I guess not (i.e. it will be like this year -_-), the VGC is still in its early stages... But I sincerely hope they change it somehow, didn't they have on-line prequalification for U.S. people interested in participating?

Oh dear god I hope they don't do that for any country, that's totally unfair.

How is it unfair? They did it two years ago and the quiz was extremely simple. It weeded out the people with no knowledge of the gameplay mechanics.

Can anyone provide me a link to the quiz - or at least some of the questions?

IIRC correctly one of the questions was:

Which of these statuses go away of you switch?
A) Sleep
B) Poison
C) Confusion
D) Paralysis

Or something about Natural Cure. But they were all simple like that.

Sorry, I meant the quiz they had a couple of years ago.

NEWS: They will be giving out Shiny Eevee, like Milo last year. - Serebii

They did that for 2008; the time you had on your quiz was related to your age group. I took it for fun and I got 16/20 on it, with 15 being the qualification cutoff.

Honestly, there was nothing MAJORLY wrong with the random selection they did last year - the biggest problem was the # of people who showed up. If they allowed more people (or did multiple brackets), there wouldn't be a problem.

Oh god, it's going to be an idiot-fest again this year. I hope they learned from their mistake of "you need to register in the tournament to get the Shiny Milotic"

They weren't prepared in Philly.

Plus, that was the only site in the Northeast.

Hopefully, this year, they have one somewhere like Boston, and one in Philly.

I think the juniors quiz was different, cause the quiz I took was basically silhouettes that you had to identify, took it like 5 times cause I could never get the email part right, eventually my mother emailed the people and got me in

Because it was first come first serve, not all of us hang around on the internet constantly waiting for the VGC quiz to come online. Besides that the quiz should be competitive releated, not just "What Pokemon evolves from this?" or something. I heard there were alot of noobish people at the VGC that wasted space for the truely competitive.

No, it wasn't first come first serve. Don't state things that you have no understanding of as if they are fact. The quiz in 2008 was merely to weed out unknowledgable players (who could easily use an internet resource to answer the questions regardless). Everyone who finished the quiz with an acceptable score (15 or more) was put into a random pool and 128 people were selected from that pool. The best thing about 2008 was that they allowed for alternates to show up at the tournament and get in provided that someone who did get picked did not show up to the tournament. This was necessary, as the vast majority of the selected players did not show up to the tournament. The best option for player selection is, in my opinion, to allow everyone into the tournament, because then there is no ridiculous random selection and it is not first come first serve either. Swiss rounds or a bracket with byes can be used to accomodate any number of players.

I concur :/ seriously in 2008, like 3/4s of the people were alternatives in New York and the California side had to halve their bracket due to lack of people, they probably selected a bunch of people who signed up and knew they weren't going to show up, that was seriously terrible for the people who came down hoping for an alt slot that wasn't guaranteed

You're right, the feeling of those who came down hoping for a spot that wasn't guaranteed was almost like.... everyone in 2009? The online selection process was certainly better than 2009's terrible on-site random selection, but it was still very poor and could easily be improved.

They actually announced the rules officially on the JP pokemon website... I took a quick glance and there were only two things I noticed that weren't on the originally posted list (not sure if they're obvious, too much of a noob)

using GS cup rules (not sure about the cup name...)

nature power always results in tri attack
secret power has a one third chance of paralysis
using camouflage means your pokemon becomes normal type

Hope that's actually useful info :)

I don't know why everybody complained about the "random selection process" they used last year. I quite liked it. All you had to do was RNG the computer they used for "randomly" selecting who got in and not.

All you had to do was take your monster frame (the number they gave you) then divide by the number of roamers (the total amount of people who signed up) then multiply by Murphy's Law to find your seed. Then you just had to Restart their computer and mash the CTRL button on that computer they used while they weren't looking until the blue screen of death appeared and exactly 50% of the time, your number would be picked. That's what I did and it worked for me. :)

Hope they use the same RNG method next year too!

Oh, and slipping the chubby guy wearing black and white a 50 while nobody was looking probably helped too.

Yay! Bright colors and a bunch of chicken scratch I can't read!!! :D

Oh, look! Is that a Pikachu???!! =O

At least they have those 2 big pictures of banned, and "allowed". I think I understood that...

Use google translator. I did and I half understood what it said.

Yeah, just from experience at Worlds I would say that you should definitely plan on facing triple paralysis, perfectly timed critical hits, or your 95% accurate Ice Fang missing 3 times in a row. XD

>_> lol I hated it when that happened.

Anyways, about the entrance method; from what I saw before it was a form of pre-registration, but they may have made it like Showdown 2008 where it was a quiz online beforehand, and then the no-show spots were given away via a lottery. I'll try and find out for sure.

the thing about weeding out the people who lacked knowledge, you realize that it failed miserably considering even if you failed the test, you were easily taken in as an alt, so yeah... don't know what happened there
the reason why we didn't like the random selection was that some of the people in the mix weren't even going to go, but just signed up to mess with everyone, and they actually got picked... you know it would be nice if they did a check up of the people who are like way out of range of the place they signed up for... cause for all we know someone from another country could have probably signed up...
and lol Pokemonbattlebrain, yeah we need to watch out for those things, I got killed in round two cause a Garchomp used Dig on me and my Metagross Exploded all over the walls, I really should have seen it coming cause I dubbed the kid as an inexperienced battler...

Also something I'm sort of worried about:

I really hope Europe's VGCs come a decent amount of time after HG/SS's release. This year, we did our VGCs with D/P carts because Platinum came out literally 8 days before the first European round (I think London was first anyway; Paris was definitely last) and so nobody would've had time to prepare without another game and DS and/or a helpful friend.

This means that if the European rounds play out the same, and we have to play on Platinum, we'll still have the lvl50 level cap. This is really bad news to Mewtwo and Rayquaza users in particular, Mewtwo for obvious reasons and Rayquaza because Extremespeed won't be useable and that's basically his signature move.

So, any thoughts? TCPI should be aware of this issue but it could have quite serious implications for Europe. They'll probably schedule the tournaments later on purpose this time, but still. Scheduling later is also good for any exam students: this year the VGC was right in the middle of my GCSEs, and only 2 days before my maths exam (I still got an A in it so the VGC didn't make me do badly lol). I have no idea when my AS exams are, but I think it's also around may time, so yeah. Anyway I'd be absolutely heartbroken if next year's VGC is on the same day as an exam or something. I'm already all fired up to win it, eheheh.

Also I don't really agree with 'weeding people out'. Though I was in the UK and naturally did get into the tournament (only 4 people didn't), I preferred it that I pretty much walked it into the quarter finals. It also meant that all the experienced and well-prepared battlers were likely to get into the later rounds. I actually knew 3/4 of the semifinalists (and now know all of them), so yeah really. Though I knew McSpam off another site and was extremely surprised when I saw one of his battles on the big screen. Should've said hello lol. I do understand how bad it was in the US though. They should just upscale the tournament and let as many people as possible play. Can't be that hard really. As in, depending on how many people sign up, do the random number generator as many times as necessary (eg if you have 550 people turn up, do the number generator 4 times then get 512 competitors) and do the lower rounds as many times as necessary. Sure it'd take longer... and there may be issues with paying the staff, but it's worth consideration.

First, I wasnt try to state what I said as fact, I'm only going by what I read about the last VGC.

Everyone who finished the quiz with an acceptable score (15 or more) was put into a random pool and 128 people were selected from that pool.
Sounds pretty much first come first serve to me. I dont know about the alternatives system but it sounds pretty fail to me because it doesnt guarentee you to get it.
