The First Internet War

I'm surprised that there isn't a topic about this already, so here goes.

If you don't know already, today the Department of Justice filed an indictment against file-sharing site Megaupload (this includes Megavideo) for "facilitating millions of illegal downloads of films, music and other content."

Megaupload services, on average, over 50 million visitors a day. Yet what the DOJ clearly underestimated was the strength and speed of the whiplash that would result.

Within hours, internet group Anonymous organized over 5,000 people in a DDoS attack on the Department of Justice website. One user says, "I think Anonymous won the hearts of millions today."

Events are already popping up like wildfire - Black March in particular is a Tumblr post with over 17,000 notes and counting at the time of this post, asking internet users to boycott internet sources of revenue:

"Do not buy a single record. Do not download a single song, legally or illegally. Do not go to see a single film in cinemas, or download a copy, Do not buy a DVD in the stores. Do not buy a videogame. Do not buy a single book or magazine."

That isn't going to happen.

but... wait.. what...?

How will boycotting sites like Amazon help sites like Megaupload? Why target a legitimate site that does its business legally?

I'll be buying things from companies that I still respect, meaning, carrying on with life as usual. Agreed with what mattj said.

And they took my motherfucking Megaupload from me. This is complete bullshit.

lol am i the only person who thinks that the amount anon cares and how far theyre willing to go in order to demonstrate that care is actually a little frightening?

im all for fighting against internet censorship and all that, but i would never have the balls to do half the shit anon does on a weekly basis

idk i guess what im saying is good for anon for caring, but they really never manage to make an impact and it this point theyre kinda just wasting their time imo

I feel that Anonymous' intervention in what's going on is going to make a huge difference in what's happening now.

Most of this is happening because of the Internet Blackout.

It was a bad time to close Megaupload, less than 24 hours after the Internet Blackout.
Especially since it was a very draconian approach, to close the entire site. And don't forget that Anonymous is trying to attack the MPAA RIAA, FBI, and US Dept. of Justice at once. That's going to be big, I assume. :/

Normally I wouldn't bother paying attention (eh another hacker attack, whatever is my usual thought), but after hearing they're going after Megaupload (which I love), I hope they hack them to hell and bring them down for as long as they can.

I understand that many people use and love megaupload, but if they are doing what they're accused of doing... shouldn't something be done about it? trying to spark a discussion beyond raaaaaawr they took down my favorite site raaaaawr

This is just a ploy from Anonymous to have the US government destroy their servers with a devastating cyber attack, then have the CIA rebuild them at the expense of American taxpayers.

What do you mean The Mouse that Roared isn't analogous to the internet?

Please stop calling Anon "hackers" or this a "hacker attack", DDoS is preschool shit when it comes to the internet. I'm not a hacker, and I realize that this is insulting to real hackers.

I'm with Snorlaxe. I'm over Anon, these people need to find meaning in their lives while there's still time.

I would say most of them are script kiddies. However, there are a very select few among them who are actually hackers and have access to botnets.

And, while I think Anon likes to overreact like hell, I'm with them this time. The day after the Internet protests a draconian bill, the feds send a huge "Fuck you" back to it. Ironically, Megaupload is one of the sites that actually complies with DMCA laws, and regularly takes down things that are pirated, when requested. Other sites usually ignore requests.

Exactly. Sure, their DDoS attacks are sorta fail, but the fact is that it's coming out of their paychecks to fix it. And if the links keep going like they are, it wont stop for a few weeks.

Oh, and if it's not out of THEIR paychecks to fix it, Anon will probably have something to say about that, too.

I just hope they don't take down mediafire :(

Hey guys stop dissing anonymous - at least they have the balls to actually take initiative and do SOMETHING in order to resist against America's increasingly draconian policies. I just hope they get more aggressive.

That isn't going to happen.

it wasn't worded too clearly, but the idea is to boycott those products outright, not specifically those products from online sources.

I understand that many people use and love megaupload, but if they are doing what they're accused of doing... shouldn't something be done about it? trying to spark a discussion beyond raaaaaawr they took down my favorite site raaaaawr

no. current copyright law in the usa is absolutely outrageous and deserves to be murdered.

i'm sorry deck knight, i know you don't really 'get' technology but i just don't have a fucking clue what you mean. are you suggesting that the cia is going to be tricked into blowing up its own machines...?

maybe we read differently, but it sounded to me like snorlaxe was impressed.

anyway, the article clearly said that the ddos was conducted largely using loic, which is essentially a tool that allows your computer to be controlled by whoever owns the botnet. no technical or 'hacking' skill required.

keep in mind that most people identifying with anonymous are active political protesters. many of these people are either tax resistors or simply non-americans.

(yes, it is fair for non-americans to get involved. this is legislation that affects the world.)

this is an updated, interactive list of house and congress members with their official position on sopa.

seems like the government is forgetting the true purpose of these anti-piracy acts: to protect and respect original works. megaupload just "shares" these files and not pirate them. the fact that they consider deletions upon request shows their respect for orignal works.

if these types of sites are shut down, how about those "non-greedy" artists who are willing to share their works and want to show to the world thru big sites like megaupload?

apparently 4 people were arrested in new zealand for going to megaupload, which sort of terrifies me.
No. The people arrested were involved in the business itself. No one has been arrested for using megaupload.

it wasn't worded too clearly, but the idea is to boycott those products outright, not specifically those products from online sources.
Oh no no, I understood that, but, how is witholding business from legitimate, legal businesses going to help megaupload and other sites that support illegal file sharing?
no. current copyright law in the usa is absolutely outrageous and deserves to be murdered.
As a musician I know just a little bit about copyright law. What do you find so outrageous?

They can very easily host whatever they want on their own sites.

So now we have to use the other 250 websites exactly like MegaUpload in its place? Doesn't seem very significant of a change to me. Either way I download from YouTube and I highly doubt that YouTube would get shut down for "facilitating illegal downloads"

(In the clear)

Calling this an "Internet War" is an overstatement.

A site with a large user base that was infamous for trafficking illegal downloads and porn got shut down and the guys that browse /b/ got upset. It sounds a lot like what happened to Napster except for the last part. I can live without Megaupload and I certainly won't be participating in any kind of entertainment boycott.

At it's peak, MegaUpload had a reach of 4% of more or less the entire internet. One of the major points to take note of here is that if the DoJ can take down Megaupload without any kind of legislation like SOPA/PIPA, imagine what would happen if they had those bills behind them.

I can't tell if they were just being sarcastic, but for some weird reason, that kinda makes sense as to why they would do that. 0_0

Scary.

i feel somehow lucky to live here in third world where piracy is uncontrollable.

EDIT: please delete this post. that was my bro...

They didn't take down megaupload just for the fuck of it. They were doing pretty shady shit as you can see here http://pastebin.com/hNJnWKBi
