using trick again. If you want to pm me shoe's team I would be interested.

About the welcome gifts, IPL sold his skymin bag for $130 or something like that.

Didn't slimceagirl drop out of worlds? I'm pretty sure she is no longer competing.

slimceagirl's still in, or so says her Facebook. Orrin Cowley dropped out, though.

Also, since this is basically the same topic as the other thread - can we get this moved back into the other thread, but only after the tournament is over?

This is only for the world championships itself for information on the event. The others were more based on every other event and this topic is specialised on this event. When it is over this may be locked.

Besides, being the pinnacle of the year event, I thought it would be credible in its own topic as well since finding information which would be posted on the other thread would just be too much for one page already. Least here you get all the information of what is going on and journals of the days.

That's just my opinion though.

Why the hell did IPL sell his stuff anyway? Well meh I guess I can see my money wise but in a way it's a brilliant souvenir.

As for predictions, I honestly have no idea. I think all of the smogoners in attendance are very talented, but I also think that the Japanese competitors are very skilled as well. My personal favorites are batpig, OmegaDonut, and imperfectluck, but those are heavily biased. Hopefully we will be getting some updates as the tournament progresses.

Added a new video of Day Two with the Countdown over.

Also, HG/SS got news of coming out in both US and A plus Europe in Spring 2010!

Anyways, battle should happen very soon if not started now.

Good idea. I'll make sure this happens. I like the idea of having this separate for the time being just because it beats having to dig through pages upon pages of the VGC thread for current results.

To add to the discussion, my dark horse pick is Batpig. I think a lot of people are going to overlook him which would be foolish on their part!

I've got my money on Sixonesix to win, or like Carl said maybe Batpig. I've played them both on Wifi and they both seem very experienced players!
I can't wait to see some of the battles when they're on Youtube!

Aaargh. I've lost my phone.

Does anyone have any info on what's going on at this moment? As in, have there been or will there be any battles today?

And yeah I wholly agree about Batpig. Everyone's sort of forgetting him, and his team (at least the old one) was really impressive. I took a lot of inspiration from his team when making Shoe's team, sort of. Though didn't zerowing design Batpig's team? Or something like?

Though I'd say I have Shoe down for top 4. I think he's got one of the DSis.

batpig and i are 2-0
ipl, honchkrow, mattj, fatum are 1-1
drug duck, omegadonut, mingot's daughter are 0-2 i think
more results later
we are getting slaughtered by the japanese
